Basically the pre-writing to the intro for "Shadow of Brooklyn", a story I plan to write eventually.

Rocco crouched as he peered around the corner of the desolate Ukrainian hotel in the middle of Kiev. He was hesitant to continue with his patrol,Kiev was becoming the center point for the Soviet Army's mortar and missile bombardment, a tactic that proved both deadly and effective. He was two weeks from finally returning to Brooklyn after two years in this hell hole of a country that was already in ruins from continuous war and famine that became increasingly common in Eastern Europe after the reestablishment of the United Soviet Republic; a modern day Soviet Union. He cared little for the reasons behind the war though, and only wanted to get home as soon a possible, back to the life he left for the rush of combat he soon lost after his first tour of duty near the Ukrainian border.

As he raised his M27 IAR and ordered his squad down a narrow alley, Rocco began to think to himself, "perfect place for an ambush, stay vigilant Delacroix, you've lost too many men in similar situations."

"Hey sarge, you think the reds are waiting on the other side of this alley for us? Seems like the perfect place for a. . ."

Blackmoore cut himself off; he already knew Rocco's answer. They've been in Ukraine together since they were first deployed in 2013. He knew what every movement meant, and the reason behind it. The young Marine had become predictable over the past two years; the look in his eyes said it all.

"Blackmoore, take Bradley and Campbell with you, see if you can't find a position within the hotel where you can see the road in front of us."

Rocco had been dropped into a similar situation two months prior, back when he was still second in command for his squad. His sergeant ordered them to continue up the alley without posting forward recon of the surrounding area first. It led to his sergeant's death and the death of four other Marines. The Soviets were fond of catching Americans in a tight alley or street where cover really wasn't an option.

Blackmoore, Bradley and Campbell started up through the abandoned hotel to see if they could find an opening that had a view of the road in front of them. After an eight minute "breech and sweep", they finally found a room with a decent view of the surrounding area two stories from the rooftop of the hotel. Blackmoore was unable to spot anything that looked suspicious, but didn't want to take any chances.

"Bradley, Campbell, we're moving up to the roof, use your binoculars to scan the area for anything out of the ordinary, I don't want to take any chances with Sarge in that alleyway."

The three Marines headed up to the rooftop. As they reached their destination, they came across the body of a rotting Ukrainian Ultranationalist.

"Ah Christ. . . It looks like he's been here since the war began. . ."

Blackmoore contained himself. While the smell wasn't particularly pleasant, they had a job that needed to be done, and one dead body was surely lucky compared to what could have been on the roof.

"Alright gentleman, we're on post until Sarge gives the signal to meet up at the rendezvous point. We're not taking any chances on this patrol, so keep your eyes and ears sharp."
