#5 of Furry and Proud

Victoria

I was sleeping very good this morning. The flashbacks stopped and I finally got to relax. Then my alarm radio went on. It surprised me so much that it even gave me a little headache. My eyes were barely open, but I was swatting at that alarm radio like it was a fly. I missed a few times, but I finally got it to shut up. I was then wondering why it was on in the first place. It was Saturday. Then I looked back at the alarm radio. It was 7:00am. Then I saw this little note by the radio. It read:

"Good morning Eddy. I wanted you to get ready early so you look your best for your new friend. Now get up and go freshen up."

Like I said before, my mom is crazy. I got up, stretched a little, and went to the bathroom.

"Victoria isn't my friend," I said to my self. "So why do I have to dress up?"

"Because if you don't, your mother will punish you." Said my mom outside the bathroom door.

"Mom, what are you doing up?" I asked.

"Eddy, you know as well as I know that I can hear you from anywhere." She said. "Now hurry and get ready and don't forget to brush yourself."

"Okay." I said.

I still don't understand why she was getting so worked up about this. We are just doing a project. I soon got out of the bathroom and wasn't really surprised to see my mom right in my room waiting for me. She looked at me with disapproval.

"Oh Eddy." She said. "Look at you. Didn't I tell you to brush yourself? You have fur coming out of every angle of your body."

"I did brush mom." I said.

"Yea, like I believe that." She said noticing the lie I made. Those stinking ears of hers. "Just look at your tail. All messed up. Looks like a toilet cleaner from here."

"Come on mom, its not that bad." I said looking my tail. She was right though.

"Nope," she said. "That just simply won't do." She then pulled out a brush and said. "Come here you little fur ball."

I tried to back away, but she caught me by the ear. She started brushing my head really hard. It was as uncomfortable as can be. Trying to pull back hurt even more because she still had me by the ear.

"Oh stop whining." She said. "This is how you're supposed to be doing it. If you brush like this all the time then it shouldn't hurt."

Then she went for the tail. Man, did that hurt. I think she even pulled some fur off. After a few more painful strokes, she was finally done. She turned me around to check me and said. "There we go. You look much better." Then she handed me the brush and said. "Here, finish up while I pick out your clothes." I just threw the brush on the bed.

I looked at her in fear as she was going through my closet and just passing all my favorite clothes. My dark wolf T-shirt, my light green jacket, and even my basketball jersey.

"Why can't I wear my jersey?" I asked in a joking matter. My mom just laughed and pushed more shirts away. Then she pulled out this yellow collared shirt. I didn't even know that was in there.

"How about this?" She asked.

I shock my head and laughed. "Absolutely not." I said.

"Eddy, this looks nice." She said.

I didn't feel like arguing with her. I went through the closet and found a blank grey shirt. My mom didn't look too pleased with it though.

"Are you serious?" She said.

I smiled and said. "This is my only offer."

She laughed. "A business man, just like your father." She said. "Alright then. If you want to be boring, then be boring."

I just smiled. Then my mom's smile went away.

"You didn't cut those claws yesterday, did you." She said.

She caught me. I completely forgot.

"Wait here." she said.

I put my shirt and pants on. I was just getting ready to put my socks on until my mom came with the clippers. I knew that this meant trouble. I just put the socks down and sat on the bed. She took my left hand first and tried to make conversation as she was cutting.

"So, how do you know this girl?" She said.

"We're in the same history class. I've never really notice that..."I was interrupted by the sharp pain of one of my claws getting cut.

"OW!" I screamed.

"Oh calm down now." My mom said. "What were you saying?"

"That I never really notice her in the class. She was always so quiet and then she just asks me to...OW!"

"Asked you to what?"

"To work with her."

"Oh, that's nice. What's her name again?"

"Victoria."

My mom then finished my left hand and went to my right.

"That's a nice name." She said.

"Yea whatever." I said. Then my mom cut a big piece off my claw.

"OW. Did you do that on purpose?" I said.

"So what does she look like?" My mom said ignoring my question.

I then began to just look at a blank spot on the wall and thought of a mental image of her.

"She's kind of short. She has blond hair and I think brown eyes. I don't know." I said.

She finished my hands then went to my feet.

"Do you know anything else?" She said.

"I don't know. She was wearing green." I said with little interest.

"Interesting."

"Do you really think that's interesting?" I said. She clipped another one real fast.

"OW!" I said in agony.

"So what are you two working on?" She said.

I was still trying to recover from that last cut, but I finally said. "We're doing a project on a certain wolf tribe and what they did about..." I stopped when my mom took a huge cut in my left claw. "Oooooow!" I said. I just laid back in my bed.

"Alright, I'm done." Said my mom. "That wasn't so bad was it?"

