Some of you believe that love finds you but, in my twenty seven year life it's never that simple. My name is, Slate Destro I'm a German Sheppard hybrid. For the last nine years I've been working at a small software company. Everyone that I work with likes working with me, so it's a fun work environment. There's no pressure with deadlines we all work at a steady pace. So even if couple people took time off the work would still get done on time.

When life decides to throw a wrench into your rather simple lifestyle. You're never ready for things to come to a crashing halt. Paul, the assistant manager of our branch just hired a new costumer service rep. So I've been given the task of bringing her up to speed. Of course I had no problem with at first until the day we met. Paul had told her to be here for 8:30am because work starts at 9am. Normally I'm usually the first person here around 8am everyone else comes in about twenty minutes later. This gives me plenty of time to get everything up and running.

Now mind you according to my fellow female coworkers they say I'm a solid 7 on the attractive scale when I don't groom. So when I do get groomed they say I'm a strong 8.75. I do appreciate their honesty but, I'm always a bit doubtful. Little did I know what I was in for when the new girl came in. After about ten minutes I heard someone come in I figured it was, Paul. Once she walked into the employee locker room I was completely speechless.

As this beautiful golden retriever walked past me and stopped two rows over. Let me give you a heads up I've had very little experience with single women. I'm fine with my female coworkers because most of them are either engaged or married. So it was a lot easier for me to work with and around them. I did my best to keep my composure until she noticed I was staring at her. If I had to guess her age she looked no older than me give or take a few months.

"Is there something wrong, sir?" She asked politely. "N...No m...ma'am." I stammered. "Are you okay you seem awful nervous?" She wondered. "I'm fine no need to worry about me." I said calmly. "Well, anyway I'm looking for, Mr. Destro, I was told I'd be working under his guidance today. Do you know when he'll be coming in to work?" She informed.

"I'm the man you're looking for and who are you ma'am?" I replied. "My name is, Merle Elena it's nice to meet you, Mr. Destro." She smiled offering her hand. "Please, call me, Slate everyone here does, Mrs. Elena." I said shaking it in return. "It's Ms. Elena, I'm not married since we're on the subject you other half must be a lucky lady." She replied. "Unfortunately, I'm single too no woman sees me as any real value. So they leave me alone even when I try to make conversation. They get pretty nasty towards me so I just walk away." I pointed out.

"Surely, you must have had at least one girlfriend?" She wondered. "Nope I was treated no different now as versed to then which is fine by me. Granted I would love to have someone to spend all of my free time with." I replied. "What do you think of me personally? I wouldn't mind your honest opinion if you want to." She stated. "Well, if you're sure, given the fact we just met. Honestly you could have anything you want with your radiant beauty" I said.

It was too late to stop myself from saying what I actually thought. She stood there as a pleasant smile came to her face. So naturally like a coward I left the locker room without saying another word. "That was a stupid move back there how can I say something like that. Especially to someone I've only known for five minutes. To make things worse she's new, I go and flirt with her. I hope that doesn't come back to bite me in my tail later." I mumbled. So walked over to my work station then got both computers running.

After a while she walked into the cubical and took her seat. She simply got started with the assignments, Francine left on the desk. While she attended to that I got ready for any incoming phone calls. I can admit I've had some really strange phone calls from some shameless people. Though none of them, are really worth retelling now. For some odd reason I couldn't take my mind off her this has never happened before. I'm not entirely sure this work arrangement will work out in the future.

Even in this kind of job there's always one person you can't stand. Especially if you're an attractive single woman is, Daniel. He values himself as the most well bred, attractive and great in bed than anybody else. To be blunt I thing he's nothing but, a royal prick with no morals. The last woman that worked here was unfortunately paired up with him. Sadly she quit three days later because of him. Paul was furious when she up and quit with out telling anyone.

When found out why we felt bad for her but, in his defense I quote; "She couldn't handle my level of hotness. Oh, well her loss there's a long list of women that want me. Hell, they want me so badly they're willing to pay me for my time." Paul sent him home for two weeks without pay for that little stunt along with his comment. When he came back he walked in like the conquering hero. I looked at him like he was the biggest shithead in the world. That didn't go over to well with him when he saw the look on my face. So he tried to start with me but, he knows I'll knock him on his tail.

"What's the matter baby doing you like what you see?" He asked stopping at our cubical. "It's nothing worth twitching my tail over." She remarked not looking at him. I couldn't help but, laugh at her comment which pissed him off. "Got, something to say over there hybrid if not go dry hump a file cabinet. I would hate for you to miss your date with one." He snapped. "Why don't you make the smartest decision of the day and walk away. Before I decide to show exactly what his hybrid will do." I replied glancing over my shoulder at him.

