#16 of The Chronicles of James Travant

James stepped into the 2/6 Doghouse, preceded by his partner, and holding the hand of his human lover. Tanya herself looking quite apprehensive as she clutched a bag full of clothing, both clothes that would fit her, and a set in a distinctly larger size. "I don't know why you made me buy such a big bra." She hissed as she dropped her wallet into the bag and zipped it up. "Trust me, the Vets know these things." James replied, smiling at his friend Jules Carson, as the rather well endowed black Lab strolled past, giving them both a warm greeting. "See what I mean? We'll have to talk to Hargus first, and then you'll be starting your journey, which, in truth, is about two flights of steps and two weeks on a table." Chuckling, James stepped forward to guide Tanya through the maze of desks and Kaynines towards DeBasa's office. * * *

Outside the Doghouse... Timothy Craine glared at the complex that made up the home base for these abominations in his city. Today he was just on another recon mission for the Seared Palm, watching this 'Doghouse' closely to gain intelligence on the rotations of the guards at the gate where the Speciest gathering he was mingling with was demonstrating, as well as the movements of any Kaynines within the yard and building. "Security looks fairly light, they're simply putting cursory guards to keep the people from demonstrating on their front doorstep." He said into a cell phone he had to his ear. "Yes, we'll move as planned, we should have the materials in 3 weeks time..." * * * Tanya looked around, feeling almost intimidated by everyone around her, the feeling almost dominated her nervous excitement about what was to follow. "You'll have to introduce me to some others later. I'll be holding you to it." She looked around again squeezing his paw a little more tightly, "I can't believe that I'm scared about the thing I always wanted since I heard about Kaynines." Her voice was small and nervous. Where are we going exactly?" "Here." James replied, stopping in front of Captain DeBasa's door and knocking lightly. The inviting yip came through the door and James opened the door, pulling his love in gently as Ronso went off to associate with some of the other working dogs. "Well, here we are." The Malamute laughed, seeing the expression on Tanya's face. "You'll be happy to know that you have the same look of every Pup that's ever landed himself in front of my desk." He reached into a tray and pulled out a thin file with Tanya's name on it. "Miss Sonatte, before we begin, I need you to be fully aware that as a Kaynine, you're fully expected to pull your weight as an officer, as well as that of your chosen profession within the Doghouse. Similar to military philosophy of everyone a Rifleman first, in the Kaynine's, everyone's a trigger puller before they push pencils. If, after you pass the training regimen, you elect to be an officer, rather than a clerk, we'll put you through full training in EU law, and then pair you with Travant here for OTJ. If this is acceptable, please sign this release..." The Malamute pulled a sheet of paper out of the folder and slid it and a pen towards her. "Do great care to read before you sign miss, I myself must've signed my life away five times by now. And feel free to ask any questions of either of us." Tanya looked to James and gave a weak smile, she wasn't having second thoughts, but she wasn't fond of pain much. She read the paper and fiddled the pen between her fingers, knowing it'd be the one of the last times she did it with human fingers. She looked up to the Malamute, eyes cold and calculating, "I can live with this." She signed it blindly and stood up to take hold of James' paw in her own. "When will things get underway, and what do I have control with, in terms with my new identity." "That's one of the perks we never quite talk about." DeBasa smiled as he accepted the paper and pen back from her. James squeezed her palm. "We're essentially reborn and given a clean slate as a person, we can be whatever we want, new name, new home, new job, new car, new nationality..." "I'm Russian." DeBasa said with a grin. "Bullshit boss, you're about as American as I am." The Husky barked. "What matters is, as a Kaynine, you're a new person, and you get to choose who that person is. And it starts with this sheet." DeBasa pulled a second sheet from the file, sliding the first one in, and pressed it towards her. "Fill a name, a nationality, and your favorite Kaynine species." He whispered, pressing the pen into her palm. "We'll do the rest." Tanya looked at the sheet, taking the pen once again from him; she knew the nationality already, neatly cursing Scottish into the allotted