SE-14 Refinding King Lion By Darrel James Vanwinkle (Writing as Ratseye) 08/27/2004

Soon, Dominic's party was once again within the mansion, while Dominic placed some very important phone calls. When all was planned and plotted, Dominic rejoined his team in the office/den.

Dominic said, "I contacted the unicorns in South America. It seems that they aren't even at their usual gathering home, for they are attending an OHEC. That stands for One Horned Elite Conference. And they're under the protection of Merlin and the Celtic forest god, Silvanus. And furthermore, we've been asked to not disturb them in the Realm, where humans are not exactly allowed. Therefore, we're going to be focusing on the lycanthropes I've met. I called Sexen and Pablo, and they both can't wait to see us. I can't wait to see them again, personally."

Richard smiled. "They are the ones who lived here in your mansion for a while, aren't they?"

Dominic smiled. "Yes, that's who they are. A werefox and a wererabbit."

Shane grinned. "The nicest pair of guys that I know. And so snuggly..."

Richard chuckled, "And you would know, Shane. Everyone knows about your plushies."

Shane blushed suddenly! "Richard! You weren't supposed to tell anyone about that!"

Dominic, Damian, and Jonie all laughed!

After a good and friendly laugh, the team once again traveled through the shimmering air portal, provided by Shane this time, for he had been there once before, as they emerged in the backyard of the Reinhard and Kingston homestead in Mississippi.

Linux Reinhard, Ponce Hartwell, and Ramon Rodrigez greeted the group, upon arrival, and the three pounced and hugged Shane profusely!

Richard giggled. "I see that they know you, Shane."

Dominic grinned. "But it's a knowing well earned. Right Shane?"

Shane grinned back. "Damned straight! And I am glad to see them again, though it's been about nine months, I think..."

Linux smiled, saying, "Shane saved my life. I owe him so much for giving me a new lease on living with my brother Sexen. However..." He got serious. "...I cannot stay here any longer. There is a reason Sexen and I never really liked living together. Unfortunately, I have nowhere good planned to go to live at."

Dominic grinned again. "I am definitely going to have to get a zookeeper's license. Linux, you can come live with me in the mansion, if you'd like. And from there, you could see Shane more often. And don't worry... I have more rooms than I ever use. Sexen stayed there for awhile, as my guest, so you can imagine how secure it is."

After a short visit with Sexen and Pablo, the group made a stop of the mansion to drop Linux off and get him set up in one of the rooms and to make sure Devyn knew not to pounce the werefox by accident. Then, the team was off again, to Reed Huxley's apothecary. Fortunately for Dominic, Freeway was indeed there, snoozing on Reed's couch. And typical Reed was in his full werekangaroo form, working in the apothecary. The visit was brief, fortunately, for Reed was very busy, then the team headed back to the mansion and through the gateway leading to King Bighorn's castle in the Furry Realms.

King Bighorn smiled when he saw Dominic and the others. "Greetings, my friends. A fine welcome it is during this time of peace."

Dominic smiled. "How went the Kings Summit, my liege?"

King Bighorn replied, "It went well, especially after your friend, Sir Fox, helped solve the mystery of the Rat King. In fact, I just returned here, as of yesterday. And I didn't return alone..." King Bighorn was now looking to his right, toward an open doorway.

As Dominic and the other turned to look, there stood Rab Streambattle, Brand Irondam, and Garla Canopyskimmer. Dominic smiled, walking over and hugging the three. "Am I ever glad to see you three together! What's the occasion?"

Rab grinned. "I'm actually doing a quest for my father! He asked me and my team to go reclaim the dragon orb of truth from the citadel of an evil wallaby warlord! We had stopped in Klondike to see about picking up a mage and a thief. The fellowship can't operate successfully at half strength, you know."

Brand nuzzled his nose and whiskers on Dominic's face, muttering, "I hate cities. But I like you, Dominic."

Garla smiled, kissing Dominic's forehead. "I had wondered why Okali had said that I'd see you again soon. Now I know why. Okali is never wrong. And I am so happy to see you."

Dominic explained to them what had happened to him, what he was trying to accomplish, this time, and about Ares' interference. Then, Dominic introduced his team to the fellowship.

Garla and Jonie drew themselves aside and had a very private discussion.

Soon, Wastrel the Rune Mage entered the throne room and smiled when he saw Dominic. "Is this old adventurers week or something?" He winked.

What hit the throne room next was what might be called a disaster. A male skunk clad in a mismatch of loud coloured patterns of color dashed into their midst, played his lute, sang a ridiculous song about himself, then, as he was bowing, all manner of personal belongings fell out of his cloak's sleeves, into a pile on the floor. Some of which belonged to Dominic's party!

Rab tapped his foot, growling, "Arturo! What did I say about stealing from friends?"

Duffy smiled and greeted everyone as they arrived. Though he was surprised to see humans with camera equipment accompanying the group, he didn't complain. He could see that they weren't filming, at the moment. He guided everyone into the large cabin and made sure everyone got some centaur wine and sweet tarts. Once all the 'uniques' were inside the cabin, safely out of sight, Sallee took a poised position with her back facing the distant ocean and began taping another segment.

While Sallee did this, Jago and Ren spoke with Duffy inside the cabin, reassuring him about Sallee Tanner. Of course, when the name "Tanner" was mentioned, Duffy became extremely friendly, willing to help out however he could. Evidently, Jansen Tanner had made an enormous impression on Duffy years before. Jago found that information comforting.

Later that night, Jago, Sallee, Casey, Emilion, Damon, Gotaki and Ren all sat at the campfire outside of the cabin, while the others slept inside the cabin. Hogan was in Jago's pocket.

Casey smiled to Ren. "How did the first centaur come into being?"

Ren chuckled and laughed a little. "My, you certainly broke the ice, didn't you? Well, the first centaur... that story always differs, depending upon which centaur or god you ask. Are you wanting my rendition?"

Casey nodded his head.

Ren smiled, inhaling a slow breath. "Very well. Now, this is how centaurs came to be, according to what I was told, which may or may not be true. As I said, the story differs depending upon who gets asked..."

Ren exclaimed, "Many eons ago, when the gods were young and actually dwelled upon the Earth, throughout the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, the father god, Zeus, did own a herd of the most beautiful stallions and mares that any mortal could lay eyes upon. One day, a young human shepherd boy witnessed bad people, adult human males, harrassing and capturing one of the prize stallions. The boy quickly ran to the closest god he could find, in this case Hermes, and told him what he had seen. Hermes thanked the boy and asked for his name, which was Skerit (pronounced SKEE-RIGHT), then Hermes dashed off to inform Zeus of the event. Zeus and Hera were lounging in some hot springs when Hermes found them, and Zeus immediately took action."

Ren then said, "Both Zeus and Hera saw the men trying to master the stallion, and were outraged. Hera offered to punish the men, and Zeus complied, for he realized that Hera had a very clever way of dealing with mortal men. Hera cursed the three men with very slow transformations. The man holding the ropes was cursed to become a weasel. The man trying to ride the stallion was cursed to become a quail. The third man, who was heard asking his friends to not harm the stallion, was cursed to become a stallion himself, to join the herd. The third man had a little compassion, and Hera had used the best curses on the other two men."

Ren smiled. "Zeus, Hera and Hermes then confronted Skerit, and thanked him again for alerting them to the crime. When asked what he wanted for a reward, Skerit simply replied, that he enjoyed shepherding the god's flocks, though having the strength of a horse and the capabilities of a man (a human, that is) would certainly help against the wolves in the surrounding mountains. Skerit then exclaimed, that simply serving the gods was reward enough. Then, Skerit returned to his duties of watching the flocks."

Ren took a drink of his wine, then continued. "The gods gathered and met, that night, to discuss how to best reward young Skerit, who had not really asked for anything more than he had, but did ask for something that did not exist, as yet. It was Athena and Pan, together, who constructed the idea for the perfect reward. A new species that was part horse, from the neck-base down, and part human, from the waist upwards. The human's ears would be like that of a horse, rather than like that of a human, and he'd have a mane of long hair, much like a horse."

