Chapter 11: The return

Lt. Wagner turned around and saw Cynder take off with Karson in her arms. He smiled and realized that they might need some help. He ordered Lt. Buckman over and got a Nighthawk drop ship. They boarded it and it took off towards the temple.

As they neared the temple Wagner saw a Lakador drop ship land near the temple and deploy troops. He cursed and ordered his men ready. He loaded his M74D and got ready. They Nighthawk cleared the mushroom line and dozens of Lakadors spotted them and open fire. The drop ship took heavy fire.

"Damn it! Fires to hot! I'll have to drop you guys off! Radio in when you're ready!" The pilot yelled from the cockpit. Lt. Wagner did a check to make sure his boom mike worked and was satisfied with its condition.

"Alright LZ is hot! I repeat hot!" The drop ship slowly touched down and Lt. Wagner got up from his seat.

"Alright pile out! Let's move!" And with that the ten man squad left the Nighthawk and took up firing positions in the mushroom line. They had to catch the Lakadors in a bad situation.

The Lakadors still held their footing even though the marines had superior cover. For they had nearly twice as many soldiers. Lt. Wagner took up a position where he could hit the enemy. He lay down in prone position and pointed his rifle outwards. He put his sight on the first Lakador he saw. He fired two short burst from his rifle. The first one hit the Lakador in the chest. His armor cracked at the entry point and blood oozed from it. The second burst hit the Lakador in the neck and it fell over onto its back with a mortal wound.

The Lakadors started to fall one by one. The marines were picking them off. Wagner spotted another and fired another short, sustained burst. The Lakador screamed as the bullets shredded his skin. The best part was, the Lakadors had really no idea where the marines were. Lt. Wagner smiled to himself as he watched another victory unfold.

Suddenly there was a sound over all the fighting. A Lakador drop ship flew over the mushroom and used its dark energy cannon to pepper the marine's position. Marines screamed as the dark energy boiled away at their skin. The drop ship landed and many more Lakadors emerged. They opened fire on where the marines were. Many more screams filled the air as marines were hit by the oncoming fire. Wagner abandoned his position and keyed his mike. He ordered all of the remaining marines to fall back. An explosion blasted the mushrooms around Wagner and he flew back to where he originally was. He got up to his feet and saw that several Lakadors had gone on a flanking run and had swung in behind them. They were trapped.

The Lakadors walked over to Wagner. Several Lakadors emerged from where the marines had been. They tossed four marines onto the ground. The marines grunted and got back up, only to be hit to the ground again. Wagner recognized the marines: Lt. Buckman, Cpl. Howard, Pvt. Mendez, and Sgt. Malarkey. He cursed. They lined the marines up in an execution style order and what Wagner presumed was a Lakador commander (because it had a tail and bigger maw than the rest) inspected the marines kneeling there. A Lakador grabbed Wagner and tossed him next to Lt. Buckman. He shakily got back up. He was met with an energy pistol pointed at his face by the Lakador commander. Wagner felt fear wash over him. He held it back though. He was still in command of the other men and he had to show it, no matter the circumstances. The Lakador played a smile across his maw as he prepared to fire his gun.

Suddenly the air around them snapped as a UERMC Nighthawk drop ship plowed its way into reality. It flew overhead. A .50 cal machine gun on the nose of the aircraft came to life as it sent its payload. Lakadors were cut to shreds as the dense .50 cal rounds tore through their armor like it was paper. The Lakador in front of him stood there it shock as he took in the situation unfolding in front of him.

Wagner took advantage of the situation and hit the Lakador in the groin. He doubled over and Wagner reached for his own side arm. He grabbed it and hit the Lakador in the head with it. The Lakador ordered something to his men in his own language and they started to take up firing positions on the opposite side of the clearing they were in. The Lakador sprinted and joined his own kind in a trench.

The drop ship landed a few yards in front of Wagner on the opposite side of where the Lakadors had retreated to. Wagner ordered the marines to take cover behind the drop ship. They moved behind the drop ship. The troop bay opened up and four figures emerged. Wagner recognized them immediately: Karson, Allison, Spyro and Cynder. They nodded to each other and they handed out assault rifles to the four other marines. They then moved into good firing positions. Wagner ordered Buckman to lay down suppressing fire and Wagner would take two marines along with Karson, Allison, Spyro and Cynder on a flanking run.