"You don't have the brass stones to do anything to anybody." He smirked. So I looked directly into his eyes and glared deep into them. This usually makes everyone back off considering I have large fangs like a wolf. Merle, was sitting there in total shock to see a German Sheppard staring down a Coyote. Without any signs of fear because I already knew he wasn't going to push me. So he walked away defeated knowing all too well what I would've happened.

"How in the world did you do that?" She asked. "Guys like him are always afraid of being challenged. When it comes to him in particular he's too much of a coward to back anything up. Everyone here ignores him which makes things a lot easier and he's none the wiser." I pointed out. "I gather he's the self appointed big shot." She said. "More like the self appointed stud." I smiled. "Slate, those are some pretty big canines, so he wasn't lying when he called you a hybrid." She replied.

"Yes, I'm three quarters dog and one quarter wolf, it shows up in a few places." I informed. "I can only imagine where else the wolf is present." She said in a soft tone. Of course I didn't have the courage to ask her fearing her answer. I figured she might have been just messing with my head. After break time sure enough Daniel was at his antics again. That man really doesn't know when to quit. You know one of these days I'm going to lose my job because of him. Even if it'll be worth getting fired for teaching him some humility.

Right now I can't afford to lose this job all I have left is my family's log home. So I figured discretion was the better part of valor anyhow. Besides she didn't need my help this time around. "So how about I take you out to dinner on Friday. Then afterwards let me give your body what it really needs." He suggested. "Well, your offer doesn't sound awfully tempting, Daniel. Sadly, I've already made dinner plans with somebody else." She replied. "May, I ask with whom it can't be anybody that works here." He pointed out. "Actually, he's standing right behind you." She said, pointing at me.

This even caught me off guard granted I was thrilled she would even consider me. Let's face I'm no Hollywood movie star, a music star maybe but, definitely not Hollywood. "Why would you even waste your time with that piece of filth? He can't even talk to gorgeous woman he comes into contact with." He stated. Unfortunately, he wasn't lying about that little personality flaw. I knew she was using me as an excuse, so he would leave her alone.

"He seems perfectly fine around me, why you jealous that he asked me." She remarked. "OH! Please, he doesn't know what to say or do on a date. So ditch the freak and I'll show you a real good time." He said. At this point I felt he was overstepping himself so I got involved. "Why don't you let her decide what she wants to do. If she wants me to take her out that's her call not yours. So why don't you crawl back into your hole and simmer for while." I stated walking past him. He remained quiet then slowly walked away from us.

I then turned my attention on her to get the truth from that little drama. "You weren't really serious just then were you?" I wondered sitting in my chair. "Of course I was you're the only guy I've met that treats me like an equal. So what time on Friday will you be coming by to pick me up? That's my day off so you can by at any time alright." She smiled going back to work. I found it kinda strange at first then it must be just an odd coincidence. Naturally I'm always corrected she handed me a folded piece of paper.

"Open it after work I don't need him finding out where I live." She whispered, softly in my ear. It caused my tail to stand straight up then the fur stood on end. When she noticed it, her only reaction was to laugh at my expense. After she had her fill she managed to contain herself she returned to work. Two hours went by then it was time for lunch so I went up to the roof. This way I don't get bothered by anybody, not that I'm nervous. Sometimes you need to get away from your coworkers just to clear your head.

Once I got to my usual spot, I sat down then proceeded to eat my meal. Until I heard someone coming so I stayed quiet till I knew who it was. I figured it was a pigeon scratching around for crumbs. When I became aware it wasn't a bird, it might be, Erica or Paul. They come up here to smoke or talk about things. "Do you mind if I join you, Slate?" Merle asked, as looked up. "Go right ahead, here please take my seat this way you don't get dirty." I said.

So I got up this way she could sit down on my dress shirt. "Thank, you." She smiled sitting down. "No, problem." I replied. While I sat across from her giving her plenty of space. Figuring she wanted it after Daniel's consistent pestering. While I continued eating my meal I became aware that I was being watched. So I looked up to see who it was only, Merle. Though the manner she was looking at me strange. Some how I wasn't bothered by it yet it felt okay.

"Is there something wrong, Merle did I offend you, if so I'm sorry." I said. "You didn't say or do anything, I was merely admiring how attractive you were. I've gathered you've spent quite a bit of time at the gym." She replied. "Yeah I do, I go three times a week for two hours." I stated. "Well, it certainly shows just by looking at you. So what gym do you work out at?" She replied. "Willow Training Hall on West Main Street every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday night." I informed. "That's funny I go there myself on those days but, I don't see you there at all." She stated.

