A little gift to my good friend rainChu. Part one of a story based on an RP we had so long ago.

As the sun held high over the tops of thousands of trees there was a soft stepping sound over the soft grass and leaves which had fallen from the gentle breeze of the day. The soft steps were made by just one pokemon, a Vulpix. The male took each step gently as he seemed to know exactly where he was, as he should as he has lived his entire life in the forest. However he wasn't that old, but he also wasn't that young. He didn't have any family left in the forest, but he did still have someone in his life.

As he walked through the forest, he could see something right in front of his eyes. Stepping through the bushes he stared straight ahead to a cave that was now his home. Stepping from the bright outside light of the sun to the semi darkness of the cave, which was lit up by a fire pit in the middle of it, he had to squint his eyes a bit to let them adjust to the sudden change in brightness.

As he walked into the cave more, he took a look around for someone or something in particular. He noticed that the main room with the fire pit was empty, meaning that there was only one more place where his search would lead him. Walking past the pit and towards the opposite side of the entrance, there was another hole in the cave, this lead to a room that was mostly empty except for two makeshift beds on the floor. One bed, which was his own, was empty. However the other bed was quite different. He walked over to the occupied bed, giving the sleeping pokemon a gentle nudge with his nose.

"Come on Rain, it's time to get up." the Vulpix spoke out, continuing to nudge the one he had called "Rain" until the other began to groan from waking up, As he moved out of the way, the light from the fire helped light the room up, revealing that the pokemon sleeping on the bed was a Pikachu. Both of them were around the same age, having been living together in the cave now for a month. The two of them were alike in many ways, being alone in life and meeting each other in the forest while trying to find a new place to live. Figuring that they would have a better chance to survive together, they made an agreement to work together for just a few hours, however within those hours the friendship they had made was something that they couldn't just break apart from.

Rain yawned as he slowly sat up in his bed, rubbing his eyes a bit to help him wake up. He looked around for a moment, smiling as he saw who had woken him up. "It's not that late is it?" the chu asked, slowly standing up and stretching out his short chu limbs. "Yeah, its late enough. Come on and let's eat." the Vulpix mentioned as the two of them walked out of the makeshift bedroom and back into the main room of their home cave. In the corner of the room as far from the fire as he could get them sat a pile of fresh berries that the Vulpix had gotten earlier in the morning while Rain slept. "Did you get all of this while I was sleeping? Thanks Firetail!" Rain exclaimed happily as he quickly reached out and grabbed the Vulpix's cheeks. With a grin he pulled him forward and the two of them shared a quick peck on the lips. They weren't romantic in the least, but Rain was extremely affectionate and was not afraid to show it in the least. It took a bit for Firetail to get used to it, but he grew to enjoy how different was from every other pokemon he had met in the past.

As Rain broke the quick peck and let the fire type's head go, they both walked over to the berries to begin their first meal of the day. The meal didn't last long however, all of the berries being gone between the two within a few minutes of starting. Although it wasn't much, it was still good enough to fill the hunger they had built up over the night. As they finished, now full of berries, they still had other things to take care of. Stepping out of the cave, they both took a quick right as they knew where they were headed. It was only a few steps from the side of their cave, which also was shrouded by thick shrubbery. Pushing aside the foliage, they placed their eyes on a small pond of clear water. This was one of the reasons they had chosen to make their home that certain cave. It was well hidden from the other pokemon and they had a pond where they could bathe and if needed drink from. Due to the rainfall a day ago, there were still small puddles of water around the pond as well. For now, they needed to get their fur clean.

Rain gave yet another yawn as they looked upon the pond that they had used many times before. Firetail gave a stretch, still slightly nervous about times like this as the water affected him more than Rain, being a fire type. Shaking off his nerves though, he knew this was something that he would need to get used to for the rest of his life. The last thing he wanted to do was go around all of his life without a mate thanks to never cleaning his fur. Taking a deep breath, he slowly inched closer to the pond like he usually did when this time came around.

Rain on the other hand had no problems with the water. While Firetail was lollygagging around the side of the pond, he had already slipped inside of the pond and felt the fur from his chest down soaked with the cool relaxing liquid. It took him a few moments inside of the water before he realized that he was alone in the water currently. He took a quick scan of the surrounding areas, seeing the Vulpix still trying to waste enough time until he could gain his bravery to step into the water.

Seeing that his friend would need help, the Chu quickly swam over to the edge of the water that Firetail was at, stopping just at the shore. This had come up a few times in the time that they had known each other and he had seen it before with other fire types. He knew the type disadvantage affected him in battle, but still was unsure why it did the same in everyday environments. He reached his paw out and gently held it in front of the fire type. "Need help?" he asked the other male, wondering if this would help him into the water.

Firetail was a bit surprised as the yellow appendage seemed to come out of nowhere as he hadn't been paying attention. As he looked at Rain, seeing how he had been in the water for a few moments now while he was procrastinating as much as possible. He saw that his friend was offering his help, glad that he had someone like Rain around him to help him in situations like this. He took a deep breath, reaching his own paw out and taking the Chu's into his own. When Rain felt Firetail accepting his help, he gently began to pull backwards which lead Firetail into the water.

