#2 of Project Mitosis

Well, here is the first actual chapter of P.M. For most of the chapters, the beginning will be filled with a brief commentary by Derik as to help you relate to the future Project Mitosis takes place in. Since this is really my first Sci-Fi story, I can only hope it piques your interest and if there are things that need to be improved, I'm always open to comments.

Heh...by the end of the 21st Century, weaponry evolved into such a state it truly frightens me in terms of what's to come. While Leo Ivanek was the genius behind Darwin's Genesis, the state of our combat weapons was brought about by a US scientist named Daniel Richards. Believing that bullets were now only a waste of metal and money, Professor Richards concluded that the only way to move forward would be to remove the useless variable.

In the end, Richards developed what is called HCL, or Highly Concentrated Light, but everyone just calls it laser weaponry. Inside every gun or bladed weapon hilt lies a computer chip along with an incredibly reflexive lens. When activated by the computer chip, a flash of light equivalent to 20 Megawatts bursts forth into the reflexive lens, which concentrates that light and shoots it forward. From there, specialized "chambers" within the weapon check if the light needs to be shot forth or merely suspended into a form. As the chambers analyze the light beam, plasma is inserted and suspended into the beam to give it physical properties.

And while I wish I could explain how all of that is even possible, I'm afraid the only ones who truly know that are Richards and his associate Professor Marks. However, I have come to learn the most important lesson about these weapons; killing has now become easier than most people can comprehend.

While bullets did simplify things, the very monitor you read this from could be your own death. I believe there is an author from the early 21st Century who truly knows how to summarize this: "By dreaming, we have damned ourselves to the deepest pits of Hell."

His breath, his pulse, his very existence shifted into a sporadic frenzy. The trees, the walkway, even Big C and the oncoming gangster were suddenly shaking violently in his vision, as if a giant earthquake was hitting. But this earthquake was not stopping the world around him.

As if on cue, the transparent blue monitor produced from his internal implant opened in front of him and brought forth an incredibly detailed 3-D avatar of his body. Within moments the model was removed of his fur and his skin, showing his body's muscles as they pumped or were delivered their precious lifeblood. When the implant enhanced the model to show his chest, it revealed his heart was pulsating at nearly quadruple the speed of a normal heart.

In merely nanoseconds, the screen backed away to the full-body mode and a scared male voice echoed into his mind "Warning: heartbeat exceeding normal parameters. Shocking heart in 10...9...8...7..."

But as the timer reached one, suddenly the voice stopped momentarily and in a much more neutral tone claimed, "Restart aborted...Internal signals reverting to normal levels." His world still breaking under the pressure of this phantom quake, Derik truly thought his life was coming to end. Soon, however, he would reflect upon this day and wish it really had ended then.

Given just a few moments, the 3-D avatar regained its skin, but it began to warp and distort. Immediately afterwards, the avatar was covered by massive green computerized words that read, "Beginning the SRS...Now!"

As soon as those words flashed before his eyes, Derik Stone met himself for the first time, literally. His heart beating to the point where any moment it would probably go into shock, the young panther felt his right half being stretched, neigh pulled, away from the rest of him. What truly surprised him, however, was that this stretching wasn't killing him; in fact it didn't even hurt. In some macabre sense, this spectacle was actually quite beautiful.

Within just minutes, his entire body was going through this process of stretching until finally his entire right side split from him. And yet, the young panther was still whole, but then again so was the one standing right next to him.

Taking a moment to look at each other, the two Derik Stones suddenly grasped what had happened. He just cloned himself! The voice of his twin an icy wind, the clone panther nodded towards the gangster and stated "That one is mine."

As Derik finally returned his attention to the world in front of him, what he saw in return were six eyes staring at him in incomprehensible disbelief. Before he could even speak in return, the panther's clone bolted into a run after the gangster standing motionless in fear. Figuring he should merely ask questions later, Derik flew into motion towards the german sheppard Big C.

While the frightened dog simply lost his courage, as well as his sex drive most likely, and ran off, the gangster wasn't so willing. Gaining what few senses he had right as the clone panther reached him, the thug instinctively swiped up with his laser-knife, scoring a solid hit on the would-be assailant.