I didn't answer. I just moaned a little bit.

She then walked out the room and said. "Breakfast is downstairs."

I got up after a while and just started thinking of stuff to pack. I decided to take pencils, my history book, a folder, and some paper. It wasn't much, but Victoria and I are just planning out the project. Then I picked up the piece of paper she gave me. The address looked foreign to me. I just put it in my pocket and decided to worry about it later. After that, I just looked out the window. I didn't really pay attention to what was going on. I just kept saying the same sentence in my head over and over. _"Don't mess this up." _

After breakfast, my dad finally got up.

"At least he's dressed." I thought.

He walked half-awake to the kitchen and started making coffee. He yawned and said. "Morning Eddy."

"Morning dad. Did you forget about taking me to Victoria's house?" I said.

"No, no I remember." He said trying not to yawn. He took a sip of his coffee.

"Did you eat already?" He asked.

"Yea, I ate already." I said. Then I thought about me and my friends going out tonight.

"He dad?" I said. "Is it okay if I go out with my friends to Uncle Joe's tonight?"

I know my dad trusts me when I'm out with my friends, but I sure wasn't going to tell him about the club. He took another sip of his coffee and said. "Sure, just don't be out too late, alright."

"Thanks." I said.

When my dad finished his coffee, I showed him the address Victoria gave me. He looked at in a puzzling way then looked at me.

"This is where she lives?" He said.

I nodded my head yes. He just looked at the paper again.

"Do you know where it is?" I asked.

"Yea I do. I just..." He paused.

"What?"

"I didn't think she would live that far up."

"What do you mean?"

My dad didn't answer. He just patted my head and said. "Come on, you'll see."

I got my things and followed him to the car.

The car ride was pretty boring. My dad just played his jazz CDs the whole way. He tried singing along, but he kept stopping every time he realized I was in the car. I tried to ask him if we can change it, but he kept saying. "My car, my radio, my music."

After looking out the window for a while, I started to become more and more unfamiliar with the area we were in. We went from people in baggy clothes, listening to music, to people in suits, talking on their headsets. From apartments to skyscrapers.

"Uh dad?" I said. "Are we still in Chicago?"

He laughed and said. "Yea, we are. We're just a little closer to the city."

He looked at me for a short time then nudged me to wake me up. I wasn't asleep, but it probably looked like I was. The car ride was like 5 hours.

"How long have we been riding?" I asked.

"About 40 minutes." My dad said.

I couldn't believe that. I guess I was just tired.

"So who is this girl anyway?" My dad asked.

"Her name is Victoria. She's in my history class."

"Oh history. Have you talked to her before?"

"No I haven't. Man, why are you and mom asking so much questions about her?"

"Watch your attitude." My dad said. "I just want you to be sure about this that's all."

"Alright. Hey, speaking of mom, won't she need the car to go to work?"

My dad smiled a little and said. "Oh, she can take the bus."

"You want to tell her that, because I don't feel like dying today." I said. We both laughed.

Then I got bored again. I put the window down and stuck my arms and head out. Just laying there with the wind blowing around me was relaxing.

"Get your head back in the car." My dad said.

"Why, it feels nice." I said.

"Because we're here. That's why."

I looked up to see where we were. We were parked on the side of the road with a tall black building next to us.

"This is the place?" I asked. My dad nodded his head.

We got out and went inside. The place wasn't extravagant, but it looked pretty nice. It looked better than my place. We saw this guy at the counter with a surprised look on his face. I bet he doesn't see a lot of furries walk in here.

"Can I help you?" He said.

My dad was looking around the lobby before finally noticing the guy.

"Uh yes, my son is here to see Victoria to work on a school project." My dad said.

The man picked up a phone and said. "Names?"

"Eddy." I said.

The man pressed a few buttons and waited a while.

_ "Man, all this just to see one girl."_ I thought.

"Hi Mr. Stevens, there's an Eddy here to see Victoria." Said the man. Then he just nodded his head and said. "Alright I'll send him over."

He hung up the phone.

"Floor 18." He said.

My dad and I just walked to the elevator and pressed the button. I didn't really know why my dad was following me, but I wasn't going to test him. When the elevator opened, there was this woman that was going to come out, but stopped and looked at us. I just smiled and waved at her. She gave us a strange look and walked past us. I had a feeling that we were going to see a lot more of those looks. We walked in the elevator and looked for the right floor. There were about 20 floors in the building. That was probably 10 times the size of my house. My dad pressed the 18 button and the doors closed. We waited there as the elevator slowly went from floor to floor. We didn't talk, but we both knew that we were going to cause an awkward moment for this other family. I didn't know about my dad, but I was thinking that it would be funny to see their faces when they see us.

