Against the Flow: Happier Days

Undine's finally reached the end of her Highschool life, and her year group's prom night becomes a truly fateful night.

Undine smiled faintly as she looked up at the ritzy restaurant, light glinting off of its large windows and polished metal details. She'd never been to a place like this before, but she didn't want to miss the high-school graduation prom for the world. She didn't have a date, her appearance not helping her in that regard, but she had still dressed to the nth; a cute green figure-hugging dress with a gold embroidered belt and bow. She'd spent a large portion of her own money on this dress, purchased with money earned from working as a help-desk technician. She was quite pleased with it, particularly when her mother told her how wonderful she looked in it.

She waved her mother off for the evening and stepped up to the front doors, where her friends practically swarmed her. They laughed together, complimenting each other on their attire before heading indoors. Wylie's boyfriend, Matthew, soon joined the group by moving over and smoothly wrapping an arm around her shoulder, he too complimenting their dresses. Another boy, Polly's boyfriend Ryan, sidled up to the group and joined in the revelry.

Soon, only Ocarina and Undine were without someone hanging off of their arms.

They all selected a table together, the six girls and their gentlemen friends, and automatically sank into gossipy conversation over who was best dressed and who would be the king and queen of the evening; a position that the young couples coveted jealously. Undine wasn't as eager on that particular topic, staying politely quiet when the conversation had swung to it and shyly looking down at the table or over at the many other couples, tiny sparks of jealousy flaring in her mind at each one, each girl with her knight in shining armour. She had been top of her classes, except for P.E. of course, which was Ocarina's forte, and had a figure which was quite fetching. She'd been polite, friendly, and flirtatious at times, yet...

She sat without a knight to call her own.

She sighed inside at herself, knowing the reason for her alienation; she wasn't human. Oh, sure, Ocarina was without a date of her own, but Ocarina had explicitly stated that she wasn't interested in any of the boys at school. Undine just wasn't given the chance. Once she'd asked one of the boys, a past boyfriend of Sarah's, if any of the boys at school would be interested in her, and his answer had been blunt and harsh, crushing to the girl's quiet and diminished ego.

'No, because you're a freak.'

Eventually the homeroom teachers gave their speeches, spoke their parts, and told their jokes. She'd been particularly amused by her homeroom teacher's comment how he'd marked Undine as the 'overachieving go-getter possibly to be one day stuck in a menial and boring day job. You know, like mine.'

She'd only smiled warmly at Ocarina when he'd called her the year group's 'guardian angel.'

Their dinners were served soon after, with each student having ordered their meal when the prom was being planned. Undine had ordered a large baked salmon steak in mustard dill sauce with a lightly tossed salad, which had even come with a fish image gently seared into one of the cherry tomatoes. It was, to her rather potent senses, a fantastic meal. She'd even asked the waiter who returned to collect their plates to compliment whoever had cooked it.

After dinner had been cleared away, the year group head boy and girl stood to speak their pieces, with the head girl dissolving into tears over her fellow classmates who would most likely not meet one another in such a setting ever again, the breakup of a family forged by time and shared trials. Undine had nearly shed a tear herself; nearly.

She knew that she was not included in the speech. None of her fellow classmates cared for her except for the circle of friends amongst whom she sat.

Eventually the music started and couples moved to the dance floor to enjoy their evening. Only Undine and Ocarina sat at their table at this point, neither having another to dance with. The teachers had stayed at their seats out of courtesy for the students; this was their night and they were giving the space required for them to enjoy it.

Ocarina tapped Undine and stood, tugging her from her seat.

"C'mon, it's your night as much as it is theirs!" She cheered over the music. "You got all dressed up for this, at least have some fun!"

Undine shook her head faintly.

"But I don't have a..."

"Who cares?"

Undine blinked, this was a point she hadn't considered. With a cheerful smile, she nodded and followed Ocarina to the dance floor.

She had fun, dancing with Ocarina to the blaring music; eventually a slow song came on, and couples started their slow, more intimate dances. Ocarina and Undine, for lack of anything better to do joined in by dancing a slow and graceful waltz. Undine found it oddly comforting.

That was until someone threw tartar sauce all over her.

She'd stood in shock, staring at the sauce that oozed down her front and side, her jaw hanging. The comment she overheard was from Sarah's ex-boyfriend Dean as harsh as his action.

"I like some tartar sauce with my fish, how about you Ocarina?"

He'd managed to get a light round of laughter from his friends, the more bullying of their year group, several of which were girls. Their laughter Undine found more hurtful than the boys'. Most of the others who had seen this, however, stopped their dancing in shock at his actions.

