A spartan proves the phrase "Spartans never die, their just missing in action."

Disclaimer: this is a mostly clean work of art based in the universe of halo 4, the infinity spartan 4 program, and is in no way owned by me, in any way.

It's a crappy fanfic based on a custom spartan ops mission I made up, on an iPhone. Please don't criticize, I don't have the materials or the brainpower to organize a normal story on this device.

In artistic viewpoint, I was trying to capture the mindset of the character. The characteristics of what they would do, detachment from their situation, and overall survival within a forerunner cave. It's a light touch of an emotional violent thrill ride.

I hope you all enjoy!

Team Mesa and aurora touch down in a snowy blizzard type area, told to infiltrate a covenant foothold on requiem. They recently put up a good line of defense with AA guns and plenty of wraiths and banshee coverage. We are dropped with sniper rifles and rocket launchers on our backs and battle riffles and DMRs for our main weapon. The mission is done carefully and efficiently as both teams flank either right or left and cut inwards to the structure.

After a good hour of firing and swapping guns for covenant guns, and taking a good ammount of cover, both teams make it to the entry floor of the structure, near the door that leads inside. Behind them is a mess of covenant corpses both under and over debris of vehicles that overloaded or exploded. The mission would hopefully be over for this overkill of a team.

We enter carefully, having two people with promethian vision spotting out corners for any stealthed elites. It's mostly dead until we get to a big room with a bridge, where we easily take out the 6 elites and about a dozen grunts.

We press forward and find a covenant data siphon hooked up to the console and are told to take a look. Apparently the data is of great value to the infinity and we are told to grab the covenant data siphon once it's full. Which was only a matter of 30 minutes since they were already close.

I myself take point as a regen field ability, holding a needler with a carbine on my back. Other Spartans already grabbed the greater weapons, such as the fuelrod cannons and beam rifles. I liked the needler anyways though.

As we leave however, there is a warning for covenant cruisers swarming us. We rush out and look to the sky as we see a dense swarm of banshees and phantoms. It hits all of us at the same moment, that there is a chance we won't be home for a long time.

We set up a defense with turrets and proper placement of forces, but it proves to be too hard of an attack force. Banshees rip up the skies and ground troops line the building like we are a band at a concert. The infinity drops us more guns in drop pods and we make good use of the lasers and rockets at hand. We decided to use the rockets on the ground and lasers for the air, naturally.

However Mesa team loses two people at the lower reaches and my team loses a couple as well. 3 people dead before going through half the forces. The Mesa team leader has the data and a laser on top with a few of us from aurora company. A total of 3 of us on top. The two remaining below try to make it up, but some jackals line the ridge with snipers and take them out.

Everything happened so fast and just fell apart. We hear sangheili shouts and marching, but it seems to fade. I look out from cover and confirm the snipers are still there, but there are fewer. We see the nose of a cruiser overhead and look back at it to see it's supercharged glossing laser charging.

The last few jackals leave and rush off as fast as they can... We knew what was next.

"Get inside the structure! NOW!" The Mesa team leader shouts before we all get up and dart to the entrance. But right as we approach, the door shuts an locks, and a forerunner portal opens, knights step forth from the black swirling mass and begin firing with incineration cannons and scattershots.

"DON'T STOP!" We barely manage to dodge the cannon fire and the scattershots bring down our shields with the few blasts they fire. The Mesa team leader charges a shot and takes one out, my fellow aurora team member does the same. I however, missed my shot with their warp to the side and hit the mountain in the distance.

Now within 20 feet, our stamina reaches its end, but we had to push forth. The last knight hits my companions with an incineration shot as we enter.

We come through and I see the two of them lifeless on the ground. It was dark. "Please. Get up... Come on..." My voice echoes in my own helmet. The portal closes and leaves me wondering what comes next. I grab the data core and attach it to my waist on my back. I check my laser ammo and see that it's depleted.

The two were dead. Half of their bodies incinerated at the torso. I stay kneeling for a moment and mourn, letting a bit of my emotions free as I sniffle and cry in my own helmet. My fellow aurora team member that almost made it was the one who I liked the most. Spartan H34C, David. A blue fox with kind eyes and a big heart. We talked about a date yesterday.

