Dran and Mist - Chapter Three

Haze - I'm a lost cause, not a hero: But I'll make it on my own.

The slug thudded into the back of Dran's head, Mist able to see her reflection in his eyes as he fell forward, almost in slow motion, hair breaking away from its band to lay bedraggled in the blood. It was pooling about his body, leaking from the wound, its initial spatter covering the renamons front in delicate droplets of crimson. Enraged, the Bio-Angel pointed the weapon downwards, emptying the remaining five shots into the mans back, his body convulsing with each shot as they passed through him to crack the marble. Haze barged Mist away, knocking her to the floor and out of its initial range as the monster stepped over Dran, throwing the spent weapon aside to confront his primary threat. Its shriek met a doppler effect as it moved through the air with speed unprecedented in a class one, wings angled upwards, distorted reflections upon its skin, shining as if recently oiled. The renamon jumped upwards, evading its charge and anchoring his feet into one of the arches separating the rooms; he pushed off, claws sliding across the ceiling as he performed a backwards flip, landing behind the creature, raising his arm in preparation for the swipe that would have ended it. The Bio-Angel's back foot struck out, its arms having already found some purchase upon the marble, its push-kick striking Haze in the chest knocking him off his feet and through the air, slamming into the side of the breakfast bar, blood ejected from his mouth as he lay, panting. It wheeled, face impassive, claws extending from its fingertips, each almost three inches in length, razors on hands lowered to its hips as it simply began to walk towards the female cradling the head of the human.

Mist raised her eyes from her blood-soaked hands, resting her gaze upon the Bio-Angel. Rage like fire burning within her heart as the back of her hand brushed against his breast pocket, the pendent that he had recovered earlier skimming her fur, his digivice beeping furiously. The air about her shimmered, increasing in intensity until beginning to blur its way into shape: Formed from the light about her, a new skin, blending into physical form as it spread about her, settling to her own, winding about her arms, chest, face, yet her eyes remained the same. Claws lengthened, fur becoming more gruff, the kyubimon rearing, baring its teeth as it protected its downed tamer. Multiple tails spread out behind her, each flicking as the aquamarine flames upon them grew brighter, her opponent diving forwards, folding its wings over its front to protect itself, yet it was too little. Each flame combined into a singular mass, blasting forward Mist anchored her feet before Dran, the spectral attack impacting the closed barrier of wings, one of them blasted away, spiralling from the creature as blood spattered the wall in a crimson arc, its arm dropping limply to the ground, the wound heavily singed as its other wing bent at an awkward angle. It screamed in rage, the sound catching in its throat as she mirrored Drans shift capabilities, appearing before it, cross pendant swaying in place of a kyubimons usual ribbon, each clawed hand already on the Bio-Angel's chest. "Cobalt..." Ice blasted through it, shredding the torso, contacting the ceiling as a fine mist, the plaster contracting as it froze, narrow fissures spreading across the marble laced archways. She dropped to a knee as the body fell infront of her, the prior form of the kyubimon falling away like the skin of a peeled onion, dissolving into light. She panted for a few moments before rising suddenly, "Dran!"

Mist knelt beside him, shoving his shoulder, the human remaining motionless. Haze placed a hand upon her arm, shaking his head as she turned to face him. "He was a great warrior... But not even Dran can take a bullet to the head and li-" The body inhaled suddenly, Haze falling backwards as Mist hugged her tamers back, "HOLY SHIT ON A STICK!"

Dran sat up, wincing as he slid in his own blood, "Goddammit! There goes another tuxedo..."

Xak sighed dejectedly, staring diligently into the screen of his laptop. Sat against an air vent, he could see far across the city from his rooftop vantage point, the sea spreading out to one side, the sun now fully broken from the horizon calling the lights of the street into darkness. A cool breeze provided remise from the summer warmth, the grey roof of the hotel proving the perfect place to think in silence. Three images were open alongside eachother in his viewer, a weregarurumon, a Bio-Angel and... Himself. He tapped furiously at the keyboard, a series of code flashing up alongside them, a double helix slowly rotating in three differing colours. He withdrew the cable from his arm, ignoring the trace of blood that came away with the needle point.

"It's tonight..."

He cradled his right arm, startled into movement when his scanner began to beep a shrill tone. He pulled it from his pocket, placing it to his ear, "Xak? It's Alder."

