Chapter 3: Paths meet

Pvt. Mcfay looked down at Alpagee city from the destroyer Archilles. She was searching for Karson's drop ship. Instead, she saw a large nuclear blast rock through the city. Her face went pale with fear as she desperately wanted to know if he was down there during the blast. Lt. Wagner stepped into the room. He saw her and she saw him. She looked into his eyes, pleading to know the answer. The Lt, who couldn't bear to tell her vocally, simply broke the gaze and shook his head leaving the room. She saw a tear fall from his eye. She then burst into an uncontrollable wave of tears. She sobbed as she remembered her friend. All those times he helped her in school, when he stood up to that bully to save her. He had always had her back. He had always looked out for her. Now he was gone. She cried uncontrollably until she felt the ship flare to life as it ascended into the atmosphere.

"NOOOOOO!" She cried as she watched the mushroom cloud disappear beneath the clouds.

Captain Harder stood looking at the viewing screen. He had ordered the Archilles to ascend as soon as he saw the mushroom cloud appear above Alpagee city. They had to escort the Threshold past the Lakador blockade along with the remnants of the 7th battle group. All that was left was 2 destroyers, 4 frigates and the admiral's cruiser. As they smashed the Lakador defenses they accelerated away from Sirus 12. They had to accelerate in order for their wormhole generators to allow them to make a jump.

An energy beam hit the ship. It had struck in just the right spot to fry the navigational command circuits on board the ship. In other words, it replaced the coordinates for Desmal (One of the UER's colonies) with a randomized vector.

"Sir, the coordinates have been randomized! Probably from a hit to the navigational circuits. It will take some time to re input the coordinates to Desmal!"

"Captain! Enemy ships charging up their main guns!"

"Lieutenant, just use those coordinates! Just get us out of here!"

"Aye sir."

And with that they sped towards an open wormhole and vanished inside of it. Unfortunately, two enemy ships followed through before the hole vanished.

The Archilles emerged from the hole. "Status?" Captain Harder asked.

"Sir the wormhole generator is damaged; it will be a while before we can make another jump!"

"Damn it." The captain muttered.

"Sir there's a planet coming into view." As the Archilles cleared a large asteroid the captain saw the planet.

"Accelerate towards the planet."

"Aye sir" The captain slumped into his command chair thinking. How am I going to explain this one to Admiral Freeman? His thoughts were interrupted by his 1st lieutenant.

"Sir, enemy ships emerging from hyper-space!"

"How many?" The captain said straitening himself in his chair.

"Two sir!" The captain swore under his breath. Two against one? They wouldn't last long out here. As they neared the planet and aligned themselves in its upper atmosphere the captain decided to take action.

"Lieutenant, fire missile pods A-1 through A-7, and arm the rest. Fire the rotary guns!"

"Aye sir. Sir, the enemy ships just opened up! We have inbound proximity lasers!"

"Use evasive maneuvers!"

The ships accelerated. Missiles and dense rotary rounds knifed through space. Deadly balls of energy and precision lasers raced in the opposite direction. It looked like a light show dancing between the three ships.

Allison lay on her bunk. She was in deep depression since they left the Zeta Reticuli system. Her friends had offered help, but she wouldn't budge. Lt. Wagner stepped into the room. With a deep sigh he walked over and tapped her shoulder.

"Mcfay, c'mon you need to gear up. We have been called to do a planet side operation." She slowly got up and the lieutenant saw her tear stricken face and was almost brought to tears himself.

"Listen Mcfay, I know your upset about Karson but what would he say if he saw you moping around! Now damn it you've got a duty to perform."

She looked at him for a brief moment and then stiffed to attention. She gave him a crisp salute which he returned.

"I'm sorry sir; I don't know what came over me." She almost choked when she ended the sentence. He could tell she was fighting to hold back the tears.

"That's better. Now gear up. Captain wants us to explore a planet in this system we have come into." He gave her a pat on the shoulder and left the room. With a sniffle she donned her armor and equipment.

She and the rest of 1st platoon shuffled into the hanger bay with four UERMC Nighthawks. She got on one with Lt. Wagner. The troop bay door closed and she felt the ship lift and leave the hanger bay. Lt. Wagner put on his black sunglasses and stood up as the ship left the Archilles.

"Alright here's what's going on. We have 2 enemy ships out there blasting the Archilles.

It's our job to go planet side and secure a landing zone for Archilles before she's destroyed." He sat down across from Mcfay. He saw her struggling to hold back the tears. He considered getting up and comforting her when a large bang resonated through the hull.

"Ah Christ! We have Lakador fighters trailing us!" The pilot screamed. He keyed his mike.

"Bravo 2 this is Alpha 3 we need assistance! We have 2 Lakador fighters on our tail!"

