This is a short story about a male fox and a male husky, about their love and about the special promise, that none of us can keep.

This is also a backward story.

You are starting from the end, and every part of text (separated by the stars) is taking you back in time. Don't ask why, I had an idea like that.

Big big thanks to MTT3 for correcting my mistkes ^.=.^

*****************************************

  • "Forever..." - John whispered and touched the cold stone, like he had been doing every evening for the past three years. He closed his eyes and sighed, feeling a tear running down on his cheek.

***************************************** When Mike woke up in a wrecked car, the first thing he saw was a photography of his beloved mate, still attached to the broken rear mirror. Everything else was blurred. He saw many lights flashing around and heard a distant shouts, but he no longer cared about it.

He tried to move his paw, to reach the picture and touch his lovely fox for the last time, but he couldn't feel his own body. He felt no pain nor cold, just a deep sorrow in his heart. He knew he just broke the promise made many years ago.

  • "John..." - he whispered, drawing his last breath. He was thinking only about his love, when the darkness surrounded him.

***************************************** - "Hi boss," - Mike answered the phone - "any news?"

  • "Yes. Where are you?"

  • "Still on my way to the factory." - he replied and sighed - "There is a little traffic jam, but I'm driving as fast as I can."

  • "Good. The faster you get there, the sooner they will resume production. I talked with the shift manager, he said that the alarm lamp is glowing, but the operator panel is completely blank."

  • "So they changed the program, after all." - Mike chuckled - "I warned them, do not touch the PLC, but they never listen."

  • "They don't care about it. It is our machine so they blame us. You must fix it before midnight, or they will charge us..."

  • "Don't worry, boss." - he said with confidence - "I will fix it in no time... if I ever get there... Come on! Move your lazy ass!"

  • "What is all that honking about? Don't tell me you broke your car."

  • "Some big truck is blocking my way," - Mike sighed and shook his head - "driving slower than a bike."

    • "Then why don't you pass him? You have the fastest car in our company... well except of mine."
  • "The road is quite narrow and it's dark..." - he paused, thinking for a moment - "but I will try. I will call you later."

***************************************** - "Who was that, hun?" - John walked out of kitchen, wearing his favourite blue apron - "Phone call from your working place again?"

  • "Yes." - Mike nodded, changing his shirt - "I need to go to the factory. They broke something again."

  • "What? Now?" - the fox asked and lowered his head - "But it's 8 pm... food is almost ready and we planned to watch a movie."

  • "You know my boss..." - he sighed, slowly dressing up - "I have to go."

  • "You need to change your job." - John shook his head, feeling sad and disappointed.

  • "Don't worry, my sweetie." - Mike smiled and gently lifted John's head, rubbing his chin - "I will be back before midnight. I promise."

  • "I will keep the food warm..." - the fox sighed again and touched Mike's nose with his snout - "Just drive carefully, it's getting dark outside."

    • "I will." - he replied, looking into his mate's eyes and feeling a strong warmth in his heart - "I love you."
  • "I love you too." - said John, giving his beloved husky a short kiss - "Forever."

  • "Forever." - Mike replied and walked outside.

***************************************** - "Should I bring a fire extinguisher?" - John chuckled, observing Mike's struggle to light up a candle.

  • "Those matches are wet." - the blue-eyed husky sighed and walked to the kitchen. When he came back, the room light was turned off and the table was illuminated by three other candles.

  • "Surprise!" - John shouted, hiding a Zippo in his pocket.

  • "You soaked the matches just to do this?" - Mike tilted his head.

  • "Yes." - the fox nodded, smiling widely.

  • "Oh you." - he chuckled and embraced his mate - "You always find a way to surprise me, even during our long planned dinner."

  • "Anything to make you smile." - John replied, hugging gently his lover - "Just put that candle away, or we will really need an extinguisher."

  • "Oh yes, we don't want it to drip all over the floor." - Mike giggled, putting the candle on a small holder. Then he embraced his mate again, this time much stronger.

    • "Happy anniversary, my dear." - John said cheerfully, hugging his head to Mike's neck - "I love you so much."
  • "I love you too, John." - the husky whispered, feeling strong warmth emanating from his mate - "Four years together... You can't imagine how happy I am to be with you, my fluffy fox."

  • "Oh I think I can." - the fox moved his head back to look into his lovers eyes - "And you are more fluffy than me."

  • "Fluff contest again?" - Mike chuckled, slowly running his paw over the John's back and feeling his fur moving between his fingers - "Bed is ready..."

  • "Not now, cake is waiting." - John giggled and gently pushed his mate away - "I'm hungry and we have the entire night."

  • "A very long night." - the husky whispered and touched John's nose with his nose - "Just with you, my love... forever."

  • "Forever with you, Mike." - the fox closed his eyes and slightly opened his mouth, waiting for a kiss.

***************************************** - "You were right, it was worth to wait." - John said and leaned his head on Mike's shoulder. They were sitting on a small bench near the beach, observing the sunset above the sea.

  • "I love those sunsets." - replied the husky. He took a deep breath, feeling a little nervous.

    • "And I love you." - the fox said happily, watching the red reflections on the sea surface, as the sun was slowly hiding below the horizon.
    • "Oh yes, about that..." - Mike sighed, getting more stressed - "I need to talk with you."
    • "I'm listening." - John turned toward his companion, ignoring the scenery.
    • "We are meeting for some time already..." - the husky blushed, not sure how to say it - "we are even sleeping together and it feels incredible, but..."
    • "But you want to stop it?" - John sighed and lowered his head.
    • "What? No!" - Mike protested and took John's hands into his paws - "I want to be with you, John...to live with you every day and every night... forever."
    • "Really?" - the fox smiled gently - "I thought..."
    • "I just want to ask..." - he paused, taking a deep breath to gather all of his courage - "Do you want to be my mate?"

John gasped, but he was not very surprised. He was expecting to hear this question sooner or later, and he already knew the answer. He looked at his lover and smiled, seeing the red light of the sun reflecting in his blue eyes.

  • "I do." - he nodded and touched Mike's nose with his nose - "I want to be with you so badly, my sweet husky, as your lover and as your mate."

    • "Oh John..." - the husky moaned with joy, feeling a strong warmth in his heart - "I love you so much."
    • "I love you too." - the fox replied and kissed his new mate. They had been kissing many times in the past months, but this kiss was much longer and more passionate than usual. This time it was not serving to satisfy their basic needs, but to seal their bond as mates, giving them that special feeling of being loved, and bringing a new hope for their future.
    • "Just promise me one thing." - John whispered after a kiss - "Promise that you will never leave me, I'm so afraid to be alone..."
    • "Don't worry, my love." - Mike replied, holding his mate's paws - "Whatever will happen, I will stay forever with you. I promise."