Xak groaned, pulling himself up the wall, standing and facing out over the ocean as he got to his feet, idly spinning a silver wedding ring about his finger, gaze trailing from the people below, up into infinity, "Lemme guess... The skullgreymon fiasco last night?"

"Bio-Angel's may be under the jurisdiction of LastBreath but you tore up MY city while fighting it. The paperwork alone is going to take a year, I mean my god! You're without a doubt the most irresponsible..." He let her rant on. The company had usually remained on good terms with the city police, mainly because they kept out of eachothers way, only communicating for the occasional joint operation and for squad passage into the digital world.

"There was no other choice. An enemy that big is bound to come with considerable collateral."

"I had jets on the way, cars blazing out a path and you just couldn't resist playing the hero..." She sighed audibly, "Reconnaissance shows that most of the enemy are still in the digital world. They seem to be massing on the salt flats but the column is heading southwards into the black islands... See that your superiors know this. We can talk later."

The line went dead, Xak having neglected to tell the chief of police that he was the only remaining employee of the company. He returned his communicator to its place, turning as a door opened behind him, his partner standing next to the human and staring into the horizon, "We need to talk."

*Were fucked.*

*****

Haze concluded his monologue, "So... Somehow, Mist used a Bio-Angel ability to kill the class one before this idiot scared the hell out of me."

Xak sipped his coffee, sliding back on one of the sofas. Both people and digimon passed the busy street beyond the window; a queue steadily dwindling at the checkout of the Starbucks. He placed his mug on the table, the green and white décor reflecting in the waves of brown, addressing Dran, "What part of you is B.A?"

"My blood. You have it too, don't you?" He had instantly carded the other human as an anal military type yet his attitude and mannerisms were more inclusive. Oddly, it felt good to let someone else input some initiative for a change, heading for a dead set course of action rather than just blasting along randomly. He couldn't help but smile reguardless of the situation, taking in the more familiar surroundings, *Starbucks really are everywhere...*

Xak closed his eyes. He had replaced his jumpsuit with a pair of plain jeans and a thin white T-shirt; pulling back the cuff of a tan leather jacket he raised his right hand as if to wave, his first finger completely black, its shape distorted, the nail more like a claw, "It's lightning based... Enough to generate ammo at least."

Mist flicked her pendent nervously, "If being part Bio-Angel is what gives you your powers... Then why haven't any of them so far-"

"Used any special ability?" Xak glanced at Dran once more, as if to say 'you've not explained?' He sighed, pulling a small, silver six shooter from beneath his jacket, tapping the side and emptying the chamber into his hand. Fortunately his back was to the rest of the store, the crowds missing his motions as he raised a bullet, "Say that... Bio-Angels are like bullets... And everyone else is an unloaded gun." He dropped each one into its respective chamber as he spoke, "Combine their DNA with that of another creature and..." He clipped it back together, spinning it once on his finger before placing it back in the holster hanging under his arm, "They react..."

Haze looked down, staring into the wood of the table, "If that skullgreymon hadn't been such an unstable synthesis then its missile would have borne strength equivalent to a cold war era nuclear bomb."

Dran rubbed the back of his neck, the dried blood coming away as an uncomfortable flaked blackness. "Then how did Mist use Cobalt?"

"I can only guess that it has something to do with that pendent... But I'll need my research materials to conduct an investigation - and they're back at HQ." He downed the remainder of his drink, smiling to himself as his digimon looked at him worriedly, his gaze passing between him and the two on the other seat, "You guys go and clean that blood off yourselves... I'll have a new suit sent up for Dran..." He stood, a more determined look in his eye, "Me and Haze are going to get our equipment."

*****

Dran chuckled, holding his jacket up and sliding a finger through one of the blood lined bullet holes, the fabric tearing further as he did so. He dropped it on the floor, removing the remainder of his clothing and folding them into the black garment, tying the sleeves into a perfect bundle, laced with rust coloured dry blood. He grinned, the bathroom of the luxury suite was perhaps one of the largest rooms; the crimson and cream décor continuing into the area; along the wall left of the door, a large shower, hemmed in by clear glass, the sprinklers lacing the entire ceiling within making the effect seem almost like rain. Across from the necessities of a bathroom, a large circular whirlpool bath, a thin pillar of marble rising from its center, joints like wheel spokes spreading to the upper vectors of the room from about half way up. He hit the wall switch, listening out for the barely audible electric hum before water began to fall on the other side of the glass, pearling against the windows as steam began to rise over the top. He slid the door open, closing his eyes and facing the floor, thinking through the constant half roar of the water, *I wish I knew where we were supposed to go from here... And then theres me and Mist, which I'm probably even more clueless a-* The sound of someone shifting took him out of his trance, head snapping upwards as the metallic echo resonated through the room, "Mist...?"