Finally, the elevator reached floor 18. My dad and I walked out into the hallway and walked around. Then I realized that music was playing. A piano. I started to follow the sound. I ended up at a door. I opened it and found this huge room with leather black furniture and a huge TV. The walls were white and the floors had some carpeting. It was crazy. My dad followed behind me and said. "Wow, some place." I completely agreed.

I kept following the music while my dad just stood there by the door. The place looked real nice. As I was walking I saw this huge glass case. It had some pictures of Victoria and her parents. Then I focused back on the music. It was a very classical song. Soon, I finally came to the room where the music came from. I saw Victoria playing this big grand piano. I was behind her and she was facing the piano. She was completely focused. I was going to call to her, but I decided to let her finish. The song was alright, but I know that I wouldn't want someone to distract me when I'm playing guitar. As I was listening, I walked in a little closer. Victoria stopped playing then turned around quickly to look at me. I guess she heard me.

"Hello." I said. She looked kind of surprised. She didn't even say anything for a while.

"Everything alright?" I asked.

"No, I mean...yes everything is fine, it's just that...your here." Victoria said in a nervous way.

I looked around the room and said. "Uh yea, I'm here."

I walked over to her. She stood up from the piano, still looking nervous.

"This is a pretty cool place you got here." I said. "Very fancy."

"Thank you." She said, a bit more relaxed this time. Then there was silence. I was going to say something until I heard footsteps coming towards the room. Victoria noticed my ears twitching to the sound.

"Everything okay?" Victoria asked.

"Is your dad wearing dress shoes?" I asked.

Victoria had a surprised look and said. "Yes, yes he is but how did you..." She was interrupted by this male voice behind me. It was Mr. Stevens.

"Victoria, why did you stop?" He said. Then he stopped walking. He was silent.

I tried to break the awkward moment. I turned around and smiled at him. He had black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a suit with a red tie.

"Hello, Mr. Stevens." I said.

He then looked at Victoria and said. "This is Eddy?"

Victoria nodded her head yes. Then my dad walked in the room and tapped Mr. Stevens on the shoulder. Mr. Stevens turned around.

"Henry Crawford. Nice to meet you." My dad said extending his hand.

Mr. Stevens shook his hand back.

"Connor Stevens." He said back. "It looks like our children are doing a little project. Please make yourself comfortable."

My dad then seemed more relaxed.

"No that's okay." My dad said. "I just wanted to know where to pick my son up. I should go." My dad looked at me and said. "Call me when you're done." Then he left.

"Well then." Mr. Stevens said after taking a deep breath. "I guess I should go to work then. You two...uh...have fun." He left while fixing his tie.

"Well, now that we got introductions out of the way, lets get to work."

"Oh...right, of coarse." Said Victoria. "Follow me."

She guided me through the hallway into her room. When I walked into her room, I walked into a pink mess. She had a pink bed, pink chairs, and pink rug in the center of all of it. Luckily the walls were still white to keep the pink craze contained.

"Wooooow." I said. "I guess I know your favorite color now."

"Yea, I know it's a little girly, but...here's my room." Said Victoria. I still sensed her nervous attitude towards me. It was starting to get annoying, but I guess I couldn't blame her.

I was going to sit on her, but she yelled before I could.

"Wait!" She said.

I stood absolutely still. She then guided me to a chair and sat me down.

"I just made my bed and I like to keep it real neat." She said.

"You can not be serious." I thought.

Victoria sat down at her computer and started looking up something. I soon figured out that the chair I was in could spin. I started off swaying from side to side.

"So what tribe were you thinking of doing?" Said Victoria.

"I'm not sure." I said barley paying attention.

I started spinning in the chair. Then an idea hit me.

"There is this one tribe that I know." I said. "I just can't think of the name."

"Do you know anything else about them?" Asked Victoria.

I kept spinning in the chair and thinking. "They were a wolf tribe, they were somewhere in New York, and I think the chief was called..."

"Cha!" Scream Victoria. She surprised me enough to make me loose my balance and fall off the chair.

"Oh my gosh!" Said Victoria. "Are you okay?"

"Yea, I'm fine." I said. She tried to help me up, but I stopped her.

"No, don't help me up." I said. "I'm kind of dizzy anyway. So what did you say?"

"Cha. He was the last chief of the mohawton tribe."

Victoria then looked on her computer.

"Here it is." She said. "The mohawton tribe was one of the first tribes in New York to fight against the settlers and..."

She stopped reading.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

She looked at me then looked back at the computer and read. "After three long battles, the mohawton tribe was completely whipped out and Cha was the last of his people to die. It is believed that his finally words were, 'I will die a mohawton, not survive as slave."

There was a moment of silence. Those were some powerful words from a wolf that chose to die instead of obeying the human settlers. I was contemplating that thought in my head for a while.

