The beginning of my personal story, how I became who and what I am, at least character wise, and why the hell I hate royalty.

My name is Jacob David Wolf, sometimes known as Jake Wolf. I'm a writer, a fighter, and oh so much more. I guess I'll finally tell my tale, since it's all I have left to give to the world. I believe it all started about eight months ago, maybe longer. I was sitting around my house working on a new story, when something strange happened. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught the sight of something falling from the heavens near my old country home. I'd built the place a few year before to get away from everything, and to help me decide what to do with my life while I wrote the occasional story, novel, or poem. I was a pretty well-known writer, but that didn't mean that I was surviving off my writing alone, quite the contrary, I was bloody well barely making a living between my writing, and using the outdoors for food.

After contemplating what the hell that weird light was, I walked outside, silently wishing I had a dog. I'd sadly had to bury mine about two weeks before the incident, making the thought sting as only loss could do. His loss still cut deeper than any knife could and I sighed softly as I passed his old dog house. I slowly started along the path behind my place as I caught a glimpse of that strange light flashing in the middle of it. I picked up my pace when the light flashed ahead of me, seeming a lot closer now, and ran around the bend in the trail until I reached a beautiful azure lake. I stared at the lake wondering why the hell the light had seemed to be coming from this direction when the water started to spin, and swirl, with the lights raising out of it. I stared at the light which seemed to flash in the shape of a door before starting to dim into pure darkness, then glanced at the water in the lake, which was now swirling at an even more rapid pace.

The lake suddenly stopped dead and turned clear as glass. I slowly walked forward wondering what had happened to the swirling power, and the strange light that had engulfed the lake only moments before. I stared down into the lake and let out a soft gasp as I saw people wearing medieval clothing and wandering around in a town that looked like it belonged in the early fourteenth century. I noticed that the different classes of people were easily distinguishable, yet as always there were those no one touched. The ones everyone avoided were varying figures walking around in long cloaks of varying colors and cuts that seemed to radiate an aura of power, which was so strong that I could feel it even where I was at. I slowly drew my gaze from the water and started to back up as the image started to shift to a burned forest where dastardly creatures made of shadow and flames were hiding.

The creatures turned as if they were able to see beyond the lake, and one let out a blast of fire as if trying to scorch my flesh. I stared as a stream of fire rose out of the water turning the area it came from to steam. I looked back and saw that the beast was now being attacked by one of the other shadow creatures and quickly studied the two before the image started to fade. The one that had blasted fire at me was shaped like a lion made of shadows and flames. Its body was mostly made of flame, however its mane, tail, claws, and fangs were all made of shadows that shifted and roiled as it moved. The creature that attacked it on the other hand was shaped more like a man made of shadow. The only parts of him that seemed to be made of flame were his eyes, mouth, and the area where his nose should have been. It was almost as if those areas were portals to a world of hellfire and brimstone.

As the image started to fade back to the town from before I noticed that the water had started to swirl at a rapid pace. I stared at it and slowly started to back up, realizing something strange was about to happen. I silently thanked the heavens I was a fantasy writer so I was somewhat prepared for strange things, since nothing could be quite as strange as my imagination. Suddenly a dark voice laughed and said softly "So, this is the world the old man was referring to. I see no great hero, only a scared youth watching from the shadows." I growled softly feeling as if the voice had wounded my pride and replied "I'm not afraid of a worthless voice. I'm also no youth; my childhood was destroyed long ago." The voice laughed and said "No, I guess you aren't a youth yet, but of course a little bit of magic can change that."

I stared as a face made of pure darkness, that glowed with its own inner madness started laughing from the surface of the lake and tentacles of black energy started to rise out of the vortex in the middle of the lake. I turned and prepared to run however before I managed to take a single step the first tentacle wrapped around my ankle and started to wind its way up my leg. A second tentacle of black energy slipped up along my arm to wrap around my throat as two more wrapped around my head obscuring my vision and ability to breathe temporarily. I let out a soft cry of anger and terror as the tentacles started to finish wrapping around my body and fully constrict me before the power that made them started to seep into my body and slowly turn me back into the child I had once been, only slightly different. The dark, insane voice from before laughed within my mind and said "Now I shouldn't have to worry about you causing me any more problems."

I growled softly and replied aloud, "Fuck that, I'm going to fucking find you and destroy you, even if it takes me getting back to my original age first!" The voice laughed and the dark tentacles slipped away from me drawing back into the lake as the voice said "Then train hard, boy. I'll be waiting, and know this you will have more enemies than you can imagine now that I know I truly can't change your mind." I growled softly and said "How could you know that, you didn't even try to change my mind." The voice laughed and explained "I did, the magic couldn't touch your mind, and it was almost as if you created a barrier to protect yourself from the influence of my magic." I snarled softly at that and swore to get revenge on the bastard.

