Time is Water

By Seb

The gray wolf with gold eyes that was small for her kind lifted a gloved paw from the rains of the ostrich like mount she was ridging called an emok. Keeping a firm grip on the rains with the other hand and grasped the small brass cross hanging from a gold chain off her neck. Suddenly a pale blue paw metalized on her shoulder the wolf flinched from its icy touch but did not fear it saying out loud "you know I hate when you do that to me. And I am not the master here." A cool voice that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at the same time answerd the wolf "well if my ....masseter can be starled by her lowly servent then I am in deep trouble." The voice was that of the frost demon Seberith and the wolf's name was Avalon the next in his long line of masters. But she was by far the most interesting to the demon. Avalon pulled her mount off to the side of the road and dismounted taking of her gloves. The only other jewelry was a small silver ring with a pale blue stone. The wolf ripped the ring off and throwing it angrily at the ground "Seb get out her now." She yelled but was lucky this was not a well-traveled road and she was alone or she could seem crazy. Seberith's voice came from the stone again but still seeming to echo all around the wolf "but it's summer and it's nice an cozy in here plus what do I get if I do? Another lecture on how you are the boss? No thank you I'll just stay in my ring and sleep for the rest of the trip." Avalon threw her arms up wildly, Seberith had been acting strange lately. They had got this mission from the council to go to a small town where people are disapearing mostly after having a few drinks at the local tavern. Avalon thinking over what Seb had said sighed to herself, "what do you want?" Seberith laughed saying "I want," pausing for dramatics, "you to tell me more of your past. We have been partners for more than a year and you don't let me in your mind even though it would make us stronger, you keep me out. And all you ever do is make me go on missions and when we aren't on missions you make me train." The wolf looked around and almost screamed Seberith had been on and on about this for ages and it was starting to make her insane to the point of just banishing him and this time it seemed like he was not going to let up. Avalon had already made up her mind but she wanted to make Seberith pay a little so she paced back and forth mumbled to herself incoherently and after about a minuet of this and no reaction from Seberith that she could tale she gave up, "fine I'll tell you one story from my past. But you have to ride with me and stay out of the ring for," smiling and pausing for dramatic effect, "for the rest of this mission." Seberith sighed and said "ok you win but take a lesson from this I am like water, all I need is time and I can do anything" the small ring stared to melt on the ground but as soon as it had turned from a ring into a small puddle then started to change to mist till there was a large frosty cloud that was the size of the wolf and the mist stated to compress its self into a form and soon standing there was a bunny the about five feet eight inches with his ears laid back flat against his head, his fur was smooth like water and the colour of his fur was a light blue. He had on a black cloak that reached all the way down to his feet making him look like a pillar of shadow. But the most distinguishing feature was not his fur or clock but his eyes the pupils where red like fire and they seemed to glow even in the daylight. Seberith look around and said "I'll need a mount if we are to make it on time priested." Seberith knew he could just summon one up but he found it funny when the wolf got mad which she did easily. The priest look around and sighed getting to the point where she would just banish Seb and not have to worry about him anymore, "summon your own mount. I'm not waiting for you." Avalon put her gloves back on and jumps on her mount taking off without a backward glance. Seberith chuckled to himself and waved his hand making an image of a black Emok appear. He climbed up onto the bird in a sweeping motion and kicked his mount to into a fast run to catch up to Avalon. Caching up after a while and waiting a few moments of silence Seberith asked "so tell me my story." The wolf looked off to the side away from Sederith the looked back grinning like she had just found a new toy said "no not right now." Seberith grins some and looked at Avalon, "ether I'm getting too soft or you have been around me too long. Because that is a loop hole in the deal I should have seen." The priests smiling so wide that it could be seen from miles kicked her bird to go faster calling out "it's only another hour to the town, I'll race you there." Then turning back and trying to make her emok go faster. Seberith not rightly shocked by this kicks his bird into a pace that could only be described as a bat out of hell. Caching up the wolf Seberith turned around in his saddle and lend his back on the emoks neck keeping balance with his legs so when he past the wolf he could see the look on her face calling out to her, "I'll meet you at the tavern" wavering his hand in a mocking jester then like a bullet he was off. Avalon slowed her mount knowing she could not keep up with him and was content to let her mount walk into town which she did in a hour making good time. The first thing she did was not go to the tavern where Seberith would be she needed to check into the commotions office to let them know she was here. And as soon as she walked into the wooden chapel with Wight wall paint she was stun the head commissioner who was a tall fox with bright red fur and piercing blue eyes. He was supposed to brief her but he was on the other side of a room pack with people. She made eye contact across the crowed room to the commissioner. He nodded with his head off to a door where they would be more private. Moving through the mob Avalon made her way pushing and shoving when needed to the door and fallowed the commissioner in. The fox sat behind a small desk with papers through across it the fox smirked "sorry for the mess it's been chaos" Avalon just giving a nod sat down in the chair in front of the desk caching his shingling blue eyes and holding them with her gold "tell me what you have so far?" the fox gulped some then looked down we have been having this problem for the last two months so far fifteen people have gone missing." Avalon interrupted wanting to get strait to the point "what have they been like? Has it been mostly women, children, or men, what are the things that keep happening over and over. And I'll go from there I don't need a hole run down thank you." The fox stunned mostly by this and gathered himself "well most of the time they disappear after levering the tavern closer to midnight or later. There have been no connections between the people missing