"That's because I use the private work out area in the back." I pointed out. "Okay, that explains everything." She said. "Is there anything else you would like to know?" I asked, cautiously. "Yes, I've figured out you get real nervous around women. Especially pretty ones even the kind you first meet." She pointed out. I couldn't bring myself to say anything all I did was look away then lowered my ears. That was all she needed to know of course I felt like a total child. So naturally I got up, left and went back inside without a word.

Once I returned to my desk I got back to work, twenty minutes later she came back. Nothing was said between us for the rest of the afternoon. She must be thinking that she struck a rather sensitive subject with me. All that went on in the cubical was our laundry list of tasks. When our shift came to an end everyone packed up then headed home. I'm usually the last person to leave the building. So once everyone went home I finished a few things at my cubical.

I went around the place putting unused things back into the storage. This normally takes me about an hour to two hours depending on how busy everyone was. Little did I know that, Merle had stayed to, I found out when I returned to my cubical. She was sitting in her chair with only the desk light on. I guessed she wanted to talk about what happened at lunch which I knew would occur. "Slate, is something wrong you haven't talk to me since lunch. Was it because of what I said?" She asked.

"No, I have a lot on my mind don't worry about it." I said. "I still feel like I offended you." She replied. "Don't concern yourself with my feelings I'm complicated." I pointed out. "Why are you acting so nervous around me I don't bite. Please, tell me what's wrong maybe I can help you." She suggested. "You would most likely laugh at me if I told you." I replied. "I will do no such thing to a good friend, so what's wrong I want to know." She replied.

For some reason I felt her intentions were indeed genuine. So I sat down in my chair, I let out a depressed sigh. I started telling her everything that causes my strange behavior. While I talked I looked up at her, she sat there with a soft smile. She hung onto every word I said which nobody has ever done before. Especially when something like that or worse is bothering me. It was such a welcomed feeling to experience in my mind honestly.

As I continued speaking she placed her hand on mine my first instinct was to pull away. Until she held it in hers, she could tell how long I've kept this bottled up. After a few minutes she moved besides me then rested her head on my shoulder. It didn't bother me that she was doing this to me, it was enjoyable. Once I felt there was nothing left to say she sat up as I turned to face her. I could only imagine what was going through her mind at the moment.

"That's pretty much everything in a nut shell, so any questions." I replied. "How do you feel with me sitting right here with you?" She asked. "In all honesty I feel complete like a missing piece to my puzzle has been found." I said. She stood up walk by gave me a pat on the shoulder then left. As she reached the elevator door she turned to face me. "You can open that note whenever you're ready." She smiled as the doors closed.

Once she left, I grabbed the note she handed me before lunchtime. It contained her address, phone number and an arrow pointing at her desk. So I looked over to where it was pointing another note was sitting under the desk light. I got up walked over to it picked it up then sat back down to read it. At first I wondered if what was on it was something personal. Maybe I shouldn't go digging into but, it does have my name on it.

So I opened then proceeded to read it the note said; "Slate, I understand where you're coming from it's nothing you should be ashamed of. It was simply how other people treated you as you were growing up. You're not the only one who understands the feeling of isolation. So don't feel like you're the only one out there. When you feel ready I want you to come over to my house to spend time with me. I would love to have your company but, call ahead first. Your loving friend, Merle."

I couldn't believe what I was reading I guess she sees something in me. So what did she find in my soul that's so special. It can't be my pedigree or my looks that's for sure. What has her so enticed with me? The only thing I can think of doing is to go visit her. Hopefully I can survive until Friday night maybe she won't put me under any kind of pressure. The only thing I'm praying is that nothing comes up at work. That the two of us have to leave and attend.

So I punched out for the day then made my way out to the parking garage. Once I got to my floor, got in my truck and drove home. During the course of the night I couldn't sleep. What was written on that note kept bothering me. Until I drifted to sleep on the couch a short time later. When I awoke I had to move my tail or I'd be late. Granted I'm usually pretty good getting to work on time but, I do make mistakes. When I got to work, most of the day went no differently than yesterday. So once my shift ended I left and headed towards the parking garage.

As I walked to my truck I noticed somebody was still here. Once I got closer it was, Merle. She was trying to get her car started but, it wasn't hearing it. "Care for some help?" I asked as she turned around. "Please, for some reason it won't crank." She replied. I walked over popped the hood poked around. Something in my gut told me the car needed a push start. "Looks like we're going have to pop the clutch to get it to turn over." I said. "What do you know about old cars?" She wondered. I simply pointed at my very old pickup truck nearby.

