This is one of my college essays about some of the issues that hinder the U.S. from [according to the essay question] becoming a Utopia.

Issues of Utopia

Born and raised in the United States of America I was always taught that there is massive amounts of potential in everything and that something could always be improved or made better. So I've always saw things not just as what they are, but what it could become to exceed its current state as a means of improvement no matter of it being a social situation, a talent, a new technology, or even a country. Due to the recent re-election the 44th President of the united states of America, Barack Obama, my thoughts have currently been on the United States and some of its current issues as a country that could be improved or made better. To the rest of the world the United States is portrayed as a place of endless possibilities, absolute freedom, and the promise of an overall better life and that the U.S. is a clean, near-perfect society with the patriotism and hard work of its population being the life and backbone of the country itself. There are a vast amount of social-economic issues that the people of the United States have to resolve such as racism, poverty, and classism if we ever want to actually achieve a "utopia" of a society.

Thinking of this of this nation's history and its development into the declared land we live on today, I've come to the inevitable realization that this nation is built upon blood and tears. The "american race" is and should be who we currently address as "native american",

and "white americans" are, according to historic events and geographical origins, Europeans that have simply come to North America, and commonly known "blacks" are African people involuntarily abducted from their homeland and displaced across the Atlantic ocean into what was known at the time as the 13 colonies. The general population of people that we currently refer to as "whites" have almost entirely slaughtered a respective culture that is native to the land of North America with the justification that it was there destiny to expand, ruined African cultures and displaced our people for hundreds of years, and many others things of that nature. I also come to another realization that this nation is rigged to favor mostly Europeans in North America through the existence of an social-economic system that thrives on the broken backs, bloody knuckles, and tears of most "middle class" and poor minority populations. In most recent events an African-American president has been re-elected into the presidential office, though this ultimately will not solve any of the social immaturities that are bred within this country, such as race, that prey on our social-economic status as minorities in the United States, but only grant them more recognition in both negative and positive ways. There will always be "white" and "black" and not a unified solid population because of the one ideology that has been created since the pre-development, and is uniquely a characteristic of this nation, which is racism. For as long as this country continues to exist there will always be a division among people by the justification of skin color and/or tone (which is how we fail as a whole human species).

Classism is also an undeniable factor in the outcome of one's experience living in the United States. While thinking about this country I've also noticed how a person's level of achievement and success is often determined by his/her financial wealth; "who-has-what". Secondary to the previous statement, I understand that this country, like any other country, requires an economy in order to exist, internationally trade material goods, and acquire resources to continue the vicious cycle of constant need and endless consumption. Although it allows a country to exist and even expand, it also can be a burden to the individuals who are considered to be "poor" or "middle class" based on their financial wealth. These are commonly identified as people of minority such as, immigrants and African-Americans (people not considered to be a minority) or people of low or average economic standing. The concept of class and financial wealth in the United States is simple: The more money you have, the more pleasant you experience in the United States will be. Though this system of class segregates people by their common financial positions it is one of the many realizations that you learn to become de-sensitized to and embrace living in this country.

Poverty is one of the biggest and most noticeable issues in this county, and is the most common in New York City. It is undeniably linked to classism and the, now subtle, racism of the United States. Almost immediately minorities are categorized as poor because of their classified "race" which may be based on socially reinforced immature stereotypes. Though to some degree poverty is existent and people of minority are in poverty, although this is not true for all

people all of minority. There is, in the current condition of the United States, a fairly even amount of poverty for all "races" of people, but because of the overall historical social-economic reputation of "blacks" and minorities we will always be view in such a way.

So if the United States of America is ever to actually become the utopia it claims to be it must correct these unnoticeable flaws about its population. Poverty, racism, and classism are the, what I believe, major aspects of his country that need to change because they hinder us as population from exceeding our current state and improving socially, economically, and overall as a nation. As quoted by the 16th president of the United States, "A house divided among itself cannot stand", and as long as we keep segregating ourselves by petty things such as financial standing, origin of ethnicity, and things of that nature we will never truly achieve a utopian society. Though I imagine, what would this country be like if no such things existed?
