Spyro and the Sun God: Chapter 4

Blue opened his eyes. What had just happened? He could only see a big bruise over his smoking wings. He used his strength to get himself back up from his defeated posture and unfolded his damaged wings from around his body, trying to spread them and inspect the damage done to them. Apparently the attack he had just received had done quite a work against his trusty pair of wings, but nothing time wouldn't heal. He knew after flapping them twice that he would be able to fly soon. "What... happened...?" he asked himself as he looked around confusedly, he was brought back however, by a strong roar coming from town's centre. Thundering explosions and beast howls could be heard rampaging through the once peaceful dragon village. "The whelpling...!" he exclaimed into the air, and then, with all his remaining will, moved his aching body towards the action.

As Blue approached, he was able to see the source of the chaotic hour of the day. The gigantic dragon who had just appeared was wrecking havoc around the village with no mercy at all. Blue approached with intentions of stopping it, but this beast had a terrifying sight to it. Its outstanding size gave it all: Powerful and diamond-cutting sharp looking claws, both on hind and front paws, legs and arms with rippling muscle all over, straining the scales over them and bulging veins where before one could only notice the flaccid limbs of a small whelpling. "Spyro..." the evil Elder groaned, staring, almost admiring the monster our hero had become: His shoulders broadened and the fins going through his tail, back and finishing at the top of his head being sharpened, almost like a chain of small golden saws. Spyro's muzzle had elongated slightly, his maw was open, showing his sharpened canine fangs, his nostrils above were still smoking from the fire he had been breathing and his now brimming red eyes intimidating everything that came in contact with them. "He's... a beast! But how?!" Blue questioned himself, "Did someone enchant this dragon with magic power? Is this the work of sorcery?!" he thought, still questioning the mere existence of the behemoth in front of him. Spyro stretched his wings, the sole movement of his strong dragon wings blew storms of wings around that even knocked the rocks formed as debris from the destroyed section of the village. Spyro roared, being unable to form any words as he walked towards Blue, his paws leaving huge footprints everywhere he stepped. Blue felt almost frozen at the approaching monster, what was he supposed to do? The purple beast could easily kick him miles away or burn him to ashes if he even tried to fight. There was nothing to do! "Rrrrr... RRRRRRRAAAAARRRR!" Beast Spyro roared into the sky, before he spread the wings up and prepared a second fireball attack. Blue cursed down his breath and looked around for any kind of shield; he knew another fireball would burn down his wings for good if he tried to shield himself with them. That's when the Elder noticed Ember, still laying down unconscious next to some of the debris around Spyro's former home. Blue grinned and strode left quickly, grabbing Ember again and holding her in his claws, pointing her still asleep form to Spyro. "Grrrr..." he growled in response, Blue smirked at this. Apparently the rage had completely consumed the control over his body, but his sight wasn't completely lost to the fury that was currently lit inside his gigantic body.

"ONE false move" Blue neared one of his sharp claws to Ember's neck, "And she's a goner. Understand?" he said loudly, making sure he sounded clear to the probably deaf berserk dragon. His opponent groaned, the wings folding back but still kept in a defensive stance. "You might be all beefed up but you're still the compassionate fool, caring for little creatures such as this whelp! Now... you're going to do exactly what I tell you..." Almost as if by totally tamed, all of a sudden, Beast Spyro, moved towards Blue, walking and making lot less noise than before. Blue smirked as he beckoned with his finger, "You, lay down like a good dragon" he ordered. Spyro growled and laid down on his belly, almost like a tamed dog. Blue chuckled slightly, then told Spyro to raise his face. "Now, you're gonna sleep and stay here..." Spyro looked up only to see Blue's fist coming right down at him. It was too late to react, even with his enhanced reflexes. He got struck on the side of his face, knocking him off and down to the floor, surprisingly it was all it took to knock the behemoth dragon out. Blue grinned, "Not so tough even with all that beef huh?!" he taunted, glaring daggers, with wishes of dead, towards Spyro, who was still groaning in his unconscious form. Blue decided it was not wise to let him wake up with him there, so he turned around, looking at Ember in his paw, "You'll do a fine bait, dear." He whispered to the sleeping dragoness and jumped up, flapping his wings, which seemed to be almost as good as new after they had had their rest, and Blue took off into the sky, flying away from dragon village and into uncharted regions. Half an hour later, Spyro awoke in the center of the village, groaning from a pain in his head, but seeing Flame standing above him.