The renamon smiled, already soaked, her tail lowered into the small amount of floodwater draining down a central grille. "I disturb your thinking?"

Dran sighed, brushing his hand around his neck to erase the remainder of the smear of blood that the initial downpour had failed to dislodge, "Maybe..."

She smiled, her fur matted to her body, taking pride in the spot of red that her presence had called to his cheek, "Knowing you it was probably some grand 'what now?' plan - or were you thinking about me?"

He moved up to her side, tracing his feet along the tiles as he went, gently brushing the back of his hand across her neck, "I could have been."

She placed a hand on the side of his thigh, looking up at him as she came closer, some hunger lighting her eyes, "Anything... Fun cross your mind?" She gave him enough time to raise an eyebrow while she retracted her arm, countering his uncertainty by simply pouncing into him, tackling Dran to the ground, sitting on his stomach, victory short lived before he placed an arm about her neck, using the leverage to knock her to her back, collecting and holding her wrists together in his other hand to prevent her initial struggle as he kissed her. Tongues entwined as they maintained the spirit of their game, Mist twisting an arm free, pushing Dran off her while sweeping his supporting leg away, pinning each of his hands above his head before raising her own, breaking their kiss as something hard nudged her rump.

Dran grunted, moving his arms to the side to support himself as she shifted down his body, wrapping fingers about his already stiff member. He blinked water out of his fringe, "Don't tease..." she was stroking him gently, a trail of the 'rain' channelled into a pillar, falling from the tip of her nose over the pink head. Agonisingly slowly she engaged her lips about it, sliding her hand up and down the remainder as she gave the head full attention. It was difficult, yet he resisted the urge to force her down on it, the renamon seeming to know exactly how to torment him; her tail trailed to the side as she worked, the distorted reflection against the steamed glass difficult to make out, *I swear she does these things on purpose...* He could feel himself getting closer, though as if she almost sensed it she slowed, soon ceasing completely, staring upwards innocently, "Oh, you did not."

Dran moved as swiftly as he could given the terrain, knocking her over as she managed only a half rise. Cold water ran between the two sheets of glass around the shower, the freezing surface allowing better circulation of steam; pinned against it, the effect on her breasts almost agonising compared to the hot water assailing her back, "You just had to get me back, huh?" He grinned behind her as she raised her tail in submission, tracing a finger about her yin-yang patterns before placing the hand against her front, sliding it downwards as he nudged her from behind, erection sliding into its target as easily before, drawing a shuddering whine from Mist. He took a purposefully slow pace, hilting himself with every thrust, making her work by gyrating her hips as she panted into the glass. She lost some of her ferocity after her first orgasm, only the additional tightness noted by Dran as the water provided ample lubrication. Working himself up to his former state he couldn't resist slamming faster, her moans edging him on as the dull echo met his ears. A final squeeze from perhaps the most violent climax that he had ever seen Mist experience sent him over the edge, her writhing against the cold surface, leaning back to kiss Dran as he rode her through, "At least we don't have to worry about the cleanup..."

*****

Haze backed away, tossing the spent Glock aside and picking up a second from the mutilated body of a human female. LastBreath headquarters had been adapted from a once abandoned hospital, evidence of its former use present in the form of its corridor and room systems. Spread extensively over three floors, the underground complex couldn't help but make the renamon visualise 'the hive', having sat through 'resident evil' during a free night with his tamer. It still gave him nightmares now. A thin turquoise bar ran along the midsection of the plain white walls, continuing even across doorways in the form of an opening handle, broken only by the extensive damage of the prior battles. Small craters covered the area, glass smashed, bullet holes distorting the steel doors, pipes and cables showing in areas blown away. Bodies lay along the corridors, humans, digimon, Bio-Angels almost indistinguishable, slashed beyond recognition, blood spattering the walls in arcs of crimson, dripping its gore onto the corpses below. Stepping over these, three class ones advanced, slowed by Haze's hale of bullets as he walked backwards, "So, what do you think of those two?"

