Chapter 5 of Intertwined.

"Will you sit still?" Blake growled out in annoyance. He looked up into the mirror as he grabbed another small claw full of hair gel. He rubbed his hands together, spreading the gel evenly, and lathered the substance throughout Alex's head fur. Alex ducked his head down a little in response to the cold liquid and closed both of his eyes. "It's going to turn out terrible if you don't quit moving your head."

"It's freezing! Plus, I'm not used to people touching my hair; it's weird."

"Well get over it. I'm telling you, you're going to look great when I'm done. Every guy at the party is going to want to jump on you." Alex cocked his head in confusion. He wasn't quite updated on the latest "hip" lingo.

"Jump on me?" he asked.

"Yea, jump on you." Alex remained confused. "They're going to want your nuts," Blake tried again. The look of confusion didn't let up. "They'll want you to do the dirty." It clicked.

"Oh," he responded, "Oh! Why? What if I don't even know them?"

"No problem, boy. You're hot, single, and your hair is going to be fantastic. They'll jump you in a heartbeat."

"Well what if I don't want to be, um, jumped?" he asked with air quotes. Blake pulled up on his hair hard as if on purpose. "Ow!" Alex yelped as a burst of pain filled his scalp.

"No pain, no gain, bud. It hurts to look good." Blake reached for the blow-dryer that was placed on the counter top, turning the knobs to "low" and "hot". He held one paw on the side of Alex's newly acquired hairdo as he blow-dried the other side, hardening the gel in place.

"Do you honestly think I'm going to look good with a Mohawk?" Alex questioned.

"First of all: it's a faux-hawk, not a Mohawk, and second of all: yes, I think it's going to look sexy." He switched places with his hands, now blow-drying the left side of his head and holding the right side in place. Blake looked up at Alex again in the mirror and slowly pulled the blow-dryer away from his head, hoping the faux-hawk would stay in place. It did. "There!" he cheered, "What do you think?"

Alex stood up from his stool and looked into the mirror. He tilted his head to the left and then to the right, examining the look from every angle. "Not bad," he admitted.

"Not bad? It's fucking fantastic! Now we just need to find you some spiffy clothes. I'm thinking a party-slash-formal-slash-available type of suit. What do you think?"

"I-I'm not really sure what that means," he stuttered.

"It means a bright colored suit that looks good with or without a jacket. That way you look amazing with it on and even better after someone tears it off."

"Well, can I just keep the jacket on?" Alex's face was puzzled.

"Why the hell would you want to do that?"

"I don't know. I guess I don't really want to, well, you know." Blake tried to hold back his laughter, but couldn't help but let out a chuckle. Before he had time to respond completely, a high pitched ding came from across the house. "The doorbell? Are people already showing up?"

"No, the party isn't scheduled until tonight."

"Then who's at your door?" Blake pushed his way out of the bathroom, down the hall, and into his bedroom. He wrapped his claw around one of the blind folds and peeled it open slightly, looking down at the boy standing at the front door.

"Oh god," Blake whispered.

"What?" Alex asked as he tried to peek out the window as well, "What is it?" Blake let go of the blinds and scratched behind his ear, trying to think.

"Alex, stay right here; I'll be right back." He quickly rushed out of the room and down the stairs before Alex even had time to reply.

Blake licked both of his paws and ran them through his hair, trying to calm himself down. 'It's okay,' he repeated to himself, 'It'll be fine, just think Blake, think.' He let out a giant exhale and reached for the door handle, ripping it open with a smile. "Hey!" he yelled with fake enthusiasm, "What're you doing here so soon?"

"Just came to see you for a moment; I missed you," Chris said with a big smile, "It isn't a bad time, is it?"

"No!" Blake shouted, "I mean yes! Well, yes it is a bad time, but I'm still happy to see you."

"Well, can I come in?" he laughed suspiciously.

"No, uh, no you can't. You see, I'm still setting up for the party and everything. It's a bit messy in here."

"Well, let me help you."

"No! Really, it's fine. I've got it covered. You just go find something nice to wear; don't wear the same green shirt you wear to every party."

"But I love that shirt!"

"Me too, but it's getting kind of old. I've got everything handled here, just go get a shirt and grab a bite to eat or something. I'll see you tonight, okay?" Blake's wide, fake smile could light up the room.