"Spyro? Spyyyrooo?" Flame asked, looking down at the purple dragon. "Oh finally, ya woke up. Here lemme help yah." He grasped Spyro's claw, and helped him to his feet again.

"What happened...? I don't remember a thing..." Spyro placed a claw on his head. "All I remember is the dragon beating on me...then a big surge of power, and it's all blank from there."

"I dunno what happened either." Flame shrugged. "I just got here after hearing all those explosions and stuff."

"Ember..." Spyro looked around at the destroyed village, and the other dragons trying to recover from it. "I've failed..."

"Don't worry, Spyro. At least you drove Blue off again!" Flame re-assured the dragon, patting his shoulder. "I think I saw him fly off toward Avalar when I was on my way here."

"Avalar, huh...well...I can't beat him anyway...so what's the point of going after him?" Spyro asked, sighing.

"Don't say that, man! You can beat him! I know you can!" Flame smiled, his tail wagging. "Yeah, it's alright, Spyro. You can't win em' all." Mina smiled cutely at the purple dragon. "But that doesn't mean you should give up!"

"You're right..." Spyro nodded, standing back up, and stretching a little bit. "Let's get going to the professor's lab." He said before turning and walking in the direction of the professor's volcano lab. As Flame followed, Mina flew down to Sparx, nudging him gently.

"Hey Sparxy, wake up dear." She cooed, smiling.

"Mmhhn...no, I want more butterflies, mommy...wha...what?" Sparx blinked, waking up again. "Oh! What happened? What am I doing here?" He questioned, sitting up on his arms.

"Don't worry about it right now, sweetie. We've got to get going." Mina giggled, before flying back to Flame's side.

"Uhh Right!" Sparx shrugged, before flying over to Spyro. "Hey, what the heck happened Spyro?"

"I'll tell you later. Right now we need to get to Avalar." Spyro replied, looking up at the dragonfly.

"Yeesh! What is it a secret or something? Aarghh!" Sparx growled. As the group passed through the village, Spyro looked at all the other dragons, wanting to get Blue even more now. "Don't worry, people. I'll get the monster that destroyed the village." He tried to tell them, but they just glared at him, some growling softly.

"You're the monster!" One of the younger dragons blurted out, looking over at Spyro, who blinked in surprise.

"H-huh?" Spyro felt bewildered at the comment. His heart almost stopped. Had he missed anything while he had been out cold? "Wh-what do you mean by that?"

"Uhm... I saw most of what happened." Mina announced, hovering above Flame's head. "You turned into this big, scary dragon, and totally kicked the other guy's butt! But then he got you back, and flew off with Ember."

"And he almost killed us too!" a second young whelpling said, his mother grabbing onto him and pulling him back, avoiding any eye contact with Spyro.

The male dragonfly around Spyro felt his anger building inside at such insolence, "What are you talkin' about, kid? The monsters were Blue, and that...that big... purple thing..." Sparx stopped mid-sentence, fitting the pieces of the puzzle together and placing one of his hands on top of his head, "My brain hurts." "Hey!" Flame stepped forward towards the mother of the young dragon, looking down at the child. "Don't call Spyro a monster! Did you already forget that he saved us all from Red? If it hadn't been for him, all of you would most likely be enslaved right now!"

The first child backed off, hiding behind his mother as Flame walked back to Spyro. "C'mon, Spyro. Let's get goi- Hey, what's that thing?" He pointed up towards the sky, a small metal machine flying down towards them.

"Oh, must be another of the professor's inventions." Sparx answered, flying up to it once more, seeing it was like the messenger bird from before, but a little more advanced-looking, yet still badly designed, and again looking like it was about to blow up any minute, a small flame bursting to life on the side. He grabbed the attached note before it lit, and flew back down to the others with it.

Taking the note, Spyro started to read it out loud like he did the last note. "Spyro! I need you to come to the lab right away! This is extremely urgent! -The Professor" "Well, let's not waste any time then! Let's get going." Flame started to flap his wings, taking off into the air, Spyro following after him. When they arrived, they were greeted by the mole, who was very alarmed and panicked.

"It's Red, he's escaped!!" he blurted out, ushering the two dragons inside, and bringing them to the test subject room, where the empty spot labeled "RED" was.

"Damn! How did he manage to get out of this one?" Spyro asked, a soft growl escaping his throat.

"I don't know! I know that the jar was sealed tightly, and he should have been powerless in his shrunken state..."

