The unsung hero pt. 1

Story by Acchan Escovar on SoFurry

This is a story about a genetically superior fox/wolf hybrid. His name is Acchan, he was made for projects that everyone else on the planet Estor couldn't do, even with the most intense training. But they didn't think it would go wrong.

I remember the first time I opened my eyes. The bright lights, the strangers looking down at me, and a mask pressed to my face. Of course, this is when I was born. Well, when I say born, I really mean being spat out on a chrome tray from a cloning device that was almost the size of a truck. When I awoke later, I remember a funny looking, small man and a tall, stern looking bigger-man in a suit. The Suitman was staring at me with wide eyes, and the Smallman was poking me and lifting me up to show the Suitman my "finer details". Of course, I had no idea what they were saying. It could have been where they would stick a rocket pack, it could be where they were going to cut me up first to make a stew. It didn't help I couldn't hear yet. Just poking and looking, and mouthed words.

A few weeks later was when I heard my first sounds. It was a low humming, soothing, coming from the machine I spoke of earlier. I wasn't in it, I was in a bed near it. I was looking around on my bed for more wondrous sounds to hear, and the Smallman came in. "Well, Acchan, it seems obvious you have developed your sense of hearing!" He scribbled it down on his clipboard. "According to the Colonel, you will have to learn how to speak now. And, by the way, my name is Lee."

It seems strange to me now why Lee was talking to me as an adult, I was barely a month old. Anyways, he picked me up and walked me to another room, down the hallway. I'd never been outside of the Birthing Room, and it was like being on an alien planet! We went into the big, wide room covered in chrome. There were similar units lined up on the wall, like hair machines at a hair salon. They had a wide dish on top, with hundreds of tiny probes connecting to one long tube. The outside was chrome, but the inside of the dish hummed neon blue. "Since you can hear now, Acchan, we will be teaching you speech with the most sophisticated teaching software on the planet. A few minutes hooked up to this dish here, and you will have gained the knowledge of 20 years of schooling." Lee smirked,"Then we meet up with the Colonel for PT."

He sat me down on the dish machine, and typed in a long sequence on the display. The dish came down, and the long tube went down my throat. In an instant, I was knocked out.

As I was unconscious, my dreams were filled with everything I would ever need to know. The machine taught me about division, measuring distance exactly with the eye, The downfall of the U.N., the uprising of the Forgotten Clan and the rest of the government fleeing from Earth. It talked about the history of Estor, the first colonization of the lands, the first Anthropomorphic experiments and the program that was made to be completed by me. IT told me of the dangers I will face and the losses I will need to sustain, but by then it taught me not to believe it.

I woke up later in a field. I stood up, and heard a voice on the intercom. "TEST SUBJECT 37, SURNAME:ACCHAN. REPORT TO CALL BOX FOR BRIEFING." I had no idea where the call box was, so I tried to walk to the door. I heard heavy footsteps behind me, and turned to see who I believe was the Colonel. "Now listen, animal, you have just disobeyed a direct order. That calls for punishment." I couldn't understand why I was in trouble, but he grabbed me by the scruff and took me to a room. "I knew you were a rotten one."

And he threw me into the room, closed the door, locked it. I heard beeping from a wall display outside the room, and a thick shield covered the door. Then a mist started to seep into the room. I began to cough, uncontrollably, and fell to the ground crying and begging the floor to stop hurting me. I fell asleep in a wonderful dream world, where I was lifted away and flew threw the air. I loved the sensation of flying, it was like bliss. But, like most things in my stolen childhood, it ended quickly, for I woke up in a bin, smelly, mushy, with flies everywhere. It became aware to me that I was crawling on top of my brothers and sisters.

And I was supposed to be dead, just like them.