"Fine, but you better call me if you need any help with the decorations. You know I'm always here for you, hun." Chris grabbed Blake's paws and pulled him in for a kiss. Blake pecked him on the lips and then pushed him away playfully. "I'll be back in a couple of hours." Chris turned around and began to walk down the pavement, clicking the unlock button to his car.

"Bye!" Blake shouted as he hastily closed the door. When the entryway slammed shut, he leaned back onto the wooden frame and exhaled once again. 'That was close,' he said to himself as he regained his breath and made his way back up the staircase.

"Who was it?" Alex asked curiously.

"My boyfriend," Blake replied, "He still doesn't know what happened between us." Alex awkwardly looked around the room.

"When are you going to tell him?" he asked, not making eye contact. Blake bit his lip and hesitated before answering."

"Well, let's go find that outfit."

Sky couldn't keep his saddened eyes off of his newly acquired cast. The hard material was wrapped tightly around his hand and lower arm; the pain only subsided slightly. He took in a giant breath of air and slowly let it out, hoping the stress would soar away with the wind. He was crying on the inside, but nothing showed on the outside. No tears, no whimpers, nothing. All that he wanted was to be held in Vince's arms and hear that everything was going to be alright.

The loud sound of a car horn echoed throughout his ears, causing him to nearly fall over with fright. His ears laid flat against his skull, trying to shield them from any more noise. The horn sounded again and Sky knew where it was coming from. He quickly jumped from his seat and ripped open the window, eagerly awaiting to see the truth. There Vince stood in the driveway, as if he had heard Sky's prayers.

Sky hopped out of his seat and rushed quickly down the stairs. As he approached the front door, he quickly hid the cast behind his back and ripped open the door with his other hand. "Vince!" he yelled out at the fox approaching his driveway.

"Hey," Vince laughed, "You're not busy are you?"

"Um, I don't know. Why?" He pushed his cast farther behind his back, making sure to keep it out of Vince's vision. Vince noticed his action and squinted at his side with confusion.

"I thought you might want to do something tonight, but if you already have plans it's no big deal." He continued to stare at the husky's strange actions. "Are you okay?"

"Yea! Of course! Why wouldn't I be?"

"You look like you're trying to hide something. Either that or you've got a really bad itch on your back."

"An itch, yea, I've got a bad itch. Probably poison ivy or something." He began to make itching motions with his arm.

"Come on, Sky. I'm not stupid. What do you have behind your back?" Sky bit his bottom lip and let out a sigh. There was no way out of this one. He moved his arm from behind his body and lifted it up in front of him for Vince to see. Vince looked down at the cast worried. "What happened?" he asked sincerely.

"I slammed my paw in the car door and shattered a few bones. I'll be fine." He had used the same lie on his parents as they drove him to the hospital.

"Holy shit. Are you okay? How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine now. The pain sucks, but it went away when you got here."

"Can I be the first to sign it?" Sky laughed and blushed a bit.

"Yeah, definitely." Both boys stood in place awkwardly. Sky didn't know what else to say and he could tell Vince was just as nervous as he was. They continued in quiet until Skylar finally broke the silence.

"So," he said, "do you like parties?"

"Yeah!" Both of their faces lit up.

"Awesome! This kid I know from my Home Ec. Class is throwing a party tonight. Do you want to go with me?" His eyes widened with embarrassment. "Well not with me, with me. It's not like a date or anything. Just as a friend. Two friends who go to a party together just to hang out. Not a date."

Vince grabbed sky by the paws and looked him in the eyes. I'd love to go on a not-a-date with you."

The day sped by like a train at top-notch speed. Alex sat completely still next to the entryway of the home. He watched as party-goers came filing into the house carrying every kind of alcoholic beverage; from beer to whiskey, they had it all. Music was blasting and people were dancing, and as more and more people filled the room, Alex's nerves grew.

Alex was never a party-person. He was never outgoing or a social butterfly. He originally took a theater class to break out of his shell and learn to be more open, but it hadn't helped yet.

He watched as people drank and danced, and the feeling that he was out of place was only growing.

"Hey!" Blake yelled out from beside him. He had a red party cup in his right hand and his boyfriend Chris under his left arm.

"What's up?" Alex yelled back, excited to see someone he knew.