Ren grinned, then continued. "Athena and Pan then explained that most humans were bull-minded and most horses were more knowledgeable than any other species. Thus, Pan exclaimed, a knowledgeable horse crossed with a bullish man created a Kentauros. The other gods and goddesses liked the wisdom or sensibility of the word "Kentauros", and Zeus agreed that it would be granted to young Skerit. So, while Skerit slept, Zeus transformed Skerit from the waist down into the most strappingly handsome stallion that a man could dream of, and Hera imbued Skerit with the immortality and eternalness of the gods."

Ren smiled and wrapped up his tale, saying, "When Skerit awoke and saw his new body, he was frightened, at first. Then, Athena and Pan explained to Skerit what had been done, by the decision of Zeus and the others, and helped to train and educate Skerit into the centaur that we all know him to be today. Skerit lives on several islands, but can usually be found, with Pan, in the wild woodlands of Egidius Island. Though Skerrit, as he is called today, attends every Taurean Gathering, so, your best chance of meeting him, is there."

Damon clapped his hands. "Well told, Ren. Like a bard of olde. I am sure Skerrit will be pleased that his story has been retold to newcomers."

Jago smiled, and hugged Ren. "Thank you for telling us about Skerrit. I rather enjoyed it. It gives me some more video game ideas..."

Ren grinned and pulled Jago close and kissed Jago on the mouth, for about a minute, before releasing him and winking. "There is certainly more to centaurs than what I have told you, but it grows late and we must travel in the morning. I know you'll love the Gathering."

Sallee then asked, "About how far away are we now in days journey time?"

Ren replied, looking to Sallee, "About a day and a half... providing we can get across the river at the shallow crossing. If we cannot, then we'll have to add a day to the trip."

Jago grinned. "We'll get everyone across, even if I have to carry everyone, myself."

Back at the mansion, Dominic was feeling tickled. "Arturo was cute. Although I do feel sorry for Rab for hiring him. Not my responsibility, thank goodness."

Damian smiled. "Where is our next stop?"

Richard had just finished making sure he had all of his stuff back. "I shouldn't be surprised, but that skunk was thorough. Yes, where are we heading next?"

Shane grinned. "If I recall correctly, it's the Greek Isles, unless there is a reason we shouldn't go."

Dominic, who had been sitting at his desk with his laptop, replied, "Yes, it's the Greek Isles. But... Jago also went to the Greek Isles. He went to one of Circe's Islands to pick up Ren for the Centaur Gathering. I don't want to pop in on Jago and make him feel like I'm checking up on him, therefore, I've sent an email to my favorite minotaur, Hieronymos Pollux, also known as Hierux14, and am awaiting a response. He works for a Greek Island Surveyance company."

Richard asked, "His name means 'sacred crown', doesn't it?"

Dominic smiled. "Yes, it does. I think Hieronymos would like you, Richard."

While they were waiting, Devyn and the resident minotaur of the mansion, Evin Thain, walked into the office/den. Evin served those awaiting some coffee.

Richard smiled, asking, "Thank you. I'm Richard. Who are you?"

Evin replied, "I am Evin Thain from the Cretian Labyrinth. I am receiving an outer world education here at Dominic's mansion. Are you one of Dominic's new companions? You don't look like an animal or a myth."

Shane giggled. "No, but he wallows with the horses and cattle, same as I do!"

Richard blushed at that statement. "You be quiet, Shane... or I'll tell everyone about the Shane's woman, that I am sure everyone wants to know about!"

Evin straightened up with a smile. "Yes, I can see that you are the White Mage's brother. For only you could say such things and live to tell the tale." Evin shook Richard's hand, kissing it, then he departed the office/den.

Richard was still blushing, as Devyn said, "Aw... I think Evin likes you, Richard. And I can see why." Devyn winked at Richard, before he, too, departed for other areas in the mansion.

Damian laughed. "Better you than me, Richard."

Shane grinned. "As long as Richard isn't mounted, I think he'll be just fine."

Dominic chuckled. "All humor aside, guys, I just received a reply from Hieronymos. He says that he'd love to see me again. He also tells me that Romulus, the sea wolf, is no longer with us. He passed away several months ago. I will miss Romulus; he was a good sea wolf."

Shane sighed. "I'm sorry to hear that, Dominic. I know how much you love and care about those you encounter in the world. How shall we honor your friend?"

Dominic blinked his eyes at Shane's suggestion. "I hadn't thought about it. A sea wolf's life is a solitary one. What could we possibly give to his memory? He told me once that there were only 15 sea wolves left in the world. And now... only 14."

Richard hummed. "What if you were to offer sanctuary to the remaining sea wolves? Well, not here at the mansion, of course... there's no sea water here... but still..."

Dominic then smiled, as he was reading further along the email. "My other friend, Giles the satyr... he wants to see me again. And he realizes that seeing me can't be done on Egidius, therefore, he's willing to join Hieronymos on either Chiron's Island, or on the isle of Ramses the goat and Faunus, Vaunyai Island, to meet with us. And he'll have his sweet bread with him and plenty of wine."

Damian smiled. "Giles sounds like a nice guy. Are we going there now?"

Dominic nodded his head. "Yes, we are. We can go now." And with that, Dominic, Damian, Jonie, Richard and Shane walked through the stone archway leading to the Chess headquarters in Athens, Greece. Although there was some activity going on there, the next step was in Dominic's opening of the shimmering air gateway that led to Vaunyai Island, a place only Dominic had been before.

At the island itself, Dominic was surprised to see Pegasus with the awaiting Hieronymos and Giles. Also present, were Artemis, Poseidon, and Zeus.

Dominic blinked his eyes, as he bowed to the gods. "I did not expect to see you people again. May I inquire as to what the occasion is?"

Zeus exclaimed, "Pegasus wanted to meet with you, Dominic. And as you well know, we guard him furiously. We are also aware of what Ares is doing. It angers me that he is targeting you, yet again. I wish he'd get a hobby."

Shane exclaimed, "Zing!" Then he grinned. "Oh darn! My wish granting power doesn't effect gods!"

Everyone laughed!

After the introductions, Artemis and Shane went for a walk. Dominic visited with Giles for a bit, then sat down to talk with the others. Giles turned his attention to Damian, who happened to be a young male like himself. Poseidon then walked off with Jonie, while Richard, Dominic, Hieronymos, and Zeus sat around Pegasus. Richard was in awe of Pegasus, and it showed.

Early the next morning, everyone in Jago's party was up and underway again. They spent a good part of the day hiking through centaur territory. Then, they came to the river, and much to their disappointment, the waters were running high along the banks. It was obviously not shallow at the shallow crossing point. A quick discussion began to discuss the problem.

Sallee asked, "And where is the next crossing point?"

Ren replied, "About a day and a half upstream at a public highway's river bridge."

Jago sighed, "We can't chance that. Too many humans might see your centaur and satyr friends. Particularly... the humans who would love to catch and examine you... then, I'd have an angry Circe breathing down my neck..."

Gotaki hummed aloud, then said, "There is a chance we can cross right here, but it will take some effort and some well placed arrow shots."

Everyone turned to look at Gotaki.

Jago asked, "What do you mean?"

Gotaki replied, "We'll need Hogan's help and Ren's composite long bow, some arrows, and two lengthy, yet sturdy, strands of rope. We tie a rope to an arrow, have Hogan hang on to the arrow as Ren fires the arrow across the river into the ground near that tree on the left." Gotaki pointed it out. "Hogan then wraps the arrow and rope around that tree and awaits Ren to fire the second arrow and rope across, where Hogan will tie it around the tree on the right. Once he has them both secured, I'll tightrope walk across and make sure the ropes are tightly secured, while Hogan rests. You guys will secure the ropes on this side to this and that tree." Gotaki indicated the two trees on their side. "We are effectively building an emergency bridge similar to the bridges that we in the Furry Realms would build. Building the actual bridge will take a few hours, but compared to a day and a half's walking upstream, I think that this effort is well worth the trouble. And... this gives Hogan a chance to _earn_ his humanity."

Hogan perked up in Jago's shirt pocket. "I'll do it! I can do this, Jago! I want to! Please?"

