#4 of Close Combat

Sol was yanked to conciousness by something running up a nearby tree. Opening his eyes, he watched the vixen run into a bush. He chuckled, standing. "Feeling a bit scared?" He asked, looking in the bush she'd been in and pulling out the mouse. "I shall call you.... Alexandre!" He said, chuckling. Then he put the mouse down and walking to the bush she was in. Kneeling down, he parted the leaves and smiled. "I'm not going to hurt you. I don't have any reason to anymore. I'm not in the compitition. If you decide to give me a chance, I'll be over there." With that he stood and walked off, swatting the bush with his tail. Returning to his spot, he sat down again, one hand on a gun. He was soon in a light sleep, alert to everything around him but still resting. After about five minutes he yawned an raised his gun, shooting a human in the skull moments before he'd lunged at him. Smiling sleepily, Sol holstered his gun and went into a deeper sleep.

A little gold fox cuddled againt Solaris, murring gently. Sol murred too, because he liked being close to his older sister. On his other side lay his younger brother, and on HIS side was his older brother. The small litter lay together, their parents nowhere in sight. Then there was a yelp. Sol was up, his fur bristling. His sister had been taken! Sol lunged foreward...

Sol sighed as he came back to wakefullness. He could never finish that damn dream!

Mimi stayed there for a few seconds before coming out. She looked over to the fox. Well it was now or never. She padded over to him but she stayed on fours. Her ears lopped everything told her to run away from here but she just made a slow bee line for Solaris.

Once she made her way over to him she curled up leaning against him. At least it was another warm body. Most importantly another anthro of the same species. Her ears picked up a bit but lopped again. He had a gun and she didn't know how he was going to use it on. Her eyes wandered to the direction of the tent. Then back to what was in front of her.

She didn't look at the other fox. She was scared for the moment. She was never this uneasy at a tournament but with this fox acting like a stalker... well yea. "Why do you want to help... I'm useless..." She muttered

Sol yawned and blinked when the vixen leaned against him. He frowned when she called herself useless. "Nobody's useless in the grand scheme of things." He said. "Let's just say I have an unusualy... Lone outlook on life and the chance to be around someone of my own kind, however slim, short or forced, was very appealing. Sorry, again, for all that that I did." He looked at her and, smiling, he scanned the area. Nothing much. Crickets, grasshoppers, the occasional owl. Sol looked at the vixen. "You never told me your name." he said, looking at her and running a hand down her back. But he wasn't gonna go too far. He kept himself from going too low, and only touched her briefly, and only with his fingertips. He turned his gaze to their surroundings. If someone came along they wouldn't lay a finger on them. A mouse, brownish, scurried up. Picking it up, Sol smiled and said,"You are Gonzalez, mi amigo." Gonzalez looked up at him, his whiskers twitching, before jumping down and continued on it's way. Sol watched him scurry off, chuckling to himself. Some people may think him crazy, but he did this whenever he was nervous and had something to name. And right now he was VERY nervous. If he made one mistake with her he could end up making her leave. That wasn't a particularly appeasing thought, especially considering that he liked her, liked the warmth they shared. Then again she was the first in a VERY long time to sit near him. He risked a glance at her, then returned it to the forest. He sighed. "I don't think anything'll happen until sunrise, but if it does just know I'm not going to run off." He said. He looked at her and smiled. "So get some rest."

He sniffed the air, listening carefully for any sounds, then relaxed again. He REALLY hoped nothing went down. Sol smiled, a thought crossing his mind. "My "old man" said I was no better than a guard dog with thumbs and a slightly larger brain if I wouldn't kill everything I could." Hatred dripped from his voice when he said 'old man'. "I never killed unless the one I killed tried to hurt me... And now look at me. I'm sitting with a beautiful vixen listening to the sounds of night." He sighed, his voice light for the first time since he'd returned her clothes. "A bit farther than he ever got. Or ever will get." He risked moving his arm around her back, mostly to return a little bit of warmth. "He'd probably call me weak if he saw me. But truthfully? I'd rather sit with you instead of shooting and killing whatever I think is weak." He managed a weak smile. "Then again, I have a heart under all of this flesh and fur. All he had under his skin was hatred." He shook his head sharply. Don't get sappy on her now!

