Chapter Six R&R

David Waters woke up in a dark room. He guessed it was the military base in The Oasis. The only part of Mars that took to the terraforming. The air was still dry, like Mars. He moved his arms, though he cut this short, feeling the tubes that were plugged into him, pumping fluids his body desperately needed into him. As his eyes adjusted to the small amount of light coming in from a window to his right. One of the moon's light shone threw to his room. The lights were out, leading David to look around the room for a clock. Panic was beginning to creep up on him. He didn't know where he was, not knowing if he was in the military base or if he had been captured. He kept flashing back to years ago. The smell of torture rooms. The cells they left him in before he was rescued. He shook his head, chasing away the visions in vain. The next thing he knew he was screaming, feeling the saw cutting through the bone of his wing. Men around him, yelling at him, demanding he tell them the passwords for the computers he was transporting. He didn't know. A part of him knew that they didn't care what he told them. He closed his eyes tight, trying to release himself from the restraints. For all he knew, this was no longer a vision, this was happening to him again. He called out The lights went on in the room. Nurses running in with a canine in a lab coat walking towards him. He was back to his senses. He was hyperventilating. A female's voice was telling him to relax. That he was in a safe place. He shook his head, "I.. Sorry, Just a bad dream, that's all." The doctor then said, "Oh, good, he's awake. Welcome back Mr. Waters. How are you feeling?" David was calming down, he said, "Thirsty." He was sat up by the nurses. The doctor nodded, "Anything else?" David shook his head, "No.. I'm fine. Will I be out of here tomorrow?" "You passed out from exhaustion, heat stroke. Spend the week here, you should be fine tomorrow." The doctor yawned, grabbing a syringe from his pocket, "Would you like to be sedated? Might help you sleep." Again David shook his head, "No, I'm fine." The canine nodded and turned around, saying, "Good, I'll send that Jacob guy over here to pick you up in the morning." Then headed out the door, followed by the nurses. The lights went off and David laid back down, trying to relax. Getting a helping hand from the drugs they shot him with behind his back, he fell asleep, dreamless. He awoke hours later, sunlight shining through his window, illuminating the empty, white room. His military clothes were on a chair, cleaned, and stripped of all the medals and equipment. There was a knock on the door, a muffled, voice came through, a hint of country accent, "Hey, I'm comin' in." Before David could respond, the door flung open. A bull, tall, dark furred and heavily muscular walked into the room dressed like a cowboy, followed by a nurse. Jacob was carrying a duffel bag over his shoulder, which he set down on a table next to the window. The nurse unplugged David from the machines and tubes while Jacob put the camouflaged clothes and box of medals into the bag, taking out David's every day clothing saying, "Can't go 'round in army stuff on Mars. Unsafe. Got you somethin' to wear." He set the jeans, shoes and shirt on the table while David stood up, naked under the hospital robe. The nurse left the room, Jacob was standing near the door when David got to his clothes. He looked out the window at the city below. The Oasis, a large lake on Mars, the only place on the planet with sustained life. It was a hot, dry place. David took the robe off, large scars on his back where his wings should be sprouting exposed to the bull, who took this time to say, "Colonel Ferguson is around, thought you might like to know she's looking for you. Wants to know about what you found." "She didn't come with you?" Asked David, getting into his new clothes. The bull sighed, "Nah, been tending to Captain Fletcher til he woke up. He went and crashed on Earth." "I take it he crashed in the area shown on one of the maps I found?" David sighed. "I reckon so. She wouldn't want to speak with you so urgently if he hadn't. Hey, howabout we get something to eat, I bet you're starved half to death." David nodded, trying his shoes, "Yeah, I could do with a meal." Jacob smiled, "Alright, I rented a Jeep, we can store our stuff there." He slung the bag over his shoulder, making a distinct metallic sound. David knew the sound of guns rattling when he heard it. David and Jacob made their way out of the Hospital, David downing a bottle of water a nurse handed to him on their way out. The Jeep was parked near the entrance, the balmy winds and dust blew across the streets. The buildings were dusty, but otherwise well put together. The Oasis was in no way a run down city. It was just subject to the harsh environment. The Jeep was a standard instrument of travel. The cars on Mars were never painted due to the constant sandstorms. Any paint would be stripped away overnight. The cars had a durable colored rubber coating. They were the safest vehicles in the area of the galaxy. Some people would buy from Mars for their children's first cars. With all the dust, A crash was inevitable. Jacob threw the bag into the back seat and jumped into the driver's seat, unlocking the door for David to get in. He started the engine and said, "So, what are ya hungry for?" David shrugged, "Let's get some