Jago hummed. "You might get hurt when riding the arrow, Hogan. Are you sure you want to chance that?"

Hogan smiled and replied, "I may never get another chance to help you guys. I want to do it."

Jago nodded his head, and said, "Okay. Let's get started."

They spent the better part of the afternoon building the bridge, but eventually, it was completed, just as night was falling. Ren and the other centaurs and satyrs crossed the bridge, and they made camp on the other side. Due to Gotaki's idea and Hogan's aid, they were across.

Sometime during the earliest part of the darkest morn, Hogan sat on a tree branch nibbling on an acorn. He couldn't eat normal food, like the others, and sighed as he sat stuck in a chipmunk's body. But it wasn't really all that bad. Circe had made sure that he never aged while in the chipmunk's body, so while it was a punishment, it was likely he could be released as the same age he was transformed at.

Here he sat, eating the acorn quietly.

Just then, something made him look up and outward, into the darkness. Then, during the next few moments, the campsite was immediately overrun with the humans that Circe had warned Jago about. It was a surprise attack, and worse, they came across the same bridge that Gotaki and the others had just built. Everyone was surprised and captured.

Everyone except Hogan. They hadn't noticed the chipmunk. And this could very well be the end of his chances of ever being human again... unless... he somehow got some help for Jago and the others... and Hogan wanted to be human again, badly...

Hogan skirted the tree and set off toward the Taurean Gathering site. Hogan knew who he had to get... he just hoped that they'd listen to him. He wasn't a centaur himself; just a talking chipmunk who was once human and under a punishment. But he couldn't just sit by and do nothing.

By mid morning, Hogan laid eyes on several armed centaurs. He bounded forward and up on one of their backs. "Please pardon my intrusion, noble centaurs! Ren of the Northen Herd and those he traveled with, are in trouble! They need divine help immediately! Please hurry!"

Hogan was out of breath after uttering those words and was pleased when a larger centaur and a satyr friend arrived in response to his message.

It was Skerrit and Pan.

The two took Hogan with them and hurried back down the mountain toward the river, where they saw that Hogan's words were true. They knew full well who Hogan was and were pleased that he had not lied and had acted without provocation to summon help.

There was an immediate fight and during a crazy moment of arrow shots, Hogan leaped into the path of an arrow meant for Jago! The sniper ended up with a large throwing star protruding from his face. Then, the fight ended and Jago and Damon worked fast to save Hogan's life.

Jago said to Gotaki, "You're a priestess, Gotaki. Please do something for him."

Gotaki glanced over that way and asked, "Why should I? He has a chance to die a hero."

Jago suddenly growled, "BECAUSE I PROMISED TO KEEP HIM ALIVE! NOW YOU GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE AND SAVE HIS LIFE RIGHT NOW!!"

Gotaki was taken aback by the growl and got right to work on keeping Hogan alive.

After bidding farewell to their mythic and divine friends in the Mediterranean, Dominic and his team were once again back at the mansion. It was Shane who now asked, "Where's our next stop, Dominic?"

Dominic didn't reply right away. Instead he whistled pretty loudly.

Almost immediately, Devyn came bounding into the office/den! "I am always so glad to see you, Master Dominic. What can I do for you?"

Dominic scritched Devyn on the head, then asked, "Do you miss your pack brothers any, old chum?"

Devyn pulled away from the scritching hand. "You're going to send me away, aren't you?"

Dominic sighed. "No, Devyn. I'm not. But our next stop is in Agassia. Your home continent. My team needs to go to Agassia. It's safe, now, thankfully, as opposed to how it was in the old days. I wanted to know if you wanted to come along with the team this time."

Devyn replied, "As long as I have your promise that you aren't going to leave me there, then the answer is yes. I want to come along."

Dominic smiled. "I promise not to leave you there, Devyn. Who'd protect my bedroom if you weren't around?" Dominic winked with a grin.

Devyn grinned. "Anyone that you've slept with, I'd imagine. Though the best choice is Damon."

Shane giggled. "Damon's quite the horse, I'll give him that! And a good cook! And he likes the same beers that I do, too!"

Dominic smiled. "In that case, let's head off to the flying continent of Agassia. I'm kind of curious about what Ares has done there."

Within moments, Dominic, Damian, Jonie, Richard, Shane and Devyn were on the capital sky island of Agassia. And Dominic wasn't surprised to see the welcoming comittee, or rather, what appeared to be a lynching squad. It was Devyn who stepped forward, standing between Dominic and his friends, and the government demons.

Devyn exclaimed, "What sort of greeting is this? My master, the human who figured out how to release Agassia from it's imprisonment in the Infinitum, returns because he is worried about Agassia's welfare. Has a human like warrior in a toga and armor appeared upon our fair continent within the last few hours to days and caused trouble?"

The imperial Agassian Council Member stepped forward. "Please forgive us, Lord Dominic. The way you were dressed and because the good General Kestnorath was not with you, we couldn't be entirely sure. You were fortunate to bring your Fifth Circle Beast with you. Yes, the warrior that your beast described was indeed here recently."

Dominic's next few choice exclaimed explicitives were not flowery at all. In fact, what he said actually impressed the Agassian diplomats for they smiled afterward. Dominic then sighed, as he tried to calm himself down.

At about that moment, a large demon feline humanoid suddenly picked up Dominic and hugged him!

Dominic was about to go ballistic, until he realized that it was Lord Gonzalowyn. He then smiled and petted the kitty which produced an enthusiastic purring sound.

Dominic was then set down upon his feet as Gonzalowyn exclaimed, "I am ever glad to see you alive and well, Dominic. Without you, I'd be dead and this continent would still be imprisoned."

Dominic smiled. "All true, my friend." Dominic then turned to the council demons. "What did Ares do while he was here?"

The Council Demon replied, "He tried to invoke a magical disease upon our people but he could not know that all magicka in Agassia is controlled by the council. Therefore, he cast this spell and it struck himself. He got angry as he looked violently sick at that point and then, he teleported away, saying something about the North Pole."

Dominic growled. "HE BETTER NOT!!! I won't tolerate any of my holiday friends being harmed!"

Richard whispered to Shane, "Holiday friends?"

Shane whispered back, "Santa Claus, the groundhog, Cupid, and the Easter Bunnies."

Richard said, "Oh. I guess that's where we're heading next, isn't it?"

Shane nodded his head. "Now you know how crazy it gets around the Vanlyone mansion."

Richard whispered, "No wonder Dominic's all the time calling you to come do things for him."

Devyn had evidently took off during the whispering, but he was back at Dominic's side by the time the whispering had ended. And he wasn't alone. There was a second Fifth Circle Beast standing there with him. The second beast was slightly smaller and looked almost like a preteen.

Dominic then turned to his party members. "Okay, we're heading to the North Pole, guys, after a brief stop at the mansion to drop off the beast hounds. If anyone needs a bathroom break, that's the time to do it. Otherwise, we'll head onward and you'll get the see Christmas Town."

Richard smiled. "We're with you, Dominic. Besides, I can't wait to meet Donder. As a kid, he always appealed to me as being the cutest reindeer."

At that point, Dominic slyly smiled, then he burst out laughing! Richard arched an eye, as he glanced over at his brother Shane.

Jago felt ill after he had growled and remained quiet for the rest of the trip. He had lost his temper with the one wolf-morph he really liked.

Gotaki.

Jago was relieved when they reached the Taurean Gathering. He took up a private and solitary residence in a tent by himself.

Of course, Jago hadn't been the only one to lose their temper. The bad guys had destroyed ALL of Sallee's film footage she had shot, and she was taking out her frustration by repeatedly kicking these guys in the nuts, even though they were tied up and blindfolded.

Jago sat there in his tent sulking for a better part of the day.

Then, a hand rested on his shoulder and asked in a very familiar voice, "Is it really all that bad, Jago Fox?"

Jago turned his head slowly and looked over his shoulder.

Jansen Tanner stood there wearing his Chess Master uniform.

Jago asked, "What are you doing here?"

