Chapter 1: Zhane's Daily Life

Zhane Martins....

Looks like a simple blue-eyed white rabbit of Reno, Nevada

Looks like any 9th Grader that likes to draw and hang out with her friend Tara

The problem...

is not "like the others"

"For homework, I want a resume with your own words about Dickinson's works" says the homeroom sparrow teacher Ms. Meier, everything was quiet but then a gray-furred husky throws a paper to the rabbit and a giggle was heard on the classroom.

"Silence" sayed Mr. Meier and then saw the paperball on the floor near Zhane's desk

"Zhane, can you pick up the paper please"

"Don't worry, it's nothing" and then reluctantly pick up the paper, give it to the teacher and unravel it to discover the message:

Go away, you fag!

"OK, who wrote this?" but nobody responded "I said, who wrote this? One thing I can't tolerate on my classroom is bullying, this is the last time that happens, I'm clear"

"Yes, Mr. Meier" say the classroom

"OK, so...as I was saying..."

But the bell ringed, and all dismissed the class

"Don't forget the resume for tomorrow, OK?"

All Zhane can do was sigh and pick up his stuff, but Mr. Meier talk to him

"Zhane, they're picking on you?"

Zhane was again said nothing

"Look, I know this is not the first time you were target on this things...and maybe not the last one"

"It's not easy to tell these things"

"I know, but remember; if you need someone to talk I'm here for you...OK?"

Zhane nodded and decided to leave the classroom.

Break time was on the way and Zhane was drawing on his sketch pad. He liked drawing since he was 5 years old and started improved ever since. He was drawing what it looked like a shark superhero, when suddenly...

"Lookie-look how muscular is your hero" the husky said snatching the sketch pad and his lackeys: an dark brown lynx and a ram laughing of it

"Give it back Rick, it's not finished yet" said Zhane trying to obtain his notebook

"Oh please" said Rick taunting "That drawing is pathetic like you, ya fag"

"Just give it back to me" but then a female red panda arrived. She was Tara: Zhane's childhood friend since he was 6, she is more tomboyish and secure of herself than the rabbit, she was not afraid to being there everytime when Zhane, her little twin sisters or anyone else.

"Knock it off Rick, he's not in the mood" shouts to the bullies

"These is between the queer and me, it's none of your buisness...teacher's pet"

"The professors like me because unlike you, I'm a respectful student...and not a jackass that throws paperballs on class"

Rick was about to punch her but he was hesitating

"Are you going to punch a girl? And you call yourself a man...come on, bring it, you and your slaves...I'm still telling the teachers or the principal...i'm not afraid of you"

"Fine" and then he proceeded to cut the drawing and threw the notepad and then giving a punch to his arm "What a way to kill the mood" and the trio just walked away. Tara took the notepad and the broken drawing.

"I'm sorry for your drawing...it's was neat, I can repair it with some tape" says Tara worried about her friend

"Nah, it's OK, I can make it again; thanks for helping me" says Zhane a little bit upset and weakly smiled

"What are friends for...come on, let's go to a quieter place" and Tara took his paw and took it to a better place, but later he saw another rabbit: with silver fur and taller than say, the red panda just look amazed and whispered: Son of a...

After classes, Zhane and Tara were waiting on the outside of the building, Tara was asking Zhane of inviting the rabbit to her twin sisters' birthday next month and about being more open with his teachers. Unfortunately, Zhane found alone on the men's room Rick and his friend and give him a purple eye and a bruise on his cheek.

"I'm just saying if you talk more to the faculy, you'll be better"

"Yeah but...if I spill the beans, Rick and his guys would make it worse"

"No, if you spill the beans, they'll notice and they going to take matters on this problem"

"It's not just them, it's more of...." and later the white rabbit leaned his head down with sad eyes, Tara just grabbed her paws and told him

"Look...there is nothing wrong of being gay. It's normal that you has problems to admit it and speak it with your parents, and you know that I'll understand...Straight or not, you're still that little crying rabbit on his 1st day of school"

Zhane just smiled and told her "Thank you Tara", but when the 16-year old silver rabbit get near, her smile turn into a frown

"What?" questioned Zhane

"It's your brother" mumbled the red panda and later greet him with a not-so-happy look to him "Hey Jeff"

"What...you're greeting me like that...I don't get it. Why you always upset with me?"