"I'm sorry." Said Victoria.

"For what?" I said. She didn't answer back.

"That happened in the pass." I said. "You had nothing to do with it."

"Oh." Said Victoria. "I'm sorry."

"Stop apologizing."

"Sorry...oops, I mean."

I stood up from the floor and laid against the wall.

"Alright, I had enough." I said. "We need get a little more comfortable with each other."

Victoria had a confused face. Then I heard Mr. Stevens' footsteps again.

"Goodbye Victoria, see you after work." He said.

"Bye." Said Victoria.

"Anyway," I said. "This is what we're going to do. We are both going to interview each other. One person asks any question he or she wants and the other person has to answer it no matter what."

"I don't know about this." Said Victoria.

"Fine. To be fair I will let you go first."

Victoria started to think for a while and said. "How old are you?"

"15."

"What's your favorite color?"

"Blue."

"What's you favorite type of music?"

"RnB"

Victoria had a confused face. "What's RnB?"

That completely shocked me, but I didn't want to make it a big deal.

"It means rap and blues." I said.

"What's your..."

I stopped her question and said. "Okay I know that you have much more serious questions so just ask away."

At first Victoria seemed worried, but then she finally started to relax and said. "How could you tell my father was coming?"

I laughed and said. "Wolves have a pretty good sense of hearing."

"Do you find it annoying to have all that fur?"

I laughed again and said. "Well, since I was born with it, no it doesn't bother me."

"Can you move your ears on command?"

I moved my ears up and down. Victoria seemed completely amazed.

"What is it like having a tail?"

"It's fine. I brush it, take care of it and all that."

"Can you control it too?"

"No," I said looking at my tail. "The thing has a mind of its own."

Victoria laughed.

"Can you make any sounds of a wolf?"

I took a deep breath and howled. I didn't do it too loud though. I remembered that there are people living above and below us. Victoria had a huge smile on her face.

"That was so cool." She said.

"Are you done yet?" I asked.

"Can I ask a few more?"

"Okay."

Victoria looked at my claws.

"Do you ever use your claws?" She said.

"Besides scratching, no. It's illegal to have claws too long." I said.

"Did you ever have fleas?"

"Yes and that was the worst week of my life."

Victoria laughed.

"Okay, okay last question" I said.

Victoria thought for a little while and asked. "What made you agree to work with me?"

I was silent. I really didn't know why, it just happened. I thought for a little while and said. "I don't know. I guess I just wanted...something new."

Victoria smiled.

"Alright, my turn." I said. "What's your favorite type of music?"

"Classical." Said Victoria.

"Who is your favorite artist?"

"Beethoven."

"Who's you favorite artist that is still alive?"

Victoria thought for a while and said. "I'm not sure."

"Okay, why do live so far from the school?"

"My father works for this very important company called Storm Industries and, in order to get to his office, he has to move kind of close to the building. I also begged him to send me to a regular school. So in the end we both compromised."

"Where's your mother?"

Victoria looked down and said. "She died."

"Oh." I said. "I'm sorry."

"Don't worry, it happened in the past. You had nothing to do with it."

I laughed a little and asked. "What are all those trophies for?"

"Spelling bees, debate team, and piano. Mostly piano."

"Wow. I play guitar, but I never won a trophy for it."

"There is still time. You can try out for a..."

"No, no that's okay." I said. "So, since your dad probably works all day, what do you do here all alone?"

"Oh, homework, piano, watch movies." Then Victoria looked out the window. "But sometimes,...I just look out my window and look out into the world. I don't really go out much, but just watching the people outside makes me think that I do."

I paused. Almost instantly, I had a flashback of me in my old room. Just me looking out into the world.

"Um, Eddy?" Said Victoria.

The flashback stopped and she had my attention again.

"Why did you want to work with me?" I asked.

Victoria looked down again and said. "Well, I hear what people say about you. That you're nice, fun and that you respect all people." She paused, and then spoke again. "I also never talked to a fury before. So I thought you could be the first."

There was silence. No one said anything. We just looked at each other. I started to look at the wall.

_ "What is happening here?"_ I thought. _"I've never met a human like this before." _

Victoria then put her hand on my knee and said. "I also think that the way people treat you is unfair. People are usually afraid of what they don't understand."

"So what about you then?" I said. "Are you afraid?"

She then sat down in front of me and said. "No...I'm interested in things I don't understand. That's how I learn."

I looked at her for a while. She wasn't lying. I could see the seriousness in her eyes.

"You really are something special." I said.

Victoria smiled and said. "So are you."

She then got up and went to the computer.

"So, are you ready to get this project done partner." Said Victoria.

I got up, sat on a chair and said. "Sure thing, partner."