Jansen smiled, "I'm this year's English foxtaur escort. They specifically asked for me, by name. Skerrit and Pan told me what happened. Personally, I don't think you did anything wrong. Hogan deserves to be human again. I think Gotaki said what she said in the heat of being in battle-mode. She's a lot calmer now, but she's more worried about you."

Jago sighed, "I lost my temper and yelled at her. I didn't mean to, but when she asked, why should she help, I totally lost it... She's asking about me?"

Jansen nodded his head. "Actually, yes. I may not be Dominic, but if Dominic chose you as a companion, you must have some honor and loyalty in that body of yours, somewhere. Now, come on... Gotaki doesn't look pretty standing out there all alone... and Hogan and I had a talk earlier, too. I offered him a job in Chess, once he gets his human body back, that is."

Jago arched an eye. "Why would you want to hire him? He tried to kill you."

Jansen grinned. "He's the only human who's ever tried to kill me. All the rest are supernatural in origin. And besides, Hogan has some respectable skills. He told me that a werewolf maimed his younger brother several years ago, and that's why he swore to hunt and kill all werewolves. But, doing further questioning, he revealed that it was a rogue werewolf that had done the deed, and with some minor investigations, I was able to track down the pack that werewolf was in and report it to Baron Gott'schlecht. I've promised Hogan a more proper justice against the werewolf and the pack that caused his brother the harm."

Jago smiled a little. "Um... I was starting to like Hogan... regardless of what he'd done before..."

Jansen smiled and helped Jago to his feet. "Hogan has led a misunderstood life. Now that the truth has been revealed, I am going to help Hogan obtain the final justice against that rogue werewolf in a court of good werewolves. I think Hogan was surprised that Chess had so many connections. But... if you like Hogan so much, maybe I can tag you up with Hogan's younger brother. You see, Hogan didn't wait around, originally, to see if his brother would live through his injuries. Blake Slade is recovering at the were-sanctuary near Las Vegas. If you want, I can give you an authorized reference to meet with the owner of the sanctuary."

Jago hummed. "Blake Slade... I'd like to meet him, after the Taurean Gathering ends... I have to make sure Ren makes it home, and make sure Circe restores Hogan to a human. And just so you know, Hogan promised me that when he becomes human again, he'll never touch another gun, nor will he ever try to kill you again."

Jansen smiled. "I didn't know that, but am glad to know it now. And I'll make certain you know if he breaks his word, but he may have to use a gun again. Chess agents are assigned guns, for self-defense. Though I am the only Chess Master who doesn't use a gun."

Jago blinked his eyes. "You're the Chess Master? But... but... you were wearing a White Bishop jacket when you told Dominic the truth about himself..."

Jansen grinned. "I wore what I wanted the people in Rocky Falls to see. I've been a Chess Master for about a year. My former employer wanted to retire and he was very tired of my doing things 'the Tanner way', so he called me up and flat offered the position to me. I took it."

Jago grinned. "Your sisters will kill you when they find out."

Jansen grinned again. "Not if they don't find out."

Suddenly, Sallee's voice said, "A little late for that, Jansen!"

Jansen turned and saw Sallee standing here. "What is _she_ doing here? The biggest blabbermouth in Rocky Falls!"

Sallee growled a little and tackled Jansen, wrestling him!

Jago got out of the way, and left the tent, giggling. He was glad to be out of there.

Gotaki saw a smiling Jago approaching her and she hugged Jago tightly, kissing him deeply on the mouth. Jago mmmmmm'ed into the kiss and was glad when Gotaki let him up for air.

Gotaki said, "I'm sorry I said what I said, Jago."

Jago smiled. "I think we're both sorry. Want to take a walk with me?"

In Christmas Town, Dominic and company were pleased that Ares had not seemed to have visited that location, regardless of what he may have told the Agassians. While there, Dominic chatted with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. Shane volunteered to clean the sleigh runners. Jonie and Damian stood up on the catwalk of the toy shop watching the elves make Christmas toys.

Richard followed the directions that Dominic had given him for Lustre's Pride and Dominic hadn't told him what Lustre's Pride was, of course. When Richard walked into the tavern lodge, he saw two buck reindeer clashing their antlers against each other in one section of the chamber. At the main bar, Donder and Lustre watched the participants with smiles.

Richard approached the bar. "Ahem. Excuse me but I'm looking for my reindeer hero, Donder."

Donder and Lustre turned to look at Richard.

Lustre chuckled. "How about that, Donder? You're a hero now!"

Donder smiled, as he stepped close to Richard. "Richard Wayne. I've heard about you. I'm Donder. I can't believe you came to see me. Want to go for a walk?"

Three hours later, Dominic and the others were gathered once again for their next stop. Dominic asked, "Anyone seen Richard?"

At that moment, Donder came leaping over one of the buildings and Richard was riding on his back. Both looked pretty happy. Donder came to a stop, as Richard dismounted and hugged Donder's neck. Donder smiled. "Thank you for coming to see me, Richard. You've made me feel super special. I'll cherish your time here forever."

Richard smiled. "Just remember that to me, you're a hero and you'll never do wrong. Come see me anytime." Richard let Donder go, as he stood arose and faced Dominic. "I ought to belt you for not telling me that Donder was gay. But... he's an okay guy. He's still my hero."

Dominic nodded his head. "While all of you were having fun, Santa verified that the other Holiday myths were A-OK. So, our next stop is in Shillong, India. Gharanti Khan contacted me to let me know that Ares is there right now. We have a chance to catch him if we hurry."

Shane arched an eye. "Wait a minute... Isn't India close to the Golden Yak's territory?"

Dominic grinned. "Yes, it is. Gharanti Khan is contacting the Yak as we speak. You see, we're not the only ones who have a bone to pick with Ares."

Santa exclaimed, "Good luck, all of you. I know you'll catch that rascal yet."

Dominic nodded his head. "Thank you for the confidence, Santa. Let me know, later, if you need anything. Come on, guys. To India." And Dominic's party stepped close to him, as he activated the summoning scroll that was provided to him by Gharanti Khan, causing the team to teleport.

As the team appeared near the Tibet-India border, they came upon a battle scene between almost every special faction of both regions, and Ares himself!

Dominic shouted, "There he is!" And he pulled his sword and joined the battle against Ares!

Shane and Richard pulled out their high powered rifles, firing them at Ares, while Jonie and Damian joined Gharanti Khan behind his magical barrier, assisting the Rakshasa Mage from that angle.

The Golden Yak exclaimed, "Good to see you, Dominic! Can't you control your arch enemies?"

Dominic parried a sword strike, as he replied, "It's not my fault that Ares is on P.M.S.!"

Ares growled at Dominic, "You'll PAY for that remark!" And Ares struck Dominic's sword with such a blow that caused Dominic's sword to fly aside from him, out of his grasp.

Dominic exclaimed, "This isn't good!"

Ares grinned, as began the death arc slash! "And now you die!!!"

Except the blow suddenly struck the chest armor of something that suddenly just appeared between Ares and Dominic... causing Ares sword to shatter into a million fragments!

It was the biggest Balrog ever seen.

Dominic exclaimed, "Who the...?"

The Balrog power punched Ares in the jaw, sending him flying across the Tibetian border!

At this point, the Golden Yak took control and dropped a mountain on top of Ares!!

Shane, who had retrieved Dominic's sword, handed it, hilt-first, to Dominic. "Try not to lose this again, buddy boy."

Dominic slowly stood up, as the Balrog turned to face him. "Um, thank you... I think..."

The Balrog replied in a very deep and mysterious voice, "I just saved your life, Dominic Vanlyone. According to protocol, you now owe me a favor. I will return another time to collect this debt. At that time, you had better be ready for me." He then turned to leave. "I am called Lord Voidstrike. Remember that name, ally." And with that, the Balrog was gone.

Richard blinked his eyes. "That... that was... a balrog..."

Dominic released a slow breath of air. "He could have killed me with a thought. A balrog isn't something that you ignore. I should feel privileged to have such an ally as he. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about Ares for awhile. Come, let's go check in on two of my husbands."