Tara just turned around and looked him in the eye

"Why? I'll tell you why: you watched your own blood brother getting harrassed by Rick and his lackeys and do nothing about it. THAT is why"

"Oh come on, I told you I'm acting the right way"

"No, you're acting the Jerk way"

"Come on guys" says Zhane trying to calm down the two "There's no need to argue again"

"You're just jealous because I make a better job to help your brother...the one you also are supposed to care for, but instead you act like your dad"

"So what? Since Middle School you always are so harsh to me, what I'm a supposed to do"

"Simple: Be...a...elder...brother"

But later a car honk was heard

"Oh...I gotta go" and then proceeded to hug Zhane "Take care of yourself" and departed

"What? You're not going to say goodbye to me?"

Tara turned around and blankly said "bye" and hop into the car, there was his daddy driving; a red panda with more reddish-brown fur and wearing a suit. He was a bank teller

"Hi daddy"

"Hi Tara" sayed the twin sisters: Dana and Daisy

"Hi" sayed on a cheerful voice and hugged her too "How are my special girls? did something happened on school"

"Well, Mrs. Lancaster said that next week we're having a geography exam, can you help us study"

"Why, of course" and as the three sisters were chatting the father was looking with a smile on his face.

Both rabbit brothers were on his house: Jeff was watching a soccer match on TV and Zhane was trying to make the drawing that Rick again and this time was complete: he was holding a poor victim like any classic hero-carrying-rescued pose and cut the ringed section. Zhane smiled at this and put it with masking tape and put it on a wall, like some drawings that he made. He go downstairs for a glass of water

"Zhane...you didn't tell me how was your day on school" sayed his mother: a saffron yellow furred rabbit. Later he noticed the bruise on his arm

"Oh my...what happened to your arm" questioned her mother: Paula

"No...it's nothing" and the mother looked the boy's face

"That is no nothing son" sayed worried "Tell me, there's something with in your classes"

"No, no it's nothing" and then just runned to the top floor and to his room. Paula just watched him, and later looked to the elder brother

"Something happened to your brother?"

"No, and it's his problem not mine" sayed not moving a muscle

"But you're his elder brother and you're supposed to help him"

"Shut up" sayed Jeff frustrated "I'm trying to watch TV"

After a pause, Paula just sighed heavily and mumbled "I swear, everyday you're just like your father"

Angry of that words, Jeff standed up and sayed "So? I prefer to be like him instead of my sissy-ass brother, I can't believe IT is my sibling"

"Don't call him like that, ever"

"Shut. Up. Leave me alone" and later he returned to his 'comfortable position' and Paula just scoffed and go back to the kitchen.

Later, that evening. Paula go to Zhane's door and knocked it

"Zhane honey, dinner's ready"

"I'm not hungry"

Paula opened the door and sayed "Come on, you know how your father gets if you don't appear, please" and later opens the door and watches him on the door grabbing his stomach

"Zhane...you don't have to act this way, I only want to start believing on yourself and your skills...you know that I love you" and hugged him

"Thanks mom, but I don't know if my family loves me"

"You know that I do"

On dinner time, all the family was on the dinning room : His father Ernest was a tall, silver rabbit. But he was a harsh person, with Zhane especially for always considering him weak, and a disgrace.

"I want another beer" sayed Ernest

"I think you drank enough"

He exhaled by his nose and says "Paula, I work really hard to bring food to the table and I think I deserved another beer"

With an angry face, Paula go to the kitchen, later Ernest noticed Zhane and he was not eating

"Zhane? What? Why aren't you eating, Food is not free, ya know" sayed harshly

"I'm not hungry"

"I said why aren't you eating" and later Paula give him a new bottle of beer

"Please stop being so mean to him, he has a stomachache"

"Ya see woman, here you go again, spoiling him like usual"

"That's not true, calm down"

"DON'T DISCUSS WITH ME! I mean look at him: all bruised and with scars. What kind men doesn't defend himself? Only the weak, the coward and the crybaby...and you Zhane, are a weak, a coward and a crybaby"

"STOP IT ERNEST! STOP PLEASE!"

