"Since we're partnered up together, might as well make the best of it." She replied grudgingly. "You don't like the arrangement do you?" I asked. "It's not you personally but, I always get paired with the new recruits. Some how I just look guilty or something. You know what I mean?" She stated. "Nothing is as it seems there's always a higher purpose than the eye can witness." I smiled walking past her. Of course her only come back was allowing her jaw to gape wide open.

She didn't speak to me for quite some time until I noticed something unusual on the ground. So I flagged her over but, signaled to be cautious just in case. "Something doesn't feel right about this object any thoughts." I said pointing at it with my field knife. She squatted next to me and spent a few minutes examining the object. I stood back up to keep a watchful eye on our current surroundings. Once I felt the coast was clear I looked back down at, Araya.

"Let, me borrow one of your throwing knives." She asked holding up her hand. So I grabbed one that I didn't care much and had seen plenty of use. If something happened to it I had many more on me in perfect condition. She motioned that we take a few steps back in case it was a landmine. Once we were a decent distance away from the object she threw the knife. When the knife connected the object bounced but, nothing happen. In case there was any kind of delay I picked up a rock and hit the object again.

Nothing happened so I took out my flashlight and pointed at it. The object just so happened to be a rusted old soup can. So I walked over retrieved my knife then reported to our commander. When we entered our make shift command post to give our report. Silk told us that enemy troops had been seen in the surrounding area. So we rushed back to our post to set up some kind of defense if they arrived. As the hours past nothing was seen or heard on all fronts. Throughout the night nothing major happened that was worth repeating or discussing.

As the sun came up over the northern mountain range the townsfolk slowly began leaving their homes. Most of them ignored us just went on with their business. The rest that saw us merely pointed spoke in their native tongue. I was pretty sure they were wondering why we were here. Of course the local police if you want to call them that walked by. One pointed at the whole unit then motioned towards the town exit. In a manner stating we don't need you here get lost.

Our commander walked right up to him from what I could gather he explained why. The soldier looked directly at me then walked away without another word. My only thought was that was going to come back to bite us. Something in my gut told me he had ties to the enemy troops. Once he was gone, Commander Strife walked towards me. He could tell that there was something on my mind.

"Something eating at you, Corey?" He said. "I've got hunch but, that man. I think he has connections with the enemy. Something in his eyes told me he's part of the problem. Sadly, I wish I could prove what I saw in some solid state." I replied. "So I'm not the only one who thought that. You sure you're not a mind reader." He smiled. "Too my knowledge no, sir but I'm strong judge of character." I said. "Well, your just full of little surprises. Let's get a perimeter set up that'll work with the local police." He stated. "Yes, Sir." I replied.

It took us about a couple of hours to get everything unpacked then set up. Once everything was running we went where each recording device was and tested the system. The second we received the green light that everything was working properly. We returned to our make shift base of operations. During the course of the day nothing strange happened. I wasn't about to believe they had backed off. Somewhere I could sense they were watching us intently. From where I vaguely knew where to start looking but, they had to be close by.

Despite this morning's little hiccup we managed to reinforce several cities, towns and villages in the surrounding area. We got word our mission was complete, now we're reporting to a friendly base in neutral territory. It was a seven hour drive but, I couldn't rest. Granted my body wanted to sleep but, I knew that we were still in dangerous territory. So sleeping wasn't such a good idea at least right now. Sadly my commander noticed I was forcing my self to remain awake.

"Corey, get some sleep, you've been up for three days straight. If something happens I'll wake you." Silk stated. I looked at her a moment then looked at Strife he nodded in agreement. So not wanting to disobey a direct order I made myself comfy. No sooner I start to drift off I picked up a strange noise. "Stop the truck now we've got company." I barked. Sure enough an RPG came out of nowhere an exploded in front of the truck. It missed the enter truck by roughly four to six yards. The blast still did enough damage to disable the truck. So we flew out of the back and got into defensive positions. While I checked on the driver and to get him quickly to safety.

Once I opened the passenger door he was hunched over dead. A rock shattering the glass sending shrapnel all over. Some pieces pierced his chest and throat killing him quickly. Sadly there wasn't time to say a small prayer for him. When Jacob rushed over to me to see what the hold up was. When he saw the driver and me frozen in place. He grab my shoulder which snapped me out of my trance. The second he touched me bullets started to rain down on the truck. So he threw me to the ground as the bullets strafed the front section of the truck.

"Damn, kid when this is over remind me to kiss you for warning us." He replied. He quickly stood up and tried to return fire but, couldn't find where that were. "Give me you sniper rifle and tell the others to draw their attention towards the back of the truck." I suggested. Jacob did as I asked of him he gave me his rifle along with two magazines. I crawled under the cab of the truck and waited. So my comrades could force the enemy into shifting their line of fire.

