#9 of Kiss of Destiny

Mittens woke feeling rather dirty and grungy.

She shook her canine head, trying to clear the fog from her eyes. Her ears flopped against the sides of her head as she shook vigorously.

Her muzzle opened wide in a big yawn as she blinked. Mittens turned her head to look at herself, trying to figure out why she felt so unclean.

Her eyes alit on the massive patch of matted and sticky fur on her hind legs. Her face creased slightly as she tried to figure out where that had come from, then she spotted a similar splotch on the fluffy white canine sleeping next to her.

It all came back to her in a rush of memories and sensations. She and Bolt had mated!

Her muzzle creased with a wide grin that quickly vanished as she tried unsuccessfully to speak. Her throat remained irritatingly silent.

She frowned. She had been sure that this would be the final thing that would have done it for her, the thing that would have made Bolt finally fall head over paws in love with her and given her her voice back.

Mittens let out a long, sad sigh as she stood up on trembling legs. They had given out from under her last night when the sensations of Bolt fucking her brains out had knocked them senseless.

Her tongue lolled out of her mouth as she panted, suddenly thirsty. She spotted the bowl of water in the kitchen that Penny had set aside specifically for her and she went for it. Her head dipped and she eagerly slurped up a good half of the bowl.

Feeling refreshed, she glanced at the clock on the oven. Shortly after six in the morning.

Mittens grumbled, knowing full well that her humans weren't going to get up until the clock read at least nine.

She jumped through the doggy door onto the porch, shivering in the cool, but not unpleasant air. It carried upon it the hint of winter, which was quickly approaching. September in Nebraska could be cold, but it was nothing like New York. There, the snows started appearing IN Spetember instead of in mid-October.

She heard the door open behind her and she couldn't help but turn her head to look at who had come out.

It was Penny.

Penny smiled at seeing the fluffy collie sitting on the steps.

"Heya, Jodie."

Mittens adopted a pleased facade and went over to Penny to nuzzle her hand, hoping that her person would be able to cheer her up without knowing.

Penny grinned and buried her hand in the thick fur on Mittens' neck and scratched.

Mittens couldn't help but wag her tail at the pleasuring attention.

The smile on her person's face slowly faded away. She sat next to Mittens and put her head on her knees and sighed.

"Where are you, Mittens?" she said aloud, possessing no knowledge that her missing cat was in fact right next to her.

Mittens whined softly, putting her head in Penny's lap.

"Mittens, wherever you are, Bolt misses you... We all miss you..."

To try to cheer Penny up, Mittens nuzzled her cheek like Bolt would have.

"I'm sorry, Jodie... My heart's not in it right now..."

Behind her, Mittens heard the doggy door open, but resisted the urge to look. It was Bolt, she knew it, and she had no desire to be anywhere near him at the moment. If all she was to him was a nice fuck, then there was no point in even trying.

Those thoughts were wiped instantly from her mind as Bolt laid down a nice slow lick on her tender nether regions and shot her a cheeky grin. She couldn't help but grin back.

For his credit, Bolt went over to Penny and set about the task of cheering her up. He nuzzled her face, licked her hand, and even ran inside to go get Mr. Carrot, but none of his ideas seemed to bring her out of her funk.

Eventually, Penny stood up and went inside without saying a word to either canine. Both of them looked after her well after she was gone, their worry about her seeming almost telepathic.

"Morning, Jodie," Bolt said finally, laying down at the top step and looking down the stairs at her.

She dipped her head in response, wagging her tail once.

"What say you and I go get Mittens and bring her home, eh? I can't stand to see her like this... It's just like after the studio fire... She hasn't said more than four consecutive words since Mittens disappeared." Bolt dipped his head, sighing sadly.

Mittens leaned up and nuzzled his cheek, bringing a small smile out of him.

Together, the two of them set off into the new day.

Mittens and Bolt returned home late that night, paws exhausted from all the walking and trotting they had done. Bolt groaned and literally collapsed into his soft bed, remembering to scoot over and make some room for her.

After she had gone and gotten some water from the kitchen, Mittens joined him in the bed. She laid her snout across Bolt's forelegs and sighed deeply.

"Jodie?"

Mittens flicked her eyes up to look Bolt right in the face.

"Thanks for being here right now... I don't think I could stand to be without someone by my side without Mittens here."

She held up her paw to approximately the right height for Rhino's ball. Bolt caught her point.

"Nah. Rhino's not a friend like Mittens. He's more of a fan than anything else. But he IS family, so I guess I should go tell him that the humans aren't going to be looking after tomorrow."

Mittens' ears perked right up. Her people were giving up so quickly?!

Fortunately, Bolt had just stood up and hadn't noticed her unusual reaction to his words. He trotted off to find Rhino and break the news to him.

Unwilling to follow him, Mittens stretched out on Bolt's bed and quickly fell asleep.