She looked at him. She got his name but ran off before every time before she gave him her name. She shoved herself against him, manly making herself comfortable. "My names Mimi." She yawned.

She nodded and decided to get some sleep. She used her tail as a pillow. Things weren't as scary with another warm body around, well one that probably wouldn't kill her. Her ears relaxed as she nuzzled her tail. She wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying afterwards. Then again Mimi had wasted so much energy. From running away to falling in traps.

While she was dreaming she was having the dream she normally had. Playing fetch with a kid. She didn't mind the dream, at least it was peaceful. While she was sleeping she rolled onto her back then was curled up again. She still had doubts about Solaris, but she didn't trust a lot of people what were once opponents.

Mimi even with her doubts was fairly comfortable around him. She could still feel a warm body besides her so she felt safe enough

Solaris smiled at her sleeping form. 'She must be exhausted.' He thought, sighing. 'I know I am. But oh well, not the first time I've gone a night without sleep.' He ran his hand along her back again, not really thinking about it. His gaze ran across the area, keeping a sharp watch for monsters or competitors. But it was silent, considering where they were, and nothing seemed to be moving. Then sol froze. It was silent. Completly. Not even a cicada was making a sound. Slowly So unzipped his pack and put a silencer on his Desert Eagle. He didn't want any gunshots to disturb Mimi. He glanced around, watching carefully. Then he saw a human walk onto the path, looking right at them. Solaris took carefull aim and fired. He actually did pretty well, considering the fact he hadn't raised his gun but instead had fired it from his side. The gun let out a muted Pop and the human jerked, blood blossoming from his shoulder. Two more shots found him, one in the chest and one on the forehead. The blood blossomed like some kind of gruesom flower. He fell without a sound. Sol grimaced. But if he'd come any closer he'd have attacked. Sol sighed, his blue eyes closed. "Why'm I so protective of her?" He wondered aloud, opening his eyes and looking at the sky through a break in the trees. "I barely know her..." He blinked as lightning flashed, and cringed at the thunder that followed. He quickly removed his jacket, carefull not to disturb Mimi, and lay it over her, covering her head with his tail. Her legs and feet were still exposed, but he couldn't help that. Another flash, another rumble, and rain started pouring down. Sol sighed. "Wash away the evils of the world and leave only beauty in your wake." He spoke the little chant out of habit, as he always said it when it started to rain.

And it always seemed to work.

The loud clashes in the sky woke Mimi from her dream but she was more asleep then awake. She opened one eye and looked up to a bushy tail over her head. She heard another clash of thunder her ears picked up. She loved rainy days but hated it when it brought its noisy friends. She pushed his tail with her front paw just enough to see what as going on.

She saw the rain and smiled but her ears would twitch when the lightning was loud enough to stress her ears. Well with ears designed for long distance hearing would mean that loud noises were loud to her ears. Once the next clash came along she was a little spooked. Her tail puffed up, Mimi quickly started to flatten it with her front paws.

She saw that his tail was still on her head. She nudged it off with her left front paw then used both front paws and started to flick them gently with her paws. Much like a kitten would. Well she wasn't a very mature around an anthro that didn't seem like a threat... well most of the time. She grew bored of his tail fairly quick so she settled down.

She sat up then leaned against him. She was warming up to him. Well, if she wasn't dead yet maybe he wasn't a so bad. She bit his left ear gently and pulled it over to where she could nibble on it comfortably. Being in a Battle Royal she was pretty careless of the fact anyone could come and attempt to kill her. Well she did have her playful moments. That and she wanted to see what Solaris would do.

Solaris had dipped and swung his tail when she started playing with it, but had let it fall to the ground, out of the rain, when she stopped. He managed to keep from doing much of anything when she started nibbling on his ear. "I take it I redeemed myself?" He asked, glancing at her. He smiled, poking her nose with his tail. He looked at the sky and wrinkled his nose as a drop of water landed right between his eyes. He smiled and looked at Mimi from the corner of his eye. "You seem to be enjoying yourself." He said. He kept one arm around her, and the other was holding his silenced gun out of sight, slowly unscrewing the silencer so hecould put it back. He didn't want her to know he'd drawn his gun. He grinned mischeviously and tugged his ear away from her. Despite what people would think, the muscles in his ears could moving them in intricate ways, should he wish it so. He waved it in front of her for a second then poked her nose with it and pulled it back, just barely out of range. "So tell me, why did you get wrapped up in this buisness?" He asked, glanceing up and blinking immediatly after as a raindrop landed on his eye. "Someone as beautiful as you shouldn't risk getting hurt.

