#7 of Kiss of Destiny

Later that evening, after they had returned from the rather fruitless search for Mittens' other body, Bolt and Mittens were curled up in front of the fireplace. There was no fire in the grate, but the tile radiated the heat gathered during the day.

Bolt was fretting, understandably. But, unfortunately, he could not yet know that she was at his side. Mittens/Jodie turned her head to look at the fluffy white German Shepherd, sporting a look of mixed sympathy and amusement. She spotted faint red streaks in the fur under his eyes, telltale signs that he was crying.

She nudged him softly, drawing his attention away from his thoughts. He hurriedly wiped his eyes with his paw, trying to hide his tears.

"What's up?" he said shakily, trying to keep command of his emotions.

Mittens smiled softly at him. Her new face assumed the sweetest look Bolt had ever seen, one that could not help making him smile. He smiled back at her, probing her eyes with his own.

"You have beautiful eyes," he said. He leaned sideways and traced his muzzle along the side of hers. His nose was cold and wet, as befitting any healthy dog.

Fortunately, her thick fur hid her bright red blush from Bolt's view. She hid her eyes, trying not to start crying herself.

After a minute, she turned back to look at him. He was smiling sweetly.

Seized by a sudden urge, Mittens leaned forward. Bolt did the same, both of them closing their eyes as their noses met and their lips caressed each other.

How long their kiss lasted, neither of them could have said. But the simple contact sent shivers down their spines. The air was full of powerful energy, energy waiting to be tapped with the simplest of gestures or words.

The kiss was broken abruptly by the sound of a slamming door. Both canines' heads whipped around towards the front door, spotting Penny stalking through. Her jacket was unzipped, revealing the distinct shape of a handgun holstered at her waist.

Bolt and Mittens looked at each other. They had never seen Penny carry a gun before.

Without a word, Bolt stood and followed his person into the kitchen. Mittens was content to stay there and wait for his return, though she couldn't help but wonder why the sweet girl that petted her ears was carrying such a dangerous item with her.

"Bolt, no," said Penny as she tried to fend off the affections of her dog.

Bolt didn't stop, preferring to instead start attacking her shoelaces in an attempt to get some attention.

"Stop it, Bolt," she said again, nudging him away with her foot.

Bolt barked at her several times, then reared up and pawed at her hand.

"Damn it, Bolt, I said NO!"

Bolt's ears flicked back and stayed there. His tail drooped and he averted his eyes from Penny. She had never shouted at him like that, nor sworn at him. He didn't look back at her as he slunk out of the kitchen on his belly.

Mittens had heard Penny scream at him and was standing just on the other side of the swinging door that seperated kitchen from dining room.

Her ears folded back. He looked dejected.

"Jodie?" Bolt said softly.

She stepped closer and nudged him with her snout to show him she was there.

Instead of speaking, Bolt looked her in the eyes and kissed her again.

She was taken entirely by surprise, but accepted the sudden kiss without any complaint. Bolt's paw reached up to caress her cheek, stroking her short, thick fur.

Her fur tingled. The intimate contact was sending sparks down her spine and into the long disused parts of her body.

The kiss continued for a few more moments, before Bolt broke it. He looked deep into her vivid green eyes and made a subtle movement of his head to signal that they should go upstairs.

Mittens grinned. It was working!