"Roger Bravo 2 en route. Hang tight." The pilot saw several tracers from the UERNF Raven's 40 mm cannons streak by the window. They were later accompanied by the burning hulk of a Lakador fighter burning in the atmosphere. The second fighter shot off a burst from its pulse lasers at the Nighthawk before breaking off to engage the Raven. It didn't get the chance though as a Javelin anti-air missile found its target. The right engine of the Nighthawk exploded and they flew into the atmosphere. Although the fighters were gone, they couldn't control the decent of the aircraft as she went spiraling into the atmosphere. Lt. Wagner sat tight hoping for the best. Not for his safety, but for the safety of everyone directly under his command.

Spyro sat there looking at the light show in the sky. His attention was glued to a light that seemed to be getting closer. No. He thought. Not a light, an object. He saw it fly down and smash into the forest beneath them.

"C'mon lets go check it out." Spyro said looking at Cynder. From the look in her eyes he could tell she was thinking the exact same thing. They both took off towards the crash site. A door was open that led into a cavernous room inside. Inside were several figures spread across the floor.

"Spyro?" Cynder shot him a quick look.

"Yea" Spyro returned her look.

"Don't they look familiar?" She was right they did look familiar. Then it hit him. They looked extremely similar to the creature in his dream. He heard moaning from several of them meaning they were still alive. One picked his head up only to faint at the sight of what he thought was a Lakador here to kill him.

"Cynder, go get the elders, we may need some help." She nodded and flew off towards the temple.

"This is the same creature I saw in my vision." Ignitus said, hovering over a UERMC marine that lay stretched out on the floor. They had recovered at least fifteen from the site. Three of which they believed were dead for they weren't breathing. One moaned and everyone huddled around the one marine. He had some sort of visor over his eyes so they couldn't tell if his eyes were open of not.

"Can you hear us?" Ignitus asked the marine. He grunted in response.

Wagner slowly opened his eyes. He heard voices around him. He saw several figures standing over him. His vision finally cleared to his dismay as he saw what he thought were Lakadors preparing to interrogate him. He quickly reacted. He reached for his side arm, thanked god it was still there and raised it at one of the figures.

Ignitus saw this and realized it was some sort of weapon. He reacted quickly by pinning this new foe to the floor.

Wagner cursed. He tried to aim his pistol and fire it. He fired it anyway as the large creature pinned him to the floor.

A loud CRACK and large flash came from the hand-held device and soon everyone was on top of the creature.

"Calm down!" Terredor said as he held one of the creature's arms down.

"Yes, we don't wish to fight!" Ignitus said as he held the creature's other arm.

Wagner was relieved. They didn't want to fight. He let the weapon clatter to the floor and calmed him self. The dragons let him go and he stood up.

"M-my apologies, it's just that you look like them." Wagner said as he realized they looked similar to Lakadors, but then again Lakadors didn't have wings or horns.

"We look like who?" Spyro asked this visitor.

Wagner didn't hear the dragon. He had his mind on the marines that lay in front of him.

"Where are we?" He asked the large red dragon.

"You, we, are in the dragon realms." Ignitus said rather prideful.

Wagner walked over to Allison. He checked her breathing. Her chest rose and fell as she in haled and ex haled. Good, he thought. He went on to check the others. He sighed. Three were dead.

"And who might you be?" Cynder asked him.

Wagner looked up at her." I am Lieutenant Jonathan Wagner." He felt proud as he said that.

"Your name's lieutenant? That's one weird name!" Sparx said rather sarcastically. All the dragons in the room shot Sparx an annoyed glance. He smiled and flew around.

"No, Lieutenant is my rank in the military. Jonathan Wagner is my name."

"You're in the military?" Spyro asked rather curios.

"Yes I am. I am a member of the United Earth Republic Marine Corps. Our duty, defend Earth and all of her colonies." He then heard Allison grunt and she picked her head up. When she saw the dragons she screamed.

"Whoa, there. Don't worry, they're friendly." Wagner told her.

"Are you sure?" She asked, worry in her voice.

"Well if they weren't I wouldn't be standing here now would I. Allison this is er..."

"I am Ignitus. This is Spyro, Cynder, Terredor, Volteer, Cyril, and the annoying one over there is Sparx." Sparx crossed his arms and scuffed.

"Hi, uh I'm Private Allison Mcfay."

"I suppose "Private" is a military rank also?" Ignitus said as he looked a Wagner.

"Yes it is. A lower one but nonetheless, a rank. Ah, hold on a second." They watched him curiously as he walked to every human on the floor and retrieved their side-arms.

"There, that way they don't freak out and start killing everybody with these." They all nodded remembering how Wagner had reacted to seeing dragons.

"So you guys are dragons?" Allison asked.

