Chapter 8: Road to nowhere

Spyro woke up and looked over at Cynder. She was asleep with her head next to him. He smiled and got up. He walked over to the river and took a sip of water. The morning air was so refreshing. A wind began to pick up and it swept under his wings. They had been asleep all night so it was early in the day now. He found a few berries and picked them. He ate a few and got a few more so Cynder could eat. Spyro looked up into the sky and saw the UERNF destroyer Archilles hovering a few hundred feet above the dragon temple.

He walked into the cave and found Cynder still asleep. He put the berries down next to her and got up. He walked over to the river and sat down. He walked back to the cave. He saw something sparkle on the cave floor. It was the microphone Wagner had given him for the recon mission. Spyro picked it up and heard a sound come from it. He put it against his ear and tried to hear.

Most of it was garbled or filled with static so he discarded the broken microphone. By this time, Cynder had woken up. She yawned and stretched. She saw Spyro fiddling with a piece of metal and giggled. He heard this and turned around. They both smiled as they saw each others faces.

"Oh my purple hero."

"My black princess."

They then got into a kiss and then broke it knowing they had to get back.

"Well we'd better head back, check on Karson and Allison."

"Yea we should." Cynder replied. They got up and smiled to each other as they took off towards the Archilles. On the way they saw that the UERMC defenses had grown. There were lines, barricades and other things with marines set up behind them. Wagner had said they had at least five hundred and twenty two marines in the area. There were sure a lot of them down there. Spyro could only imagine the number of Lakadors since they said there were three of their ships. He could see them in the distance. Far out there. After flying a bit they reached the Archilles and flew into an open hanger bay.

Although they had no idea where they were going, they ventured inside the ship. After some walking and asking for directions, they found Karson's room. When they walked in, they found him putting on is UERMC armor and Allison was doing the same. They saw them and they smiled. Spyro and Cynder rubbed their muzzles together in love. Karson chuckled and looked at Allison. She smiled back at him. Lt. Wagner walked in at that time.

"Oh Spyro, Cynder, just the two I was looking for."

"What do you need us for?" Cynder asked.

"We are going to launch another raid and I would like you two to be a part of it."

"Sure." They both said looking at each other and smiling.

"We'll help too." Karson and Allison said walking towards the lieutenant.

"Well then gear up; be at hanger bay 7 in ten minutes." The lieutenant walked off into the hallway and Spyro could hear him talking to Lt. Buckman. Ten minutes later Spyro, Cynder, Karson, and Allison walked into hanger bay 7. They saw two Nighthawks with at least twenty marines. They split up, Karson and Allison in one and Spyro and Cynder in the other.

Spyro and Cynder took seats near the back. They sat across from each other. They felt the aircraft lift up and accelerate out of the Archilles. They flew for a while until they heard increased chatter from the cock pit. A blast rocked the aircraft as it tried to go for the target.

"Hold on, we got anti-aircraft fire!" The pilot yelled from the front of the aircraft. The left engine exploded and the Nighthawk started to loose altitude.

"Ah crap we're going down!" The pilot yelled again. Spyro saw Cynder brace herself and Spyro got up and walked over to her to hold on to her to make sure she was safe. A blast once again rocked the aircraft and Spyro (standing up at this point walking to Cynder) was knocked into the air and out of the troop bay.

"SPYROOOOOOOOOO!!!!" Cynder yelled at the top of her lungs as she saw her purple knight tumble out of view.

Spyro tried to regain his balance and take flight to chase the Nighthawk, but the momentum of the blast had sent him tumbling out of control. He hit the ground and slowly pulled himself up. He heard resulting in the bushes and turned his head to see what it was. He heard more of it. He was surrounded. Dozens of apes and ape commanders emerged from the mushroom forest and pounced on Spyro. Spyro knocked the first one off his feet and into the air. He drove his horns into the one behind it and then followed it up with a kick to the groin. The ape fell over and Spyro used his flame breath to keep the others at bay. He held his own quite well. The apes were no match for his superior fighting skills. A bolt of dark energy flew overhead and pinned Spyro to the ground.

"Ha, ha, ha, ha!" A large ape adorned in shadow armor emerged from the group laughing.

"Fang..." Spyro growled.

"So it seems that you have managed to cause us some trouble back there. You are a very troublesome creature. However, you will make a great servant to the dark master."

"I'll never serve you or your pathetic master!" Spyro growled, anger growing in his voice. He tried to get up but the dark energy kept him pinned.