Undine's eyes watered, to which he jeered and mocked, and she did start to openly cry, slapping him hard before turning to run off.

"You... you've ruined everything!"

With that she ran off, hurrying out of the room with even the teachers standing up worriedly looking for the cause. They heard a yell, a hard thud, and a few extra gasps from the students before they parted and Ocarina stormed out, dragging Dean to the middle of the room before leaving, following Undine worriedly. Undine's homeroom teacher reached down and pulled Dean from the floor.

"That bitch hit me!"

"Which one, the one you enraged or the one whose soul you just tried to crush?"

"What?!"

"It's time to grow up, Dean; you're enjoying your night, a night meant to be one of the happiest of your life? You just ruined hers, and you should feel ashamed. Would you have liked it if she did it to you?"

"No!"

Mr Wing leaned to his face, every feature of his dead serious and quite angry. "Exactly."

Ocarina found Undine crying her eyes out in the girls' bathroom. She'd tried in vain to wash the sauce from her dress, a white smear down her front and side now surrounded by wetted fabric. Ocarina tugged a tissue from her purse and hurried up to the crying nurse shark, handing her the tissue and allowing her to throw her arms around her taller frame for what comfort it would bring. Ocarina said nothing, just allowing the shark to cry her sorrows out as hard as she could. Eventually she lifted Undine from the embrace and looked into her face worriedly.

"I... I should have known something like this would happen." Undine mumbled between sniffles. "Happiness for me; pff, I might as well turn the tides back."

Ocarina sighed at the comment before leaning down to the shark's face.

"U-Undine, there's something I've wanted to tell you for a while." She mumbled. "But... I've never known how to put it."

"What?"

Ocarina moved forward and kissed her.

Undine's eyes almost bulged in shock, not sure how to handle this sudden turn of events. Ocarina was so... earnest, and she eventually melted into the kiss, allowing her and Ocarina's tongues to gently wrestle before the taller girl broke the kiss.

"You're coming home with me." She said.

After a short car ride, Undine had been handed a shirt to pull on after removing her dress for washing. Ocarina lived in a humble little house, rented from her parents, and she had her own washer and dryer for clothes. With Undine's dress being machine washable, something which impressed the taller girl, it was quickly put into the machine and left to clean. Ocarina tugged the now half-dressed shark to her room and threw her onto the bed, where she nervously held her arms to her borrowed shirt. Ocarina removed her dress and hung it within a dress bag in her closet before moving onto the bed, on all fours over the smaller girl.

The shy shark was nervous; she'd not really considered this much before, but...

"O-Ocarina... I've never..."

Ocarina shushed her and gave her another swift kiss.

"Don't worry hun, I'll go slowly," She said, before kissing Undine's neck between her gills gently and getting her to writhe ticklishly. "I want this to be good for you too."

Undine nodded and stole a kiss, wrapping a hand behind Ocarina's head for a moment.

"A-alright."

Undine awoke the next morning slowly. It had been a busy and active night, and she felt sore in places that she didn't know could feel sore.

Not all of it was a bad ache though.

It was the first day of the weekend, and she looked across the bed at Ocarina still sleeping soundly, a smile on her face. This alone made Undine smile gently, though it was short lived as thoughts swelled up in her head. Was this... good?

She'd been so caught up last night she hadn't considered the possible repercussions, the first worry her parents; sure they'd been accepting of her not being human, but...

And then there were what her friends would think! Granted she knew what Ocarina thought about it, last night had been a pretty good indication; but what about Wylie, or Margaret? Would this be the breaking point in those friendships?

Ocarina stirred under the sheets and slowly woke, sitting up and looking over at the worried shark curiously before putting on a cheerful face.

"Morning." She mumbled.

Undine only blinked back.

"G-good morning."

Ocarina giggled faintly and gently stroked Undine's hair. "Oh, there're things that could make this a better morning, but I'd agree that it's quite a good one."

Undine nodded faintly, and Ocarina sighed.

"You're probably worried about what people will think now, hmm?"

Undine nodded worriedly.

Ocarina only gave a giggle and gave Undine a quick kiss on her cheek. "Don't be. Please, don't be afraid, I know this is probably weird for you, but... I love you. There's nothing wrong with what happened last night, and if you want... I can be yours."

Undine nodded faintly, though her worries weren't entirely melting away with Ocarina's words and comforting smile. She offered a smile back, and Ocarina giggled.

"C'mere." She said before giving Undine a deep kiss. "Now, I'll go make us some breakfast."