I shake my head and grab their video chips from their helmets and check their laser ammo. They were out too. I'm left with one clip of carbine and the Mesa leader's special camo pistol with 2 clips worth of ammo. I look around at the darkness and my helmet seems to be warning me of a lack of oxygen. My suit could recycle mine for about 5 days if I stayed inactive. But I had to move.

I stand up from the corpses and turn on my helmet lights, looking at my surroundings and then out over a ledge to see hundreds of powered down knights. I shut off my light and crouch down on one knee "shit..." I whisper to myself and build up my courage. One of them was bad news for a single spartan. I'm no exception!

I look over to David's back and grab his promethian vision pack and replace my regen field. It would help me see without the flashlights and would be a familiar signal to their own, so I wouldn't raise an alert.

I hop down from the ledge and turn on my promethian vision. I take it slow and walk between all of them, stepping on the hard floor beneath me. This situation was terrifying. If one woke up then I'd alert all of them. Even though two alone could kill me, I don't doubt the need to keep this place a secret.

I reach the end of the room and walk into a large hallway with some blue lights lining some pillars, but it was still dark. I hear something behind me in the room and see a few of the knights rise up and move up onto the platform. They seem to be inspecting my fallen comrades. I hide around an edge in the hallway and my radar detects a promethian vision pulse.

"Fuck!" I watch my radar fill with red dots in the room. I dash off down the hall and can hear them warping on behind me. I keep running, a few even shoot their various guns at me, which hit my shields and slow me down from the shield trying to grip my armor with the field. I get to a brighter room and stop, looking back down the hallway.

I tremble and tear up in the eyes. I blink to get rid of the tears as I aim. I turn around and keep running into the circle area, determined to find a way out. I get to a console and see a huge button on a holographic interface, and slap my hand on it. I turn to see the knights running behind me, but the platform I'm on starts to move, going sideways at a quick pace. They try to warp behind me but fall over the pit and warp back onto the ledge.

I fall to my knees and breathe painfully into my helmet, my oxygen levels were dwindling with my breathing. I slow it down on purpose and it soon catches up, letting me get a decent pace of breath and allowing me a sigh to fill my lungs properly.

I stand back up and look around, I can only see more hallways like before. I hit the button again and walk off to explore some more. Down the similar hallway I see another set of knights and upon further inspection, I see crawlers on the walls, I make a my way back to the platform and start it back up. I sit at the base of the panel and watch the hallways go by. There had to be a way out along this path somewhere.

The journey goes on for about 3 hours, which meant it would be dark outside. I was starting to get tired, and sitting around wasn't helping. But just as I think of taking a nap, the hallways stop and I'm floating out into an abyss. I move near the edge and turn on my promethian vision, watching as a ledge approaches with the shape of this platform delved into it. It makes its landing after my promethian vision shuts off and I stand there in pitch black for a moment while I wait to recharge it. But as it fills back up, lights shimmer down and reveal a large empty hall.

I step forward and go about 100 yards in before I hear the lift take off and leave me behind. This location was much better than before, so I had no wishes to go back.

Another hundred yards and I can hear my own breath tremble. I hold up the pistol for only a while longer, before deciding its mostly safe right now.

Walking goes on for about an hour, and I was getting tired. My training kept me strong in these times however, and I knew I had to push on. I'm a spartan 4 after all!

Suddenly, I hear noises coming from the walls, I raise my pistol and look to the grooves. A couple crawlers pop out and start firing on my position. I don't hesitate to aim for the glowing part of their heads, which sends an explosive shock through them and makes them explode into an orange techno-biological mess.

Just as the firefight starts, scenery pops from the floor and unfolds into various cover, some panels, and plenty of spires for crawlers to use. I make good use of all this cover, and barely scrape by on multiple occasions with my shields down and taking some shots to my armor, which was going to take some time to damage.

Before long though, knights spring up and I lead them so I can take them on one at a time. I had to use some of the crawler weapons, but I managed to take one down with an incineration cannon.

I rush out of cover and my shields take a good chunk of damage before they break and I'm left to take some bullets to my armor. I move into a slide behind the new cover and grab the incineration cannon from the pile of silvery shards.

Turning on the promethian vision, I look around, then behind me. A knight was right at my back! I turn while laying down and fire at him. I was honestly a bit too close, and one of the bouncing cluster shots hits my chest piece and seems to eat at the metal. I knew how this worked. It would eat through to my fight suit and then incinerate me! I hit the emergency latches on my chest piece and it pops off, and predictably turns into a red ashen pile and floats off.