Mimi attempted to get his ear again, her eyes followed it's moments but as soon as she tried to bite it it was out of her reach. She kept trying but she grew tired of his ear... even if it was long, fluffy, and fun to chew on. She stopped to listen to his question. "Well it pays well, besides what else is there to do besides sell myself for the pleasure of another man." She told him. Well she wasn't going back to that. She would rather break every bone in her body before selling herself.

She grinned licking his cheek a few times. More or less being friendly, she would get his ear later. She just wanted to cuddle a bit before nibbling on his ear, that and trying distracting him. Well she enjoyed distracting anyone, it was fun to push buttons when ever possible.

Well she just wanted to see what made him tick. If he was the kind of guy that 'Shoots first and thinks later' or something else and him being a another, and a fox non the less might mean a future mate. Well that probably wouldn't happen, they might go there separate ways once the Battle Royal was over. She guessed it would happen, it always happened when she meet up with someone. Well she had her fun with them... not that kind of yiffy fun. She nudged him with her front paw before she went back to licking him cheek.

Well Mimi was acting a little friendlier then normal but it's not everyday she saw another fox. She would enjoy the moment and see what happened after the Royal was over. Besides it seemed like enough time had passed. Well she thought enough time had passed. She would ask him if they told him anything about how much time was left after she pushed more buttons.

Sol shivered at the thought of Mimi selling herself. "I didn't mean that. But now that you mention it, you're right. Jobs for females of any kind are pretty limited." He sighed. "Besides, you're too beautiful to be in that line of work." He smiled and looked around, just out of habit. "'Let the rain come and wash away my sorrows...'" He said it with almost a musical tone in his voice. "'And let hope spring from the remains. Life is just a path, with eyes watching always. It's your time to shine, don't let the past dull you.'" He smiled. "It's part of a song I remember from when I was younger. I only remember that bit, though."

He looked at her, trying to keep from remembering the last time he'd felt this close to someone. "Heh... Sounds stupid, doesn't it? But I feel connected to it. The part where it says 'it's your time to shine'. I think it charecterizes my magic." He shrugged, slipping the silencer into his pack and zipping it shut, holstering his gun. He hoped she hadn't heard it. He looked up, eyes searching the area. "So Mimi, what're you planning on doing after the battle's over?" He asked, yawning. Everything seemed quiet, after he'd killed the human. Sol was pretty sure the rain would keep Mimi from smelling the kill until morning at least. He sighed and licked Mimi's cheek. "But I really don't get why you don't have someone to help out." He was gonna regret what he was about to say, but.... "Like... You know, a mate or something." He wasn't trying to suggest anything. If he'd sounded like he suggested something, it was purely accidental.

Mimi thought about what she was going to do. Maybe sleep, enter another contest, she didn't know. "I'm not sure, probably sleep or something" She thought about it for a second. She would have to get a ticket for a ride back home so she might be stuck here for a while, then again a lot of ships to Daiadem. So she probably wouldn't have to wait a long time.

Mimi gave Solaris an odd look about her not having someone else to help out. "I use to but... he never loved me..." Her ears lopped as she looked to the ground. "He just saw me as a nice piece of tail and got away with it." She thought maybe he should run away. Maybe Solaris thought she was a dirty little vixin. "I'm just not sure about finding another mate. I don't want to run into another horrible anthro..." She told him not making much eye contact.

"Well what about you? Why don't you have some fancy fox? I'm sure everyone doesn't thing your fur is weird." Heck Mimi having sliver fur was weird. Most foxes don't have sliver fur and those who do only have it during the winter. Well most foxes have the orange or red fur. Well she didn't see anything wrong with his fur. She was friends with many oddly colored anhros.