space. "I'm not married to you yet, James. So, last name, will have to be different." She smiled up at him, until you get the balls and the will to do it." She winked and wrote the first name, Sonya, down but left the last name for when she came up with it. Her hand flowed over the area for a second before penning down Siberian Husky as her favorite dog breed. "Question, if I so choose, I can be partnered with Ronso, can I not?" She thought for a moment, holding her hand up as in a request to not answer for a moment and wrote in her last name as it came to her, Tanner. "Okay, had to have that down as it hit me. I'm listening, uh sir." "Hargus DeBasa, Captain DeBasa, Sir, or Boss works just fine." The Malamute chuckled as he took the sheet and tapped it into her folder before standing and handing it over to James. "And, as for Ronso, the pairing of a Kaynine to a second partner is a matter of acceptance between the Kaynine and said second partner." James tucked the folder under his arm. "Judging by how well you and Ronso cooperate as is, I think it's just a matter of growing the ears to learn his language, and you two will be peas in a pod." "And you call yourself British." The Captain chuckled. "Bollocks." James retorted, his voice suddenly shifting to a thick British accent. "Oi mate, bugger off while I take the lass down to 'er Vet." DeBasa laughed out loud before extending his paw to Tanya. "We look forward to seeing you soon, Miss Tanner." Tanya smiled, taking DeBasa's paw and giving it a light shake without a moment's hesitation. "Thank you. And as for you..." She turned back to James, poking him in the ribs. "I'll deal with you, later." She laughed as James led her out of the room. "I'm surprised, I'd have thought the starting process to all this would be more complicated than a John Hancock and a few questions of tastes." She rubbed her thumb along James' paw, suddenly growing more nervous. "Now comes the part I wasn't looking forward to." She gave a nervous chuckle. "Hope you'll be one of the faces I see when I first come around after all this." "Oh it ain't so bad...mostly." James replied, taking her file in his free paw as they began making their way towards the stairs. As they reached the first riser, James halted when a loud bark sounded from behind them. "Ah, that's right; she did want to meet you." James chuckled. "She?" Tanya asked as both turned around to face a Black Lab standing just a few inches shorter than James. "Officer Jules Carson, Miss..." The Lab began, extending her paw. "Sonya Tanner." James replied as Tanya took her paw. "A pleasure to meet you pup." She cheered as James turned Tanya back around and they all three began down the flights of steps. "You look nervous as a babe, it'll be fine, and if you've any questions that the males couldn't answer, I'll happily clue you in." She grinned at James as she finished her sentence, who gave an exasperated sigh in return. Tanya smiled, "I'd like that, I've a few questions already, but I'll ask them in two or so weeks. Why did you want to meet me? James, have you been talking about me?" She nudged him in the ribs with her elbow with a laugh. Jules gripped Tanya's arm gently and smiled to her. She complied, not feeling threatened, even as she shooed James away to let them know she was coming. She felt a little better about all this, at least she wasn't alone. She even had a friend already, and she already signed away, no way to turn back now. She sighed and smiled up to Jules, "Thanks. For the offer you made, I hope that we'll be good friends. I'll need to get used to, well all of this. And James really can't help me in everything, as you well know how men are." She laughed and by the time she knew it they were almost at the place they needed to be at, according to James about the two flights of stairs and Jules guiding her. "If you could Jules, make sure James is there when I wake up, that's all I ask. Perhaps you can even be there after; I'd like a chance to simply get to know a few others." "Of course, pup." Jules smiled. "James and I will be the first muzzles you see after you wake up, and James will be there on occasion to help out with your training, and it's up to him and me to be there for your final test anyway. We've been assigned as your instructors and graders, James because of his relation, and I, because I'm a bitch, and bitches always grade new bitches, as well as I was there to pull you from those Speciest scum at Starfire." She snorted derisively and pushed open a door in front of them reading 'Genetics.' "You wake up in a week. James and I will be there then. Then James will be there and gone as he has his own police duties to attend to and he's had enough time off as is, being