Undine nodded, watching the taller girl get up and leave the room, still as undressed as the shark had made her the night before. She smiled cheekily to herself, eyeing Ocarina's figure before she'd gotten out of sight; maybe this wouldn't be all bad.

After breakfast the pair dressed, Undine being handed clothes by Ocarina since her only dress was still in the wash. They went out together to the park where they ran across Wylie and Matthew, the pair also seemingly feeling the previous night's vigorous activities. Matthew seemed not to notice anything different, but Wylie smiled and put her hands on her hips.

"So, you and Ocarina hmm?" She asked cheekily.

Undine blushed and shied away, not daring to look Wylie in the face. Ocarina chuckled.

"Wylie, no teasing, that's not fair." She scolded. "How would you like it?"

"Fair enough." She said back, hands up defensively. "Sorry Un', I couldn't resist."

Undine nodded gently.

"I think she's still coming to terms with it..." Ocarina mumbled, tugging Undine into a one-armed hug. "But that's alright; I'll help her through it."

"We were headed to the beach next, you two interested?" Wylie asked.

Undine shook her head vigorously, hiding her face from Wylie.

"Hmm? Something wrong Un'?"

Undine nodded. "I- I can't go to the beach." She said meekly. "I'm a shark."

Wylie slapped her head. "Oh, right, sorry Un'; I guess I'm just so used to you I don't even notice anymore."

"S' okay."

Wylie and Matthew said their quick goodbyes and headed off to the car park, leaving Undine and Ocarina in the warm sun.

Ocarina leaned down and gave Undine's ear a sly nibble.

"I sure noticed last night." She said with a giggle, managing to get the shark to blush. "Though they're going to freeze their asses off at the beach this time of year."

The pair wandered the park for a few hours, soaking up the sun and enjoying the day, even finding time to quietly watch a doe and her fawn graze by the still-flowing river that ran through the park. When another group of people came past the deer fled, but it had been something that Ocarina and Undine had enjoyed watching together, even capturing photos on their phones.

The daylight passed faster than the two girls would have liked, and soon night fell. They stopped at a quaint restaurant for dinner before Ocarina treated Undine to a movie. The comedy had set them into high spirits, though afterward when they returned to Ocarina's house, Undine came crashing down to cold hard reality; her parents were standing at the front door waiting patiently.

Ocarina and Undine stepped out of the car and looked up at them worriedly.

"Undine, where've you been? We've been worried sick!" her mother Lucy snapped, hurrying down the yard.

"I-I..."

"Dean threw tartar sauce on her, so I brought her back to my place to clean her dress." Ocarina said, not at all fazed. "We went out while her dress was finishing in the dryer and sort of lost track of time."

"Why didn't you call us young lady?" Her father snapped.

"It didn't occur to us." Ocarina said nervously.

Undine cowered from her parents; she'd never seen them this angry at her before. She clung to Ocarina for what little protection the taller girl could provide with her tail between her legs. Ocarina moved to the front door, opening it and letting them in. Undine stood in the kitchen nervously, her parents waiting nearby while Ocarina went and fetched Undine's dress from the tumble dryer. She returned with it neatly folded in her arms, and she handed it to Undine gently.

"We're going home Undine, come on." Sigmund said disgruntledly.

Undine nodded and turned to follow them, waiting for her parents to be out of the room before giving Ocarina a peck on the cheek.

"I'll see you on Monday."

Ocarina nodded and kissed her back, before giving a push to the front door.

"Go on, your parents won't wait long."

Sunday passed rather quietly, with Undine spending the day sitting in her room and surfing the internet. It had become too cold for her to go to the swimming pool in the back yard, as the engine had run out of gas to heat it and the next can was not expected to arrive until Wednesday, so the water, though crystal clear, was off limits unless she wanted to catch a deathly cold.

She'd not spoken to her parents about her relationship with Ocarina, too afraid of their reactions.

Monday rolled around, and she dressed and arrived at school in usual fashion, her mother giving her a goodbye hug for the day before driving to work. Undine strolled into the grounds and was met at the gates by Ocarina, who tugged her into a hug before walking with her.

"We've only got vacant periods today, since classes have ended." Ocarina said to the grey shark. "I was wondering what you wanted to do."

Undine shrugged. "I figured we could just bum around on the computers or hang with the others, if you wanted to do something else we can?"

"Well..." Ocarina started with a big cheeky grin on her face.

Undine blushed and pushed the taller girl away. "Ocarina not here!"

Ocarina giggled, wrapping an arm around Undine's shoulders and shaking her playfully. "Ah, but you would..." She mused playfully, making Undine blush brighter.