My torso was now exposed, leaving me pretty much bare in my skin tight suit. But I had an idea. I grab the remains of the robots I just killed and see some metal straps attached to the bits of armor! I grab the light rifle from the second knight and quickly use the shots to weld the pieces together one at a time. I use my promethian vision to check my surroundings, it was mostly crawlers at this point.

However making armor out of these parts was going to be tough. And there wasn't much left over from the defeated enemies.

I move from cover to cover, grabbing bits and pieces to weld, more ammo for the light rifle, and taking time to fire at more enemies as I continue to make my way down the hall.

Within a few hours I have a passable vest made of recycled armor. It looked like a large scale mail armor if it were made out of large claws, but it was silver and had an orange sheen on some bits from their tech blood.

I go on like this, patching up my new armor and adding more to it until I have a scale mail tunic of it held by bands of metal rings around my torso. It was patched up all around me, I didn't plan on taking it off until I was safe, but it was weak in some places and I am forced to stop and repair it.

This goes on for about a day, my will was breaking down and I was losing track of time. My oxygen levels were reaching a critical level and the flow of enemies only seemed to intensify. I was losing hope of ever getting out of here.

Until I reach a doorway at the end of the hall. It was pretty small, but it was open.

Taking my time, I make sure the area is safe before advancing to the oddly shaped door. I step through and the door closes immediately after me. I look back at the door and back to the new corridor. Jets of air seep through and the room pressurizes with an outside source. My helmet collects this new air and throws out the older air. Hope was renewed! But I was still lost.

Now in silence, I get some time to think. This architecture was like that of requiem. So I was either still on requiem or somewhere completely new. It wasn't like the halo structures, or the arc structure that has little recorded data.

My head felt light, and my body felt heavy from all this time walking and fighting. I had oxygen now, I could catch some sleep if I hid in one of the grooves. That sounded like such a good idea right now. Besides, I could react better with some sleep.

I make my way over to the wall and look through the pattern on the walls. Finding a nice spot, I climb in and sit against the wall. It was a close range entry so I have my scatter shot in my hands ready to fire if I wake up to any unexpected guests. I doze off with no record of time before I fell asleep, or really any goal for how much sleep I wanted.

In the morning however, I awaken to the sound of static in my radio. I open my eyes and recognize slight English dialect through the fuzz. My eyes widen as I stumble to get up and run back out into the hall. I look around for any openings, but I just start running in the direction that I was going before. I put my hand on my helmet for the radio, and shout into the mic. "UNSC infinity do you copy?! This is spartan J15 of Aurora company! I have the data and need evac!" I move my hand back down as I run, and can hear the static getting louder.

My steps echo in the hall as I run on through. The noise of my makeshift armor shifting as I run making another level of noise that was constant. "UNSC infinity do you copy?! This is spartan J15 of Aurora company! Respond!"

The lights in the hallway were looking a bit brighter, and all the shadows were darker as well. But for all I saw, I could only comprehend the basic shape of the hall, and focusing on the sound I heard in my headset. "UNSC infinity do you copy?!" My voice breaks and tears fill my eyes as I shout. "This is spartan J15 of Aurora company! Come in infinity!"

A blue light catches my eye and I stop to lift my light rifle. All the noise in the hall stopped. Frozen, I look to the bright blue light coming from the dark notches in the wall. The message plays again, and the signal is strong, but still has too much static to make out.

The blue light moves out and seems to float closer, and as it hits the light, I see that it's a sentinel, a harmless repair bot on most forerunner installations. Harmless to humans that is. I however, keep my weapon raised and stare at it as it approaches.

"Stay back!" I shout. It doesn't stop, but moves around me in a circle. It moves lower and a red light blinks next to the blue one. In my headset I hear the best repeat of the transmission, and it seemed to be cleared up much better.

"This ..is....f... Ity.... A-....sp..... Ert..."

The rest was the same. But it was still mostly gibberish. But still. This sentinel was my best bet. "Can you help me? I need to get back to my ship." The sentinel floats off down the hall and I walk after it. This was the craziest thing I could think of doing. Maybe I didn't get enough sleep?

Still, this was my best bet. Even if the next few hours were filled with lots of walking. But the sentinel was opening doors and creating paths into other halls, even leading me up, which often meant out!