Like the Tranquility Moonrise festival, the Taurean Gathering continued to receive more arrivals of various species. Festivals of this sort always interested Jago because it gave him a chance to see what all actually existed. Of course there were many varied types of classic centaurs here, Jago also noticed others.

Like the vulpetaurs that Jansen had escorted, for example. They looked highly playful, though acutely aware of their surroundings.

The equitaurs and zebrataurs were next to be noticed. Jago often respected how majestic the equines were, and these were no different. They seemed to be engaged in constructing the archery and spear-throwing tournament ranges.

There were a few mephitaurs wearing University of Florida jackets. These french skunks were handling the food preparations for the gathering.

A group of cervitaurs were building something that looked like a performing stage, under the guidance of a very impressive, godly, stag-like centaur. Jago surmised that the god was Cervus, huntsman god of Celtic mythology. But what could the stage be for?

Several guardian wolftaurs guarded the perimeter of the Taurean Gathering itself. A few nodded to Jago as he passed, and a few even winked at him. Jago waved in return as he and Gotaki walked by.

A Japanese ratar, a man-sized rat centaur, sat on a nearby overlook, quietly communing with nature. He nodded his head to Jago and Gotaki, politely, then resumed his meditation.

Some racotaur (raccoon) blacksmiths were doing repairs on equipment, as well as selling their wares to those gathered. The wares consisted of useful items that centaurs would have a hard time acquiring elsewhere. Their craftsmanship and quality looked excellent.

Jago next saw two groups of leotaur and tygritaur warriors arm-wrestling between two freshly digusting cowpies. Jago eww'ed a little, thinking that it certainly gave one a better incentive toward winning. Who'd want their paw thrust into that?

The final group that Jago and Gotaki noticed were a mixture, as well. The cowpies had to have come from someone, and sure enough, there were four bucentaurs (bulls and cows) grazing in a grassy field, while nearby, a few Assyrian faemousetaur priests spoke with the Golden Yak and Valerian Mouse. Jago waved at those gathered, but didn't want to interupt any discussions involving mages and priests.

Valerian noticed Jago and walked over to him. "Greetings. You look a lot like Andros Fox. Are you related in some way?"

Jago blushed a little, nodding his head. "Andros is my cousin. I've often wondered how he was doing. I'm Jago Fox and this is Gotaki Riverclaw."

Valerian lowered his gaze and sighed. "He is well, I suppose... as is his mate, Felix Ocean."

Jago arched an eye at Valerian. "Is something wrong?"

Valerian closed his eyes for a moment, then reopened them. "I haven't seen them since they moved out of the Mystic Citadel. It was a few years after they got me to change them into furries. I had just returned from an outing with a traveling carnival. I suppose they got what they wanted out of me, then developed a need to live elsewhere. Aside from the Golden Yak, Kwy-saugi Raeyu, and the other lycanthropes, the citadel hasn't held much happiness nor hope for me. I often find myself journeying around the world helping the Yak and Raeyu on various missions, though often, getting nothing in return. I sometimes feel like everyone I care about grows to hate me, or even, despise me..."

Jago oh'ed. "I'm sorry. When you saw me, you thought I might've been Andros' son. Is that it?"

Valerian nodded his head slowly.

Jago glanced over at Gotaki, then back at Valerian. "I...I don't know what to tell you, Valerian. I am sure that everyone doesn't hate you. Maybe... maybe... you should think about settling down and getting married. Surely you've considered that, haven't you?"

Valerian sighed again and replied, "Like King Lion, I know very few women. Those I do know have already wed long ago. And those who are single... do not care about me... in as much as those words."

Gotaki arched an eye. "Why did you call Dominic 'King Lion' just now? I thought I was the only one who called him that?"

Valerian eyed Gotaki, then replied, "I know that King Lion is trying to find himself. His search will be futile, until he confronts the roots of his ancient Egyptian heritage. For you see, I knew who King Lion was before he was summoned to be Jansen's twin. It is very difficult to hide such things from an archmage. The Golden Yak mentioned such to me the first time she laid eyes on him."

Jago huh'ed? "So who is Dominic really?"

Valerian glanced over at the Golden Yak, then back at Jago again. "King Lion's real name is Rhaun Bastian Sekanutoth, whose name means, warrior-lion-who-shines-and-protects-knowledge, though most Egyptians would know him under the name of Anhur, the leonine god of war."

Jago and Gotaki blinked their eyes! Jago exclaimed, "Wait a minute! How can Dominic be Anhur? Dominic has no godly powers... does he?"

Valerian grinned. "Damon said it best: death is never the end in life."

Dominic's group soon arrived in the Gry'foso Clan's encampment, and as before, they were confronted by two very fierce gryphons. One challenged, "Are you a meal or an enemy?"

Dominic replied, "Is this how the consort of Lord Varan Gry'foso is greeted? I come for a visit and I am challenged?" Dominic set a smile and a wink to the gryphons.

The challenging gryphon suddenly hugged Dominic, licked his face, then said, "Hello father. Lord Varan seemed to know that you were in the region. And now, here you are."

Dominic smiled, hugging back. "So you are one of my sons. I am pleased to meet you. You've grown so powerfully. I am impressed. Where is Varan?"

The gryphon son said, "Where else?" He winked. "Who are your companions? As you know, humans are generally not welcome in our clan territory. But you are an exception. And because they are with you, this fact alone preserves them from being torn apart and fed to our young."

Dominic grinned. "If you attacked the Waynes, Jo Tanner would likely show up and then the clan would be in trouble, for sure." Then, Dominic introduced the others to the gryphons.

Soon afterward, the team was standing before Varan Gry'foso, who was mounting a female gryphon in full view of those watching.

Dominic openly remarked, "Caught in the act with your claws in the dope jar. I hope she's not better than I was or I might have to get jealous."

Varan tilted his beak at Dominic. "The one time I really get a chance to sow my wild seed and you choose to show up on time. Why are there other humans in my nest?"

Dominic laughed. "You haven't changed a bit. They are my teammates, this time. We had to fight an enemy in your region, thus why some of us are armed and armored. And because I remember my mates, I chose to introduce them to you. If you'd rather we left... we can do that."

Varan was swift with his claw, as Dominic found his left leg securely held tight! "Like I am going to LET you leave without your spending some time with me! As for the rest of you, because my consort has spoken for you, you are honoured guests here in the clan. You may use the time to see the sights. My sons will escort you where ever you like in our territory, and you will not find yourselves abandoned at any time." Varan resumed his sexual act with the female gryphon while firmly holding on to Dominic's leg.

Richard and Shane both grinned, as they headed off with the gryphon sons. Jonie was being escorted by a male gryphon who was infatuated with her company. Damian decided to spend his time with the Gry'foso Historian, which turned out to be a very old gryphon who knew more than most gryphons would ever know. The entire visit to the Gry'foso Clan territory lasted a bit longer that Richard had expected, but evidently, Dominic's arrival was a cause to show guests the right amount of attention.

By the time Dominic was allowed to rejoin his team, he looked like he had been roughed up and smelled like he needed a bath. And how! Fortunately, no one said anything as they headed through the clan gateway, emerging directly into the Vanlyone mansion. It was only then that Richard said, "No offense Dominic, but you need a hot shower. I don't know what Varan did to you, but you reek worse than a hot day on the ranch. By the way, why did those two gryphons come back with us?" Richard was indicating two large male gryphons who had come through the stone portal with the team.

Dominic grinned. "Varan and I... well, consumated our union. Leave it at that. And you're right. I do need to take a hot shower. As for those two gryphons, they are my oldest sons through my union with Varan. They were both old enough to make their own decisions, so they chose to come home with me, to learn how the other half lives. Damon is going to flip." Dominic headed off for his private chambers where a hot bath could be had.

The two gryphon sons, Jaran and Doso, eagerly wandered around the mansion, being escorted by Shane, who luckily knew the mansion better than anyone.

Eventually, Dominic rejoined the others, looking and smelling normally again. "Okay guys, it's time to go see my Tanuki mate now. The Tah'nuki Clan where I was mated to a guard named Zaruk'tahni. Luckily, there are no children through this union. Again, humans are not normally permitted there, but I have special clout there. So they'll permit us to visit them, as long as we don't try to humiliate them. And absolutely no pictures. They're pretty strict about that part. If there are no questions, we can head over there right now. Thank goodness for stone gateway portals."