His tamer moved beside him, pausing for a moment to fire his weapon more accurately, balancing the overlarge handgun over his forearm, "Dran and Mist?" He fired, the following impact blowing the head off the central attacker, another already taking point as it entered through a side corridor, "Nice people."

Haze dropped to a knee, retrieving a second Glock, firing short bursts to slow the advance while Xak picked them off, "You know what I mean. She was all over him - Couldn't you smell her?" He slipped slightly in a patch of blood, still wet, "...Dammit." More Bio-Angels were emerging, joining the initial assault as their numbers swelled to over half a dozen.

"I doubt there's anything going on." Another explosion as his charged shot blasted the majority of a body away, the wings slamming into the others as it fell back, "She's been on her own all this time and now theres a whole new world, shes been dropped into - they've both been dropped into." He caught the renamons shoulder as he slipped in more gore, "It's natural that she's gonna be clingy."

Haze nodded, throwing one of his empty guns, the handle smashing against the face of one of the Bio-Angels, blood spurting from it's nose. His tamer nodded as if to say 'good shot', "Were lucky that these remenants have used most of their power. This is like shooting fish in a... Oh." Only a few remained but behind them, the wall was looming closer, in such cramped conditions, fighting would be difficult.

Xak's solution was simple; grabbing the renamon by the shoulder he pulled him behind a broken doorway, the steel bent outwards into their path. A grenade slid to a stop before them, perhaps a second of silence before the explosion resonated through the area, a shredded torso flying overhead to slam into a wall, falling to the floor, still, "Now that's just nasty..." They rose, the place now almost silent, only an electric hum of the lights and the whistling of the air conditioning remaining. "I guess that was the last of them... Barely a dozen lower classes left in the place; they must have cleared out after they finished." He sighed, returning his weapon to its holster, spinning a quick three sixty to take in his surroundings.

Haze dropped his weapon into his shoulder pack, the gun knocking against the dozen or so hard drives that they had retrieved. He kicked the nearest door open, the sign 'main laboratory' falling to the ground, "Just your serum to go and we can hit destruct..." Lights flickered on as they crossed the threshold, illuminating the room in the white unchanged from its hospital days. Several benches furnished the room, stools knocked over around them, yet the place was fortunately devoid of bodies. Various pieces of distillation equipment stacked the shelves surrounding the space, one wall a mass of chemicals. Directly ahead of them, a great circular door of steel, a small window above the circular opening wheel. Beyond, several vials could be seen on a raised plinth, each of the multicoloured contents tagged with a label. Haze moved forwards, reaching for the handle yet Xak grabbed his wrist, tugging his head in the way of the opening.

"Theres something in there."

Haze moved to the window, clearing the light steam away with his paw, a shape curled up on the ground, "Holy hell... It's Trine!" Xak grabbed the other side of the wheel, their combined strength shifting it, the door sliding open. The human moved forwards, dropping each of the vials into his jacket as his partner ducked down to check the gatomon. The renamon lifted her, holding the body to his chest, "She's alive. Barely... We should take her back; my kit is still at the hotel."

Xak turned, beckoning for Haze to follow him, walking side by side as they left the lab, turning onto the main corridor and heading for the primary elevator, "We have what we need..." He stepped over the body of a decapitated Bio-Angel, the pair passing into the lift. Doors closed behind them, the sensation of upward movement as they headed for the exit. "...So lets blow this place to hell and get back to the others." He tapped a few keys on the side panel, the keypad falling away to reveal a second as Haze placed his burden on the ground, examining the gatomon's wounds. A slash crossed diagonally through her chest, almost deep enough to be life threatening, hindered breathing slowing as the renamon placed a cold hand over her head.

"Trine would be the one to survive... She must have shut herself in when the place was overrun." He watched Xak tap a few final keys on the second pad, collecting a small silver disk as it was ejected from the system.

"As soon as we leave the lift, were gonna have to run. The charges should collapse the facility but due to the structural damage, the surrounding area may fall through... How do you know the cat?"

"We're old friends." He lifted her once more, facing the doors, "What was the disc?"

"It was ejected when I keyed in the destruct code... Maybe some final orders?" There was a ping as the elevator stopped. The doors split open, the light of the dusk expanding as they stepped out onto the waterfront.

The ground began to shake. A dull rumble chasing them as the earth fell away.
