Kenoks first hunt
#1 of The Hunter Series
this is something the beginning to what i hope will be a series of monster hunter stories, following the strong and grizzled veteran Teo and his still new companion Kenok as he teaches him how to be a hunter and survive in such a dangerous world.
The hot sun shone over head blanketing the desert in a heat almost to much for anything to bear.
Two men clad in armor plodded along the sands briskly, the heat not serving to slow them down as bad as one would think wearing as much heavy metal and padded armor as they were.Just at the foot of the mountain a small village grew smaller and smaller as they ran into the desert with a clear sign or purpose.
"come on keep up, we aren't getting paid to be lazy" a gruff voice shouted from beneath his face guard to his younger and clearly struggling to keep up companion. "give me a break Teo, I've never been out here, this heat is murder even with these drinks that the guild gave us. Its far from the cool forests near Kotoko" he wheezed out stopping for a moment to catch his breath.
The older one stop and sighed "Kenok, you were the one that insisted on coming with me to clear the Rathian out of the cave the village uses for water and fishing. I'm more then capable of doing this myself if you want to go back" he huffs stopping for a moments breath as well removing his helmet and wiping the sweat from his brow before securing it back on his head and buckling the face guard back into place.
Kenok shakes his head quickly "NO! I want to fight with you, this will be my first wyvern hunt." he protests collecting himself again and pushing onward toward to mountain in the distance with rather large mouth to it leading into the underground. Teo smiled to himself under the face guard thinking to himself "so eager to prove hes not the same goofy kid I saved that day all those years ago" he broke into a sprint quickly catching up to Kenok and beating him to the mouth of the cave.
After taking a few minutes to rest and check their weapons and gear the two stepped into the cave opening and were met with the sounds of a sleeping wyvern.
The cave was not too dark, lit enough to see down into the area where the path. sloped slightly down into a large circular embankment where the female wyvern slept soundly. Inside the air was much much cooler inside compared to the dry and sun bathed desert just outside. Teo put his finger to his mouth and signaled that she was below sleeping. With a subtle nod Kenok understood and followed behind his mentor and father figure of sorts.
Slowly and quietly they crept along the path towards the huge creature. A misstep on the paths slightly moist surface causes Kenok to lose his footing and tumble to the bottom making the Rathian to stir and wake to see what it was. Seeing the two it gets to its feet and let out a terrible roar loud enough to shake the cave.
Teo readied his weapon a huge thin blade with sparks skittering across its surface from hilt to tip. Kenok was always so amazed that he could so fluidly fight with a weapon bigger then he was "get ready, you really made her angry" Teo shouted
Kenok scrambled to his feet drawing the small sword and large shield that looked older then its user and clearly seen more battle then him as well. Kenok was frightened. Monsters like this was way out of his league and Teo could see the fear in him. "come on don't be scared, remember you're a hunter , brave and strong" Teo assures him with a hearty laugh.
Kenok is not responding his eyes fixated on the beast as it growls and drools menacingly and calms himself . Finally it starts to bull rushes Kenok its massive form rumbling the cave with every step toward him it took.
Teo quickly shoves Kenok out of the way as She collided head on with Teo's blade shoving him back several feet as he stood his ground blocking her way to his young friend. As the scaly green wyvern struggled against his blade the lighting sparked and crackled as he struggled to match the beast form shear strength before pushing hard and shoving it back before dealing three quick slaches its face before tumbling away.
Kenok watched from his prone position as Teo fought by himself striking and keeping one step ahead of it at every turn. "wow" he thought to himself "hes amazing,i couldn't ask for a better teacher and here I am letting him down" he clenched his fist angry with himself at how he was cowering. Kenok took hold of his weapon and joined in the fight leaping onto the giant scaly wyverns back. While holding on for his life Kenok gripped his sword tight and drove it down into its back sharply Needing to drive it in deeper into the Rathian's spine he thinks quickly and smashes his shield down on the but of the sword hilt.
It screechs and finally throws him off but not before swinging its tail at him and making a direct hit into his side sending him sailing through the air and crashing at the edge of the water. Kenok began to black out, he was hurt badly and losing blood from one of its tail spike penetrating his armor. Finally Kenok couldnt stay awake anymore he was tired in his slowly declining state of conciousness faded he heard a soft voice "you're gonna be okay" it said softly a hand cupping his cheek. he bleated out the word "father" before drifting away.