Spyro growled louder, his anger rekindling. "I should have...I should have just squished him when I had the chance! DAMNIT!"

"Whoa whoa whoa calm down bud. It's not your fault." Flame said, walking up beside Spyro. "No need to start blaming yourself."

"But it's true! Now I know! I know he's behind of all of this!" Spyro jumped, shaking his head slightly as he growled, "I'm gonna get him this time!"

"Spyro, Spyro. It's not the right time to jump into this kind of conclusions. Right now our focus should be you. I saw everything that happened down there from up here. After the first three explosions I knew it couldn't be a firework display. Let's leave Red for another time, I think it'd be wise to run some tests on you again, after seeing what happened not too long ago, I'm sure the readings will be different! Come with me." The professor lead Spyro out of the room, and to the scanning table, laying him down on it. After he scanned the dragon, his jaw dropped at the results. "Just as I feared... Spyro...! Your body seems to have absorbed the machine, and used it to give you massive amounts of energy!"

"Maybe that's what caused you to morph." Mina suggested, looking over at the scan results.

Sparx floated besides Mina, putting a hand below his chin, "Well talking about a freakin' monster-born-from-lab-accident movie" he got a head-slap from Mina.

"I wouldn't doubt it" the professor ignored Sparx, "There's no other explanation." He hopped off his chair, walking over to the table and showing Spyro the results. "I think you can see some difference between the scan I'm showing and now and the one from earlier. Your genetic structure has been almost totally changed."

"Almost?" Flame repeated.

The professor began to explain "Well you see. A being is made up from genetic structures that," but got interrupted by Sparx.

"Ahem, no biology-expert minus one here" he said sarcastically, the other three nodding in agreement.

The professor shook his head in disappointment but picked a few purple blocks from the ground next to Red's former playground. He assembled them into some sort of lizard-esque form on the floor "Hmm... Let's just say Spyro is made of these blocks," and got interrupted again before even starting. "Sloooooower..." Sparx said, but got a head-slap from Mina again.

"Thank you. Now, let's say we start adding more blocks to him, until there are more than his body can handle. This would start a bio-chemical reaction within him that would cause him to... let's say, Mutate. And change form, because all that energy he adds up can't be contained in such a small body."

"I see...so that's what did it." Spyro turned back over onto his belly, looking at the figure with purple and red blocks the professor had made.

"I don't know what might have caused it exactly. But I have a theory that, since the machine reacts with intense heat, it must have activated itself with your fire, Spyro. Did you channel your fire energy through your body anytime during the battle?" he asked, but Spyro shook his head, "Are you sure?"

"I'm positive. I only use fire to breath it out of my body, nothing else..." Spyro explained.

Flame intercepted though, "Maybe when you get angry?"

Spyro's eyes widened, he remembered. He was in deep anger and despair while fighting Blue earlier. He knew that his fury made him heat up and produce stronger fire, but he had no idea that the fire running through his veins would react in such way. "Maybe... that's it." "Hmm, just as I thought. The heat inside your body mixed up with this machine..." the professor sighed, folding his arms together while frowning. "You must learn to control your rage, Spyro. You're a very dangerous dragon now."

Spyro's head lowered, Flame sat down and looked at the professor, then at Spyro, then back at the professor, "Isn't there a way to let him control it?"

"Not as of now" the old mole sighed, "I haven't collected enough data yet. But I think I could try researching for some kind of way of extracting the machine, or what's left of it."

"Didn't you say it was a very risky procedure before?" asked Spyro.

"I did. But if we don't do something soon, we don't know what else your body is capable of."

"Yeah, from all I've heard, you could end up exploding buddy. We don't want that" Sparx said, flying in front of Spyro's face.

"But I can't just risk anything now, I got to save Ember from Blue first!" the purple dragon groaned.

The professor stared at Spyro, seemingly he was determined and blind to any of his warnings, "Hmm, that's true. But still, you must control your emotions, especially while you are in the middle of a battle. Understand?" Spyro nodded, the professor nodded back and told him he could get back up. Spyro was about to leave, but sat down as an imaginary question mark appeared over his head, "Uhm... anybody knows where Blue flew off to?" Sparx and Mina shook their heads at the same time. The Professor shrugged, he had seen the whole battle, but as soon as Spyro had finished it, he had started to prepare a rescue device to pick him up. However, it had completely failed, so he had had to resort to sending the Message Bird MK-02. Spyro sighed both in disbelief and sorrow.