They moved quickly into the trees and moved around the Lakadors position. Wagner held his hand up for the "hold" signal. They held their position and Karson and Allison walked up. Wagner nodded to Karson and he opened fire. The special munitions rounds that they had recovered from the Trident tore the Lakador to shreds. A burst of five rounds was all it took to blow the Lakador into pieces of flesh and metal.

Wagner looked at this with sheer awe. He unloaded his assault rifle and sure enough, there was the experimental special munitions rounds sitting in the clip. He chuckled and reloaded his rifle. He aimed it and fired a single shot. He watched as a Lakador's head exploded into pieces of flesh and bits of the head armor. He was surprised at just how powerful this new ammunition was.

Spyro used his ice breath against the Lakadors. They were frozen in place. Cynder used her horns to break the frozen enemies. Spyro smiled at her and they did the same trick over and over. Spyro decided to mix match it up and he used electric breath to propel the enemy into Cynder's prepared fire fury.

Karson fired his rifle at the enemy. His rifle bolt clacked. He was out. He set his rifle down and lifted his palm out. He felt a warm sensation flow through his arms. He channeled it like he did yesterday. A jet of white hot flames shot forth. It caught a Lakador in the chest. The Lakador screamed as the fire found his skin. Karson broke the stream and shot forth another. This one didn't hit anyone but it forced the Lakadors into cover. Karson was oblivious to the fact that a Lakador had snuck through the brush and was behind Karson.

It grabbed Karson. He struggled but then the Lakador had him in a bind he couldn't get out of. Allison saw this and was infuriated. She had already been separated from Karson twice. She wouldn't let this happen. She felt a powerful sensation rush through her body. She felt power steadily building inside of her with each passing second. She felt as though it was familiar. Like something she had forgotten to do but remembered. She instinctively raised her arm and a blue light emanated from it. A stream of ice blasted its way out of her and froze the Lakador holding onto Karson. She walked over and punched both of the Lakadors arms, breaking Karson free. She then kicked the frozen Lakador, breaking him into several pieces.

"Wow. Thanks." Karson said amazed. She kissed him on the cheek.

"Anytime." He smiled back at her. They picked up their rifles and continued to kill the Lakadors.

Soon what Lakadors weren't laying on the ground as shreds of meat, fled into the mushroom forest. The two other marines in the squad fired their rifles in single shot bursts hoping to hit them.

"Cease fire!" Wagner called out. The marines regrouped in the troop bay of the Nighthawk drop ship. They saw all the ammo and medical supplies that they had inside the drop ship. Wagner let out a whistle.

"Where did you find all this?" Wagner said picking up a clip of special munitions.

"Now that is a very long story. Right now we need to get back to the Archilles." Karson said. Spyro nodded with approval just before it all happened.

Suddenly Spyro screamed with pain as his legs gave out and blood gushed from the wound on his chest. His vision went red and he started to shake uncontrollably. His muscles spasmed as he shook violently. Cynder screamed and grabbed Spyro trying to comfort him. Cynder started to scream too as her previously healing wounds suddenly broke open. Spyro stopped shaking and his eye lids closed. Karson ran over to them and looked up at Wagner.

"We have to get them back now!" Wagner nodded and grabbed Spyro. Allison grabbed Cynder. They all boarded the drop ship and it ascended into the sky and speed towards the Archilles.

Lakador Field Commander Yahade' cursed as he led his men to the LZ. The humans had foiled his attempts to capture the two dragons and two humans. They had to have those in particular ones in order for everything to work. He cursed again as he though how he was going to explain this to the Supreme Commander.

Spyro awoke and saw a few figures standing above him. He could here them speaking to him. He struggled to understand.

"Spyro can you here us." Ignitus asked. They saw him open his eyes.

"Hey, hello? Come on buddy I know you can here us." Sparx said. Spyro grunted and he tried to sit up in his bed and saw that he was back in his room in the dragon temple. He began to wonder if everything that had happened was just a dream. When he saw a bandage strapped around his chest he knew this was no dream. He noticed that his bed felt different. It felt really good. Unlike the stone base that he had been using for the bed, there was a soft material underneath him. It felt like the medical bed onboard the Archilles. It felt really good. He saw Ignitus and Sparx above him.