Damian grinned. "Good thing Sallee is off with Jago then, isn't it?"

Everyone laughed, then they headed through the Tah'nuki Clan portal, arriving on the plateau where the clan gate had been placed. It was, of course, a fantastic view.

Soon, the team was sitting at a banquet table, where they were being treated to an enormous meal and the finest drink, as well as, entertainment.

Zaruk'tahni sat with Dominic and the others, as a quiet soak in the clan's hot springs spa was had by all. The clan were striving to make the teams' stay a good one.

However, it was soon time to move on, and after a warm hug between Tanuki and team members, Dominic led his friends back to the mansion. Dominic reached into his belt pouch and pulled out the Thalugolon Dragon Ring. "Okay guys, our next stop is the hidden flying island of Thalugolos, where I am an adoptive member of the royal dragon family of..." and he took a breath at this point before continuing. "...Emperor Vrakmaz, who is an esteemed father, great ruler of Thalugolos, teacher of knowledge, trainer of skills, he who is called a friend."

Richard exclaimed, "A dragon emperor? Shouldn't we bring him a gift?"

Shane laughed. "You mean us tying up Dominic and tying a big bow ribbon on his naked body?"

Chipmunk life. Hogan looked at the bandage on his furry chest. He thought, What was I thinking? A small chipmunk like me thinking that I could prevent Jago Fox from being sniped? Instead, I about lost my own life. He sighed, as he looked around to see where all the others were.

Suddenly, right in the line of his sight... Circe appeared!

Circe was wearing the outfit of a circus ringmaster instead of her usual beautiful dress. Circe walked over to where Hogan sat, and kneeled to look at him. "Hello Hogan Slade. A scar of war?"

Hogan sighed and shrugged. "I suppose you came to take me back to the island, didn't you?"

Circe petted Hogan's head, then stood back up again. "Heroes don't receive rewards by continuing to be punished, Hogan. You won't ever have to return to the island again. If you'll excuse me, I need to go check on my consort, Ren." Circe turned and walked away.

Hogan was surprised by that statement. Even more surprised that Circe was simply walking away. Then, the pains of transformation hit him! Circe had set a delayed reaction on Hogan, giving her time to turn her back. Hogan grew in size, as his fur receded into his skin, his head hair regrew, his muzzle receded into his face. He felt his legs reshaping, as well as his arms, hands, and feet. He could feel the tail also receding into his tailbone, and his manhood reforming into the shape that it had once beheld. Hogan lay on the ground, heavily panting, and naked. He was no longer a chipmunk.

He had done it.

Hogan had earned his humanity back. He slowly lifted his head, as he noticed that the scar remained on his chest. A reminder of the deed that had helped restore him. That's when he noticed Damon standing there.

Damon smiled and handed Hogan a full body robe. "It's temporary, but will aid you in keeping you decent. How does it feel to be human again?"

Hogan put on the robe and tied the robe's sash around his waist. "How does it feel? Part of me wants to jump for joy... but another part... feels like something is missing. I feel like I've been living in a shadow of my real life. Is this normal?"

Damon patted Hogan's shoulder. "Very normal. Come, you must be hungry. For real food, not forest critter food."

Hogan grinned. "Yeah! I'm starved! Real food at last!"

Damon escorted Hogan over to the feasting tables, helping Hogan get a good assortment of food and drink. As Damon and Hogan filled a plate, Circe stood quietly at a distance. Circe pondered if she should tell Hogan the truth. She knew that Hogan had earned a second chance at human living. Circe shook her head. Hogan would not learn that his older self was slain by Dominic.

Sallee had new cameras and equipment, provided by Jansen, of course. Although Jansen was no where to be seen, Sallee, Casey and Emilion were walking around shooting new footage.

Ren and Circe had joined Jago and Gotaki on their walk.

Jago smiled. "So you restored Hogan to his human form? That's great! What will you do with the men who threatened Ren's life?"

Circe replied, "When you hunt after creatures of myth, you are judged by the myth laws and the gods. The matter is out of my hands. Skerrit and Pan have claimed dibs on the punishment to be given, and they know to make the punishments appropriate, or I will return to have a hand in the process of laws."

Gotaki asked, "Can't we just drop them into a volcano?"

Circe giggled girlishly. "I like how you think, Gotaki... but no, we can't. It's out of our hands. The gods will decide what will happen to them."

Ren hugged Jago suddenly. "I never did properly thank you for getting us here, Jago."

Jago grinned. "Well, it was either get you here or learn to bray."

Circe laughed. "Jago, that threat was shallow at best."

Jago hummed. "Whatever happened with your carnival? You never mentioned it since you showed up here."

Circe grinned. "We parked it at Valerian's Mystic Citadel. It's not open, currently. Once this gathering is over with, we'll move on and open somewhere else."

Gotaki asked, "And what of the citizen's group that was harrassing your sisters?"

Circe smiled. "I solved that issue pretty easily. I told them that they could explore the whole carnival, thoroughly, and if they could find any of the missing people there, I'd permanently close down the carnival. They conducted their search, and we never saw them again."

Circe winked.

Jago hummed. "But you did end up with more animals, didn't you?"

Circe shrugged her shoulders. "Who's to say that the existing animals didn't just have babies or something? I don't keep track of people who enter my carnival."

Suddenly, from somewhere across the gathering grounds, a horrific sound of thunder shattered the silence!

Ares stood there in the midst of the gathering wearing his full battle armor, with his sword held at the ready. He immediately started looking around his immediate area.

Circe, Jansen, Pan and Skerrit all converged on Ares at about the same time.

Circe said, "What are you doing here, Ares? You don't look like a centaur!"

Ares growled, "Very funny, Circe! Now where is he? And don't you dare say that you don't know who I am talking about!"

Jansen exclaimed, "Ares, old boy... Dominic simply isn't here. Or have you forgotten that he and I simply look alike. But the trip shouldn't be a total loss. Why don't you enlighten us on what the stupid twit has done this time."

Pan grinned. "Jansen has a point, Ares. Have some wine and tell us a story on what Dominic has done this time. We all know how much trouble he can be."

Skerrit fetched Ares a goblet of wine, then awaited patiently for the explanation.

Ares took a slow refreshing draught, then said, "Dominic and that dratted Golden Yak dropped a mountain on top of me over in Tibet. I almost didn't get out from under it."

Jansen arched an eye. "Dropped a mountain on you? I somehow cannot see Dominic doing that. But as sorry as it sounds, you were in the Golden Yak's home territory without her permission. You're lucky to be alive, Ares. But what made you think that Dominic would come here?"

Ares grinned. "He attended this event last year, and it was closer for him to come here, than it would be for him to go all the way back to Missouri. So, I was checking here first."

Circe grinned. "At least you didn't get vorpally severed, this time. I would think that you would be getting tired of having that happen to you."

Ares chuckled. "You would think I'd learn to leave him alone, but I just can't. There is something about him that just raises the hackles on the back of my neck, forcing me to hunt him down and attack him."

Just then, Jago and Gotaki came over to where Ares and the others were.

Jago said, "I'd say that which is making you hunt Dominic down is that Dominic isn't normal. He's a god, like you are... a god of war. An Egyptian god of war." Jago winked.

Ares arched an eye! "Dominic is really Anhur? No wonder he entices me to attack him so often. Gods of war often find it hard to resist the challenges of testing their skills."

Jago nodded his head. "Yeah, that's who Dominic really is. He isn't around, but the dratted Yak is..."

Thalugolos had not changed a bit, but what had changed was the fact that House of Valaru Endenmal was a lot bigger than Dominic had first thought. "Vrakmaz built all of this for me? Surely I didn't impress him this much?"

At that moment, a large dragon of both ruby and ebony entered the chamber carrying a large tome. "Dominic? It is you!" It was Professor Andros Kontaro, the former human turned dragon. "The Emperor will be pleased to see you. You look as if you're on a quest or something."