"I wanted to introduce you to my boyfriend. Alex, this is Chris; Chris, Alex." They exchanged nods.

"I've heard a lot about you," Alex said to Chris.

"Good or bad?" he joked back.

"Good."

"Well you never know with Blake." They both laughed and Blake gave Chris a playful slap on the chest.

"Why don't you grab yourself a drink?" Blake asked Alex with an eyebrow raised.

"I don't drink," he responded politely.

"Me neither," Chris chimed in.

"Oh boo!" Blake called out, "You guys suck! Learn to live a little." He took another gulp of his drink. "So, Alex, have you seen any sexy guys around? Besides me of course."

"I guess; I haven't really been looking."

"You haven't? Seriously?" His jaw dropped low. "Hold my drink honey, I'm going to find him a man." He passed his drink down to Chris, pulled Alex up by his arm, and rushed into the crowd. The blaring music was piercing Alex's ears and he was biting his lip out of both nervousness and confusion. Blake hastily pulled him up through the herd of teenagers and stopped on the third step of the staircase.

"Now take a good look at all these handsome men. Their young, dumb, and drunk." He pointed a claw out and scanned across the crowd. "Pick one, any one."

"What?" Alex asked.

"Pick any guy you like and I'll help you hook up with him." Alex laughed nervously.

"I don't want to hook up with any of them."

"Nonsense, stop playing the innocent-little-boy card. You want them and you know it."

Alex looked across the crowd to try and find a guy that caught his interest. He didn't like guys that drink or party too much, so he scanned for they guys on the outskirts; he scanned for guys just like him.

"That one," he said, pointing at a tall german shepherd standing with a couple friends near the edge of the room."

"Aww, come on; he looks boring."

"I like boring."

"Well I don't like him."

"This was your idea to begin with!"

"Yea, I know, but you're supposed to pick a fun guy. Someone you can dance with."

"He may not be fun, but he's cute. That counts for something, right?" Blake nodded relentlessly.

"Fine, he's got one out of two, I'll give him that."

"So, what now?"

"Now we go talk to him!" Blake grabbed Alex and began pulling him through the party again. Alex was more nervous than ever and didn't know what to do. He was never good at talking to people he didn't know, let alone a cute guy, but at the same time he agreed with Blake. He needed to get out there and see what fish were waiting for him in the sea. If he had any hope of getting over Adam, he had to meet someone knew, someone who would keep his mind at ease.

As they emerged from the crowd, Alex found himself already standing directly behind his man of interest. He knew that this guy was going to be tall, but he had no idea just how tall. From the staircase the boy looked just shy of six feet tall, but up close he appeared to be at least six foot four. Blake pushed Alex into him and he found himself slamming his head onto the boys back. He quickly caught his balance and pulled himself away as the man turned around in confusion.

"Whoa!" the boy called out, "You okay?"

"Yea, sorry. My friend -," He stopped in mid sentence when he realized Blake was no where to be seen. He paused and looked around.

"Your friend?" the boy asked, puzzled.

"My friend pushed me, but he disappeared. Weird. Anyway, I'm sorry; I didn't mean to bump into you."

"Don't sweat it." He turned around and rejoined the conversation with his friends. Alex bit his lip and took a deep breath. He tried to gather all the courage he had in his body, he had to get over his fear.

"I'm Alex!" he shouted awkwardly. The boy turned back to Alex.

"Hey. I'm Dalton."

"Well, nice to meet you Dalton." Alex stuck out his paw ungracefully and the two shook hands and exchanged smiles. "So what brings you to the party?" He laughed nervously.

"One of my friends dragged me along. She said she didn't want to go alone."

"That's nice of you." He laughed again.

"Yeah I guess. It turns out that when she said 'alone' she meant 'with two other friends." They exchanged smiles once more, but Alex was too scared to make eye contact.

"Actually the same thing kind of happened to me, but he brought his boyfriend."

"Ouch! Yup, you win this one." Dalton's towering figure was very intimidating, but at the same time very comforting. Alex continued to make efforts to look at his gorgeous eyes, but whenever he did he began to feel the awkwardness even more.

"Yeah, but oh well. He's not really my type anyway." Dalton smiled.

"What is your type then?" Alex brought himself to look up at Dalton's pupils. He took in another deep breath and swallowed a large pocket of saliva. He wanted to try and gain enough courage to simply say 'you', but couldn't gather the strength. Instead, the question remained unanswered and the silence made the situation worse. "Alex?"