"Ignitus, what happened?" Spyro asked with a weak voice. Ignitus smiled at him. Spyro groaned as his muscles spasmed when he tried to sit up.

"Relax young dragon. You used a lot of your energy back there." Ignitus said.

"Where's Cynder? Is she alright?" Spyro asked. Sparx let out a chuckle.

"Don't worry. She'll be fine. It's you we're worried about." Ignitus said putting his paw on Spyro's chest. Spyro lay back down and sighed. Ignitus turned to Sparx.

"Could you give me and Spyro a moment alone?" Sparx let out a huff of disapproval and left the room.

"Now Spyro there is something I need to ask you. I am fully aware of what you and Cynder have been doing when you two are alone." Spyro gulped as he heard this.

"And there is no need to worry. You are starting to grow up Spyro. All this happens to be part of growing up."

"But Ignitus, what if I have impregnated her?"

"Don't worry Spyro; you two are far too young to even worry about that. It will be at least a year before you two will have to consider children. Even then, it is only a voluntary action." Spyro sighed with relief and looked Ignitus in the eyes. He suddenly remembered something.

"Wait how long have I been out?"

"A few days." Ignitus said in return.

"A few days?! Ignitus ther-"Ignitus put his paw over Spyro's mouth.

"Relax young dragon. Karson and Allison have told us everything. Very curios things have been going on and it appears you four are of great importance." Spyro let himself relax and put his eyes on Ignitus.

"Right now you need to rest." Spyro nodded and closed his eyelids and fell into a deep sleep.

Spyro awoke much later. He still had some pain, but at least now he could walk. He got off the bed and onto the floor. He walked into Cynder's room. She was asleep. Most of her wounds had been flesh, or broken bones which the doctors said would heal fast; especially with this medicine they gave her. He sighed and looked at her sleeping form on the bed. She was so perfect, so agile. He was glad he was her mate. He sat there thinking about her for hours. He didn't even realize how long he had been sitting there.

He heard a yawn and looked up to see Cynder waking up. She saw him and she smiled. He returned the smile and got up to greet her.

"Well good morning." Spyro said walking to her bed side.

"Hmmm, it's always a good morning with you here." He smiled and they kissed. They sat there enjoying each others loving bliss. They were interrupted when they heard a cough.

"Well I see you two are better." Karson said. They both smiled at him. Allison waked in at this time. She smiled when she saw them both doing well.

"So, what's happened while we were out?" Spyro asked.

"Well, one of our forward recon teams located where the Lakador base is. They reported that it is deep into the mushroom jungle, in a large clearing. Colonel Dyke wants to launch a strike against it immediately." Karson replied. Cynder got off the bed and walked to Spyro's side.

"No, you guys are going to stay here. You guys still need to heal. Spyro, that bullet wound is still healing. You wouldn't be of much help out there." Karson saw Spyro look to the floor.

"Don't worry, we're not leaving either. Wagner says all of us need some rest." Spyro and Cynder looked at each other and they sighed happily. Spyro looked at Karson.

"Hey do you want to train a bit with fire breath?" Spyro asked.

"Sure." Karson replied. With that they left for the dojo. Spyro and Karson met up with Ignitus and they trained with fire. Karson showed some mastery over fire but still wasn't as good as Spyro was. Cynder sat down with Allison as they watched. They started talking about their past now that they were at peace for a bit.

"So what does Earth look like? I mean we sort of saw it but that was when it was destroyed." Cynder asked.

"Earth is the human home world. There were many beautiful areas. One was our home town on an island. I and Karson both grew up there. It was really nice there. The place we were at, Threshold, was where the leadership of our military is located. It is a really beautiful city. Some of the buildings go way back. There are some really nice places back on Earth. I don't really know if any of that still exists with all the war going on right now."

Cynder frowned. She saw how ravaged that city was earlier. It looked like it was once a beautiful place. She saw Spyro trying to show Karson how to use fire fury. Karson managed to get something going, but not full blown fire fury.

"You never did tell me how you and Spyro met." Allison said. Cynder chuckled.