"I'm afraid you will have very little choice." Fang pulled out a dark crystal from belt pouch and it glowed an eerie black. He laughed and started to walk over to Spyro. Spyro struggled with all his might, he even tried to use his breath attack, but nothing worked.

Fang put the crystal against Spyro and he roared as the energy pulsed through him. Spyro tried to fight it but soon felt his limbs grow numb. He couldn't control any part of his body. He felt like he was in a void. He felt anger build in him. He felt power surging through his body. He had never had such power. His skin turned a dark black color, His pupils turned red and his chest and horns took on a darker shade of orange.

He got up and looked around and laughed manically. Fang joined him in his laugh.

"Now that you have been put in your place, I want you to go and stop the humans from taking that temple. Use any means necessary. Oh, and if you see Cynder, kill her."

Cynder shakily got to her feet and looked around. The drop ship had crashed and was a little ways away from the temple. She saw many of the men hunched over in the troop bay. She checked their pulses. Many of them were still alive. One of them was Lt. Buckman. After she woke the living ones, they started to the temple.

"Lieutenant, we have to go back for Spyro." Cynder said catching up to the officer.

"I don't think that's a very good idea. This place is crawling with Lakadors and Apes. Besides, Spyro can hold his own; didn't ya guys say he was a special dragon?"

"Yea, I guess your right." Cynder said sadly.

"Alright then, Jackson! How's our rear?" Buckman called out to his rear guard.

"Nothing moving Lt.!" Pvt. Jackson called out. They push towards the temple hoping to rendezvous with Lt. Wagner's squad.

Karson stepped off the Nighthawk and looked around. Nothing. The rest of 1st squad soon followed. He had seen Spyro and Cynder's drop ship go down and wondered if they were alright. He dismissed this thought when he felt confidence in their abilities. They moved towards the temples entrance. They saw several apes and opened fire. Karson darted for a better shot. One ape emerged from behind a mushroom and Karson put him down with his M74D assault rifle. The .22 cal rounds caused the ape to flip onto his back. He fired a short burst into the mushroom line to detour any more close encounters like that.

After the short firefight, they moved into the temple. Lt. Wagner was lead man. They fought little resistance until they found a large door which had been opened with sheer force. They moved inside and looked around. They saw several apes struggling to get the crystals loaded up before the humans got there. One ape in particular would be a problem. He was wearing shadow armor. Lt. Buckman had said how .22 rounds pinged off of it. Wagner motioned Karson over.

"Put a grenade under the large one and follow it with assault rifle fire."

Karson nodded, pulled the pin from the fragmentation grenade he was holding, and before he could throw it, something hit him from behind. He managed to get the grenade far though. It landed two feet shy of its target and didn't do what it was supposed to do. The large ape was still alive. Karson reeled around to meet his attacker and to his surprise, all of 1st squad had been captured by apes. Wagner was struggling with an ape and two walked over and grabbed Karson.

"Damn you..." Karson said. He heard laughing behind him and the large ape wearing shadow armor walked up to the group of marines.

"So it seems that you have fallen into our trap. The Lakadors seem very interested in you." The ape said to Karson.

"It also seems you are very interested in this girl." He grabbed Allison's hair. He laughed and unsheathed a sword.

"Well as a treat for destroying our operations at the other temple, you will be the guest of honor as I kill your friend."

"You bastard..." Karson felt the anger in him rage. He couldn't do anything to help her though. He had to protect her. He felt something in him, deep inside of him. It was like he remembered something he had forgotten. He felt power surge through him. He felt rejuvenated.

With renewed strength, he pushed the apes off of him and pointed his palm forward. There was a flash of light as an arc of fire erupted from his hand and sailed toward the ape about to kill Allison. The ape screamed as the intense flames boiled away at his shadow armor. The armor exploded off of him like a frag grenade. Karson fired another arc of fire at the ape. He screamed and fell to the floor releasing Allison. What followed was pure chaos.

Many of the apes stood there dumbfounded as their leader was killed. Karson took advantage of this and nodded to Wagner who pushed the apes off of him, grabbed his side arm, and opened fire. Many of the marines did the same. Soon all of the apes were dead. The room shook. The frag grenade had done more then just injure the large ape and kill the ones surrounding him; it destroyed the support for the room.

The room shook and parts of the roof collapsed.