a brand new Kaynine just coming back from injury leave. I've been given the pass though, so I'll be there with you the whole time, even if it is just standing in the observation booth as you run the lanes." She pushed open another door to lead them into a hallway with several observation windows peering into operating theaters where others where in varying stages of the Kaynine process. Most where lying in nutrient baths, growing their coats and muzzles at rapid paces, two or three where sedated on the tables as the radiation treatment finalized their new genome structures. "The week after you wake up will be day-long training cycles to get you on your own two feet, you'll get used to your new height, weight, and strength, as well as balancing with a tail, along with getting used to the specifics of your gender, dogs will be dogs, after all." She stopped them both outside a door marked with a simple '06.' "It sounds like a short time, but this program is normally done to already outstanding officers. If you want to be an Officer afterwards, we'll put you through a slower paced education system so you can learn the law, as well as partner up with James or me to get the street smarts that I'm sure you already have." She reached out to lay her paw against the door. "Are you sure there's nothing you would ask, now, before you begin?" Tanya smiled nervously, but her eyes showed the fear of the pain she knew to come. "Not that I can think of, besides from a female perspective, how badly does it all hurt? Never was good with pain... could you tell me how it feels at first? I am not ashamed to say that I'm scared." She looked up into Jules' eyes and tried to smile, trying to not get herself so worked up in the fear, but try to relax, she knew what the result was, and she wanted that beyond all the pain she was to endure. Jules smiled softly. "The first thing you're gonna notice is the floor is warm. Trust me, it'll surprise you, the entire thing is steel. As far as the pain, luckily, it doesn't last so very long, it's the initial treatments with the radiation gun to rewrite your DNA that does it; the easiest way to describe it is that it feels like cold fire exploding out of your chest to the rest of your body. That feeling is the mutation spreading through you; they'll hit you with it until it has spread suitably through your body." The Lab smiled and lifted one of her furred hands. "By that time your fingers will have become rough on your paws, and your fur will have already begun to grow. I'm afraid you'll lose that beautiful hair of yours, but that's just how it is for us." She dropped her paw and took a peek through the small window in the door she was preparing to push open. "After that, they put you to sleep and dunk you in a nutrient tank, where you become a Kaynine in the process of a week's long sleep. After that, the real fun begins." Tanya sucked in a shaky breath, "I can do this." She whispered more to bring herself up than as a statement to others. "I'm ready to start this, I've wanted it for as long as was first introduced over here, a little bit of pain won't stop me. Plus, James made it sound a lot worse than you did." She laughed, this time the quiver was gone, a more high pitch excitement layered within it, she was getting herself psyched. She was smiling, but it was a small fraction of her brighter full smile. She was going through with this, "No one has ever died during this have they?" She half joked, not wanting to really hear if anyone had. She waited until Jules pushed the door open and she stepped willingly through, "I better see you when I wake you know, and if James isn't around somewhere, I'll be beating his ass like I will be yours." She looked up at her newfound friend, already her trust being placed in her without a moment's thought to the negative. "We'll be there sweetheart." Jules smiled as she stepped through behind Tanya and closed the door. "Barring the whole world falling apart." James said with a smile as he passed her with a clipboard in his hands. "Ah, Miss Tanner." A Foxhound smiled as he picked himself up off his lab stool and padded over to meet her, extending his paw. "I'm Jonathan Ghrey, I'll be your Vet for the time that you're staying with us here in the Genetics lab." Tanya smiled upon seeing James and warmly shook the Foxhound's paw. "Pleasure to meet you; I can hardly wait for it all to begin." Her voice only betraying her a little with a slight waver. She looked around at the simple operating theatre that she saw on her way to this one, all the same practically. She took in a deep breath before letting it our slowly. She looked up at the Foxhound and tilter her head to the side, "So when do we start this shindig?"
