#3 of Furry and Proud

Study date

School was finally over and I couldn't wait to get home. I packed my stuff up from my locker and went outside. I didn't have a lot of homework to do. It was a good thing I didn't, especially with Sam coming over. I'm not saying that she distracts me, but I know she wants us to have some alone time. As I was walking to my bus I met up with Jack and Ryan.

"Hey guys." I said. "What are your afternoons looking like?"

"I'm going to work on my idea for the talent show." Said Ryan.

"I have tons of work and a test tomorrow." Said Jack with agony. Then he smiled at us and said. "Any chance you guys would be willing to help me out?"

"Don't even try it Jack." I said.

"Eddy is right Jack." Said Ryan. "Eventually we won't be around to help you out when things get tough. Sometimes you just have to ignore your urge to quit and..."

"Alright, I get it." Said Jack. "Please save me the lecture."

"Well, while you guys are doing that, I'll be with Sam." I said.

"Man, I wish I had a girl like that." Said Jack.

"Don't you already have a girlfriend Jack?" Said Ryan.

"Oh yeah, Amber. Thanks for reminding me Ryan." Said Jack.

I laughed and said. "I'm telling you Jack, one of these girls is going to mess you up man."

"Hey, players gotta play." Said Jack trying to act all smooth. They started walking to the bus, but I didn't follow them.

"Hey, you coming on the bus?" Asked Jack.

"No, I'm walking home with Sam." I said.

They turned around and kept walking. I waited for Sam to come outside for a while. I was just sitting on the ground all alone. Then I see this group of humans walk out the front door. I could her them talking about some teacher, but I pretended that I couldn't. One of them was drinking this soda can, and when he was done with it, he threw it on the ground. I got a little annoyed by that. I really hate it when people litter. I mean, we all live on this planet. It wouldn't hurt to keep it clean. I waited for the group to leave. Then I got up, picked up the can and threw it out.

"Dude, are you picking up human garbage?" Someone said behind me.

I turned around and looked at this squirrel.

"Someone has to do it." I said.

"Man, those humans are making you soft." He said with a laugh. Then he walked away.

I just ignored the guy. Then I heard footsteps behind me. It was Sam.

"Hey." She said. "Ready to go?"

"Where have you been?" I asked.

"I was just talking to my teacher, that's all."

We started walking.

"What were you talking to your teacher for?" I said. "You got in trouble again?"

"No, I didn't do nothin'. I was just talking to him about a test grade." She said.

"What did you get?"

"I got a C."

"That's okay."

"No it's not." She said. "I'm a B student. You know that."

"Well, what did you ask him?" I said.

"I asked him why I got a B, he said that I didn't right complete sentences. Then, I asked him if I could do extra credit and he just said 'no' in the ruddiest way."

"I'm sure there is something you can do." I said to cheer her up.

"Thanks Eddy." She said. "But you don't know this guy. It's like he's out to get me or something."

"Oh come on now." I said with a little laughter.

"I'm serious." She said.

We soon crossed on to my street. We were only a little ways to my house. As we were walking, we saw this little girl outside of this store. When she saw us, she got really excited and said. "Doggy!"

She ran to Sam. Sam kneeled down and said. "Hello there. What's your name?"

Sam liked little kids. I guess in a way, she still was a kid.

"My name is Abby." Said the little girl. I have to admit, she was adorable.

"Can I have a hug?" Said the little girl with a smile.

"Of course you can." Said Sam.

They hugged, but their moment was interrupted when we heard this scream. "Abby! Let go of her!"

I looked up to see who it was. From the look on this woman's scared face, it was probably Abby's mom. Abby got a little scared and let go of Sam. The mother picked Abby up and said. "Oh my gosh. Abby are you okay?"

"What's your problem?" Said Sam. "I only hugged her."

"You stay away from my daughter, you mutt." Said the mother.

Sam got real ticked off. "What did you call me?!" She yelled.

I pulled her back on her shoulder and said. "Calm down Sam. It's just not worth it."

"Someone should really put you on a Leash." Said the mother. That comment got Sam and me real mad.

"Well, if this town lets you be unleashed, then I really don't see why she is a problem." I said while pointing to Sam. That made Sam smile.

The mother had this offended look on her face. Then turned around and walked away. As she was walking, we saw Abby's sad face.

"Bye bye doggy." Said Abby. Sam waved goodbye. Then she began to growl and ball up her fist.

"Rrrrr." She said. "I really hate people like that."

"I know Sam." I said.

"I mean, like did I do something wrong there? All I did was hug her."

"Sam, you did nothing wrong. It's the mother's fault. Not yours."

"I know, but seriously. I did nothing wrong, then all of a sudden I'm the bad guy."

I walked in front of Sam, put my hands on her shoulders and said. "Listen to me Sam. We both know that this world we live in isn't perfect, but it's the only world we got. And as long as we stay together, we can survive anything. I promise you that."

Sam's anger seemed to disappear.

"You promise?" She said.

"I promise." I answered back. Then she hugged me.

Soon, we were in front of my house.

"Your parents home?" Asked Sam.

"No, they won't be home til' five." I answered.

I unlocked the door and we both walked in. Sam took off her backpack and put it on the floor.

"Can I ask you a question?" She said.

"Go ahead." I said.

She then walked right up to me and said. "How do you always say things that make me feel better?"

I smiled. Then I wrapped my arm around her waist and said. "I guess I have a way with words."

I put my bag on the floor. Sam came even closer, but I kissed her first this time. Sam then guided me backwards and we both fell on the couch. We both laughed. Then we went right back to what we were doing. It was pure magic. But as Sam was slowly taking off my shirt, we heard footsteps outside. We both panicked.

