Human Origins Chapter 3: Interest

A new chapter to my series. Enjoy!

"....."

An eerie silence hangs over the forest bathed in moonlight, as two forms stare at each other. The wind seems to stop, and even the peaceful sounds of crickets are silenced.

"Maybe he's a bit intimidated by me..." I thought as the young human still has yet to answer my question, the look of fear returning to his eyes.

I gesture for the human to sit down and put my shoulder around the nervous guy, giving him a warm smile. "I don't know why he's so sensitive. Sitting down at eye level always makes us wolfen comfortable..." I thought as the human looked away, red with embarrassment.

"It's alright little guy, I'm not going to hurt you. I was just concerned about you, you look kind of cold.." I pull him a little bit closer, sensing how vulnerable he feels.

After almost 5 minutes of sharing my warmth with him , he finally manages to speak, still blushing a soft red:

"I-I'm not a little guy... I'm 20 years old.."

"S-sorry... It's just your face right now... it looks so nice and cute and...eh.. I.. I've never seen a human up close before..." God, why couldn't my father teach me something as useful and simple as conversational skills?! Covering my mouth in embarrassment, this time I'm the one who is blushing.

"Oh.. " he blushes again, scratching his head. "Ehehe, It's not your fault, I do look pretty young.."

He just continues to blush, his brown eyes staring at me with interest. Something about the way he looks at me... feels peculiar. I haven't met many humans, and the ones I did meet were on Death's Row. I'm not too good at reading their body language yet. Well maybe, if I do some small talk, he'll tell me why's he here.

"Well, uhm, once again, my name is Luxikam." Holding my claw out to shake his hand, he hesitates a bit then grasps my hand, his fleshy skin feeling soft to the touch, somehow vaguely familiar.

"Syreth."

"Nice to meet you Syreth, I'm-" Wait... I can't tell him more about me, at least not yet. There's no reason to tell him information about my past life. I'm an exiled prince, so I might as well try to somewhat keep my pride. I've always heard humans look down on us wolfen, so maybe if I tell him I'm from a prominent place, he will give me at least some respect.

"You're a what?"

"I'm a mercenary from Afela." I smile raising my semi-muscular arms, and smile at him, showing my shiny white teeth.

"Wow, really? I've read all about Afela, it snows a lot there, and it's quite far away... you must have traveled quite a bit."

"Yeah, I did... I.. came to visit some relatives in Ashtar." He seems to realize my slight pained expression, as I turn my face away from him, trying to look serious.

"So, enough about me... Syreth... what are you doing out here alone?"

"U-uhm, well it's kind of embarrassing..."

I lay back a bit on the log he's sitting on and relax a bit since he doesn't appear to be an enemy. Syreth says nothing, and his hand reaches out to touch my fur.

When Syreth makes contact, I squirm and he smiles. His hands feel so delicate, and warm. It's something that I'm not used to, but definitely something I can use more of. I start to blush as he continues rubbing my shoulder, it just feels... so good.

"I'm sorry, I'm making you uncomfortable, aren't I Luxikam? It's just... your fur... it's so soft, it just is so tempting to touch. I've never met a werewolf before."

"Uhm, no, it's fine, and we call ourselves wolfen, not werewolves..." For once in my life, I feel tempted to brag about myself, but that would be getting off subject... "But, you never told me why you're out here Syreth."

"Oh, sorry, right... Uh, well..."

"What?"

"I.. can't go home... till I hunt."

My ears rise up, and no doubt he notices, gripping a little bit to my fur. Now, I'm uncomfortable, still no need to be suspicious... just yet. "I see, and just what exactly are you hunting for, Syreth?"

"Luxikam?"

"Yes?"

"Do I look like I'm prepared to hunt?"

"Well..." Looking around, I didn't see any weapons around his campsite. Syreth seemed to be wearing normal clothes, and no knives are on him, neither does he have a bow on his back. Those are the typical weapons humans carry when they hunt, and they usually wear one of our pelts too.

Even his physique seems unfit for hunting, he's shorter than I am, probably around 5"8 and a rather slim build. Compared to my solid 6"0, slightly muscular build, which is actually quite pathetic for my kind, he still looks weaker than me. "No, I guess not."

"Exactly, to be honest... I've never killed an animal before, my Dad used to do all the hunting. *sigh...* He died 10 years ago, the same time my mom disappeared. I've been raised by my stepparents ever since, but my new Dad never knew how to hunt, so now that I'm old enough he sent me out to do it.

We're running out of food at home, and I've been out here for 3 days, and still haven't found anything. To top it off, I've also ran out of food supplies for myself. That's why I was crying.."

"I see..." Another irresponsible father sending their child out here alone, don't they ever learn this isn't the right way to teach their child? Wait, I can use this to my advantage!

"Hey Syreth, tell you what, how about I help you hunt?"

"R-Really?! I-I don't know what to say... You would do that for me, Luxikam?"

"Hehe... just as long as you do me one favor."

He gulps rather loudly, and sweats a bit, making me snicker to myself. "A favor?"

I wrap my arm around Syreth's neck and smile, while he stares at me with those shaking hazelnut eyes. I don't know what it is about these humans that make them seem so fidgety, then again our height difference and appearance does make us kind of intimidating...

"Simple... in exchange for my hunting skills, I get one fourth of the meat, fair enough?"

Breathing a big sigh of relief, he replies: "Is that all? Of course you can have some! Thanks so much Luxikam!"

Syreth's eyes almost seemed to light up as he looks at me as if I am his savior. He stared at me for quite some time, to the point it kind of makes me uncomfortable.

"You really like keeping a lot of eye contact, don't you?"

"Hehe... uhm yeah, anyway shall we get started Luxikam?"