So I explained to her what I had planned to get it started. She was a little worried that it might hurt the car. So reassured that something this wouldn't even tickle it. The older car is the better built they are, versed to newer models. I had her sit in the driver's seat then I pushed the car out of the space. Then had her push down on the brake pedal and shift into neutral. Once I knew the car wasn't going to move I walked out of the way. She let up off the brake once I felt the car was going fast enough I told her to start it. Sure enough it fired right up, kept it running, then applied the parking brake.

"There you go, Merle but, before the end of the week get that looked at. If you want take care of it first thing tomorrow morning or which ever is easier. I'll see you tomorrow morning bright and early." I informed, as I walked away. "Wait!" She said walking after me. "Please, don't tell me it stalled." I whined. "No, I believe you deserve a small reward." She smiled kissing my cheek. She then stepped back, turned around, walked back to her car and drove away. Once she was gone I fell to the floor in shock. Personally I don't think I could handle something like that again.

When I regained my sanity I got up and drove myself home. As I pulled into my driveway I saw another car parked there. Mind you its dark out, I live at the edge of a forest, have no porch light and my headlights are off. The only question whose car was that, since my other car is in the garage. So why are they here and how did they find out where I lived. Once I shut my truck off, I got out walked towards my front door.

"I've been waiting for you, Slate I was wondering if you had gone to the gym." Merle said. "How did you get my address?" I wondered. "The company database has everyone's current addresses on file." She replied. "Since you're here come on in and join me for dinner. Unless you needed something from me that I borrowed?" I said. "Dinner sounds good to me, besides I wanted to spend some more time with you. Possibly in a more private manner instead of at work." She stated.

The only thing going through my mind at this point was why she was acting funny. For some reason my instincts knew what was going on she wanted something but, what. "Shall, we go inside before you decide to pass out on me again." She said. "How did you know I did that?" I wondered. "I saw it happen as I turned the corner." She informed, as she gave me a loose hug.

"Please follow me inside and make yourself at home." I smiled, as I opened the front door. After dinner we spent quite a few hours talking when I finally looked up at the clock. I didn't feel safe with letting her drive home at this hour. "Merle, why don't you spend the night there's no sense driving home at this crazy hour. Plus tomorrow's our Friday no need to go into work." I suggested. "Sure I would love to but, I have no spare clothing." She replied. "I'm sure I could find you something decent for you to wear at least for tonight. Just give a few minutes to find something for you, okay." I stated walking upstairs.

Little did I know she followed me upstairs, until I turned around and saw her standing under the hallway light. Something about that short moment I knew she was truly special. Maybe that instance told me it was time. "Is there something on mind, Merle?" I asked. "Do you mind if I use you bathroom before I turned in?" She wondered. "You are welcomed to anything I have, so feel free to do as you please." I smiled. She kindly walked into the bathroom. While she was in there I got the bed ready for her. This way she could settle down for the night.

Once I took care of that I went into my room, got undressed, put on some sleeping pants. I walked back downstairs, locked the doors, turned off the lights and returned to my room. Twenty minutes later she walked out of the bathroom so I went in myself. When I came out she was lying down in the guest bed, I quietly walked by her. After about an hour I turned in for the night after reading a book. So I turned off my reading light then I rolled over and went to sleep.

During the night I awoke to the sound of, Merle walking down the hall. I figured she was going to the bathroom so rolled over and tried to go back to sleep. There was a knock on my doorway so I sat up to see her standing there. I felt a strange vibe coming from her so I got up to see if everything was alright. She decided to meet me in the middle of my room then she wrapped herself around me. "I can't sleep is it alright if I stay in here if that's okay?" She asked.

"Sure it's no trouble at all, Merle go right ahead." I smiled. She let go of me a walked slowly towards my bed. Once she laid down I walked over to the opposite side. After a while she did fall sleep from what I could tell in the darkness. I sat there watching over her it was like I had passed some kind of test. She was my long awaited reward for being so patient around so many people. Then she rolled over placed her hand on my thigh which caused a repeat of Wednesday afternoon.

She simply brushed the fur back down then she sat up kissed me, and finally went to sleep. For the rest of the night I sat there watching her making sure she was comfortable throughout the night. While she slept so peacefully many things were going through my mind. I had never felt this way about any woman I've ever met. Somehow, Merle was different almost like a rare flower had found its way to me.

I realized that she was going to love me for who I was not what I was. When you think about it love has no set value. Unless it's with someone that's truly special to your heart. So I guess I finally found the woman meant for me after all. Now my only task now is to make sure I treasure every single moment we're together. Hoping that it lasts until we're both old and grey. I do hope for you that your time will come when you least expect it.

Thank you for reading my tale,

Slate.