"Huh? What?" Dalton chuckled under his breath.

"I said: what is your type?"

"Oh! Uh, I don't know. Blake says I like boring guys." He slapped his paw to his face when he realized how stupid his answer was. Dalton chucked louder.

"Well then you're really going to like me; I'm as boring as they come." Alex removed his paw from his face and glanced up at Dalton's cheesy, grinning smile. He burst out into laughter and let out a sigh of relief. Alex stared into his eyes once more, but no longer felt the awkwardness that he did before. He felt more at ease, more at home, and more confident than ever. His mouth opened and let out a line that showed his newly acquired strength.

"Then you're perfect for me," he said with a smile.

Vincent parked on the side of the street, his friend right by his side. He wanted to reach out and touch Sky's paw, but was too nervous. He's had a dozen girlfriends before, but this was the first time he shared mutual feelings with a boy; that scared him to death. "Is this the right place?" he asked, staring at his soft fur.

"Yeah, I'd say so. Judging by the insanely loud music and the two dozen cars parked outside," Sky joked back. He popped open his door and Vince quickly followed behind. Vincent gazed up at the house and scanned it's front. He noticed the shadows of many people walking by the windows and could hear the entire party trying to over-talk one another. He glanced over at the husky again; the excitement in his eyes was clearly visible.

As they approached the house, Sky knocked lightly on the door and stood tall. His tail was wagging with anticipation. Vince laughed at him and reached down for the door handle. "It's a party, loser. You're not supposed to knock." Sky chuckled nervously. The moment that the door opened, loud voices and music overpowered their ears. Sky was shocked that he recognized so many people. From where he was standing, he could already see two people from his history class, four from his math class, and a dalmatian from PE.

"Wow. Great turnout," Sky said.

"I've seen better," Vince replied with a cocky tone. He looked around at all of the people dancing. Many were dancing alone, many were dancing with the girls from the nearby all-girls school, and some were dancing with their friends. He glanced back down at Sky and drew in a breath. Still holding it in, he reached out his hand directly in front of Sky. "May I have this dance?" he asked with an awkward smile.

As he reached out his hand, someone standing behind Sky caught his eye. Sky opened his mouth to accept the offer, but was subtly interrupted by Vince. "Uh-oh," he said.

"What?" Sky asked, thoroughly confused. Vince began to panic as the boy behind Sky grew closer. It was Blake. He was wobbling with his step and clearly intoxicated, but whether Blake be sober or drunk, Vince didn't want to risk Alex finding out about his secret.

"I've got to pee!" he yelled out quickly before turning and dashing into the crowd. He pushed away each person that he passed to make sure he had a clear path. As he made his way through, he heard various rude and vulgar comments. One girl yelled "Watch were your going, loser!" and another yelled "Fuck off!" He ignored the outbursts.

When he finally emerged from the group of teens, he found himself near the kitchen. He looked around for a bathroom door, but the dimly lit room and bustling of people made it hard to concentrate. As he let out a breath of air, a faint sound caught his ear. Even with all the loud talking, blaring music, and pounding sub woofers, his ears picked up a familiar frequency. The easily recognizable chuckle sounded again and Vince turned around to confirm his suspicion. There Alex stood, laughing his adorable laugh, smiling with his gorgeous smile, and glowing with his perfect coat.

There was one setback though. The laugh was caused from another man. The smile was directed at another man. The coat was held by another man. Vince couldn't explain why he felt the way he did. He had Sky now; he should be happy, but he still felt the jealousy. He still felt the urge to sweep him away from this boy and ride off into the sunset. The pit in his stomach grew wider and deeper, and it began to overcome his rational thoughts. His eyes pinpointed the red party cup on the nearby counter; it was filled to the brim.

The plan was perfect. Vince would grab the drink, pretend like he's walking by, bump into this new guy, and spill his drink all over him. It'd be perfect tactic to separate the two. The jealousy in his heart was clearly taking over. Alex smiled and chuckled again. Vince took a step forward and grabbed the cup. He slid his tongue over his teeth and grinned and evil grin, but his plan was foiled before it began. As he looked up from the cup in his hand, he noticed that the "moment" the two were having had already been interrupted by a spotted dalmatian. The evil grin never subsided.

