Chapter 6: Another death sentence

Ramirez sat in his cell, enchanted iron bars surrounded him, and there was no other prisoner besides him. The two guards that where here to keep an eye on him were not here. They were in a different room, probably playing card games or such. He sighed, was this the end of his time, was this as far as he went?

He had overheard the two guards speaking of a huge hunting party that had been established to find the dragon he had saved, Na T'hel; he hoped she would be alright. He didn't regret killing the two Dragoons, for one should not kill another self-aware being for one's own glory, especially not in the name of the Dragoons, even if that creature is a dragon.

He lowered his head, and started thinking about the recent events, but his thoughts stopped at one moment, the dream he had the night before he and Na T'hel split up. He could not get it out of his head, the voice that spoke to him in the dream. What did it say? The voice echoed through his head, it sounded as if someone whispered it in his ear, but yet it was so distant.

He looked up, expecting to see someone leaning over him and talking to him, but there was no one there, just the walls and the cells around him. Feeling disappointed he lay down on the makeshift bed on the floor; the chair he had sat on was old and looked like it would fall apart at any moment. He closed his eyes, waiting, waiting for his punishment.

But a thought struck him, in the dream he could not hear the voice, but he heard it clearly now, he shrugged and mumbled to himself "Probably my imagination..."

His peace was interrupted when suddenly a pair of huge wooden doors opened in the cell opposite of his, the sun peaked in between the two doors, and behind it was a group of Dragoons with a large wagon, and there she was, Na T'hel, captured and out cold.

A few days passed before she regained consciousness, when she did wake, her wounds had already healed. She raised her head a little bit, and looked around the room a bit, but stopped at him, "Ramirez?"

Her eyes seemed to glow brighter than last time they met; he nodded at the dragon "Na T'hel."

She looked around the room a bit more, she was stressed and worried as Ramirez sighed, "You didn't make it home."

Na T'hel looked at Ramirez, and lay her head down on the floor, she looked pitiful, weak and frail, this wasn't right, she had done nothing, and he was the criminal here, not her. She let out a loud sigh "Are you ok, Ramirez?"

Ramirez shook his head in another sigh "Yeah, I'm fine, don't worry, but how about you, are you ok?"

She adjusted her tail slightly "I'm fine, my wounds have healed, but they'll probably execute us."

Ramirez faked a smile, how could he be happy in these circumstances? He had lost everything, and now he was going to die, "Yeah, I figured as much."

The night closed in on them, he felt tired, so he lay down on the makeshift bed on the floor, but he couldn't sleep, he and Na T'hel didn't talk much during the day, they were quiet, waiting for their end.

Na T'hel looked over to Ramirez, and then around the room a bit, looking for a possible escape, but there was nothing. A guard sat on a chair, leaning against Ramirez's cell, she gnarled at the armored guard "When is the execution?"

The guard snapped to attention, nearly falling of the chair he sat on. "M-me?"

Na T'hel looked at him, and leaned her head. "No, the other Guard in this room."

He stood up, looking unsure. "I-its tomorrow actually, Dragon."

Ramirez sat up, looked at the guard. "So, we die tomorrow. Kid, what would you do if you knew your time was coming? I know I'd like to spend it with my friends and family. So could I get into her cell, she's the only friend I have."

The guard turned around, frightened for some reason. "I-I'd have to take that with the warden."

He quickly walked out the room. Na T'hel looked over to Ramirez, with a confused look on her face "Why?"

Ramirez giggled a little, as Na T'hel let out a quiet laugh Ramirez stood up, "We go down tomorrow, and you're the only friend I have right now." They looked at each other, snickering a little, but why? They would die; they both knew it was inevitable and unavoidable.

They were abruptly interrupted when the guard came back into the room, with the warden close behind him. "Well I don't see a problem with it, that man wouldn't do anything, and the dragon...

Ramirez stood up and walked to the door of his cell. "Warden."

The warden was an aged man, looked like he was around fifty years old; he had a scar on his forehead, a veteran. He unlocked the cage and let Ramirez walk out, locking the cell behind him. "So you want to spend the night with her?"

The warden nodded towards Na T'hel and looked Ramirez in the eyes as he shook his head, "Yeah."

"Any special reasons?" The warden said as he unlocked a smaller barred door to Na T'hels cage.

Ramirez sighed "If my execution really is tomorrow, I wish to spend my last hours with a friend, and she is the only friend I have left."

The warden nodded silently, without another word to the warden Ramirez stepped in.

Ramirez sat down next to Na T'hel and leaned at her, and she turned her eyes to Ramirez. "Friends, we barely know each other."

Ramirez smiled. "But we are, aren't we? I saved you, you didn't eat me."

He laughed and Na T'hel smiled and they laid there for a while in silence, he felt at ease, a feeling he hadn't felt in many years, he felt at home.

Ramirez stood up just after the warden and the guard had left the room. He twisted his head, his neck crackling lightly "Well, it's time."

Na T'hel looked at him, completely stunned and confused "What do you mean?"

Ramirez stood up, the look on his silver eyes was calming, and yet terrifying "I haven't been completely honest with you, Na T'hel; you're not the first dragon I have met. Two years before I left my hometown, I met a dragon. But that's a story that can wait for now, we need to get out of here. It may be inappropriate, but the only way out, is through magic."

Na T'hel looked curiously at Ramirez as he puts his hand on of the enchanted chains around Na T'hels front legs. He closed his eyes as the shackles started to rumble quietly, and suddenly burst, breaking the rings, "I'm not new to either magic or dragons, but my knowledge is limited, I can tell you more at some other point. Na T'hel, we're escaping."
