It was Tuesday, July 31, 2001.

Troy Baines was standing in a position of attention in front of the FDNY Volunteer Firefighter Training Academy in New York City, New York, waiting for his name to be called to get his official certification to extinguish the city's fires and save the lives of those in need. He could not have been more proud as he stood in line with his allies, each of them wearing identical blue suits of dress. His feet were squared away at his proud, broad shoulders, pointing outward roughly forty-five degrees and his hands were clasped lightly beside his legs. His face was set like a rock and his eyes remained ever attentive on his the Head Chief. He heard his name called and went up onto the stage, taking his certificate into one of his hands while using the other to grasp the hand of the head fireman. Their hands gripped the others firmly and the two met eyes, causing Troy to let a faint smile crawl across his lips, and after a moment, the two released and Troy walked across the wooden platform to his spot in the new line that had formed. Watching felicitously in the crowd, were Troy's most prized loved ones, his girlfriend, Kiara and their beautiful baby girl, Hailey. Troy glanced at them, moving only his chocolate brown eyes and smiled then turned his attention back to the front. There were a few more names called and then after the last graduate took his place in line, the head chief took the podium, clasping each of his large, dark hands onto opposing sides.

"Citizens of New York," he began, his tenor toned voice rolling cleanly into the microphone, "on behalf of the Firemen's Board, I present you, the FDNY Academy graduating Class of 2001," the Chief stated proudly and firemen cheered happily, including Troy.

The audience cheered as well, rising from their little metal chairs and applauding them enthusiastically. The graduating class was then dismissed and Troy walked over to his family and kissed his beautiful girlfriend, running one of his hands beneath her silky, blonde hair, and slowly stroking her soft, fair toned neck. After the passage of a few moments, the pair separated and Troy stared deeply into her shiny, oceanic eyes.

"Hey honey," Troy said as he wrapped one of his hands about her waist, slipping his hand beneath their little girl, of whom Kiara had rested on her hip, "hey babe," she said, kissing him.

Troy smiled and playfully ruffled little Hailey's long, blonde hair. Hailey was the spitting image of her mother, possessing the same hair and cute dimples on each side of her mouth. The only difference that the two had between them was the color of their eyes, Hailey possessing the brown color of her father.

"Look how big you gotten Hailey," Troy said to his daughter, scooping her up into his arms and throwing her a short distance into the air before catching her again and bringing her into his chest. She squealed and giggled as Troy put his hat on her head. The hat, of course, was too big for her little head and it fell into her eyes, causing a broad smile to overcome Troy's features.

"She's so beautiful, Kiara," he said with a smile to his girlfriend as he lifted the hat out of Hailey's eyes.

"We did good," she mused and lightly kissed his cheek.

Troy smiled.

"Well, what do you say you let the new fireman treat you two lovely young ladies to a special meal tonight?" he offered to them, "one that I came up with while I was here."

She smiled and nodded as Troy shouldered Hailey and then began to walk to their car. As Troy approached their grey sedan, he set Hailey down and opened up the door to the back seat, smiling as she clambered inside and sat herself down in her booster seat. Troy closed the door softly as Kiara opened the far door and leaned inside, fastening their daughter's seatbelt and then got into the passenger side of the car. Troy smiled, checked his daughter with a quick glance over his shoulder, and then backed out of their parking spot, stopped the car, engaged the drive, and drove home.

Later on that night, Troy was making dinner, one of which Kiara nor could Hailey identify, for they had never seen such an obscene meal before. All they did know was that it smelled really good. Kiara and Hailey waited for the meal to be ready, waiting at the table, Kiara watching her boyfriend while little Hailey kicked her dangling feet beneath the table. It wasn't very much longer before Troy finished cooking his meal and turned off the stovetop. He opened up the cabinet to the right of the wall-mounted microwave, and produced three plates, one for himself and the others for his family. He set the plates on the counter beside the stove and scooped several items onto the plates, producing a rather meager sized portion for Hailey; for he knew that she did not eat very much. He took two plates and balanced the third on his forearm and then walked across the kitchen to the table, carefully setting a plate in front of each of them.

"Deep fried chicken with mashed potatoes, broccoli and gravy," Troy said with a smile as he sat himself down in a chair across from Kiara.

The two girls looked at the food, admiring it.

"Eat up" Troy said as he took a fork into his hand.

Kiara leaned over to Hailey's plate and began to cut her meal into tiny pieces, for Hailey was still much too young to do it herself, and her plastic knife wouldn't cut it anyhow. After she finished, she instructed Hailey to eat and then took her drumstick into her hands. She blew on the hot item and then bit into it, her mouth instantly exploding with flavor.

"What do you think honey?" Troy asked her, wiping his mouth with a napkin.

"It's very delicious babe," Kiara replied with a smile.

"Thank you," Troy smiled and continued to eat.

After a while, when everyone was finished and the table was clean and the dishes were done, Troy laid Hailey into bed and went back to Kiara, who was sitting out on the front patio having some wine. Troy quietly shut the door behind him and arrived at her side, pouring a glass of his own. Kiara smiled at him as he sat himself down in a rocking chair beside her.

"Congratulations honey," she said to him proudly.

"Thanks Babe," Troy answered and set his glass down on the wooden deck, wrapping an arm around her shoulder and pulling her close.

Kiara slid in close to his body and rested her head comfortably on Troy's shoulder, closing her eyes lightly. He smiled down at her and then turned his gaze up to the starry, New York sky, staring up at the World Trade Center that erected dominantly from the skylines in the distance, gazing at the pair of towers with lights that almost reached the sky. Though he saw it nearly every day, it never failed to amaze him, for he knew what those buildings represented.

"Such a majestic and beautiful sight," Kiara said to him, also looking at across at Downtown Manhattan, staring at the lights that laminated from the city and bounced off of the clouds in the sky, giving it the appearance of Alaska's famous Aura Borealis.

Troy nodded in agreement and looked down at her at her.

"Hun...?" Troy asked.

She turned to face him.

"Yes Sweetie?" she replied in a soft tone.

"I love you," Troy whispered.

Kiara smiled and snuggled closer to him, nuzzling her face into his chest.

"I love you too," she answered softly.

Troy smiled broadly at her, the lights of the city reflecting in his eyes, and she smiled back, holding the gaze for a moment before she closed her eyes happily, enjoying the quality time that she was spending with her boyfriend. He smiled softly and kept her close, never wanting to let her go. She wrapped her arms around his waist and pulled him close with a big smile on her candy lips. He smiled bigger and rubbed her sides gently. She kissed moved her head up and kissed his cheek gently with a big smile on her face, in turn causing him to grin as well. She pulled away from him and stared into his eyes and he smiled back as he laid her down on her back, kissing her lips deeply. She smiled with the kiss and wrapped her arms around his waist as they kissed romantically under the beautiful New York starry skyline.