steak." Jacob looked over at the Hawk, "Sure. I could go for some chicken right about now." He started driving down the street, there was no outside seating at any of the restaurants. It was a collection of various food from all over the local area of the galaxy David smirked, "Nah.. I'm a bit too lean for eating." Jacob laughed, "Yeah, you're right. But hey, Free meal." He parked at one of the first places he saw. A small diner he ate at a day before. The menu had a lot, so he figured he couldn't go wrong. They sat themselves by the window, David stared at the menu while Jacob looked at his cell phone, "Hey, I need to call Ferguson. She really needs to talk to you about the photos and maps you took." David nodded, "Sure, I'll order you a hamburger." "Order me the breakfast plate. No beef." He glared at his friend and walked outside. Leaving David to look over the menu. The Waitress was a young fox. She looked at David, "So, what can I get you, sugar?" David looked at the menu, "I'll get a hamburger, and my friend wanted breakfast, no beef. Can I have some more water?" The vixen wrote down the order and nodded, "New to The Oasis?" "Yeah, visiting on business." Replied David. "What's the business, if you don't mind me asking." "None of yours." Stated David, flatly. The woman backed off, "Alright, didn't mean to pry. I'll have your food in a minute." She then walked off to another table. Something didn't feel right. He scanned the diner. He didn't feel safe. They could all be rebels, they might have found him out. His heart started beating faster. He was feeling panic spread through him. He couldn't breath, everything was getting fuzzy. He was shaking. The cook behind the counter was eyeballing him. All David could think of was that he was caught. There must be a stockpile of weapons in the back room. He didn't stand a chance against them. He felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up at the owner of the hand, startled to find Jacob looking worried, "Are you okay, David? You don't look so hot." David shook his head, "Yeah, Sorry. Just some side effects from the drugs they put me on. I'm fine." Jacob sat back down, "Alright, Maybe some food will fix that." He grinned, "By the way, Ferguson is going to be here in a couple minutes. She's been driving around all day, she said to order her something." David nodded, "I don't really know what to tell her past what she has already seen." "I think she wants to get a team together to go down and poke around. We also need to turn Fletcher's Beacon off. The Mercenary that found him forgot to disable it." He sat up as the waitress came with their drinks and said, "We have another friend joining us. She wanted us to order something for her, if that's okay?" The waitress put the glasses of water down, taking the pad of paper out with her pen, "What'll it be then, fella?" The bull put on a friendly smile and ordered what Ferguson wanted and a coffee for himself. The waitress smiled and walked off again, David eying her suspiciously. They sat there for a few minutes before a human woman walked into the diner. It was Ferguson. David had never seen her in civilian cloths, with her hair down. She looked out of place, but otherwise, very attractive for a human. Dark brown hair that flowed down to her breasts, a stern look on her face. She sat down next to Jacob so she could face David. She looked over her shoulder at the waitress coming with their food, quickly turning to them saying, "For our own safety just call me Alexandria. I'm still your superior, remember that." Then, in an instant, her stern face turned into friendly smile as she greeted the fox and took her food. Alexandria ate in a hurry, almost as fast as David. Jacob was the only one taking the time to enjoy his food. He was only half way through his meal when Alexandria and David were done. Deciding to ignore Jacob, She looked over at the hawk and said, "David, I need to know if you are able to cut your vacation short and go on a top secret mission." David nodded, "Yeah, I feel fine. What do I need to do?" She looked over her shoulder and leaned over to David and whispered, "It's about the maps you found. The dialect is an obscure merchant's language." David whispered back, "Merchants?" She nodded, "We don't know why, I guess no one in military would know it offhand. So they used it." David sighed, "So, we translated it, right?" Alex shook her head, "No one knows it. I've been running around all morning looking for a god damn translator." The waitress came to pick up their food, Jacob had just finished his meal, now only sipping on his coffee as the fox picked up their plates. The fox asked if they wanted dessert. They collectively shook their heads and said, "We're good, thanks." Then were left with the bill. Alexandria paid the bill and they headed outside and into the Jeep. Alex got into the car, "Thank god, I've been on foot all day." David and Jacob got into the car after her, as she inspected the contents of the bag in the back seat with her. Jacob turned to her and said, "So, where are we off to?" "Fueling station. I borrowed a fighter ship from a friend. No one can know we are military. Too many rebels in the area, we wouldn't get close to Earth. My ship is docked and ready for anything." Jacob nodded and set off towards the space docking bay. Getting ready to travel again. David was looking forward to getting out of the city.