After exchanging a few words between each other, the dalmatian pulled away and tried to pull Alex with him. Vince chuckled in victory. To his surprise, Alex stopped in his tracks. He stood still with his eyes closed for a couple seconds and Vince could see his chest fill with air. His lip slowly curled back down. Alex ripped himself around, pushed himself up onto his tip toes and kissed the boy softly on the cheek. Vince turned away. He couldn't bare to watch Alex kiss someone else. His stomach became a brewery for anger and jealousy. Vince's claws clinched tight and the cup he was holding crushed with ease. The alcohol inside erupted like a volcano.

Fresh air; he needed some fresh air. Vince quickly rushed forward to the sliding glass door on the other side of the kitchen. He pulled the door open, stepped outside, and slowly slid the door shut. The cool breeze of the autumn nights were relaxing. Vince craved for something relaxing. He still couldn't comprehend the feelings that he was having. He could feel the jealousy for a guy that wasn't even his. He had a nice, cute, sweet guy who was willing to be his, but still he felt passion for another. It just didn't make sense to him.

He looked up into the dark atmosphere and gazed at the nighttime sky. The space, stars, and solar systems above him had always been fascinating since he was a pup. His eyes scanned across the black abyss until he focused in on a specific star. This star was the brightest star in the entire sky. When he was small, his mom told him that the star was really a spaceship exploring outer space. She claimed that they were out there looking for people that don't live on this world, people like us, but unlike us at the same time. As a kid, he believed her, but as he grew older and observed the star that never moved, he concluded the story was simply a child's tale.

"Stop!" Vince heard someone yell out faintly. His ears perked up tall and he ripped his body around to the sound. He listened carefully. More voices were heard, but they were nothing more than a mumble to him. He followed the sound. The noise grew louder as he approached the fence that separated Blake's house from the golf course it was stationed by. His legs crouched down and with one leap, he pulled himself over the small, white fence and into the golf course. Staying low, he approached the voices.

"Where is it, you little prick?" As Vince great near, two canine silhouettes became visible. The closer he got, the more clear the bodies were.

"I don't have it" The smaller one replied. Vince's eyes grew wide as he realized who's voice he was listening to.

"What do you mean you don't have it? I have a buyer in that party right now. What am I supposed to tell him?" The pupils grew even wider as he realized who the second voice belonged to. His fangs began to reveal themselves and he kept a close watch, trying to resist jumping into action.

"I don't know."

"You don't know? That's the best you got? I'm about to get my fucking ass chewed out. I promised this guy pot and he expects me to give it to him. I gave you one, simple task and you couldn't even do it."

"I was just coming to the party with a friend; I left it at home so I wouldn't lose it."

"Seriously? How fucking retarded are you? I didn't ask you to stash it; anyone could stash it. I asked you specifically to hold onto it."

"I'm sorry." The taller one chuckled creepily. Vince crouched lower, getting ready to pounce. He recognized both of the boys, but was confused about the conversation they were having. He thought he had already taken care of Rodger and this weed issue. He was wrong.

"Is that all you can say? I told you, sorry is not going to cut it."

"What do you want me to do?"

"I want you to pay for it." Rodger cracked his knuckles. Vince pushed off the ground and leaped forward. He quickly sprinted toward Rodger, but he wasn't fast enough. Rodger cocked back his arm and threw a punch directly to Skylar's stomach. Sky fell down onto one knee; the wind completely flew from his body. Almost exactly one second later, Vince tackled Rodger down to the ground. He wrapped his claws around Rodger's waist, lifted him off the ground, and threw him straight down onto the flawlessly green grass.

Rodger was scared out of his mind. Vince appeared from no where and before he knew it, he was on the ground getting hit it the face left and write. Vince's fangs were showing as he threw about four or five punches directly to Rodger's face. Rodger quickly wiggled out from under Vince and crawled out of the way from his fists.

Vince looked down at his hands; they were stained with blood from both himself and Rodger. He stayed on the floor for a moment, trying his best to calm his anger and catch his breath. Neither attempt was successful.