Sure enough the enemies line of fired shifted towards my comrades. I got the scope covers off, lined up my shot and took the safety off. Once I found exactly where they were positioned through the scope. I took my time lined up each shot I double tapped the trigger, then four enemies dropped. Of course my comrades kept the enemies attention on them. My next kill was a man preparing another RPG but, instead of killing him. I lined up the gun pulled the trigger, hitting the RPG he was loading. It went off and took the remaining forces out in a single blast. Everyone waited to see if anyone lucked out and survived.

Once I knew it was all over I passed out from exhaustion. It was some time before I came around. "Welcome, back buddy how you feeling?" Jacob replied. "Fine, just spent after that whole mess." I smiled sitting up in the bed I was laying in. Jacob was nice enough to fill me in on what happened after I passed out. When that RPG went off a friendly helicopter was in the area and noticed it. The pilot figured it best to investigate and assist if necessary. Since they were going the same route we were they gave us a lift to the base.

Sure enough the others heard me up an about so they came in to see me. Commander Strife was concerned more about my mental state then my psychical condition. I told him what I did back there was to honor the driver who lost his life. Strife merely placed his hand on my shoulder squeezed it and walked out. The others left one by one except for Silk, she remained for a while. I could sense she wanted to double check my mentally. Once she knew that I was fine she took her leave.

Sure enough I went back to sleep for another couple of hours. As I slept I felt someone walk up beside my bed. Instantly I sprang up grab the knife from under my pillow and grabbed the throat of my unwelcomed guest. When the lights came on I was holding the throat of my commanding officer. I quickly let go and dropped my weapon before anything else happened. He was a little shocked but, he couldn't help smiling at how I reacted.

"Alright, get dressed we're moving out got orders. I'll fill you in on route to the destination." He replied leaving my room. Once I got my gear ready I joined my comrades outside. From their expressions this mission wasn't going to be pretty. For the next four years things went this way for the unit. During that time we lost four of our comrades due to enemy sneak attacks. Until one hot, August morning things would soon take a turn for the worse.

Our unit was being sent to an unknown location to investigate. The area. For any signs of remaining enemy forces or clues of the leaders. Something about this particular assignment wasn't sitting well with me. Granted I don't think complaining will make thing go away any easier either. As the hours passed the knot in my stomach continued to grow stronger. Whatever was going to occur wasn't what I had hoped for. Sure enough I took one look behind us then out of nowhere. A large explosion followed by a blinding light flooded the area. The shock wave from the blast knocked me out cold.

When I finally came to the first thing I noticed I was tied up, muzzled and bound to a chair. So I did everything I could to get free but, they had used high tension ropes. I listened for any strange or familiar sounds to enter the room, sadly nothing. My chances of getting out of this place were extremely remote. Sure enough I became aware that someone had entered my cell.

From the scent that the person was gave off it was a woman. My hunch was she was the one responsible for giving the orders. That killed four of my comrades two years ago. Now my only concern is what she had planned, though I knew it wouldn't be pretty. In any case I knew there would be no rescue attempt from my unit. That was one of the rules Commander Strife, pointed out on day one when I joined. So I was pretty much on my own, though I'm confident in busting out.

{Who sent you? What are your orders? Answer me.} She barked in some unknown language. She took the time to cut off the muzzle I was wearing off just to answer her. To really give her a hard time I repeated what she said to me. Of course her reply was to hit me with the butt of a pistol. She took a few steps back cocked the weapon then pressed it against my chest. I still refused to tell her anything which didn't help my situation.

As she went to pull the trigger someone else walked into the room. The soldier told her something in the same language then the two left the room. It was an hour before she returned to my cell this time there was a change in her spirit. She walked right up to me then I heard a knife being unsheathed and my blindfold was cut away. I kept my eyes closed to let them adjust slowly to the sudden change in light.

Once I felt confident I wouldn't be bothered by the lights I opened my eyes. Things were a bit blurry but my vision adjusted quickly. Instead of looking around the room I focus my eyes on the door. She walked in front of me but, I didn't bother to look up. The smell of water entered the room still my gaze didn't waver. Much to her amazement I wasn't going to bend to anything including water or food.

{We got off on the wrong foot I'm sure you're thirsty. I would be more than happy to give you some if you wish.} She said. I didn't even bother to reply on the off chance the water was poisoned. {The least you could is say yes or no instead of sitting there like statue.} She replied. To answer her I let out a subtle snort then lowered my ears. {Fine be that way just remember you're only here because we think you have vital info. Maybe if you would just cooperate the sooner you'll be set free.} She stated. "Go hump a cacti." I said.

The two guards in the hall snorted with laughter but, quickly regained their composure. Naturally she didn't like my reply at all so she belted me again. Then stormed out of the room just before she turned the corner, I noticed she was rubbing her hand. Seeing that made me smile I already knew what was going through her mind. After I knew she had gone I put myself into a meditative trance.

