Prologue: Fleeting Whispers

It began just like that one day...we were just on the run and with no particular reason in mind we turned on the mighty Koopa Troop. Just like that, we took our training, all of our gifts, the specialized training we'd received and split on one of the most fearful of the Koopas in the realm. The best thing about it all: We didn't give a damn about any of that. The talents, the inborn strength, fortitude that we'd had was something that was always ours, what sense did he have trying to claim that suddenly it was a commodity that we the owners should fight over? But that's just how it was with leaders of big power, a regal family, and a majority of backers from your own breed: it goes to their head and suddenly you are nothing but a tool and that's how the ball bounces.

But that wasn't how it would bounce today; it was going to work for us or not at all. Damn the ball and its physics if it can't just accept who it is that we are then we'd have to make our own rules.

"Halt members of A.M.S.Unit Beta and Gamma, you are hereby commanded to return to the Lord's Keep immediately for reprimands on this attempt to flee from your royal sworn duties!" the voice from the commanding Koopatrol who barred the path that we aimed for, yeah it made things difficult. But again, this was what we thrived on.

There was no answer given by either cloaked koopa pair, the urgent need to escape from this abominable duty, which was what mattered and not even one tough bastard was going to put a stop to the timing of their escape.

"One chance to step aside, Captain Retor, you were always a great friend." The warning came from the first of the cloaked koopas, whose greave covered foot became visible in the dim torchlight of the gateway checkpoint.

"I can't do that, I am bound by duty." The words came with no warning; the gifted captain reached for his spiked lance and gripped the handle, as he knew full well what was coming from this moment.

There was only a single moment to blink as a gauntlet slammed into the section of the lance, while a following blow came from the same fist and was subsequently blocked by another section of the lance's neck. It was the third blow that sent the captain back in his tracks, stopped only by his impact on the heavy wooden door which groaned from the contact with his armored shell.

As a grin broke from the captain's attacker, a grunt came from his lips as his stance steadied. Once more stepping forward with the intent to stop both of them where they stood.

"You getting soft or what, Retor? That shouldn't have you dazed." The expectation of greater resistance from him was expected.

They were both past words: Retor's lance thrust at the hooded koopa, stabbing at the face and effortlessly piercing it. The action removed the cloak from the shoulders of its occupant, revealing the pure white mane of that scattered as she dropped to one knee. Still that same grin lining her lips as she rose in an instant, with her right gauntlet perfectly aligned for an uppercut to his ribs. The captain casually deflected the uppercut with the rear end of his pole-arm, unable to have seen the coming left that slammed into the side of his helmet and sent him back to the wooden door once again.

However as he began rising to his knees, he would feel a harsh club to the base of the armor's neck and shell-joint on his upper back. A loud crunch sounding as metal struck metal, the conflict was over before it could continue.

"Oh...you're no fun, Zelu! Why'd you stop him from rising? He was just starting to get into it you know." The teasing town of the still cloaked Koopa's sister rang out, much to his disappointment.

Giving her a small glance from beneath his hood, he kicked the great left door open, with only enough strength to open the weakened end did not break. It was amazing at his sister's change of tempo now and again, at first she was in a rush and now she wanted to play around with people they were once comrade-in-arms with? He would never understand what drove her really at times, she was one of the most complex people in his life: as far as he was concerned she was the only one like that he needed.

He waved to her and took up both of their sacks once his right shoulder, rushing down the hall with great haste while he paid no mind to the carpeted ground that was once his comfort...was now his prison. Something that both brother and sister had decided was no longer something that could be a part of their lives. After a moment or two of making sure their friend in common was still breathing, Xele left to catch up with her brother. It was time that they found a new place to make a life of their own in.

-In the throne room-

A terrifying roar shattered the once silent room while making a loud crash that resounded as if thunder incarnate. As the King of Koopas heard about the defeat of one of his strongest warriors, the enraged lord was a frightening sight and it meant horrible woe unto the courier who had delivered that horrid news. As the koopa in question could attest to, by merely standing under the heavy weight of his king's gaze had paralyzed his blood. If such a thing were truly possible, he was truly its victim at this very second.

"They broke through the checkpoint and still haven't been stopped?! Deploy the Hammer Bros. Units to the entry immediately, have the Magikoopas locate them the instant they use any sorcery! I will not have two of my greatest assets lost to your incompetence! Capture them or I'll be feeding your remains to the chain chomps below!" the sound of Bowser Koopa's fist slamming on his throne's arm with enough force to dent it sent the activity within his throne chamber into overdrive.

With Koopas of all shapes and sizes bustling with their orders and duties to attend to, it was a sight that let the remaining Koopalings not on mission a little worried.

"Hey, do you think King Dad's alright?" the words of the youngest of the royal Koopa Clan members seemed to be full of great doubt at that.

"He wouldn't be so furious if our lame relatives didn't try to run from him...honestly, they haven't enough courage to stand in their positions?" the uncaring tone of Ludwig von Koopa was clear to show his distaste for his cousins; how dare they flee from their great honor!

"Someone sounds envious, though I don't see why you are...who wants to slaughter a bunch of spores anyway? Besides its not like he treated them well, you know that as well as any of us. When father is like this, he is simply full of his desire to destroy; then they become no more than an extension of his wrath. Plain and simple, they are tools whenever he isn't making them jump through hoops." The regal daughter of the Koopa Clan Head spoke with far more insight than Ludwig cared to stomach.

Huffing at her attempt at logic, he waved his claw and drew up a document in hand, the fresh ink still full of its rich scent. A thick brimstone smell fresh on the magically inclined pap smell fresh on the magically inclined papyrus.

"They are lucky to have our royal bloodlines at all! You are far too kind sister, worrying about the foot soldiers that fight for the glory of our clan. They are our 9th cousins and should respect their clan head's wish for them to service. It is a moot point that they should have wills of their own." The simple words were enough to gain small applause from a few of his servants. Which earned his grin, oh he certainly felt dignified.

Wendy glared at her elder brother a moment and simply turned from him, there was no arguing with a thick skull was there? She had long since lost her taste for distraction, as she took time to educate herself and reflect upon her past it seemed the more troubled she became by it. She took the moment to take Bowser Jr. by the hand and lead him from their warmongering brother. She knew that their father was already training young jr. in the arts of sorcery and he wielded a scary amount of strength.

She honestly hoped that it was not too late to help him a sense of compassion; otherwise the blind genocide between the Koopa Clan and the Mushroom Kingdom would only persist. It was a thought that troubled her greater than any other thought in her mind, she was happy that her cousins escaped this miserable fate of war. Would they really make it? No...they had to make it, there couldn't be any doubt in her mind now. She brought her younger brother back to his room and patted his head.

"Where ya goin' Wendy?" his eyes were already full of suspicion, he was hardly innocent, much to his elder sister's dismay.

"Going back to my room, all of this talk of war is starting to annoy me." As she brushed off the look of suspicion and his low tone, she headed back to her room.

Though once the wily princess had grabbed her hand customized wand, she would make sure that they escaped no matter what it took. Why was she banking so much on family that she hardly knew? She was damned if she knew what possessed her, but the wheels were in motion and Wendy O' Koopa was racing against time to reach the second checkpoint before the two of them made their way there. If she could manage that, then she could likely get all of them from the Keep in one piece: but as anyone knew well...such plans rarely go well.
