Guardian of the Northern Light- Part 1

Boreas the God of the North Wind whipped the gale across the Artic snow causing it to drift above the ice flow. His violent temper raged onward through cold landscape, causing the entire sea to freeze in an endless plain of ice. The Lords of Night rode upon their shadowed steeds casting the world into darkness, engulfing the sun for an entire month.

Standing in the darkness, a snow leopard stood in silence, the wind whipped through his snow white fur that was specked with black blotches. His eyes scanned the blackness of the eternal ice, looking back and forward. Both of his paws were wrapped around the base of his ivory spear which dug into the ground.

He sniffed the air, trying to catch a particular scent that he has been longing to smell for a month now. The leopard was scrawny, and his bones stuck out from his fur from near starvation. If he didn't find any food soon, he would probably starve to death.

His ears perk up as he heard something within the dark. He rose his head his emerald eyes gazing all around him, his paws clutching the spear tightly. He hears a low growling sound, his spear is jerked out from underneath the snow as he clutched it, the sharp end pointed in front of him.

His gaze was stern as he heard the sound of crunching snow. His breath was calm, as was his heart. When in a normal situation like this, his heart usually would have been pounding like thunder.

A few moments of silence follows, the sound he had heard faded into the whaling of the gale. Silence....silence...BAM! A huge beast suddenly flings itself upon him, causing him to lose balance, his body falls to the ground as the beast pins him, baring two large saber fangs to his throat.

The leopard narrows his eyes and then quickly pushes the beast off him with a strong punch to the beast's chest. He regains his position tightening his grip upon the spear.

The Snow leopards heart was now in fact beating like raging thunder as him and the saber began to circle each other. The saber rises a paw and took a swipe for the leopard's legs which were wrapped in Mammoth hide, however the leopard was quick with agility and dodges the attack.

The saber growls and let out a hiss as it attempted once again, the leopard takes this to his advantage and tabs the tip of his spear towards the exposed chest of the saber, but the saber reacted and by grabbing ahold of his spear with his teeth quickly yanking it out of the leopards paws tossing it far from his reach.

The beast rises up to his hind legs almost like a bear before taking another leap, his body pushes the leopard down growling loudly his claws exposed as they dug into the leopards arms as he pinned him to the snow.

With no further options the leopard growls louder than the saber grabbing hold of its neck hunger rushing into his eyes as the saber snapped at him trying to get ahold of him, with a quick twitch of his paws a loud SNAP could be heard, and the saber released his grip upon the leopard and his body went limp, falling on top of him.

The leopard panted heavily, as a bead of blood dripped down from the beast's mouth. The thick fur of the beast was matted with snow that stung at the leopards face like the biting of Ice Wraiths. With what energy he had left inside him he removes the beast of f his chest, wincing in pain as the claws removed themselves from his arms which oozed with his own blood.

Panting the leopard rose to his feet and looked at his prize, he knew that now the only matter he faced was getting it back to his camp and cooking the meat and removing the pelt to use for the long harsh winter.

The leopard regained his strength when he hoisted himself up, the snow blasted against his pelt as the wind continued to moan. He looked around wondering where the brute had flung his spear. When he sees a bit of ivory sticking out from the snow, he quickly bends down and reaches for it, he pulls it out from underneath the snow that had piled upon it and whipped it clean with his parka.

He then took a deep breath and walked back towards the dead saber and bent down upon one knee. He began to mutter words of a sacred rite.

"By the powers of the ancient Gods and Goddesses, bless this food with your magic and wisdom, and may the spirit of the saber find sanctuary within the Lights, as he walks along side of the Guardian of the Northern Light, learning of the ancient ways of his people, so that one day he may return to this world in another form," He whispered softly.

With the rite being performed of blessing his food the Snow Leopard looked up to the skies, the snow had suddenly come to a halt as did the wind, the clouds were breaking apart revealing a sky full of stars that shimmered like millions of diamonds.

Suddenly a strange anomaly began to spread across the arctic sky, a ribbon of green light weaved itself over the stars as it began to dance across the drifting clouds. The moon appeared, bathing the snow in a silver light, the small crystalized particules that rested within the snow took light and shimmered just like the stars above.

The leopards gaze then returns to the lifeless body of the saber as then he slowly backed away from his pray, the Northern Light above danced and swirled above him, and then something strange began to happen. The lights themselves began to come downward towards the earth, like a waterfall flowing from above.

The leopards eyes stared at this event in pure amazement, He has heard of this from many stories that his Grandmother had told to him when he was a cub, that when a hunter made his kill, the spirit of that animal would be given to the Guardian of the Northern Light.

The light fell downward, colliding onto the snow covered ground like water it splashed upon the ground painting the snow now a crimson red as the lights shifted colors. The leopard gazed upwards and saw mores strands of colors weaving with the green, first it was the red, then it was the orange, and then blue and amber.

The lights surrounded the body of the saber, as then its spirit a small sphere of ethereal light lifted out of its body, and then began to lift into the air. The leopards eyes gazed at what was happening, and he swore he saw a hand with claws gripping at the soul carrying it towards the skies.

The leopard looked down at his feet and yelped, he now noticed that the lights had surrounded his knees, he was suppressed that he felt nothing when they touched his fur. The lights began to evaporate, as quickly as they came they then began to return to the sky, as if time was moving backwards the lights lifted themselves up from the ground and then returned to the skies as if nothing had ever happened, leaving the soulless saber to feed his gnawing hunger.