Dominic exclaimed, "Kontaro, it is good to see you again. Yes, we've been fighting against Ares while I've been trying to refind myself. I recently learned that I wasn't who I thought I was, and the only clue I was given from a friend was to revisit all of those who I've ever met in my life's journeys in and around the mansion. We've been doing this in order, and now... we're here in Thalugolos. Where are my brother Palarnabal and my adoptive father, the Emperor Vrakmaz, today?"

Kontaro grinned. "They are training hatchling flyers today. Some of them remind me of you, Dominic. I hope you don't mind that I've been living here in your dragon home. Vrakmaz suggested that it was probably better for me to stay here during my studies. This whole experience is a dream come true and I have you to thank for all of this."

Dominic and his team were escorted to the platform where Vrakmaz and Palarnabal were training the hatchling flyers. Dominic smiled, as he exclaimed, "You call that flying? I've seen drakes do better! And they're not even dragons!"

Vrakmaz turned to glare at the owner of the voice, but when he saw Dominic, he grinned largely and replied, "Ah, my adventuring son of the world... Valaru Endenmal, or he who is called Dominic. I am pleased to see you. Have you really seen drakes fly better?"

Dominic grinned. "That's for me to know and for your hatchlings to wonder about. At any rate, it was intended to be an insult to their abilities. Surely even a hatchling can out fly a drake." Dominic then introduced his teammates to Vrakmaz and Palarnabal. The rest of the day was spent training. That evening, after Dominic had used the Dragon Ring to change into Valaru Eldenmal, the team sat at yet another banquet table interlaid with exotic foods.

After listening to Dominic's tale, Emperor Vrakmaz frowned. "I am sorry to hear that your past is not what you believed it to be. But answers are often found where you had begun your journeys from, though that is neither here nor there. Where will you be traveling to next, my son?"

Dominic as Valaru replied, "My next stop is within the realm of the Spacer Furs. I have a gateway portal on the Spacer homeworld and I am sure that Clip Therin will be pleased to see Shane and I again. The rest of my team are new, so they'll likely be subjected to the 'shot' that my last team were given."

Palarnabal smiled. "You've been to so many interesting places, Dominic. Alas... I only know this island, as well as the pavillion in your back yard."

Dominic and his team were soon heading through the portals between the House of Eldenmal and the Vanlyone Stablehouse, then once inside the mansion, between the Chamber of Portals and the Space Academy on Planet Zophuris, the home base of the Caspian Dream. Dominic was surprised to emerge upon a scene between warriors of the furry space authority and an angeline female, who appeared to be an elven female with beautiful white feathered wings. Though at the moment, she was holding her own quite well against the space authority.

That is, until Dominic and his team intervened from the Portal Chamber, with swords and weapons at the ready. The angeline was prepared to fight her way past them, when a sudden glow from Damian stopped her in her tracks. The angeline turned to Damian and asked, "Are thou the Cardinal Voice?"

Damian replied, "I am. Who seeks words with the Cardinal Voice?"

Suddenly, Captain Fenris, an anthropomorphic wolf stepped forward, through the crowd of furry space authority. "She is called Princess Halix of the Angeline People, though in truth, she has no true royalty to claim. She been quite the pawful, let me tell you. She has a problem with authorized law enforcers. My men were trying to have her locked up. We apologize if our ruckus brought unrest to your wing of the Space Academy."

Dominic smiled. "Fenris... since when do you speak like a old stuffed shirt? Or have you already forgotten our last outing together against the Py-Ratt homeworld for the recovery of the Crystal Chalice?"

Fenris laughed! "Dominic Vanlyone! I didn't recognize you in that nobly armored outfit! Why are you dressed for war?"

Dominic grinned. "My team and I were revisiting everyone who we had visited before. I am on another quest... this time, to refind myself."

Fenris grinned. "But you're right there!"

Damian focused on Princess Helix. "You can trust me. My name is Damian. Why are you causing these people so much trouble?"

Princess Helix replied, "My brother was kidnapped by a Py-Ratt Overlord who thinks my brother can unlock the stargate that leads to... you... the Cardinal Voice. The space authority think that I am lying because the Angeline people are... smugglers and small time bandits. But I am not lying. I thought that if I could find you myself, you could help me get my brother back."

Damian asked, "Where is this overlord, at this moment?"

Princess Helix replied, "He's trying to find the Cardinal Voice on Earth."

Damian glanced at Dominic. "Well, I think I know what our next mission is going to be..."

As it is often said, time flies when you're having fun. And the taur gathering was no different. Several days later, the festivities came to an end, and Jago and Gotaki, and the others, escorted their friends back to their homes. Soon, it was only Circe, Ren, Ares, Damon, Gotaki, Jago, Sallee, Casey and Emilion. Skerrit and Pan had tagged along for the ride.

The group was on Circe's Hidden Island. Casey and Emilion were posing for a sculpting session with Ren. Hogan had joined Jansen Tanner, when Jansen departed with the foxtaurs of England. The others were gathered in one of Circe's many dens.

Circe said, "Ren told me about your little project, Sallee. I am greatly disappointed that you didn't tell me before now. I should change you into something as a punishment, but like Ares, I don't want any Tanners showing up on my island to look for you."

Sallee grinned. "Oh come on... Jo isn't THAT bad!"

Ares muttered, "Oh yes she is."

Gotaki whispered at Ares, "Shush."

Circe then continued. "Your intentions, while not meant to cause harm, are simply impossible. As you could tell from those who captured your traveling party and who had destroyed your camera equipment, the world simply isn't ready to accept centaurs as an equal race. Even if you're ready to accept them; the world isn't. That's what Chess and Psi are for, after all."

Sallee pouted. "But that's just not fair! My viewers enjoy all the weird stuff I report on! And before you interrupt, when I say weird, I mean what's weird for my viewers. I often enjoy being around all the fantastic beings and species that Dominic and Jansen often deal with." Sallee winked. "It's a Tanner thing."

Circe hummed. "I'll make you a deal, Sallee. I'll allow you to report on some fantastic species and beings, provided that you add a warning to every episode that these beings and creatures are under Chess' and Psi's protection, and any harm intentionally done to those documented, will incur the wrath of those organizations upon them, with full legal proceedings. The truth of the matter will be that the gods and others of power will take whatever actions necessary."

Ares grinned. "Well said, Circe."

Sallee smiled. "It's a deal, Circe. So, may I refilm the segments I need that I had previously done on your island?"

Circe nodded her head. "...providing that I steer you away from areas that I wouldn't want anyone to get trapped in..." Circe winked.

Gotaki grinned, then leaned over, placing her head in Jago's lap, her eyes closed.

Damon chuckled and winked at Jago.

Soon, Dominic and his friends, plus Princess Helix, who was now with the party, stepped through the portal from the Space Academy, to the Mansion, and then, through the next portal into the Cavern of Chronos, the Lord of Time.

Richard asked, "Where is this, Dominic?"

Shane recognized the place immediately. "We're in the Cavern of Time... Chronos' home. I had forgotten that this was the next stop on Dominic's refinding journey. Normally, an invitation is needed to come here, but Dominic has special permission, I think..."

At that moment, the titan lord of time stepped into view just ahead of the team. "Welcome Dominic and friends. I have been expecting you. For what boon do you seek from me, this day?"

Dominic replied, "I am on a quest and a journey to refind myself. Because I know I cannot flatly ask you who I really am, I must ask if you knew who I was, originally."

Chronos was quiet a moment, perhaps to weigh his words. "Let us say that I knew who you were before Jansen Tanner pulled that sneaky move. But nothing in time is beyond my notice. The only advice I can give you now, is to speak again to he who sent you to speak to the Cardinal Spirits, then return home to reflect upon the truths that will surely come to you."

Dominic hummed, remembering how cryptic Chronos could be. "Thank you, Lord Chronos. I will do as you say." Dominic then turned to his team. "It's time to return to Katahnuk Kennison, the werelion demigod. And I think he'll know we're coming, this time. I think he's known all along who I was before Jansen tried to have me created. Come on, guys. We're heading to Africa."