"Who is that?" Whispered Sam.

I looked around the living and then saw my mom's purse on the counter.

"Dang it." I said. "It's my mom."

We both got up off the couch. I was putting my shirt back on and Sam was trying to fix herself up.

"Sit on the chair." I whispered to Sam.

Sam ran to my dad's chair while I grabbed the remote and turned on the TV. Then my mom opened the door and came in.

"Oh, hey mom." I said with innocence.

"Hey baby." Said my mom. "I know I'm not supposed to be here, but I forgot my purse and..." She stopped and looked at Sam.

"Oh, hello Sam." Said my mom.

"Hi Mrs. Crawford." Said Sam trying to play it cool.

"Well I didn't know you had company. Is anyone else coming over?"

"No." I said with caution. "Just me and Sam."

My mom smiled and said. "Interesting."

"We're studying for a test." I said.

"Oh really. Then why aren't any books out?"

I looked at our bags on the other side of the room. I started to get real worried. If my mom found out that we were just hitting it off, she would go crazy.

"We decided to watch a little TV first to calm down." Said Sam. Wow, why didn't I think of that?

"Alright then." Said my mom. She grabbed all of her stuff and said. "I'll see you later then." She took her bag and went to the door. She then stopped, turned around and looked at me. "Behave." She said. Then she left.

As soon as that door closed, me and Sam both had a sigh of relief. I got up and said, in a smooth way. "So, where were we?"

"I'm hungry." Said Sam. She then got up and went to the kitchen.

"Really?" I said with disbelief.

"I just want a little snack, that's all."

I sat down on my dad's chair and started watching TV. I'll admit it, I was attracted to Sam, but we are both smart enough to not have sex. Although, I can't help to think about it sometimes. I mean come on, who doesn't theses days.

I looked at Sam as she was going through the kitchen. She was in the cabinets.

"Sugar free cookies?" Said Sam.

"Yea, they're not that bad." I said. "But don't eat them."

Sam put her hand on her hip and said. "Why not?"

"Because they're mine."

"Oh really."

Sam began to open the bag of cookies.

"Come on Sam." I said. "Those are my favorite cookies."

Sam took out one cookie and ate it. Then I got up out of dad's chair and walked to her in the kitchen.

"Can I have one?" I said.

"Nope." She answered back.

"Why not?"

"Because they're mine." Said Sam with a smile on her face.

Then I began to notice that her tail was wagging. That usually means that she is playing around. I reached for the bag of cookies in Sam's hands, but Sam jumped back so I couldn't reach. She then ate another cookie in front of my face.

"Don't make me chase you." I said.

"Why not?" Said Sam "You ain't gonna catch me." She said with a smile.

"Oh really." I said.

I waited for a few seconds. Then I tried to grab the bag. Sam dodged me again and ran to the living room. I chased after her. We probably ran around downstairs for a good five minutes. Then when she ran in the kitchen again, I slipped on a rug and fell on my butt. Sam started laughing. I got right back on my feet and saw Sam run upstairs.

"Oh, I got you now." I said while running after her.

Sam ran to the top of the stairs and to my room.

"Whoa." She said. "You need to clean your room."

I noticed that she wasn't paying attention and a grabbed her from behind.

"Can I have a cookie now?" I said.

Sam tried to get out, but I wouldn't let her. Then she pushed me backwards and made us both fall on my bed. Sam probably didn't feel a thing, because she fell right on top of me. Sam then got up with the bag of cookies still in her hand.

"Here you go." Said Sam as she tossed the bag on my stomach. I didn't take it though. Sam got me a little tired and I didn't feel like sweating just for a bag of cookies. I looked up at Sam. She was looking at some of the pictures I had on my desk. She picked up one of the pictures and asked. "Where was this?"

I ate a cookie and looked at the picture.

"That's me when I was in New York." I said.

"Why did you move again?"

I laid back down and said. "My parents said that they wanted to find a safer place to live."

"New York isn't safe?"

"No, it's fine." I said. "It's just...not a place for a furry."

"Why not?" Asked Sam.

I was going to eat another cookie, but then I stopped and thought about that question. I finally just said. "I don't know."

Sam then sat down next to me. I looked at her face. She looked sad. I couldn't really tell why. I sat up straight and came close to her. She then looked at my guitar.

"Eddy." She said.

"Yes." I said.

"Can you play for me?"

"Sure." I said.

I grabbed my guitar and sat back down. I was going to ask her what I should play, but then, all of a sudden, she began to sing.

"To many times I felt this pain."

I began to just play chords. One clean stroke after each note she stopped with.

"It hurts so much that it drives me insane.

But people keep on hurting me. Taking all the things that belong to me.

And what ever I lose, they seem to gain."

The song was beautiful. I really started to feel the rhythm.

"But I don't know how this came to be.

But no matter what, the blame is on me.

And with every tear I shed. And all the times I cry myself to bed.

It just don't make any sense to me.

But people keep on...hating me, hurting me, killing me.

And they keep on...doubting me, blaming me, changing me.

But I say...I will try, I will fight, I won't die, I will survive."

She paused for a moment, and then she sang.

"Oh, cause I'm furry and proud."

Then I started wailing on my guitar. Playing chord after chord. My fingers started to burn. But then Sam said. "Shhhh."

I stopped playing and noticed that she was looking out my window. I went to go see what she was looking at, but before I could see, she barked really loud out the window. I was wondering why she did that, until I heard a crash outside. Sam began to laugh. I looked out the window and saw the same guy that crashed his bike this morning. Next thing I know, Sam and me are both on the floor laughing. Man, she was really something special.