"Fall back!" Lt. Wagner called out. A large rock landed in between Karson and Allison separating them. Rocks fell everywhere and Allison was trapped inside of the room.

"NOOOOOOOO" Karson called out as he banged on the rock in sheer agony as his best friend, possibly his girl friend, (for they had not asked each other out) was trapped inside of a collapsing room. Wagner grabbed his shoulder.

"C'mon we have to go!" Karson reluctantly started to leave but turned back.

"I'll come back for you Allison! I promise!" And with that they left the room as more rocks and metal fell to the floor.

Lt. Buckman led 2nd squad towards the temple. They had heard gun fire in the back ground which meant that 1st squad had touched down. They had moved and were near the temple. Before they went to secure the entrance however, Pvt. Jackson, there rear guard called out.

"Sir Contact in the brush." The whole squad turned to face this new threat and Pvt. Jackson relaxed his rifle.

"It's alright, he's a friendly. It's Spyro." Cynder felt excited that Spyro had caught up with them. She didn't see him but she felt him near by. It felt odd, like something tainted. What she heard confused her as the rear guard got a better look at Spyro.

"What the hell?!" It was then she saw Spyro. It wasn't Spyro. The dragon looked like Spyro and had all of his features, but had a black skin color and red pupils. His horns and chest were also a darker shade of orange. He had a horrible smile on his face and shot out a burst of dark energy. It hit Pvt. Jackson and he fell over screaming as the dark energy killed him.

"That's not Spyro!" Cynder called out.

"I'm afraid it is." Said a voice from the brush. A large ape with shadow armor emerged from the brush and looked the human squad over.

"It appears your friend had chosen to be with the more powerful side."

"That's not true! Spyro would never do such a thing!" Cynder said with tears in her eyes.

"Oh I beg to differ." With that the ape pulled out a dark crystal from his pouch and tossed it in the air. He caught it and put it back into the pouch. Cynder gasped. She looked into Spyro's eyes. They had been overtaken by evil. However, a small trace of purple still remained.

"Spyro?" Cynder asked with tears rolling down her face. The dark Spyro smiled and looked her in the eyes.

"Cynder..." The evil Spyro said in an all too familiar voice that was distorted a bit.

"It's okay Spyro, you can kill her now." Fang said to spyro. He nodded and built up a ball of dark energy and aimed it directly at Cynder.

Lt. Buckman had to do something. He didn't completely understand the situation, but he knew if he didn't do something, they would be dead. He couldn't shoot the black dragon, for Cynder knew him and he did have a striking resemblance to Spyro. Thinking fast Buckman tossed a smoke grenade and called for the squad to retreat. He ran over and grabbed Cynder and ran for the temple.

Cynder looked at her once loving companion as he now wanted to kill her. There was nothing of the Spyro she loved in him. He was only evil. Could she actually have to kill the one she loved?

Allison banged on the rock in front of her. She cursed the fact that she had to be left behind. She heard Karson say something and heard footsteps leading away. She was alone. She thought back to Karson. How could he wield fire, no known human can do such a thing, can they? She was completely lost. She felt a jerk and the ground beneath her crumbled. She screamed as she hit the ground beneath her. She looked around. It was a small chamber built out of the same metal as the room above. There was a pedestal at the end of the room.

She walked over to it. She saw a fist sized blue gem resting on top of the pedestal. She grasped it. It glowed blue along with her body and the stone vanished. She felt cold. A woman's voice echoed through the halls of the chamber.

"Greetings great one. Your arrival has been anticipated for generations."

"Who are you? What is this place?" Allison asked confused.

"This is the place of your ancestors, young one." The voice replied.

"My ancestors? Who are they?" Allison asked.

"The Ancients." The voice replied back.

"The Ancients?" Allison answered back.

"Yes, they are the ones who built this place eons ago."

"What's with the gems, do they have something to do with the Ancients?"

"Yes. The Ancients were renowned for their abilities to harness gems and crystals. The art has been past down to you."

"And Karson, how can he wield an element? Is he also a descendant of the Ancients?"

"All will be revealed in do time young one. You must harness you abilities if you are to stand a chance against our enemy."

"Who, the Lakadors?" Allison was starting to get lost in all of this and wanted answers. The voice did not answer back. Allison felt her self being lifted into the air and light enveloped her and she vanished.

Spyro snarled. He had lost his opponent. Fang walked beside him.