Solaris shrugged. "You're actually the first not to make any negitive comment on my fur." He smiled. "Well, I have to admit you have a fine tail. But you're kind, as far as I can tell, and, though you're a bit stubborn, you don't seem afraid to make friends." He nuzzled her, breathing in her scent. "I'm not the kind of fur who only cares about looks." He said, not really thinking as he spoke. "And I don't bail on my friends." He realized that she must have heard this many times before, but he wasn't going to lie to her. He licked her cheek again and smiled. "I bet you've heard this too many times before, huh?" He lay back against the tree, feeling the bark through his fur, which was becoming matted. Unlike most animals, or anthros, he didn't get much smaller without his fur. Unless you count the tail. "Do you like the rain?" He asked, watching the rain roll off her shoulder. His jacket was waterproof, which had saved him too many times to count. He breathed in the clean smell of the rain. He disliked the rain because it wiped all the scents away, but he liked it more for many different reasons. He still preferred the sun, though. He closed his eyes, leaning just enough so that he could still smell her wonderful scent despite the rain.

Mimi looked at him for a second, then back at the ground. She didn't know what to say. He might be lying or he might not be. She was going to be sure to make sure that, who ever her next mate was, he wasn't some good for nothing jerk that stole from her. Solaris seemed like a good person but she wasn't sure. Well she should let some old mate let her down. She smiled and looked back over to Solaris and gave his cheek a quick lick before she went to nibbling his ear.

Well Mimi was happy with Solaris at the moment. She was thinking about quitting the Battle Royal if he wanted her to. Well she decided to ask if he knew how much time was left. "When you went in the tent did they tell you how much time was life?" She asked and stopped pestering his ear waiting for an answer.

Her tail flickered as she wrapped it around him. She noticed his fur was matted. Well she kept herself well brushed so she never worried much, then again Mimi was making sure she looked good for any occasion. Which could be a reason for all her troubles. She murred lightly nuzzling up to him a bit. Well it seemed like he was bullet proof to any buttons she tried to push so she guessed he didn't mind the attention

Solaris paused for a moment. "No, but this is only the first night. If I'm right, in about 3 hours it'll be the halfway point." He held her close, enjoying the warmth. Her fur was soft, which meant she kept herself well-groomed. Despite his dip in the water his fur was still a dull yellow, not the brilliant gold it looked like when it was properly cleaned. 'I'll have to take a long bath after the Battle's over.' He thought to himself. He figured the water would turn to mud the moment he got in, but that was the price you pay when all you can do is fight and walk. He breathed in her scent for the third time in 5 seconds. She was intoxicating, almost enough so to get him drunk off her scent. But that was impossable. He ran his hand down mimi's spin, pressing gently, massaging out any kinks he found. "Are you planning on finding a new mate?" He asked, as soon as the thought came to mind. Then he mentally beat himself to a bloody pulp. 'Why do you need to know that?!' He asked himself, though the answer was quite obvious. 'You're a frickin' idiot, you know that? An attention-deprived idiot, but still an idiot.' Sighing, Solaris pushed all the thoughts from his mind. 'It's better to ask now and accept the concequences than never to ask and suffer the agony of curiosity.' He thought dismissively.

Well three hours from the announcement. So the wait wouldn't be painfully long. If there were more then 12 people standing she would leave. There wasn't enough time to kill that many people because of the large battle field and so few people. Well after the number off kills that Solaris and Mimi did surely there were fewer then 12 left.

She was going to nibble on his ear but t seemed like he wanted her as a mate. Her ears lopped, Mimi wasn't really sure how to deal with this. She had so many failed attempts at finding a mate. It was somewhat depressing; so many guys would act like someone good then turn out to be a jerk. "I'm not sure if I plan on finding another mate..." She let out a sigh. Well how did she know that Solaris wasn't a two-face.

"Solaris... Look I feel that you want to be my mate but I'm just not sure. I don't know if it's a game or you being honest." She let out a sigh and nuzzled up to him a bit. "I just don't want the same thing to happen again." She didn't want to trust someone and then see them leave a month later. It kind of hurt even if all the wounds were mental. She knew that a fox doesn't mate for life but you would like to stay with one guy. "I mean I like you but I'm just not sure yet..." She yawned her ears relaxed a bit.