It took a few more moments, but with a bit of apprehension the Vulpix finally had all four of his paws and his body in the water. Luckily it wasn't that deep, being able to keep his head out of the water without needing to swim. Four legged pokemon such as himself usually found it harder to bathe in ponds like this than those who could walk on two paws. Usually in the deeper ponds, he had to spend his time swimming and not being able to give the appropriate attention needed to clean his fur due to needing to stay above the water. However that's what they both liked about this pond. It was deep enough that Firetail, and for the point Rain as well since he wasn't the tallest pokemon around, could stay above the water on their own power and focus on getting themselves as clean as possible.

As the two of them began to clean off their bodies, getting out mostly the dirt and grime that had been encrusted into their fur from the days of walking around and lying on the forest's floor. The Chu was already mostly done having been in the water much longer than the Vulpix, wading over to the fire type. "Need some help with your back?" the Chu asked him, knowing that he usually did help wash off the parts of the fire type's body that he couldn't physically reach. Firetail simply nodded, letting the Chu do what he normally did. Since his body was already mostly underwater, all the Chu had to do was scrub around his fur, getting all of the dirt loose and off of his body. It only took a few moments before the Pika walked in front of Firetail in hopes he would do the same. Again, it was a normal procedure for them now. Firetail raised a paw up, beginning to do the same process to Rain that he just had done to his own back.

Just like that, it was done. It took less time to clean himself than it did for Firetail to actually get into the water. He still wanted to get out though, no matter how much better being clean helped him feel. He waded over followed by Rain to the edge of the pool, using his front paws to pull himself out of the warming water. However there was another reason why the Chu was waiting for Firetail to get out of the water first. He waited until the Vulpix's lower half was coming out of the water, seeing his tails breaching the water and finishing his pull out of the water. However before every part of his body could reach land, the Chu lunged forward from where he was. His paw was extended out, finding its target as with a slap his paw and landed right on Firetail's rear with a slap. His paw had found its target a few inches to the southeast of his tailstar, causing the Fire type to jump forward before turning back around to the Electric type.

Rain on the other hand acted as though nothing had happened. He pulled his slightly chubby body out of the water, giving a shake to get the excess water out of his fur. He didn't say a word, acted as though what he had just done never happened. He simply gave a look to the confused Vulpix before walking back by him and towards the cave. Firetail began to shake his fur out as well, wondering if this was still more playful antics by the Chu or if there was a reason why in less than a quarter of a day he had been kissed and slapped on the rear by him. He had never in his life had anyone to go that far with him, even after he had his first and second years of dealing with the female's heat in the forest.

For now though, he simply shrugged it off and eventually rejoined the Chu in the cave. There was no food for them to eat, but for their size they had already eaten enough to tide them over until the morning of the next sun's rise. He could see that Rain was back on his bedding, looking up at the ceiling as he relaxed as best as he could. Firetail walked over to his, however he didn't lay down on it. Instead he knew what he had to ask, otherwise it was going to constantly bother and pester at him until he did. He took a slight break, looking over at his friend. "Rain, why have you been doing those types of things to me?" he asked all of a sudden.

Rain quickly sat up on his bedding, looking over to the fire type. He could tell that his friend wasn't normal now just by his tone of voice. His joking and fun demeanor pushed to the side now, being very serious with him. "It's... just how I show I care about you Firetail. We've been through a lot since we met and done so much for each other that I wanted to do more than just.. be normal friends. But if that bothers you then..." he started to say, however he couldn't finish his sentence. "No No" Firetail quickly interrupted, not wanting to let Rain finish what he had to say. He had gotten his answer, the only thing he had wanted. He didn't need to hear it in the Chu's voice; he could tell just by his demeanor that Rain had been worried about him.

"You don't need to stop it at all Rain, I was just wondering why you were doing it. I didn't know if you were just doing it to tease me or doing it to really increase our friendship." he mentioned with a large smile across his muzzle. To show Rain just how much he really wanted this to continue, he did something that he had never done with either a male or a female. He trotted over to the Chu and without a word, locked lips with him just as Rain had done when he brought home the berries. However this kiss wasn't out of appreciation like Rain's was, this kiss had more into it. This was a kiss of friendship, bonding, and perhaps even a bit of love mixed in. It lasted for just a few seconds, but for the Chu it felt like an eternity of happiness until their lips finally broke apart.

Rain simply sat there for a few moments as everything seemed to be spinning to him. He was a jokester and loved to do things like that, however he could tell there was a little bit of a difference than what they were talking about. He knew Firetail wouldn't mind his jokes and might even join in more on them in the future, but in the back of his mind there was something nagging at him that there was more to that kiss than just friendship. He finally turned over to the Vulpix, giving him a smile.

The two shared a gaze, eyes looking into one another's, until the trees around their cave began to let them know something neither of them had noticed. Rain's late awakening and the time it had taken to get Firetail into the lake had caused the rest of the day to practically vanish. The sun was setting now, already making the deeper part of the forest that they were in dark. The sound of Hoot-Hoots waking up from their daily rest. This was the signal that Rain and Firetail usually took for when it was time to sleep. They went to their separate beds like always, but their gaze on each other never broke. However that was until their eyelids slowly closed, causing them both to gently fall asleep with a soft smile adorning both of their muzzles.