They arrived at their homeroom and sat at the same table where their other friends were sat, with Margaret worriedly throwing her attention at Undine.

"Undine, oh my god, are you alright? After what happened on Friday, we were all so worried!"

"Yeah, I'm alright, it didn't stain thankfully; that would have been horrid..." She mumbled.

"Word is you went home with Ocarina here." Sarah commented with a wry smile.

Undine nervously nodded.

"And..?"

"C-can we not, please?" Undine asked.

Wylie waved a hand. "Sarah, after what happened last time everyone was involved in Undine's love life, don't you think it safer to avoid the topic until she feels comfortable to tell us?"

Sarah slouched grumpily. "Yeah, alright."

"A-all I'll say is that it's nice," Undine mumbled nervously, "to have found someone."

After a few hours, lunch break rolled around and the girls spread onto the oval. It was horridly cold this winter's day, and a foot of snow had built up on the expansive lawn. They occupied each other's time with a snowball fight or two, snow fort building, and other snow-related silliness. Soon they were too cold to continue and they all huddled together for warmth while enjoying each other's company. It was a nice way to end the year, Undine admitted to herself.

That was, until someone grabbed her tail and swung her into the snow with a squeal.

"This is for ruining my weekend you freak!"

It had hurt considerably to have her spine stretched in such a way, but the kick that struck her gills hurt more so. She screamed and cringed, curling away from her assailant and trying to protect her now painfully sore neck. A second blow never came however; as Ocarina tackled him to the ground and pulled back a fist. She was tugged from him by a teacher, with the Principal hurrying up to them worriedly. He towered over Dean, who struggled to stand from the freezing snow.

Ocarina stopped struggling against the teacher and relented, which allowed the teacher to release her. Her first action was to tend to Undine, lifting her from the snow and putting a handful of the white powder to her throat worriedly. She was crying again, holding Ocarina close as she cried onto her shoulder, and Lowell glared at Dean.

"What's your excuse this time, Dean? You slipped?" He growled angrily. "No, not this time, this time you learn! Mr Lance, take him to the offices and call the police, this time it was assault."

"You wouldn't dare!"

"You're eighteen, Dean, and you just assaulted someone who is still considered a minor, this is a serious offence, and you will be held accountable for it."

Dean yelled his protests to this as he was practically dragged off by the P.E. teacher, and Mr Lowell knelt down to Ocarina and Undine.

"Are you alright, Undine? He struck you rather hard..."

Undine shook her head.

"He k-kicked m-my gills!" She managed with a cough, "Th-they're really s-sensitive..!"

Lowell nodded. "Don't worry Undine; he won't be a problem from now on, I'll see to that."

She nodded as Lowell stood and walked off, his long coat streaming behind him as he trudged through the snow. Ocarina gently rubbed Undine's back as she choked out a few sobs onto her shoulder.

Eventually she stopped crying, the pain subsiding somewhat and she stood back upright, removing Ocarina's arm. Her throat sported a new, painful bruise, but she seemed fine otherwise.

"Guess I won't be swimming underwater for a while." Undine hoarsely said. "This'd hurt like hell to breathe through."

Ocarina stood up, dropping what was left of the snow she'd picked up, and gently kissed Undine's bruised gill, something to which she looked at Ocarina confused.

"Just kissing it better Un'." She stated.

The rest of their friends watched this small interaction between the pair, each unsure what to say until Wylie broke the awkward silence.

"So, you two really are an item huh?" She asked slyly. Undine blushed heavily and nodded.

"I... It's not a problem is it?" She asked worriedly.

"Don't see how it could be." Wylie replied, looking around the other girls in the circle. "To each their own; we're still your friends, regardless of who you want to be with."

"Have you told your parents?" Sarah asked curiously.

Undine shook her head. "N-no, I..."

"You're afraid of how they'll react..?" Ocarina asked, to which Undine nodded. "Alright, I can pop around to help you talk with them?"

Undine nodded. "That'll help... thanks."

Ocarina smiled and gave her a hug. "That's what I'm here for Un'."

The day last of the school sessions ended and Ocarina gave Undine a ride home, stopping at the shark's home to converse with her parents. The front door opened to Sigmund's face, and he let them in readily to keep out the cold. Undine and Ocarina moved through to the family room, where Lucy was already seated on the couch watching a movie wrapped in a blanket. A second blanket showed where Sigmund had been sitting, and the two girls sat next to one another in the two armchairs in the room. Lucy looked over at Undine and rose in her seat.

"Undine what happened, that looks awful!"

