Chapter One: Summer's End

, , , ,

This is a new idea I had and will, with any luck, be a weekly or semiweekly thing. New chapters and all that. It starts clean "slice of life" ish, but it will probably get more naughty later...keeping in mind plot and character development are my primary focuses here right now.

Let's look at the characters so far:

_ Victoria Pearce: Single mother of two, she is 30 years old and has a job she enjoys. She struggles with her twins, but the vixen loves her children._

_ Modest Pearce: Thirteen year-old female half to her twin brother, Modest is intelligent and well-behaved, but gets into trouble as any child does._

_ Marcus Pearce: Though he fights with his twin sometimes, thirteen year-old Marcus loves her. He, like his sister, is intelligent, but he gets into more trouble than his two-minute-younger sister._

_ ~Chapter One~ _

The two fox children, green eyed and rust-furred, laid in the setting sun, staring at the pink and violet clouds above them. Marcus, the older of the two by two minutes, looked over to Modest.

"School tomorrow," he said morosely. "Are you ready to start eighth grade?" His sister shook her head.

"I bet we get Mrs. White," she said with a delicate shudder. "She's supposed to be really mean."

"Nah," Marcus replied, "we won't get her. Jimmy promised." Jimmy, Marcus' best friend since fourth grade, had a favorite aunt who worked in the office at the school, and was good at "predicting" certain things at the school. Marcus had learned to trust his word.

The boy sat up sharply.

"It'll be awhile before we can swim," he said, "considering homework...let's go!" Modest looked at him uncertainly, sitting up as well. "Don't worry," Marcus said, sensing her disapproval. "Mom won't catch us. We'll swim in our underwear so she won't be able to tell when we go in!" Modest smiled.

"Okay," she said, "I guess that's fine." The got up and, after a quick look at the house to see if mom was watching, ran down to the river a couple hundred yards from the house. Once there, they stripped down to their underwear and jumped into the gently flowing clear water.

"Oh!" gasped Modest, "it's really cold!" But she stayed in and the two swam until the sun had set completely. Only then did they climb out and shake off, then dress in the dark before running back to the yard as their mother stepped out to call them inside. As they ran past their mother to go to their bedrooms, Victoria grabbed Marcus by the arm.

"Mind telling me," she said sternly, "why you're wearing your sister's shirt?" Marcus looked down and sure enough he had put on Modest's pink rose shirt by mistake, not being able to see in the dark.

"Umm..." he said dumbly. He looked blankly at his mother while modest stared at her feet.

"Your fur is damp," Victoria continued. "You went swimming." It was a statement of fact, not a question. She sighed and shook her head. "Go upstairs," she muttered. "Bed in an hour," she yelled as they ran up the stairs.

They did not slow down until they reached Marcus's room and flopped on his bed, giggling.

"I thought we'd be grounded," Marcus said. "She did tell us no more swimming a few weeks ago." Modest sighed happily.

"I love mom," she breezed. The two locked eyes and smiled broadly at each other. "We'll have a good day tomorrow," they said together.

The next forty-five minutes were spent getting ready for bed, which involved the twins going into their seperate bathrooms and brushing teeth, taking baths, and getting into pajamas. Once that was all done, they went downstairs to get a drink of water before bed and say good night to their mother, who was curled up on her armchair with a notebook on her lap, frowning at the paper as she worked on something in panties and a long shirt. She looked up as the twins approached.

"Hey M&M," she said, smiling as she said the pet name that had developed for them. "Tomorrow I'll drop you off at school, I have to be at work early. We have a morning briefing. Have you brushed your teeth?" They nodded and each took a side as Victoria hugged them close. "Good night, lovelies. Sleep tight." They went to their seperate bedrooms and climbed into bed, Marcus sleeping in a Star Trek themed room and Modest in a very floral environment. The two hadn't slept in the same room in four years, since they had started puberty. It was something they had trouble getting used to, but now was natural.

Their lights went out and the twins slept deeply.
