Elite Force: Chapter 1

Chapter 1 of a long dead writing project containing lots of sci-fi, action, and fantasy.

Author's Note: This project has been dropped and resurrected more times than I care to count. Elite Force is a project designed to spawn a furry novel that could legitimately survive in the general sci-fi culture and attract non-furry readers. As you would think, a great deal of science is involved in this, as I simply can't write a book and make the characters furs. Doing so will turn away those who seek a more sci-fi foundation. So I devised a probably evolutionary theory in which anthromorphism could become reality, and could be pitched as a sci-fi story, rather than a furry one. Thus, the sci-fi community as a whole would look at it as more of a new evolution story and less as "yet another gay furry story." But this project is seriously more taxing than I had hoped, meaning I never finished it. From time to time I return to it, hoping to continue, but always my inspiration falls short and the dusty folder containing the dead project sinks into disuse. But still, it calls me back. I consider it an undertaking deserving a conclusion. It was the only writing project I was truly passionate about. If this time fails yet again, then the project will change hands and I will no longer be a part of it. I will be posting chapters here as I recreate them, only the prologue will not end up here. It is the one piece I was never happy with... The foundation that allows this story to survive in a modern literary tide. Comments are greatly appreciated. They help me conform more to what readers want.

Chapter 1

I tossed and turned in bed, reliving my past through my dreams yet again as I had for the last few months. I was there again, with my mother and father, both alive and well as they no longer were. My mother... a beautiful russet colored fox with a creamy white belly. A beauty all her female coworkers envied and the male ones mooned after. She was a nurse of the best training, always knowing just what to do in a patient's time of need. Any time I fell ill, she did her best to keep me in high spirits and bring me back to full health. I loved her more than ice cream or candy and never once took her for granted.

My father was a soldier in The Army, a worldwide group of military power established after the Anthromorphic Terrorism Incident. A collection of the finest human and anthro soldiers to maintain balance on both sides after the anthro's were nearly wiped from existence. (Note: this description of The Army is not present in the original. It is added since the prologue describing it will not be present on this site.) He was a grey wolf with white on his paws and ears, firmly built and kind as could be. I looked up to him more than anyone. I wanted to be like him when I grew up. I wanted to BE him. I was just a brown wolf pup eager to spend time with his family. I will forever cherished those times I had with them.

This dream is of their death, which I remember all too often. I was only nine at the time. Mom and dad were both taking days off to spend the Summer at home with me. We were getting ready to leave for a picnic when the phone rang. Dad answered and his expression was alarmed and worried. A good friend of his in The Army was in an accident and the hospital was instructed to inform my dad under orders from his commander. Plans forgotten, we immediately drove to the hospital to see him, my mom already prepared to do all she could.

When we arrived, Dad spoke with his commander and learned that his friend had been on a plane that had crashed on the runway. He was the only survivor and extremely lucky to be alive. Hours later my mother was able to confirm that his condition was very well, the anthro ability to heal quickly doing much to bring him back to his friends. His name was Jacob, and he was a brown wolf much like myself.

Three days later, my dad and I were at home, preparing our tackle for the fishing trip scheduled for the next day. An hour before supper, someone was knocking on the front door. Dad stopped what he was doing and checked who it was before turning to me and asking that I go to my room and hide. I didn't question him as climbed the stairs, only looking back in time to see the front door open and Jacob step inside. Knowing that my father sensed danger, I entered the emergency safety pod in my room, a device capable of protecting from any form of inclement weather or natural disaster. Once inside, I heard it lock, knowing it had to be my father's control override.

Using the exterior microphone, I could hear Dad and Jacob arguing about something. I thought it was about Jacob leaving the hospital too soon. Then I heard it, the gun shot that took my father's life. I knew immediately, as soon as I heard it, that Jacob had shot my dad. It was the only possibility, Dad never leaving a gun around the house. I attempted to exit my pod, but the lock held fast and didn't budge. Moments later I could hear the sobs of my mother as she came home to discover her dead husband. Her wails lasted only a moment as Jacob silenced her as well. Often times afterwards I wondered why he didn't come for me. Maybe he had a heart after all. Maybe killing a child wasn't something he could do. It didn't matter. Both my parents were dead.

I never heard the gunfight that happened two hours later. I was too busy crying my heart out to listen to Jacob's death song. But I did remember the pod opening to the familiar face of Fredrick, leader of the Elite Force at the time. Saving me was his last favor to my father and his best friend. His unit were well over trained for such a task as killing a lone madman, but for Frederick, it was a task worthy of his time. It was the moment the set the course for the rest of my life.

My dream blurs as time passes. Days pass as seconds as I attended military school to join The Army. Within moments I am once again attending my graduation, receiving a handshake from Fredrick himself. I was nineteen and ready to do my father proud, the last ten years spent learning how to be above and beyond the best. I was top of my class, but it still came as a surprise when I received my first orders from Fredrick of all people. He was handing over control of the Elite force to me, a new generation taking the place of the old. New members, new leader. That day I cried and hugged Fred for the first time, knowing I would do everything I could to bring honor to wolves the world over. To honor my parents.... To honor Fredrick...