After a pause he say

"Eat Zhane, and don't cry, I want that plate clean mister, Got it?"

"STOP ERNEST! DON'T YOU SEE HE FEELS SICK"

"Can we please eat in peace?" questioned Jeff, but later Zhane decide to retreat

"Zhane...come back" but the white rabbit obviously ignoring go back to his room and lock the door

The couple was on their room discussing what happened

"This is my house and I want respect" scolded Ernest "I don't want you contradict me in front of my sons ever again, got it? I know what's good for them"

"Maybe...but with Zhane? We need to talk to someone, I think something's wrong with him"

"What that kid needs to learn is to defend himself"

"When you will understand that Zhane is different: he is skillful and sensitive"

"And a freak Paula"

"Freak?"

"Yes, Freak! Why can be like his brother?: he plays sports, he has a girlfriend, he helps me with the car and fills his hands with oil, like normal men do?"

"Like machos, actually"

Ernest stand and gripped his wife's hand tight

"Listen to me woman"

"You're hurting me"

"Get it to your stupid head: I'll fix that kid because I can"

"Oh yeah? How? beating him?"

"If it's necessary, understood?"

But everything was heard behind the door by Zhane, he felt bad because his parents were arguing again, feeling like it was his fault again

"Zhane?" is heard a voice, it was his elder brother "What are you doing?"

"I...I was...going to the bathroom" and run to the bathroom closing the door.

The next day on school, the Principal Mrs. Cortés: an brown eagle appeared to the classroom

"Sorry if I can take some of your time Ms. Meier"

"No problem Principal, come in" and the headmistress entered the classroom with someone else: he was a golden-furred Bengal tiger, with hazel eyes; for the looks seems that he was some meters taller than Zhane. He was wearing a red shirt, black cargo pants and white sneakers, also his gray backpack

"Students, these is your new classmate that recently joined us, why don't you introduce to the class"

"OK uuh, I'm Tony Carson...I like to study and sports, specially basketball and...I think that's all"

"Well, I hope you can help him to fit on the class and being good schoolmates with him; I think that's all, you can continue your class"

"Thanks Principal" and later she departed "So Tony, why don't you sit behind Zhane and if you have doubts, raise your paw"

"Thanks teacher" and later proceeded to sit behind the rabbit.

"Friendly advise: don't let the faggotry get you" whispered Rick and giggled

Tara, sitting next to him tells him

"Hi, I'm Tara Evans and this is my friend Zhane Martins, I hope we get along, and maybe after..."

"Ms. Evans" questioned the sparrow getting the attention "Is everything alright?"

"Yes, I was telling the new guy if me and Zhane can show him the school after homeroom"

Quick time to thinking, she said "Yes, sure you can?"

"Of course you can" said Rick mocking Ms. Meier's voice "The teacher's pet can do anything on the class" and the classroom giggled

"Rick! I can't allow these kind of comments on my class, next time, I think I need to talk to your father again"

"What? I was joking" said bet

"No, calling your classmates with mocking surnames is discriminating. And since you need to learn that every action has their consequences, you gonna get special homework"

"WHAT! WHY!"

"oooooo" said the rest of the classmates

"Quiet! I need you to make an essay WITH YOUR OWN WORDS about the aftermath of WWII and the funding of the UN, am I clear? AM I CLEAR"

"yes"

And later the class continued, she was talking about the Civil Rights Movement, Zhane and Tony were alternating between the class and talking to each other, Maya peeked how they're chatting and she smiled focusing again on her notebook.

"Looks like I'm going to have someone to help me, I think will get along just fine" thought to herself.
