#1 of Family in Feather Ridge

The door slammed and some loud steps came up the stairs before coming the open doorway of young Reggie Jordan. The young seventh grader cringed knowing that he was in trouble when he heard the belt clasp clunk against the wall. Reggie knew the strong, drunken form behind him all too well, and didn't even make a move to run.

"What did you do to my alcohol you fucking brat!" yelled the enraged father as his picked the thin boy up and shook him harshly. "Tell me or I will make sure you regret it!" He said shaking him more before tossing him against the wall with a loud crash. The father stumbled and sat down on the bed glaring at his slumped over son. "You son of a bitch tell me where my vodka is! Why did I ever let your mom keep you" He said getting up and kicking the boy twice in the ribs before leaving the room. The house was filled by the sounds of glass breaking and loud crashes. Reggie's father screaming out loud as he searched for his stash that Reggie had hidden.

The young boy slowly crawled over to his bed his neck hurting along with a painful stabbing sensation in his chest. "Damn it" the boy sighed and turned off the light before laying down in bed. His bruises already were forming from the beating as he wrapped himself in his covers. "I miss you mom but I can't take this anymore" the boy whispered as he cried softly, his tears beading and slowly soaking the blue pillow case. "I need to get away from here. I need to escape somehow! Why did you just leave me with him! Why didn't you say goodbye to me! Why do I have to feel this way!" he whispered closing his eyes. The only time Reggie ever was at peace was in his dreams.

He always saw his beautiful mother; her glorious blue eyes that glistened like sapphires, her long brown hair being blown in the wind. He was five again and they were having a picnic on a grassy hill under a tree. The sun was warm and the ducks swam in a small pond at the base of the hill. He always treasured this dream because he only remembered exact details of his mother's appearance when he was dreaming of her. She smelt so sweet on that day and felt so warm when he hugged her waist. But this time was different, Reggie saw what looked like a black husky sitting next to his mother and him. It wasn't a regular dog though but looked like a human.

"Mommy who is that?" the toddler asked pointing at the well built canine who was leaning back on his paws watching the ducks on the pond.

"That's my good friend" His mom said smiling warmly "His name Bryant and we will be taking care of you now"

The toddler felt the strong furry arms envelop his small body and hug him into the husky's chest. It just felt so good to be hugged by him that the toddler just nuzzled into the fur and fell asleep.

Reggie awoke and muttered to himself. "It felt so real." He slid his finger over his arm trying to imitate how the fur felt against him. This caused him to wince and remember his altercation with his father, but when the boy checked under his shirt there were white gauze bandages over his ribs. "Who...Wait where am I?" Reggie asked now confused as he looked around the room noticing it wasn't his bedroom but a room much nicer. He was sitting on a full size bed and there was another just like it less than 5 feet away. The room was a pale, soothing blue, with a TV and a computer on the desk along the far side wall.

"Dad! Mom! He's awake!" a voice shouted, startling young Reggie even further was the fact the voice came out of a dark grey husky, who seemed to be about his height if not a little taller.

The boy pulled the covers back over him shaking and staring at the husky boy. "Who are you? And where am I!?" Reggie cried.

The husky whimpered seeing his new house guest was afraid. "I'm Scott. Mom has told us a lot about you but we couldn't take you here until your father...." The husky fell short "Well you are safe here. As for where you are, this is our home in Feather Ridge"

"Which is where?" Reggie asked, not totally accepting the fact that this dog talked and somewhat looked like he did, without the muzzle, ears and fur of course.

The husky giggled "No where on the maps where you are from" He padded over to the bed Reggie was sitting on and extended his paw. "Nice to finally meet you Reggie" he said with a smile.

"um....nice to meet you too Scott." The boy warily took the paw and shook it before hiding it back under the covers.

Scott giggled again "Why are you afraid of me? I don't bite" he looked at the door and then looked back at Reggie "Watch out for Jesse though. He is harmless but he has no sense of personal boundaries" Scott said with a smile getting off the bed. "I am going to find Mom and Dad, they will be thrilled you are finally up" he said padding out of the room.

Reggie got out of bed and realized the pajamas he was in were not his and they were far to revealing. He saw a change of clothes set at the foot of the bed which looked like what he had been wearing only cleaned and folded. "Sheesh I must be dreaming!" the boy muttered dropping the pajama pants on the bed and slipping on his shirt. When his head was inside the shirt he got tackled by something onto the bed.

"Morning little brother!" a voice said as fur rubbed against his arm

The boy popped his head through the top of the shirt and sat pinned under a black husky about the same age as the other one. "Hmmmm, are you Jesse?" Reggie asked looking into the bright blue eyes of the new canine.

"My brother makes surprises no fun!" the husky pouted and crossed his arms sitting on Reggie's chest. "Oh well. I am glad you are finally up want to play?" Jesse sad wagging his tail and nuzzling Reggie's neck.

"Son get off of Reggie!" A stern voice came through the door. The husky got off of the boy in a flash leaving the boy staring at what he thought must a be a dream. The husky ran past a lithe woman with long brown hair and out the door. "Welcome home son" the woman smiled warmly and walked over to the bed.

"Mom!" Reggie cried and hugged her as if she was going to disappear without proper containment.

"Oh Reggie I'm so sorry it took so long!" She said hugging the boy tightly to her as her eyes teared up looking down at the now, sobbing boy.

"Is everything okay in here? I hope the boys were polite" A big husky walked into the room followed by the two boys.

Reggie's mom smiled as he walked in. "Oh Reggie this is...

"Bryant" Reggie cut her off as she looked down at him surprised. His shyness faded quickly as he saw his possibility for a fresh start. "Lets just say I had a very weird dream last night" he grinned and cuddled into his mom's embrace.

"Wow and I thought he was past out the whole trip here" The muscular husky said grinning back.

"Well son welcome to your new home" his mother said as the other three came over and hugged him as well. The young huskies hugging him together and sandwiched him. "Now boys Reggie is not used to anthros so do not crowd him.

"You are going to have fun at school next week" Jesse said overly excited

"Shut up bro! Let's let him rest for now. We will be back later Reggie" Scott said pulling his brother with him as they ran out into the hallways and downstairs.

"They are a little much for a first meeting" Bryant said lightly as he hugged Reggie's mother and then Reggie. That feeling again, the warmth from his embrace. Reggie sat back and blushed heavily when he realized he was nuzzling into the broad chest of the canine.

"Umm...Thanks Bryant" Reggie said bright red "Can we talk later? I am still kind of tired" Reggie said with a yawn.

"Sure we can" His mother smiled and tucked him back in before turning out the lights.

The boy laid looking at the ceiling. "Wow, this is going to be different"