It seemed like a few hours passed before someone new entered my cell. This time it was an older gentleman but, he was accompanied by the same woman. "Perhaps, it would seem you want to make trouble for us. I will tell you right now that is unadvisable." He pointed out in a common language. "Whether I play along or don't I'm dead either way so cut the shit." I snapped. He took a step back then left the room and she followed shortly after.

I figured they wouldn't be back for a while, probably to find a better solution. So I decided to get some sleep in the meantime. About three hours later the same woman came back carrying a tray of warm food. {I was told to give you a hot meal, to show our good faith.} She informed. "That's all well in good but, how can I eat it." I replied. She looked at me funny it made sense, since she didn't understand my language. So I jerked my arms side to side which got her attention.

I doubt she understood then she walked towards me pushing the tray over my lap. As she lifted off the cover the steam from the cooked food entered my nose. The smell was wonderful but, something told me that I shouldn't. So I did what I felt was right I turned my nose up at it and closed my eyes. She took it as I want nothing to do with you or this meal. So she took the food and left my cell without a word.

Another hour went by before the man from before returned the look on his fact said it all. "Look, I know you're not happy with your arrangements. My daughter was merely trying to put your mind at ease. The meal was a sign that we have no intention of harming you." He pointed out. "Tell her I'm sorry but, for the record I'm a prisoner and should be treated such. Considering you have me tied to this chair like one. So I'm only behaving accordingly." I stated.

"I see your point we only did that for our own safety. All you had to do was ask & I would have released you." He informed. "You would really let an enemy go or at least unrestrain him. It doesn't make any sense you do realize the second you let me go. I could kill everyone at the drop of a hat." I said. He didn't say anything for a few moments I could see what I said made sense. "Yes I understand were you are coming from but, you don't know the damage your unit has caused." He informed.

"I'm all ears sir so tell me what we've done so wrong." I replied. So he didn't hesitate to tell me everything that we did. Most of it made sense the rest was stupid and unimportant. Once he finished he looked down at me expecting some kind of response. I simply stared out into the hallway as if unphased. That didn't go over to well with him so he reeled back and backhanded me across the face.

"Fine, if this is how you want to be treated then so be it." He barked angrily. He walked out gave an order to the guards outside then walked away. For the next four months I was put the worse kinds of torture that would break any normal person. My training prepared me for this so I remained unbothered. No matter what they did to get me to cooperate it had no effect on me at all.

The only reason why they kept me alive was they felt I had top secret info. Little did they know I didn't know damn thing besides what my comrades taught me. I knew they wouldn't let me go until they broke me. That would most likely take them years to successfully pull off. Well that's exactly what they had planned. It took them three years in total to finally give up, now I'm awaiting death. Well that would be the case if the guards weren't so careless with my restraints.

I'm going to bide my time until nightfall and with my dark fur I'll blend in. Once I get out here I gotta thank Araya for showing me how to dislocated body parts. If she hadn't I would be killed by these people at dawn. Speaking of guards my favorite one is about to pay me a visit. Luckily I was smart enough to listen and learn their language. This way there was no misunderstandings between me and the guards. They were kind of shocked when I asked for the time in their tongue. It was even more a amazing I said it fluently.

{Well, I had a feeling you were awake considering what will be taking place tomorrow at dawn.} She said. {True, tell me something if you were giving a chance to leave this place would you?} I replied. {Interesting question but, if I had to answer it yes and no. I love my father but, there are things he does that I simply don't agree with.} She stated. {Why didn't you say something or suggest another way?} I wondered. {He's my father I can't speak out of line or I'll be punished. Not severely just a harsh scolding followed by a night in a cell.} She replied.

{That certainly explains your behavior when he's around.} I said. {My father may be a tough man but, he loves me. I know he wouldn't do anything to betray my trust.} She pointed out. {I envy you.} I replied. {Why would you envy me?} She asked. {When I was born I had no parents to care for me. I grew up in a place that takes in children who have nobody. That's is why I envy you.} I informed. She didn't say anything I could see what I told her made things a bit clearer. The thoughts going through her mind were deep and troubling that much could be seen.

She decided to leave my cell to mull over what I said to her. As the minutes passed she never returned I guess she got caught up in something else. So I looked out the only small window the cell had. From the looks of things outside the sunset will be in the next 45min. I'm going to wait for the changing of the guards before I make my escape. Granted I have no idea of where to go but I figure that out.

Right now its better I plan a safe and quiet escape without harming anyone in the process. Even though some of the guards deserve it but, in the end their get their just rewards. As I began to plan my escape route my ears picked up on movement coming this way. I believed it was the daughter to the commanding officer, when it fact it was him. Sure enough he was coming to pay me one final visit. Once he walked into my cell the guards out in the hall left. While he could discuss what was on his mind with me alone.