The sentinel continues on and turns a corner much like a couple before, and what I see next was amazing. A covenant phantom landed in here. But all the covenant were dead around it. The sentinel flies over quickly and zaps a few corpses. I smile a bit at the flying machine, it was kinda cute in a morbid sort of way.

As I approach I see that it's actually cleaning up some of the blood from the grunts and elites. It looked like that had a camp going, but were ambushed by the sentinel beams and all taken out. It had to have been a swarm of them.

Next order of business was to find some weapons. My scatter shot had its clip, but nothing more. And the light rifle had some extra for itself, but I didn't like how it functioned.

I found myself a carbine and some fuel rod guns, and plenty of ammo to fill up the holsters on the guns and on my armor.

Next, I move into the phantom and look around for the controls. Covenant controls were tough for a single person but flying out was a much better idea than walking.

Setting the carbine next to the driver panel, I start it up and look at all the holographic monitors. If my training taught me right, then this thing could fly!

Turning some items and starting the engine, I take it slow and lift it from the ground, and move it forward down the long empty hall ahead. The floor seems to drop away into a huge pit, but I kind of had the hang of this now!

Time was again, not an object as I fly through tunnels and take every opportunity to go up and out. Soon though, I hear covenant chatter and I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I speed up and stare into it. It looked blue!

Before I can get there though, I can see some wraiths ahead. I might be able to get past if I go fast enough! But as I approach, I see a couple are anti air wraiths. And they seem to be going somewhere. I hear shouting in sangheili and hear the wraiths shooting under me. The bullets were aimed at me! This ship must have been reported as lost and the crew dead. Which meant I wasn't covenant to them. I didn't think about that. "Shit..."

I turn down another hall and the homing bullets hit the edge. The left turn was a bit sharp for my speed, and I lost the right flap that lowers for troops. I didn't know how to close it anyways. But the impact rattled me and I struggle to stay at the controls.

The ship levels out and I curse myself for having done that. I was so close! But I could have died right there. It doesn't take long, but I reach the end of this hall and there is only a small door that this ship would most assuredly never fit through. I slow the ship down and land it once again. I pick up the carbine on my way out, and make my way into the door. I was still closer to the surface than before. So this was still progress. But if the covenant were here, then they have a chance at the data I have!

My only wild card now was the fact that I was still heavily unknown. So I walk through the door and don't look back. The door closes and I keep jogging my way into the new hall.

About 20 minutes in, I see that it becomes a ramp that goes up, and that was good enough news for me! I run a bit faster now, having to turn left, go up another huge ramp, left again, and going up a squared spiral hall with a window the floor all the way up! Looking up, I can see light. I smile to myself and keep running. The sound of wind rushing by the entrance was getting louder.

As I reach the top I point my carbine around and look out over the grassy hill. There was a large spire over me, casting a shadow over the valley. I hit the button on my helmet and grin "UNSC infinity. This is spartan J15 of Aurora company. I have the data core. I need a pelican ASAP." There is silence for a moment but I hear the sound of one of the communication guys respond. "Aurora? How many made it out?"

I remember David and the Mesa team leader, dead at the bottom of that hellhole. "Sorry it's just me." Commander Palmer comes over the radio this time "glad to hear you made it. We are sending a bird to your location right now. We can't wait to see you home!"

I sigh and close my eyes. I look down to the mess of armor and notice that my leg armor was falling apart as well. My right shoulder pad was gone, and my helmet had plenty of scratches.

The happy moment was quickly soured as I hear the sound of knights teleporting in. My breathing picks up and I dash forward. I head to the steepest part of the hill and jump down the rocky surface. I slide down and cringe as my armor takes more of a beating. I'm still holding the carbine with a fuelrod on my back.

I shout into the mic as I slide "knights! I need support!" More appear at the bottom of the hill. I swap guns and stick the carbine to my back. I fire the fuelrod down below and fill my landing area with the green explosions. Dirt flies everywhere and as I land, so does the dirt.

"Sending pods. Hang in there!" The sound of drop pods thudding in the ground nearby never sounded so great. My HUD lights them up as to what they are. Rockets, snipers, battle rifles, grenades, and a sticky detonator.

I go for the battle rifle and swap it for my carbine, and reload my fuel rod. This spot was reasonably defensible, with rocks in the area, grass, and dirt making some hills around my own hill.