Jonie exclaimed, "So you're saying that this whole trip was a wild goose chase?"

Dominic replied, "In a way, and the wild goose is Lord Kennison. Just remember not to give your names to the werelions, unless you wish to be caught up in a, what I would call, an embarrassing werelion custom. That goes doubly for you, Richard. Etiquette and manners be damned, if you know what's good for you."

Shane grinned. "Not that I wouldn't pay to see my brother have to stick his nose into a werelion's groin!"

Richard made a face and swatted Shane! "Thanks for the warning!"

Damian said, "I've already been there once, but I too was kept quiet during the visit, which is a shame because some of the werelions looked like they'd make good companions."

Princess Helix said, "Perhaps I should remain behind in one of your many rooms, Lord Vanlyone."

Dominic nodded his head. "That might be a good idea. We don't want the werelions to get the wrong idea about you."

Soon, after a brief stop at the mansion, the team was soon standing before Lord Katahnuk. Dominic was none too happy with the demigod, as Dominic had his magical sword at the ready, pointed at the werelion's chest. "You knew from the start who I was! And you sent me off on that stupid quest! I ought to run you through this second! Give me a good reason why I shouldn't!"

Katahnuk's captains growled on the sidelines, but their lord silenced them with a wave of his paw. "Dominic has the right to be upset. Besides, I am in no danger from the agent of the white stag. Dominic cannot do anything that will make his lord look bad."

Dominic shoved the point of the sword into Katahnuk's chest. "Could it be that you really don't know? The white stag released me from his service about a month ago, when he had a vision that I was going to die permanently! I am no longer the agent of the white stag! Nor am I the Cardinal Voice! And if I am not Dominic Vanlyone... then who am I? Someone knows! And I was for sure that you" and at this point, he made sure Katahnuk felt the sword even more. "knew who I was! I want answers! And I want them NOW!"

Katahnuk flinched under the magical blade, whose very fabric was a mixture of many minerals and metals, as he felt the magic of the blade actually harming him.

At that point, Katahnuk's son came forward from his personal chamber and said, "King Lion... please spare my father for sending you away on a journey. If you spare his life, you may end mine instead."

Without removing the sword, Dominic turned his gaze to the lionboy. "Why am I called King Lion? What does it mean to werelions, such as yourselves? If you want me to spare your father's life, tell me what I seek to know. I am tired of getting the run around."

The lionboy sighed. "I do not know what you seek to know. No one among our people knows the answer to your question. However, I have the gift of prophecy... and though I am forbidden to use it even to save my father's life... know you this, King Lion. Obey Lord Chronos' command. What was it he told you to do? His exact words. In this, you have your answer. And now, because I have used my power, my life is forfeit." He then pulled an ebony dagger out of his belt.

At that second, Richard, who had been quietly observing the whole mess, tackled the lionboy and wrest the ebony dagger away from the lionboy. "Are you crazy? Sure, give your father a reason to fight back against Dominic by ending your life with a stupid stunt! I wouldn't let my kids do something like this and by damned if I'll let someone else's son do it neither!"

Dominic removed his sword from Katahnuk's chest. "Chronos told me to come here... then to go home and reflect upon the truth that would come to me. But what truth is that?"

Katahnuk replied, "Know that you are King Lion and that in that name, there is a truth you have not thought about, as yet. I did not defend myself because you are my superior, Dominic. When you finally learn of yourself, return to me and we will meditate on the wrongs that we both have committed."

A few days later, Sallee, with Casey and Emilion, Gotaki, Damon and Jago were transported back to the Vanlyone mansion in Rocky Falls, Missouri. Sallee was full of glee, as she led her two camera men out of the mansion, off toward the TV station!

As Jago, Damon and Gotaki entered the kitchen, they saw Reed, Artemis, Jonie, and Dominic, sitting around the kitchen table.

Reed said, "'ello mates. Ah see yas made it 'ome. Pull up a chair. We're trying ta cheer up Dominic. 'is trip was a flop."

Jago said, "Oh... I'm sorry to hear that... and I know why... You see... we accidentally found out who Dominic was during the Taurean Gathering."

Dominic lifted his head from the table, looking expectant. "What did you find out, Jago? Tell me."

Gotaki said, "Patience, King Lion. Let Jago catch his breath..."

Jago smiled at Gotaki and snugged her. Then, Jago sat down and continued. "We ran into Valerian Mouse and the Golden Yak. They told us some interesting things about you."

Just then, Ares entered the kitchen. Dominic about went defensive, but Artemis stopped him. Ares came over and stood with Damon and Gotaki, saying nothing. This surprised Dominic.

Jago said, "Ares isn't here to fight you, Dominic. He's here to verify what I am about to tell you. He, too, heard what was told to us. It explained some things that was happening in his life. Settle down... you'll be excited soon enough."

Dominic nodded his head and sat down once again. "I'm listening."

Jago said, "The reason Ares was continually drawn to you, to challenge you time and time again, is also the reason you tried to find out who you were before you became Dominic."

Artemis arched an eye, saying, "Quit dancing around the bush, Jago. What is it?"

Ares spoke up. "Dear sister... Jago is being cautious. Provoking a god..." Ares indicated Dominic with a nod of his head. "...is risky business, as well you know."

Artemis sat back in her chair and stared at Dominic! "Dominic is a god?!"

Dominic was also forced back in his chair. "Me? But... but..."

Jago smiled. "Dominic... there is a reason you are King Lion... your true name is Rhaun Bastian Sekanutoth, whose name means, warrior-lion-who-shines-and-protects-knowledge, though most Egyptians would call you... Anhur, the leonine god of war."

Dominic, Reed, Jonie, and Artemis acted surprised and shocked!

Within the office/den where many an adventure had begun, Dominic found himself sitting at his desk... doing something that he hadn't done in all the years he lived in the mansion.

He was drinking a glass of whiskey.

Back in the kitchen, Ares said to Artemis, "Are we going to leave Dominic like that? He's more confused now than he was before his journey. Perhaps he should never have been told."

Artemis sighed. "Dear brother... I cannot abandon Dominic to this life. He needs someone now. That is why I am going to stay here and help him. Besides... his time has passed. What more of life does he have now?"

Suddenly, at the kitchen door, Jo, Sallee, and Leia Tanner entered the room.

Jo said, "Just about when I was starting to think Dominic was finally going to be at ease, this happens! What's wrong with you gods? Do you think this is a game or something?"

Leia added, "After all he's been through, you had BETTER be there for him, Artemis!"

Ares snapped at the two. "It's not Artemis' fault! We Greek gods are not to blame this time! We had no idea that Dominic was really Anhur! Besides, I didn't see YOU TWO helping Dominic find out who he really was!"

At that moment, there came a brilliant sunburst flash in the middle of the kitchen.

It was Ra. "That's enough. All of you. Have the divinities fallen so low that you seek to argue needlessly among mortals? Dominic is Anhur. Tonight, he will drink. Tomorrow, Damon will feed him coffee, even if he has to force feed it to him. Then later, we get to plan ways of killing Cassander Vulcan, I mean..." He grinned. "we get to reinstate Dominic's powers."

Jo grinned. She couldn't help it.

Back in the office/den, Damon quietly entered and sat down next to Dominic, hugging him. "Long have we lived in the shadow of our former selves, Dominic. I have never known you to drink. It saddens me to see you do this now."

Dominic sighed. "I am not Dominic. I am Anhur. Or rather, Rhaun Bastian Sekanutoth. Tomorrow is another day, I suppose. King Lion my ass..."

The night passed and on the following morning, Dominic, Damian, Jago, Jonie, and Reed were sitting around the kitchen table for breakfast, when Princess Helix walked in.

Damon exclaimed, "Hey! Who's she?"

Then, Linux the werefox came into the room, still wearing his pajamas. "Morning everyone."

Damon gave Dominic a hard glare. "Dominic! You are def-" And at that point, Dominic pulled a laminated card out of his business suit pocket and held it in front of Damon's face. The card read, Zookeeper's License, along with a date, and authentication signatures. "Wow. You actually have one." Everyone then laughed.
