Ten: Time to Die

Willis looked over the equipment he'd decided upon one last time. Assault rifle, 12 gauge shotgun, grenade launcher and a brace of 50 cal desert eagles. He was all set to bust that club wide open.

"Quite an impressive array of armaments Detective Willis."

Willis turned quickly picking up one of the eagles as he went. He didn't see anyone as he turned so he glanced around the room his other hand reaching for the second handgun.

"Tell me what were you planning to do?"

This time Willis turned and fired, the guns leaving a couple of holes in the wall. Still no sign of the speaker though.

"Redecorating? A little extreme don't you think Detective?"

This time he fired blind at the sound of the voice. Even before he turned he knew he'd done little more than shoot up the wall again.

"Show yourself."

"Why should I detective?"

"Damn you." He dropped the eagles and picked up the assault rifle. He quickly flicked off the safety and swept it around himself in a circle firing on full automatic. He was rewarded with laughter.

"For a police detective with a lot of field work under his belt you seem to be quite a poor shot."

"Come on out and I'll show you just how poor a shot I am."

"Perhaps I might. Oh... forgive me for not introducing myself sooner I am Vladimir Petrov owner of the Deus Vitae."

Willis saw a shape move into the center of the room and whirled the rifle towards it pulling the trigger as he did so. The bullets never hit their mark as the rifle was grabbed and wrenched out of his hands with phenomenal strength. Willis reached back for the shotgun only to find it not there any more. The figure, a large silver furred Lupine, merely smiled.

"What must the neighbors think detective?"

Willis narrowed his eyes and lunged forward swinging with his left. Vladimir merely stepped back a little, grabbed the detective's wrist and with a quick wrench that was accompanied by a loud crack, broke his arm. Willis grimaced and collapsed to his knees.

"Now Detective. I hope you will be a little more civil. I am a guest in your home."

"Fuck you."

"Now, now. Is that any way to talk to the person who has your wife and her sister?"

"What? You..."

"Before you finish that thought Detective allow me to add that they are both unharmed and well. They are my guests at my home and they are receiving much better hospitality that I find here. For shame Detective."

"What do you want?"

"Want? Ah you are indeed perceptive. Your wife and her sister shall remain unharmed if you complete a simple task for me."

"What's that?"

"I want you to kill Detective Jason Fredericks."

Fredericks was muttering to himself about being abandoned in a strange part of town when Johnny appeared from a Chinese restaurant and grinned at him.

"Got the book?"

"Where the fuck.... You went to get food?"

"Yep. Best chow main in town."

"Fuck."

"You seem to like that word a lot. Hope you don't kiss your mother with that mouth Rabbit."

"Fuck you."

"Yes please."

"Fu.... Piss off Johnny."

"Aren't you the ever charming one? Come on."

"Where are we going now?"

"My place."

"Your place?"

"Yep. Well you do want to sit down and read that book don't you?"

"Well.... Yeah I guess."

"Oh by the way about that book."

"Yes?"

"The butler did it."

"You're fucked up you know that?"

"Yep. Although you ain't too normal yourself Rabbit."

"Yeah, yeah whatever. What's this about me being chosen and shit?"

"Chosen?"

"Yeah chosen."

"Oh that. Well we chose you."

"For what?"

"You'll see."

"Just fucking tell me Johnny."

"Patience is a virtue Rabbit."

"It's also something I've ran out of."

"Just wait and see Rabbit, wait and see."

"You want me to kill Jason? But why?"

"Because I want him dead."

"Then why not kill him yourself?"

"That is no fun detective. I would rather an ally betray him."

"What the fuck are you up to?"

"Control Detective, control."

"Control?"

"Yes." He smiled revealing his fangs to Willis for the first time. "Although I have other means of making you do what I want this kidnapping business is so much more exquisite. You should see the look on your face detective. Pain, fear, hatred, confusion. Quite a lovely mix of emotions."

"Go to Hell."

"Many believe we are already there Detective."

"I won't kill him. I can't. I mean..."

"Then your wife will die. Do you want that?"

"No...." He hung his head defeated.

"Good. Now the officers on their way to the sounds of gunfire at this house will help you with that arm and the concoction of a plausible story. Possible a gang hit, or at least an attempted one. Then I expect you to meet up with your friend Detective Fredericks again and do as I have asked. If you do so you're wife will be returned to you unharmed."

"You bastard. I hope you die."

Vladimir merely smiled again.

Eventually they reached Johnny's place. A dump of an apartment in a dump of an area. It fit Johnny to a tee.

"So you going to explain thing to me now Johnny?"

"Read your book first. My friend will be here shortly. He'll answer your questions."

"Fine."

Fredericks opened the book and looked through the contents. It was a large encyclopedia of all sorts of things like werewolves, vampires, different types of ghosts and other weird things.

"You telling me all this shit is real?"

"Read Rabbit." Said Johnny with a mouthful of food.

Fredericks sighed and turned to the section on vampires. He skimmed through the history bits. He wasn't at all interested in a history lesson just on how to kill them. When he got to the part describing their abilities he slowed down and read more carefully. He read about their mental abilities, their ability to control, hypnotize and sway others with words. Their enhanced speed and strength and near invulnerability to most weapons.

"Got that right." He mused thinking about Molly and how he shot her three times. Then he got to the part about weaknesses. He frowned as he found out that garlic, holy water and crucifixes would have no effect. Also it was direct sunlight and not just daylight. Plus they could be active at all times.

"Fuck. What have I gotten into?"

"A lot more than you bargained for that's for sure."

"Tell me about it. Johnny?"

"Hmm?"

