The Taste of Lonleniess

Well I had the idea of writing a short story with the theme that is presented in this one. However my friend challenged me to do it in 500 words. I did it in 499 words. including the title.

A lone Hare stood in the icy wind of the mountain. The whole world laid below him the green of the forest and the blue of the sea. Yet something was missing from his life, he did not realize it but something was missing. He walked back into his cabin and lit the fire; he savoured the warmth of the flame then went back to what he had been doing all his time up here. He sat down at his desk and started writing.

It was his writing that had brought him up here in the first place. He needed the fresh open air to help him think and he wanted to be away from the distractions of everyday life. It was not a bad place he had set up, it was comfortable, sustainable and beautiful. But this certain existence was best spent with the company of someone else. The hare did not realise it but he was alone. He was a young handsome hare and he had not even tried to find a mate. It was his book that lead to this, all he wanted to do was write a book. 'The Vengeance of the Fox' by Jonathan Timely. A simple novel about his ancestors and their fight against their natural enemies foxes. Of course times had changed since then and now all of Moran was at peace.

So this is where the story begins. A hare alone in the mountains, there is nothing special about this hare or the mountain. In fact there is nothing truly exciting at all to begin with. The exiting part starts when the hare starts to realise how alone he is. Rather than take the smart idea and leave the mountain for company he stays sinking in a depression of loneliness.

This hare chose a path that many people take when they do not need to a path that can never be untaken. He stood at the edge looking out over the world. He had reached the worst possible path of loneliness. He blanked out the sound of the river behind him, the sound of nature. He blocked out the smells, the tastes everything. He stuck his left foot out over the edge. Ready to fall.

Fate however had a different plan. There was a scream from behind him. He turned placing his foot back on solid ground. He heard it again, a scream of distress. He ran towards the river, finding a pile of clothes by a tree. He looked down the river and there was a Vixen being bashed against the rocks. With no thought of his own safety he jumped in. The current was strong but he was an experienced swimmer and managed to fight against it. He grabbed her and pulled her to the bank. He dried her off with his shirt and wrapped her in his jacket.

"Th...th...th...Thank you." She leant over and kissed him.

"I'm Jane." The hare was no longer alone.