As the last tendril faded the man said "Look at my handy work, and realize just what you face, Boy who the wolves seek. When you realize it you'll come to me begging to turn you back and make you my servant." I growled softly wondering silently how he'd know I'd changed my name from the family name of Fedor, to the last name Wolf after having dreams of being sought out by wolves, and learning more about them. As the tentacles vanished I fell to the ground and winced as I heard a loud crack. I slowly got to my feet and felt along my ribs then winced as I found that the bottommost write one seemed to be cracked, same for the left. I sighed and chalked it up as things to pay back to the fucker with the tentacles then crawled over and stared into the water.

The water seemed to have completely cleared of all images as I looked at it, allowing me to take a good hard look at myself. The first thing I noticed was that my hair and eyes hadn't changed, although my face had a lot less lines than I was used to. I slowly got to my feet and stared at how much my body may or may not have changed. None of the scars I'd gained over the years had vanished, however my shirt was now about five sizes too big, and my pants seemed to be about three sizes too long. I sighed as I realized that the only reason they weren't falling off my ass was that my belt had been cutting into my waist originally. I silently wondered why I'd pulled it that tight then shrugged accepting it as one of my many quirks before staring at my hands and wrists.

They were smaller than I'd last seen them, but other than that they were the same. I slowly sighed and said "So he didn't turn my mind into that of a child, nor did he turn me back into a child. Instead he just gave me the body of a god damn child based on my own fucking body. That's great, just fucking great." I slammed my fist into the water growling softly and angrily. One of the things I've learned about myself in the time when I was alone, I tend to growl like an animal when I'm pissed rather than talking like a normal person. As my hand sank into the water I felt strange tingles of energy running up my arm into my chest.

I growled softly at the feeling then sighed as it started to take the pain out of my ribs, arms, legs, and back. I blinked as it also seemed to take the taint out of my body as the black energy was drawn down my arm into the lake where it slowly disappeared. I slowly laid down leaving my hand in the water and waiting to see what happened. After a few minutes a voice, that was very soft, sweet, and melodious, said softly "Hello young hero." I snorted and said "More like old hack." The voice laughed at that and said "True, though only in mind at this point. Your enemy gave you a tool that you should use against him. However where you are now you can't really do anything, can you?" I snorted and said "Not as I am now, or where I am now, why?"

The voice laughed and said "Then why not come to a place that you can train, grow, and possibly become better than you once were?" I thought about it, and wondered if I should turn the mother fucker's curse into a blessing then asked "What's the catch." The voice laughed and said softly "Only that you accept the role of the prince your enemy has slain, who would be your exact twin. The king will hate you, but the people will love you. Your uncle and others will guide you, should you accept this charge, if not, and then you will be forced to live where you are as you are." I growled softly at that then said "Fine, I accept your damn request, let's get this over with." The voice laughed and suddenly the water started to twist and spin again; as strange symbols appeared upon its surface and that weird light form before started to rise out of the center.

Suddenly the water holding my arm jerked violently jerking me into it and dragging me toward the center where the symbols were starting to form strange words and images I felt I both should and shouldn't understand. The water around me seemed to start flashing all sorts of colors and I was reminded of how a friend talked about an acid trip he'd once had. I silently swore that if this was all a hallucination by the national forest center burning pot I was going to be kicking someone's ass.

Suddenly the spinning stopped and I was tossed out into a lake alongside a large castle. I slowly looked up and glanced past the castle at the town only to realize that it was the town the lake had shown me before. I sighed and mumbled "Oh yay, it's even worse than a hallucination, it's all very, very much real." I sighed and swam to shore, noticing my belt had somehow been lost when I'd come through the portal, or whatever that light had been. I sighed as I got to shore and a man wearing steel armor walked up and pointed his blade at me. He said something in old English, I think it was actually Gaelic, and I sighed then said "My name is Jake Shadow Wolf, I'm from Arkansas." He seemed confused so I repeated it in Gaelic which roughly came out to "Yah Kobe, Scath Faol." He stared at me then motioned for me to follow him. I nodded and climbed out of the lake then started walking along behind him.

As we neared the gates of the castle I remembered what I'd been told by the voice and silently wondered if she'd lied to me. I shrugged silently deciding that whatever the case may be, I would have to accept my fate, since I'd technically brought it on myself by agreeing with the damn voice. I heard the dark one's laughter, and the light one's giggle in my head as the man opened the gate then he spoke to a few of the guards who gathered around the two of us and we continued inside. As we got about midway across the courtyard we were hailed by a man who I swore I remembered from somewhere, that motioned for my guards to stop. He walked over and studied me then said "Well, look at what the cats dragged in. What the hell happened to you?" I started to ask what he meant when I caught something moving out of the corner of my eye and pushed him to the ground.