"Why are you involved in all this?"

"Why?"

"Yeah."

"Bastards killed my parents. Well one of them seduced my mom and made my dad kill her because she'd become one of them. He killed himself afterwards."

"I didn't know. Sorry."

"Not many people do. I know how you feel about your partner. You're wishing you could go back to before you sent her to check the place out. Tell her not to go."

"Yeah. My fault she's there."

"Don't blame yourself. Those things fuck with people for fun. They'd have gotten to you sooner or later anyway."

"So who we waiting for?"

"The only person to have killed one of them and survived."

"Really? And who's he?"

Johnny laughed. "She's Carmelita and she's a fox."

"A fox as in...?"

"Vixen. But she's hot too. Take her over your partner anyday."

"I thought you were... never mind."

"Hey no worries I'm still holding out for you. Besides she wouldn't."

"Wouldn't? What do you mean?"

"He means I'm a lesbian Detective."

Fredericks hadn't even heard the door open. Johnny was right she was definitely a fox in both senses of the word. She was muscular but slim and athletic. She put Phillips to shame. He Eeeped as he felt Johnny's hand on his crotch.

"Hey!"

"Just checking."

"Quit it."

"Now, now girls" said Carmelita "We have things to discuss."

Eleven: Control

"You are playing games again Vladimir. We all knew this club of yours would lead to trouble."

"Yes. You are walking a thin line indeed. This detective could be trouble."

"Detective Fredericks is no trouble. The matter will be resolved satisfactorily. You forget your places gentlemen. Plus this might bring the others out of hiding."

"The others."

"Ah yes Vladimir. Once again we forget you think of everything."

"Indeed. Do not concern yourself with this matter."

"Indeed."

"Indeed but concerning Azreal?"

"He will not be a problem when the time comes. Besides I doubt he will concern himself with such trivial matters."

"Once again we must bow to your wisdom Vladimir."

Vladimir smiled. Things were going according to plan.

"So... you're saying that this city is run by vampires?"

"That's exactly what she's saying Rabbit. Are you deaf?"

"Shut up Johnny I was asking her."

"Yes. I am saying that."

"So is this like some secret underground resistance movement to fight them?"

"Not really. We've just been played by them once too often. I lost a lover and Johnny his parents. You've lost a partner."

"So it's a revenge club?"

"I suppose so."

"Anyone else in this club?"

"There were others...." Carmelita paused.

"Let me guess they were killed."

"Got it in one Rabbit."

"So it's us three against how many?"

"We don't know."

"Great. That's fucking great. I don't know about you two but I think I'm going to join the oblivious masses again."

"You cannot!" Carmelita was shocked by his response. "They have wronged you. You must want revenge?"

"This isn't a video game. One man cannot take on an army and have any hope of surviving."

"But..."

Johnny cut it. "If the Rabbit wants out then let him. There are others who'll help us."

"But...."

"Carmelita. He is right. We fight a losing battle. We are willing to fight, he is not It is his choice."

"But..." she sighed. "Leave then. Return to your life and pretend the darkness doesn't exist."

"Thank you. I will."

"But know that they own you now. They control you."

"Fuck. My ex wife controlled me. Hey Johnny."

"Yes?"

"Forget that partner thing."

"Oh. Ok. How about that date?"

"We'll see. I've got to survive my decision yet."

"Good luck Rabbit."

"Thanks Johnny. You too Carmelita. Hope you have a high chance of miracles."

Fredericks decided to head back to that shop. Had to give back the book really. He figured it was only on loan, besides that Sarah chick was kinda nice looking. He chuckled. From divorce to cold turkey to back to thinking with his cock. Shame about Phillips but hey. Nothing he could do right?"

"He turned them down?"

"He is smarter than he appears."

"But.... I thought."

"Do not think. It does not become you."

"Gee thanks."

"You are welcome."

"So what do we do now?"

"We continue to watch. He will make his move soon."

"Him? What's he going to do?"

"You will see. You will see."

"I thought you said he'd join us Johnny."

"I thought...."

"Perhaps thinking is something you should stop doing."

"I don't see you finding anyone to help us."

She growled slightly. "It is hard to find trustworthy people."

"Tell me about it. Still Rabbit made his decision."

"Why do you call him Rabbit?"

"I think the long ears and fluffy tail have something to do with it." He grinned.

"I don't know what you're taking but I doubt it's legal."

"This is just pure me babe."

"Then perhaps you should be taking something for that."

Fredericks found the store again after a while. These back streets were like a maze. He made a note to find a guide next time, preferably one who wasn't Johnny. The shop was still open so he went inside and again he found himself in a hazy atmosphere surrounded by all sorts of weird stuff that wouldn't look out of place on a horror movie set. He turned upon hearing the bead curtain again.

"Ah the detective is back."

"I am indeed. Just returning the book you gave me."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome. Er..."

"Yes?"

"How long have you been here?"

"About 6 months."

"There a lot of business to be had here?"

"In Crimson City? Yes. Plenty. Many people here believe in the reality of the occult and want to learn more to arm themselves against the darkness."

"So..."

"You wish to know if I have anything that will help you against the vampires of the city?"

"Good guess."

"You are not joining the crusade Carmelita is on?"

"Nah. I like being alive. Suicide isn't my style."

"But yet you seek my help?"

"Actually I would like to go out on a date with you but yeah I want your help."

"The first I cannot do as my husband would not approve, the second... perhaps. Come back tomorrow Detective."

"Sure... I will." Husband? Damn. Why were the good ones either crazy, lesbian or taken already?

He set off home wondering just what he was going to do in a city controlled by vampires.