"Don't worry Spyro. We will get her. She will be punished for her treason. In the mean time, I want you to have this. He put the crystal on top of Spyro and it flashed a brilliant purple light and vanished. Fang chuckled. Spyro felt power raging through his veins. He felt more powerful than he had ever felt in his life.

"Now let's go. We need to stop the humans from getting to the temple." They walked off. They came to the entrance and Spyro snarled as he saw Cynder running outside of the temple with more marines. They ran out with some injured.

"You know what you must do." Fang told Spyro and he nodded. Spyro felt immense power growing in his mouth. He had to use it. He aimed at Cynder. She had to die for her treason.

Cynder emerged from the temple with both 1st and 2nd squads. They had met up earlier and found them running outside of the temple. Cynder saw Karson with an anguished look on his face. Allison was nowhere to be found. Cynder presumed the worst. The ground underneath her exploded and she looked up to see dark Spyro standing at the top of a hill across the open field that separated the temple entrance to the mushroom forest. She screamed.

"Run for it!" She yelled. Karson, confused at the time looked up and saw Spyro standing next to a large ape. Confused he looked over to Cynder who was darting for the forest.

"Cynder what's going on? Wasn't that Spyro back there? We have to go get him!" Karson said while running towards the forest.

"No that wasn't spyro, not anymore at least." Cynder replied back tears rolling down her face. Karson remembered Spyro's face back there. His skin was black and his pupils were red. Something had happened to Spyro. Something horrible. A Nighthawk drop ship descended and they boarded it. It pulled into the sky and Karson looked down to see Spyro leap up into the air to give chase. The drop ship was naturally faster then Spyro so he didn't chase for long. Cynder let out a cry of pure sorrow for she had just lost her loved one. Karson felt the same way. The drop ship speed towards the Archilles.

Spyro was angry. Again had she eluded him. He would get her next time. He was going to kill her for what she had done. Fang walked up to Spyro and snickered.

"It won't be long now Spyro. Soon the Dark master shall return. Soon Cynder will be dead and all of those pathetic humans shall bow before us." Spyro smiled at the thought of him killing Cynder. He smiled at the thought of killing all the humans.

"You shall lead an assault to get back what crystals those humans have stolen. We shall take back what's ours and you shall have Cynder." Fang gathered hundreds of apes. He put them all under the command of Spyro as he put an assault together.

Lakador field commander Yahade' looked through his magnification equipment. He saw a dragon with black skin, darkish orange chest and horns, and red eyes. He had read the description of the purple dragon and it matched. (Except for the colors of course.)

"So, do we capture him now?" Yahade' asked Supreme commander Huvunes.

"Let us wait. There is no need to rush. It appears that he has been tainted and will be very little use to us in his present state. However, those two humans and that other dragon are still important and must be taken alive field commander." Huvunes said.

"Yes sir." Yahade' replied.

"If we do this right, the final solution should be close at hand and we shall rid the galaxy of the Plague once and for all."

The Nighthawk touched down in the hanger bay of the Archilles. Karson stepped off and looked into the mushroom forest outside. It was late in the afternoon and the sun was setting. A tear formed at his eye.

"Don't worry Allison; I'll go back for you." Cynder heard him say that and she felt sad inside. They had both just lost the ones they loved. She looked at Karson and knew what she would do to help.

"Karson, I'll take you back to the temple to find Allison." Karson looked at her.

"You don't have to do that Cynder. You probably wouldn't be able to carry me that far."

"I may not but at least one of us will find their love, and I think you should be first." Karson looked at her and smiled.

"Thanks." Cynder grabbed Karson's arms and they flew into the sunset.

Allison reappeared and fell to the ground. She was back inside the room she had been trapped in before. She sat there. She didn't know what to do. Her hand felt cold. She felt energy in her hand. She didn't know what it meant. She felt truly alone.

Pvt. Baldone sat in his trench. He looked over at the rest of Epsilon Company. They sat lazily in their defenses. They saw a shadow and saw a dragon come over the mushrooms. At first they thought it was Spyro so they paid him no mind. But when he took out a full squad of marines, Baldone picked up his M74D and aimed it at the new threat.

Spyro saw this and fired his breath attack. The marine sitting in the trench was blown apart as the powerful dark blast hit him. Spyro chuckled and moved on. He managed to lead the ape army deep into UERMC territory. He saw two figures in the sky heading out towards the temple. He recognized it and took flight after the two figures. He would finally kill the traitor and his master will be pleased.