"Get the fuck back up, Vince. We're not done here." Vince pulled his head up and looked over to his left. His heart sank. There Rodger stood, his face was bloody, his nose looked broken, and if anyone were to look at him, they'd think he was jumped by multiple people. What tore Vince in two wasn't how badly Rodger was hurt, it was the things in his hands. In one arm, he held Sky by the neck; the grip was so tight that Sky could barely breathe. In the other hand he held a small handgun. The barrel was lined up perfectly with Sky's head and his finger was on the trigger.

"Rodger," Vince huffed, "put the gun down." Rodger smiled a red smile.

"Why should I? You started this, Vince. When Sky's brains splatter all over hole 18, you have no one to blame but yourself." Sky started crying quietly.

"Come on man, don't do this. We can settle this in other ways. No one has to die."

"Oh, I see. When your bashing my head in we're all peachy, but when I'm in control it's time to be rational? Fuck that." He spit blood onto the ground. Vince took a step forward.

"I'll do anything you want. Don't hurt him."

"Don't come any closer!" Rodger lifted the gun from Sky's temple and pointed it directly at Vince. Sky gasped loudly and Vince stopped in his tracks. Rodger looked at the expression on Vince's face, looked down at Sky's, then back at Vince. He saw their complete eye contact.

"Ah, I see what's going on here. You two are together aren't you? I can see it in your eyes." Neither boy talked nor broke the stare. "You're really going to hate me when I kill your boyfriend, aren't you faggot?"

Everything after that happened so fast, almost too fast. None of the boys had any idea on what was happening, for everything was out of complete instinct. Sky quickly tore his head to the left and bit down sharply on Rodger's bicep. He could taste blood spurt into his mouth, but didn't budge an inch. The gun fell to the ground and Rodger ripped his arm away from Sky's jowls. He didn't mind the pain; it was nothing worse than what his face was feeling.

When the handgun hit the ground, Sky kicked it straight to Vince. As he bent down to grab it, Rodger quickly reached into his back pocket and ripped out a switchblade. He flipped it open and held it close against Sky's throat. Vince grasped the gun and pulled himself up. He held it straight out at Rodger and lined up the sights. The boys stood in silence for almost two minutes. Their eyes were locked on one-another and everyone was waiting for someone else to make a move. Sky watched as blood trickled down Rodgers arm, but Rodger acted completely immune. Finally, one spoke up.

"What's the matter, Vince? Did you think you were saved?" Rodger called out.

"If you hurt him you can consider yourself dead." Vince growled back

"Oh, can I now?" Rodger lifted the blade up to Sky's cheek and pushed down lightly. The blade was incredibly sharp and it cut with ease. He slid the edge from the top of his cheekbone slowly down to the side of his lip. Blood began to gradually leak out, similar to a shaving cut. Vince growled louder.

"I'm not afraid to shoot!" he barked.

"If you weren't, you would've shot by now." He grinned wide and pushed the knife down hard for a split second. Sky yelped loud and tried his best to move his face away from the blade. Rodger started to chuckle loudly. "See? You're too scared to save your little boyfriend." Vince's nostrils flared.

"Go to hell." Vince squinted his eyes and pulled the trigger. A metal bullet propelled from the weapon and dove straight into Rodger's forehead, directly above his left eye. The switchblade fell to the ground and Skylar jumped away hastily. He rushed into Vince's reach and grabbed him tight with one arm. His cast was stained with blood and his face was aching in pain. Both boys let out a sigh of relief, but could feel that this wasn't the end. Vincent had just killed a man, there would be consequences.

"Dude," someone slurred drunkenly beside them, "did you kill him?" Vince and Skylar turned to their side. There stood Alex, holding drunken Blake from falling to the ground. Blake was completely intoxicated and seemed almost entertained. Alex was nothing but petrified.

Sky and Vince were victims. They were in the wrong situation with the wrong people, but it didn't seem like that from an outside perspective. From where Blake and Alex were standing, they looked like murderers. Cold-hearted killers. If only they all knew what their lives were about to become, maybe they would've had a chance to make it better.

Just a few weeks ago, the four were strangers, a few kids living every day life, just like any normal teenager's. From that moment on, life would never be the same for any of them. Blake would never live the party life he once knew, Vince would never be the popular kid in school, Skylar would never dream the same dreams, and Alex would never be the innocent kid he once was. Their lives would forever become intertwined with one another and change dramatically in the blink of an eye. There was no way to escape the barbed wire fence they called their lives.