Undine rolled her neck slightly to show it wasn't all that painful

"D-Dean assaulted me." She mumbled, to which Lucy gasped.

"So I heard." Sigmund said, sitting on the couch next to his wife.

"Sigmund, you didn't tell me?"

"I figured we'd talk about it when she got home; now that she's here we can." He grumbled before looking up at his daughter expectantly.

She scratched the back of her head momentarily. "He pulled my tail and kicked me." She said. "He snapped something about ruining his weekend, but I wasn't exactly paying attention, you know, from having my spine pulled."

"No need to be so snappy Undine, we're not against you." Sigmund said.

"C'mon Un', you don't need to be like that." Ocarina said, petting her shoulder.

Undine nodded with a shy blush. "S-sorry." She mumbled. "After he kicked me, Ocarina tackled him, but Mr Lance and Headmaster Lowell stopped her before she could do anything more..."

"Your headmaster called the police and had criminal charges placed against him." Sigmund informed.

"At the very least it'd be animal cruelty?" Ocarina asked with a giggle, before cringing from Undine's playful slap.

"This is serious, Ocarina, Lowell thankfully had the mind to get photos from the hallway cameras of Undine's injury."

Undine sighed. "I don't care." She mumbled. "As long as he leaves me the hell alone, I don't care."

"Well, he's been officially charged, and since Lowell managed to get evidence to prove your injury we don't need to be involved."

"And I didn't need to bite him this time." Undine growled.

There was a collective nervous mumbling in the room following this statement.

"Anyway, we're glad you're safe." Sigmund said. "I don't know what I would have done if you'd been more seriously harmed."

"I... I'm fine dad, honestly I am." Undine said. "But... speaking of more serious things..."

"Hmm?"

She looked nervously to Ocarina, as if seeing if she had advice to give on the matter.

"I... I've found..."

"You found..?"

"Someone..."

"Someone..?" Sigmund parroted back, "Honey, you're going to have to be a little more specific."

"I... I found a... a partner."

There was a momentary silence before Lucy broke it. "You mean a boyfriend?" She asked hopefully.

"Mm, not quite." Undine mumbled, before looking back over at Ocarina and holding out her hand, which Ocarina took gently.

For a moment her parents only looked on quizzically, before realization dawned.

"You mean Ocarina..?"

Undine nodded.

Sigmund seemed to consider this, sitting back on the couch while Lucy hopped up and hugged her daughter.

"Oh honey, that's great!"

"It... it is?"

"Of course it is! I always hoped you'd find someone for you, though I must admit I hoped that it'd been a he, I'm happy for you regardless."

"You're not... upset?"

"Of course not, honey!"

Undine looked to Ocarina worriedly.

"R-really Mrs Viper?"

"Of course, this is just as wonderful; though I'd probably have preferred she found a man, I still don't think I have any real right to dictate who she chooses to love. My parents hated me choosing Sigmund, but I've stuck by him, haven't I honey?" She looked over at Sigmund, who seemed to have gone vacant. "... Honey..?"

He snapped back to reality. "Hmm? Oh, yes, sorry, yeah, even against your parent's wishes we've stuck together."

"Something wrong dad?"

He seemed to linger on this question. "No, no." He mumbled. "Though I must admit I was kind of looking forward to having a son in law I could take fishing..."

Ocarina smiled and stood, stepping over to him and kneeling next to the couch. "I love to fish, and I'm sure Undine would like to learn."

Undine blinked and nodded faintly. "I'd wondered why you'd never taken me up the river."

"But you..."

"I'm a girl, but I'm still a shark." Undine insisted, "Fishing's what I do."

Sigmund sighed.

"Is it alright if I spend the night at Ocarina's house..?" Undine asked.

Her parents were momentarily taken aback.

"You two are going to have dinner here." Lucy said quickly.

Undine lay back on the bed she was sharing with Ocarina this night, clad in only her bra and panties. Ocarina followed close behind, stealing a kiss from the shark before gently kissing her bruise.

"Ocarina, you know kissing doesn't heal anything." Undine quipped.

Ocarina giggled and kissed her bruise again.

"Well, other than my mood."

"What, you're complaining?"

"Of course not." She replied, giving the taller girl's ear a nip.

Ocarina sat upright and looked down at her scantily dressed girlfriend.

"Un' are you sure about this? Being with me, I mean? You're not..."

Undine shook her head and made her tail snake over Ocarina's thigh, sneaking around her ass and giving it a slight flick that made the tip of her caudal fin snap against the supple skin like a pinch, leaning up and pulling Ocarina back down to the bed with her.

"I've never been happier."