"Well, I don't really like to think about it though." Cynder sighed and recalled the events of their meeting. She told her how they were in the going to be born together but Gaul attacked the temple and took her egg while Ignitus saved Spyro's. She also mentioned how she had been corrupted by the dark master and how she and Spyro battled it out in the portal of Convexity. Allison let out a soft whistle when Cynder finished.

"Sounds bitter sweet. But I guess you two must really love each other to put all that behind you guys." Cynder sighed happily as she watched Spyro use his flame breath. He was so talented.

"Yea. I couldn't think of anyone I would rather be with. Are you and Karson going to be mates?"

"Mates? Well I guess you could say that. We plan on getting married. We can't right now because both of us are in the military and we would probably get a court martial for that."

"Court martial? What's that?" Cynder asked confused.

"That's what our military does to soldiers who are unruly and things like that."

"Oh." Cynder turned her head to watch Spyro again. She sighed happily as her dragon gallantly used his fire fury.

Karson was enveloped in light as he finally used a decent fire fury. Spyro and Ignitus were amazed at how fast he had picked up fire. Karson walked over to Allison and plopped down to where they had been watching. He was sweaty and breathing hard.

"Wow, who would have known that would be so draining." They all laughed. They rested and Karson and Allison got up.

"We are going to get something to eat. You guys want anything?" Spyro's stomach growled along with Cynder's and they both chuckled and looked at Karson.

"I take it that's a yes." Karson said and they walked off. They returned from the makeshift mess hall in the dragon temple that had been made near the entrance. They came carrying a couple hamburgers and fries. They sat down next to Spyro and Cynder. They both looked at the food curiously. Karson handed each of them a hamburger.

"Try it. You'll like it." He said while chewing some of his own burger in his mouth. They both smelled it before eating it. As soon as they placed the burger in their mouth, they moaned as it tasted heavenly.

"Wow this is good!" Cynder said after swallowing her first bite. Spyro nodded as he swallowed his bite.

"Wow, these are good." He said. Karson nodded as he reached for his drink. They sat there talking about their past experiences. When they finished the food, they walked over and got rid of the trash. They then returned and sat down once again. This time, Cynder fell asleep and Allison laid her head on Karson's shoulder. Spyro placed his wing on Cynder and she smiled and nestled her head against Spyro. He smiled at her.

"You know that's just wrong." Sparx said flying up.

"What? The part about me loving Cynder?" Spyro asked.

"That, and the fact that you left me here with these guys while you went on another adventure."

"Sorry Sparx; just thought that you might need a break that's all." Spyro chuckled as he said this. He then rubbed his head against Cynder's and she sighed in her sleep.

"Ugh, I'll see you later." Sparx flew off back into the temple. Spyro laughed as he heard Sparx grumble as he flew away. Karson sat there laughing.

"So is this how it's always been?"

"Not really. Just since I fell in love with Cynder." They sat there talking about their pasts again. During the talking Karson didn't even notice the glimmer of red in Spyro's eyes. Spyro didn't even notice anything either. They continued to talk. Eventually, they also fell into a deep sleep.

SSgt. Jacobs was on his patrol with his squad of four marines. They trudged through the mushroom forest in the brush and looked out for anything such as apes or Lakadors. So far there was nothing. The staff sergeant sighed as they continued their patrol. He heard gun fire in the distance, suggesting a fire fight somewhere. He paused when he heard a sound besides the sound of boots hitting mushrooms. The tall grass surrounding them swayed in the soft wind. He looked around. Nothing. Suddenly Pvt. Richard was pulled into the tall grass and they heard him screaming as something dragged him away. The rest of the marines looked around for targets. There was nothing. Finally Cpl. Vostok fired his rifle in a nervous flinch. The rest of the marines fired into the grass to no avail. Suddenly these creatures emerged from the grass and tore Cpl. Vostok to pieces.

"Fall back! Fall back!" Jacobs yelled to his men as they ran for a foot path not to far from where they were. Another private screamed in horror as the creatures grabbed him and slowly killed him. When they reached the path, the only other soldier still with Jacobs jumped out into the clearing, only to be dragged back into the mushroom forest screaming in sheer terror. Jacobs broke into a run as he heard the marine's screams die away. He didn't look back. He didn't know where he was going. He felt something sharp penetrate his back and knew it was all over.

The end had truly begun.