"Why yes we are." Cyril responded.

"Uh, can you guys... you know..." Wagner said trailing off.

"Can we what?" Ignitus asked.

"You know,... breath fire?"

"Why yes we can, er... some of us." Ignitus began.

"Oh fire is for chumps, ice is a true power." Cyril started.

"Oh Cyril always being obnoxious, always the more oblivious, electricity is the only true exhalent that is worthy of recognition." Volteer challenged Cyril.

They all started to argue this way and that which breath was the more powerful. Wagner cocked an eyebrow at spyro.

"Uh yea. You see when a dragon is born they con only use one of four elements: Fire, Earth, Ice, and Electricity. The elders here are the masters of their own elements."

"Ah I see." Wagner quickly did a bout face when there was a slight tak, tak, tak, in the distance. He then looked back at spyro.

" Can you take me back to the crash site?"

"What for?" Spyro asked with a worried look on his face.

"I need to get our gear. And we also need to link up with the rest of Alpha Company."

"Uh, how will you get back there?" Cynder looked at Wagner. He realized what she meant. The drop off the balcony was huge and there is no other way down.

"That's a good question." Wagner replied. He felt both his arms being lifted into the air and looked up to see Spyro and Cynder carrying him off to the crashed Nighthawk.

During the flight to the crash site, Cynder stole a glance at Spyro. His horns were so perfect. His purple scales were enchanting to her eyes. She noticed his head began to turn and she quickly snapped to a forward glance.

Spyro saw her head move a bit and looked at her. Her green eyes were so perfect and her face was just so beautiful. He couldn't help but stare. He almost didn't realize that they had landed at their destination.

Wagner disappeared into the cavernous troop bay and emerged holding several M74Ds.

"What are those anyways? Are they similar to that one you had earlier?" Spyro asked looking at the rifles.

"Yes they are. These are M74D standard assault rifles. They fire .22 cal rounds full auto or Simi-auto." Spyro looked at him like he had no idea what he was talking about. Wagner unloaded a rifle and showed him the bullet.

"There is an explosive charge in the back. A little hammer inside hits it. The small explosion sends the metal tip out of the barrel."

"So that's what the-"

"Flash is from? Yes." The Lieutenant finished for him. Spyro nodded.

He loaded the rifle and then proceeded to handing the rifles to Cynder which she hesitantly accepted.

"Uh... Cynder right?" Wagner asked.

"Yea." She replied.

"Could you take these back to the temple and distribute them among the men?"

"Sure." With that she took off to the temple.

"Spyro, could you follow me?" Wagner asked.

"Sure, where are we going?"

"We're going to hook up with the rest of Alpha Company."

_______________________________________

After much walking (flying for Spyro) they reached a large clearing where at least twenty marines had engaged twelve Lakadors. The marines were at the bottom of a large ravine in the clearing. They little or no cover. The Lakadors were at a superior position and were firing down into the ravine at the exposed marines. If didn't get help they would probably all be killed. Wagner motioned Spyro over.

"Spyro lets move behind them and surprise them."

"What are those things?" Spyro almost yelled but Wagner quickly gave him a sign to lower his voice.

"They're called Lakadors. They are the reason we are here. Look, I'll explain everything later. Right now we have to help those marines." With that both Wagner and Spyro positioned themselves on the Lakadors' vulnerable flank. Wagner lifted his rifle and pulled the trigger,

The loud TAT, TAT, TAT of the M74D made Spyro jump a bit, but he helped by torching the Lakadors not already caught in Wagner's assault rifle fire. Soon all twelve Lakadors lay dead.

Wagner instantly recognized the leader of the marine squad.

"Sgt. Malarkey! Get over here." The young sergeant ran over to the lieutenant.

"Sir!" He snapped to a quick salute which Wagner quickly returned. "Sir we thought you were dead and-"It was then that the sergeant saw Spyro and raised his rifle to engage him. The Lieutenant quickly pushed the rifle barrel to the ground.

"Hold your fire. He's not one of them." The sergeant looked at him funny.

"Have you'll secured a landing zone for the destroyer?"

"Yes sir, you're standing in it." Wagner then noticed that the clearing was big enough for the destroyer to deploy. A Nighthawk cleared the mushroom line and landed in front of Lt. Wagner and Sgt. Malarkey.

Coronal Dyke stepped off and, seeing Spyro next to Lt. Wagner without them killing each other, looked Wagner dead in the eyes.

"Lieutenant you'd better have a damn good explanation for all of this." He motion to Spyro.

End of Chapter 3

Well Wagner has made contact with dragons, and has linked up with A company. Now things get interesting. I hope you enjoyed this cause there's a helluva lot more to come. Hopefully I can type fast enough and get the next chapter put up by late Friday or early Saturday.
