Chapter 5

The dismissal bell rings, and I should be happy like most kids, but the dismissal bell signaled my daily beating to me. I have a plan though. I brought all my stuff I need to bring home with me in this class, so I can skip my locker, and go out the back way. I pray it will be successful.

"Happy birthday, queer." Says multiple furs as they leave the class. Today is my birthday, yet it doesn't feel too great. "See you at your locker, hoe." Says others. They made a stupid rumour about me being a voluntary sex slave, and have called me 'man whore', or other variations since.

I gather my stuff, and cautiously head towards the back way of the school. I turn around and notice a female domestic cat following me. When she spots my eyes on her, she scurries away.

I continue to walk towards the back exit, and when I get out, I found the cat outside, holding a box that was wrapped in wrapping paper. On the box, lays a written note. She hands them to me, gives me a slight nod, then walks away. "Th-thank you?" I say quietly.

I sit on the ground with the box, and read the note. It reads: 'Dear Tobi; I want to wish you a happy birthday. Please stay strong. Meet me at the school tonight at 6:00. Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you. Enjoy your gift. -Kat'

I wonder if she could be trusted. But I don't know what else they could do to me that they don't do to me daily. I slowly tear off the wrapping paper, and find a bunch of books about nature, and a beautiful special flag that was made into multiple colours in a rainbow pattern. I smile, and hold the gifts close. I am definitely going to meet her today. "Thank you." I whisper, and walk home.

When I get home, I find Mom greeting me. "Happy birthday, son." It feels good to be called 'son.' "I don't have any money, because of Dad leaving. So I don't have any gift." She frowns. I have never seen her care so much about me. Since I've come out, she's changed. "Don't worry about it, Mom." I say, and smile.

6:00 approaches on the clock, and I put a few things into a bag, tell Mom where I'm going, and head to the school. I get there, and Kat, the girl who gave me the gifts is there. "Hi, Tobi! Follow me!" She shouts, and takes me a little bit into a forest. Near the border of the forest, she leads me into a clearing, which is surrounded by trees in a circular pattern. There is a small stream running through the clearing as well. "Do you have your rainbow flag with you?" She asks, and I reach into my pocket and pull it out. She wraps it onto a branch on one of the trees. It waves proudly into the air, catching the wind, and riding it. "I'm on your side, and I really want to be your friend. But we can only hang out here. If others see me talking to you, they may target me too. You can bring your other friends as well, and we can hang out here during the summer." She smiles at me.

I hear movement from nearby. A pair of eyes scurry away, when I turn my head to see. I brush it off, and nod. "Okay, I'll invite my friends here in the summer." I say. We talk here until dark, then I say good bye, and head home.

I get home, and get to sleep fairly quickly. Tomorrow is the last day of school before summer, and I'm very excited.

I awake the next day, and head straight to school. We barely do any work today, and the day seems to fly by. As I'm on my way out the back exit today, I suddenly hear a loud gunshot. Everyfur panicks, and screams, and an announcement comes on, and signals that we are going into 'lock-down'.

All the doors lock, and all the windows are shut, and all the furs are hiding out of sight. We remain this way for a very long time. After a long time of waiting, they finally declare it's safe to leave.

The furs rush out the door, and rush home. But I stay out in the hall to look around for a bit. That's when I notice where the bullet was directed to. I see the hole in the wall, right next to where I was, at the time of the shot. Someone was trying to shoot me. And came so close.