and it's a whole mix of people from old to young women to men. I have a list of everyone missing and there family and where they can be found." the fox digging around his rat's nest of a desk, Avalon standing and shaking her head "no thank you if I go and start talking to the victims family's I'll start to draw attention to myself and whoever is doing this will get away. But thank you I'll be at the tavern asking around and looking for the next clue." The wolf turned around and walked to the door and stopped before opening it not even turning around "and please don't go around saying that I'm here to catch who's doing it, because news travels fast in small towns. If you're asked just say I'm a traveler." Not waiting for a reply Avalon opened the door and pushed her way out of the church. Once outside the wolf decide to get a better feel of the town and mounted her emok and strolled around till well after dark. Avalon found herself at the tavern just as that late night crowded was going in and what she saw shocked her but did not surprise her at the bar siting there like he was local was Seberith chatting up the barmaids and bartenders looking over his shoulder almost like he know she was staring at him Seberith walked over and invited her to a both in the corner. Seberith had changed his cloths he was now wearing a white cotton shirt with a black leather vest and some rugged pants that had been well worn. Avalon had not changed out of her traveling cloths she still had the brass cross on but her Wight gray dress had seen better days it still had the day's trading dust on it. Sitting down the barmaid asked Seb what he wanted Seberith looks up with a sly smile said "nothing for me but for my companion please get her anything she wants." The barmaid turned to her with a disappointed look as Avalon blushed so red it could be seen through her gray fur. she know Seberith was just teasing her by putting her on the spot but she refuse to let him get that satisfaction. She grind wildly "I'll have the most expense food you have on the mean and also the larger mug of cider you can have apple please." Avalon knows apples where out of season so it would be expensive Seberith did not even blink at her just smiled and waved the water off. Bring his full attention to the small wolf "so I already know what you are going to ask. Can I feel the demons power here?" mocking her voice perfectly. "Well yes and no he's here but his smell is all over the place. But if I had to guess he would be the owner of the bar he smells the most like a demon." Seberith took his time and wait for a response to see if she would notice the pulsing energy around them. He would tell her but he wanted to test her some to see how much she trusted him for his word. Avalon thought on what Seberith had said. It mad séance for it to be the tavern owner but this was to essay, Seberith had to be holding something back for one of his stupide test. Taking a breather "I know your hiding something" trying to call his bluff "but I don't know what I'll give you the count of three." holding up her fingers and counted down she did not even get to two before Seberith held up his hands in mock surrender "ok I'll tell you there is a pulsing energy coming from the ground I think there may be a summing circle located somewhere in the cellar" Avalon standing fast "well we should get down there now" seberith grabbing onto her paw before she rush out of the tavern and piking his ears up something he only did to gain her attention "think if we start a fight here with all these people there would be casualties." Pausing and letting that sink in he countued "but if you want innocents to get hurt I have no problem." The grin returning to his face as Avalon sat back down and her food came out along with her drink. She looked down at a lovely shapers pie and .asked the bar maiden for a second spoon. Returning with the spoon she gave it to the wolf and walk off. Avalon picked it up and pushed the shepherd pie to the middle of the table holding out the spoon for seberith "a last meal......just in case." Seberith grind and accepted the spoon "you know this would make a funny story the priest sharing her last meal with the demon." Avalon taking her first bit "ironic more like it. Can you tell if the demon in strong then you?" seberith look down "I think we are almost matched in power. This will be a close one." Then seberith looked up and smile "so I think I should get my story now." Seberith taking a bit of the pie the wolf sighed and put down her spoon "ok I'll tell you how I joined the order. It happened so long ago I was just a child when're farm was attacked at night my father ran outside to find off the bandits but he was struck down. I ran down stars and hid in are root cellar and locked the door. But that did not stop the sounds of what happened to my mother. When they left I cried myself asleep next to the roots and I remember being cared out of the cellar by the towns people and after that I just stop talking and was sent to the church to live. There you go that's your story will your stop bugging me." Seberith had put down his spoon and was looking down he had done many bad things but that was too much. In the time he had been Avalon's servant he had grown to like her "I'm sorry I did not know I would put you in so much pain having to remember something like that." Seberith said standing up "I'll be back." Seberith walked out the door and outside by this time the late night crowed was trickling out slowly. Seberith walked around the building just trying to get some fresh air. Soundly the world when black he did not even feel himself hit the ground. Seberith opening his eyes and found his head was going to explode from the pain of the poison. A voice précised his thoughts "wake up now." Seberith felt a sharp kick in his side he doubled over and moved to where he was kneeling and then standing. Looking around seberith clinched his fist Avalon was in a small square cage looking at seberith with a pledging face and a red fox with bright blue eyes leaning on the cage holding Avalon. Seberith took a step forward and install felt a shock of pain snarling at the grinning fox. The fox Pointing up to the ceiling seberith looked and saw a demon caching circle carved on the wood above his head he would not be able to move until it was broken. Seberith looked down at Avalon and said "don't worry I'll get you out of this." The fox, laughing now and walking over to the egad of the circle "I don't think so that is unless you can travel to the angles plans." The fox snapped his fingers and Avalon's cage lifted into the air and folded over to a wall with a summoning portal on it the fox walked over and put his hand in the center and he and Avalon stared to glow bright blue. Seberith calling out "I'll come for you don't worry" Avalon looked up and smiled she knew he would come; all he ever needed was time.