Solaris nearly stopped breathing when she spoke. Why is it these things surprised him whenever they occured, yet he KNEW they were gonna occur? He smiled and nuzzled her. What was he going to say? What COULD he say?! He settled on a few simple words. "Do what you think is right. If you feel you can't trust me, then don't. If you feel like you can trust me, then trust me." What he was about to say made him wonder on his own sanity. (And probably not for the reasons you might think.) "If you want to go, I won't stop you. But I hope you can trust me, because despite earlier..." Go on! Say it! Too late to turn back now! Sol swollowed, took a breath, and continued. "I think I fell in love with you." He finished, keeping his gaze averted. 'Holy hell did I just say that?' He thought, his mind spinning. 'Did I seriously just say that? Am I out of my mind?!?! Well, hell, she probably guessed it anyway. Besides, it's too late to take it back.' His face burned red-hot under his fur, and he was glad he had fur. If he didn't then this whole situation would be a LOT harder to handle without being embarressed further. His heart felt like it was about to burst out and say hello. Luckily he found Alexandre and picked him up with his right hand. He promptly set about examining every inch of the mouse that had scared the fur off of the vixen beside him.

Mimi's ears picked up a bit. Well she still wasn't sure about trusting him fully. Sure he wanted her dead before. Now that he wasn't fighting he was like a personal body guard. Well what would happen if they meet in the fighting ring again? It could be sweet talk in the end. People do dirty things to come up as top dog.

She quickly looked to the ground. Well he just said what she thought he did. Her ears were straight up but they soon loped He thinks he loves me... but for how long... She thought somewhat depressed. It was just hard to think about things like this. Well she already hit 'Fool me once shame on you' along with 'fool me twice shame on me' She wasn't going to hit the third, even if she was gullible.

She gave some time to think about everything. Maybe she should leave him; she felt that she loved him, but what if everything was a lie in the end and everything said today was just a regret later on. She didn't take much notice at the mouse. She was to busy stuck in thoughts. Give him a chance... She told herself.

Her ears picked up "I love you to but I think it's too early to be jumping to conclusions." She just hoped he wasn't hurt about what she has said. Well she didn't need him doing a hit and run. Also she didn't want to take care of cubs on her own.

Finally Sol got his mind back, and the burning in his face had faded to a dull heat. He took a deep breath and sighed. How do people manage to say that? He shook himself physicly and mentally and looked at her. "I understand. Take as long as you'd like." He held her close, breathing in her scent. She liked him too? 'Wow.... I thought I'd get punched somewhere, like in the gut or face or something, and she'd walk off, forgetting she had my jacket on and I'd never see either of them again.' Solaris thought, laying his head on hers and running his hand down her back slowly, under his jacket. He smiled, running her words through his head again and again. Because of that he almost missed the snap of a twig. But he caught it, and he knew it was big. Huge, in fact, because the twig was actually a tree. Sol was up immediatly, and his stomach pitted when he saw what had broken the tree. A humongous lizard. "Probably the one who made that trail." he thought aloud. "Shit! I can only do one thing to kill this thing, and--NO YOU DON'T!" He jumped back, barely dodging the lizard's claws. "It'll drain me completly.... Shit, I never even tried it!" But he had to use it. His right hand glowed faintly, then a surge of energy poured into it, creating a small orb. The orb slowly increased in size. The lizard stared at the bright golden orb in Sol's hand, temporarily frozen. Sol grunted. His legs nearly gave out as the energy was sucked out of them. He raised his hand, aiming right at the beast. He sneared. "This'll do a LOT more than break your skull in. SOLAR BURST!" Immediatly the orb spun from his hand, throwing him on his back and creating a trough beneath it as it sped to the lizard. It barely had enough time to breathe before the orb pounded into it, distorting it's features fiercly before expanding exponentially, consuming the lizard's entire body. Then it was gone, leaving a large hole and a tip of a giant lizard's tail.

Sol groaned, laying ten feet from where he'd fired, up against a tree. 'Damn that hurt!' He thought.

((Bwahahahahahaahahahaha! Betcha didn't see that coming, after that soft scene! Yes, Sol has a lot of power. More now than when me and Bunny were RPing this. Buuut you'll see all that in due time. For the time being, rate and review! Oh, and Robert? This was quite possibly the best part of this bit of our over all RPing time. I laughed my ass off at Sol's discomfort.

Sol: HEY!

Me: What? I did. XD Anyway, rate and review, looking forward to some criticism!!!))
