#4 of Lost in LA

When I woke, the first thing I saw was a big burly Labrador standing over me, growling with his teeth bared. I blinked a few times, trying to clear the fogginess in my head. The black-furred Lab snarled angrily.

"Who the hell are you and what are you doing with my girl?"

"God damn..." I groaned, reaching a paw up to rub my head. "That fucking hurt..."

"I'm only gonna ask one more time. What the fuck are you doing to my Carly?"

"I didn't do nothing, dog! I was just talking! She made me feel better after I freaked out."

"Why is it that I don't buy that bullshit for a second?"

"Takashi!"

I looked around, trying to spot who had spoken in Japanese. To my astonishment, Carly was standing there, growling at the Lab with her hackles raised.

"You speak Japanese?" I asked, stunned.

"Yeah, I do. I used to live over there. Carbon, get off him! He's a sweet guy, and he's looking for his person."

"Oh yeah, puppy dog? Are you looking for your wittle person?"

I snapped. I brought my paws in close, then pushed up with all the strength my body could muster.

The Lab, though outweighing me by at least thirty pounds, flew up into the air and fell in a heap a few yards away. I scrambled to my paws and growled deep in my throat, eyes blazing with a sudden fury. I took a step towards the Labrador, hackles rising on my neck.

"Okay, buddy, you just crossed the line," snarled the Labrador as he regained his paws.

"The name's Bolt," I barked, launching myself towards Carbon.

We collided in a blur of fur and claws and teeth, each trying to pin the other down. Though at a size disadvantage, I was able to maneuver Carbon's muscular frame off balance, making it easy to knock him over. From there, it was a simple matter for me to pin him, putting a forepaw on his neck and the other on his chest.

Carbon growled, unable to find the leverage he needed to dislodge the shepherd pinning him.

"I'll be damned if some little coddled Labrador gets the better of me," I snapped.

"You're a fool. You think this is all about muscular strength." Carbon whipped his tail around, knocking one of my rear paws out from under me. I tipped over, off balance.

Carbon made his move, knocking my paw off his neck and pushing me aside. He regained his feet and stalked towards the fallen shepherd, snarling.

"Takashi!" Carly shouted again, moving in between the two males. "Carbon, stop it!"

"I'm gonna teach this little shit how to respect his betters," Carbon growled, trying to get around his soon-to-be-ex-mate.

"You lay a paw on him and see what happens," Carly threatened.

"Oh yeah? What are you gonna do?"

"Try me and find out."

Carbon laughed, a mean-sounding laugh that took only seconds to really piss me off. I stood up behind Carly, ready to back her up if needed.

Carbon laughed again and swung his paw, striking Carly across the face and sending her falling to the ground. She cried out, bringing her paw up to rub her stinging cheek and glaring up at the Labrador with newfound hatred.

"Hitting me is one thing, but I won't stand for you hitting a girl!" I shouted, lunging at Carbon with my teeth bared.

The smug look on Carbon's face wiped off immediately as I crashed into him, sending the two of us to the floor. Isnarled, doing my best to get my teeth around the Lab's throat.

The other dog quickly realized that he had a good chance of being killed right then and there, so he changed tactics. He swept his paw out, attempting to kick my feet out from under me.

I saw the paw coming, yanked my hind paw up, and brought it down on the appendage, pinning it in place. Carbon's expression changed to worry as his paw was pinned and he snapped at my forepaw.

I saw my opponent's weakness and took advantage of it, paw snapping out and pinning Carbon's head to the ground by the muzzle. In a flash, I had my jaws around Carbon's throat.

The black Labrador felt the sharp teeth nicking at his skin and froze.

"Give me one good reason not to kill you right now," I growled around the hank of fur in my mouth.

Carbon didn't speak. He just breathed heavily.

"You've got about two seconds to get your face out of here before I decide to remove it," I said, releasing the Lab.

Carbon took all of a second to regain his footing and bolt for the door. He swept around the frame and disappeared from sight.

I turned to Carly in time to see her regaining her paws.

"You alright?" I asked softly.

"Son of a bitch," she growled. "I help his ass out of a tight spot and this is how he repays me?"

"He's not worth your time," I said firmly. "He's an asshole and that's all there is to it."

She smiled at me, a warm smile that made my heart flutter.

"You seem to have it figured out. Would you mind me sticking around?" she asked shyly, a cute look of pleading on her face.

"It'd be my pleasure."