Backing away as the knife seared through his flesh, Derik's clone touched the left side of his face to feel a burning line of agony running from his cheekbone to his jaw. Instead of crying, bursting forth into a frenzy or even running, the mimic-panther simply stood there and laughed. That thin wound already going through the process of scabbing, and soon enough scarring, Derik's clone shook his head and said "Ahh...it's such a pity the world is forced to deal with fools like you, but I suppose it can take consolation in knowing there will be one less to haunt it."

Unsure of what the unique panther was getting at, the poor gangster had just enough time to cock his head to the left with two bright yellow beams of light glaring back at him. Seconds later, a large black hover-van collided with the fool, cutting him in half from the waist up.

Coming to an immediate halt, the side and back doors of the van flew up and spewed forth at least six different anthros in neat black suits and matching shades. One of the men, a lion with fur as orange as the afternoon horizon, touched one of his temples and after shifting his eyes back and forth for a moment, tapped one of his colleagues with a nod.

Tilting his head with a curious smile, the clone panther only managed to get out, "Come to take me aw...," before one of the black suits pulled out a pistol and forced it to release its deadly whistle.

Still trying to make sure the bunny was alright as the shot rang out, Derik instantly turned around in time to see his clone collapse to the ground, a tidy hole now carved into his stomach. Fearing what was to come next, the panther stood with his arms spread out and said brokenly "Do what you want, just don't harm the girl."

The leader of the black suits, an elephant who stood at least 8' tall, looked down at Derik impassively as he stated "Engage Override code 0016774Alpha-Delta, now." In response to this, Derik felt his muscles, his mind and his heart go numb as his neural implant pumped tranquilizers into his system.

Mumbling with as much sense as a drunk, the panther took two steps towards the black suits and asked "Who...what...," before finally collapsing to the ground.

The lion now looked up to his boss and asked "So that really is him, isn't it Zeek?"

In response, the elephant motioned for the rest of the men to pick up Derik's unconscious body and replied "Inform the doctor we've retrieved Subject 66, looks like we're going back to England."

So much was rushing through his mind as Derik Stone finally came back into the land of the living. His eyes flickering open slowly, the panther's body felt like stone, forcing him to merely search his surroundings with his head. Somehow lying on his back with only his pants and underwear on, Derik first looked to his left and to his right to find his arms and legs were cuffed to a large examination table.

Given a few minutes, the panther was finally able to begin his futile resistance as he thrashed his arms and legs against his cold steel restraints. Snarling, Derik looked up as far as his restrained body would let him and yelled "Someone get me out of here!!"

As if Derik were destined to say that, suddenly a set of metal doors slid open, allowing an aged komodo dragon to enter the room. Definitely a scientist, this lizard's green scales were now fading into a near grayish color, causing his white lab coat to actually look decent on him. Chuckling with what sounded like a heavy European accent, the doctor looked down at Derik and said "Ah, sso the little one has finally regained consciousness has he? Well then, allow me to introduce myssself. Derik SStone, I am Doctor Leo Ivanek, and in that ssensse, I could be consssidered the father of all mankind."

Taken aback by who he was now talking to, Derik stopped fighting his restraints and asked "The creator of Darwin's Genesis...but I thought you were human?"

Laughing with what Derik could only assume was a Russian accent; the komodo dragon flicked his tongue out into the air slightly as he answered "Sself experimentation, my dear child. But we can sspeak of ssuch later, for now, know that it is currently the eleventh day of April in the year 2128."

His drugged mind finally clearing up, the panther looked into Ivanek's slit-eyed gaze and wondered, "I've been here...wherever 'here' is, for six days? What could you possibly want from me?"

The answer to those questions came in the form of his restraints suddenly snapping loose and the doctor motioning him to follow. Figuring this would really be his only option; Derik slowly got up and began following the good doctor for his first conscious tour of his new home. In just a few hours, Derik was shown at least twenty laboratories, fifteen examination rooms much like the one he was kept in and finally over three dozen employee rooms. When the two finally reached a large metal door with a retinal scanner and a keypad on its right side, Derik finally managed to ask, "What is all of this?"

Looking to the panther with a smile, the good doctor replied "Your home, my boy. To be more sspecific, we are at leasst four miless underneath the Big Ben."

Utterly surprised, Derik could only say "We're...in London..."

Shaking his head with a smile, Ivanek ignored the comment and continued to say "My boy, you are going to come to learn many thingss about our world you never could even think of imagining. But come, itsss time for you to meet your siblingsss..."