Flame walked in front of Spyro, "Hey, you know what? I've heard that Blue is often seen at the main gate to Avalar's Homeworld! You think he might have a lair there?"

"Hmm, if that's the case, then, Spyro, Avalar is in danger too" The professor said, glancing over the purple dragon while walking towards one of his portal gates, "If you are willing to go, then I can open the miniature Super Portal for you."

Sparx raised a hand suggestively, "You know, we could always take a walk towards the main gate too..."

"We'll go" Spyro said, the determined look in his eyes again, getting a sigh of disappointment from Sparx. The dragonfly hated the Professor's portals. "So until now, Spyro, I want you to keep an eye on anything that causes this transformation, okay?" He warned, putting the paper from before in a file cabinet.

"Don't worry Professor, I'll keep an eye on Spyro here." Sparx patted Spyro's back gently, smiling for the first time in hours.

"Yeah, likewise" Spyro rolled his eyes. The professor was done, the super portal, a rusty ex-golden gate with a red decoration top opened a magical gate. Spyro walked towards it confidently. A comment from the Professor made him stop though.

"Flame, aren't you going with Spyro?" the mole asked, raising an eyebrow while looking at the red scaled young dragon.

"I think it won't be exactly the best idea... With Spyro gone for a while, we'll need all the help we can get here" Flame explained, Mina nodding. "I think the best to do is for me to stay here and help the other dragons rebuild what Blue destroyed. We'll need to defend well if anyone else comes to ruckus you know."

With no need for anymore explanations, Spyro nodded and returned to the Super Portal, he was ready to leave but had to look back for Sparx. "Hey, aren't you coming?" he stared wide eyed at his friend, who was hovering in front of Mina. Sparx held one of Mina's hands in his own, "Even a whole different dimension won't separate us my princess! I promise we will defeat this evil, return here with our dear friend and bring peace to the realms once again!" he flew away from Mina, an arm dramatically placed on top of his head. He stopped as Spyro shook his head, uninterested by his melodrama, and walked away. Sparx looked back at Mina and nodded, "I'll be back" he said with a Schwarzenegger-esque voice, turned around, and then flew to the portal.

Flame sighed, shaking his head, "I think Sparx has a personality problem."

"Tee-hee! You have to admit he's very cute when he acts tough" Mina said, giggling.

Flame rolled his eyes, "I'm going back to the village, Prof, you keep up that research!" he said, then left to his destination. The mole nodded and switched the Super Portal off when it had been done with being used.

Elsewhere, in the humid caves where Balgaar's lair was, Blue walked along one pathway towards the mountain's dungeons. He was in front of one of the prisons when he threw Ember in, he woke her up with the rough treatment. But it was too late for her to try any resistance. Blue had quickly chained her to a wall in front of the barred door. "You are going to spend some time here, dear. It will be only for a short time. But while you stay with us... please make yourself at home. I'll send you somebody to keep you some... company, heh heh." He said, grinning evilly. "Wh-where am I?!" Ember shouted, "Why have you brought me here?! Who are you?!" she thrashed left and right, but found her four legs chained strongly against the wall, even her wings were pinned to the wall, it felt more painful than it looked with the shackles folding them together.

However, no reply came back. Ember futilely tried to escape a whole twenty minutes, shaking her binds left and right, up and down, but to no avail. She was imprisoned in the darkest place she had ever seen so far. "Spyro... I miss you... where are you...?" she said, tears forming in her eyes as the sad water fell down from her face. She closed her eyes, sobbing and whining softly as she waited.

"You're not alone" the sound of the door to her prison made Ember shake and open her eyes again.

"Huh?" she looked around, but didn't see anything, only the door closing again, "Who- who's there? Is anybody there?! If there is, please help me!" she called out, but nobody replied. She could hear footsteps though. Soon, she was able to feel the presence of somebody watching her. "Who... who's there...?" she asked again, this time with a shiver of spine running through her back. "A friend..." two yellow, big spheres lit up in the middle of a dark corner. "I've come to play with you."

She stared at the menacing eyes as she heard the snake-like voice, she felt really scared out of her wits. "G-get away... don't come near!"

"Weren't you calling for someone? I'm sure you're lonely here..."

The pink dragoness' maw trembled, not being able to form words out of her fear.

A grin formed within the darkness "We will have so much fun..."

To be continued...
