#7 of Rising Downfall

The sixth chapter of the story. Guil is on his own again. What will happen when he meets a pack of wolves?

It didn't take me long to fall asleep in the train. I don't know how I did it when the steel floors and with all of the cargo that was in the car; it was uncomfortable for me but I managed. I remember leaning against the open door of the car as I was resting by a stack of hay when I suddenly fell out of the car and rolled down a hill and almost into a river. I quickly got to my feet and looked around and saw a forest in front of me. I had no choice. It was getting late and I need to find shelter. I walked slowly into the forest, disregarding the loud crickets and the owls hooting.

I walked around trying to find a cave or something so I could sleep in. I heard some whimpering not far from where I was and tried to find the source of it. I did. It was a yellow wolf trapped in, well, a bear trap. Its hind leg was caught in it and its blood could attract any other wild animal nearby. Although I had a bad experience with a four legged canine but I couldn't turn down an animal in need. I walked over slowly and examined the trap and its hind leg. It growled at me for a quick second, but saw that I meant no harm and so it stopped; it kept its eye on me though. I took hold of the trap and started to pull it apart; releasing the grip it had on its leg. Sadly, I didn't have anything to bandage its leg up with, but it just wobbled off when it was free. It felt good helping someone, or something, in need.

I continued walking through the forest when I felt a sharp pain in my neck. I slapped my neck and looked at my palm and saw that I had swatted some sort of wasp. The stinger that it had was quite unusual. I then started to feel dizzy as my vision was fading once again and I fell over. Was it poison? I didn't feel sick. I felt paralyzed. I lost consciousness.

I felt something warm and furry brush against my arm and cheek as I slowly opened my eyes and sat up slowly. I heard a soft bark as I looked over and I saw two canine beasts bunched up, conversing with each other. I tilted my head and I cleared my throat a bit loudly to get their attention. They turned to me and I realized that they were wolves. One was a white wolf with green eyes. The other was a black wolf with yellow eyes and was slightly bigger than the white wolf.

They said something in another language and it was nothing I have heard before. Realizing this, the black wolf slides something over to me. I looked at it and it looked like a seed, small enough to eat in one bite. I took a sniff and it didn't smell bad, so I gulped it down. Unfortunately, it was very...bitter. I heard the two wolves giggle at me.

"It's always funny seeing peoples' reactions," I heard one of them say. What the hell did I just eat?

"Y-You can talk?" I asked them. They could speak the English language? I thought only anthropomorphic wolves could speak the English language.

"Not necessarily," the white wolf said.

"What do you mean?"

The black wolf took a step toward me. "We fed you a Wolf Seed, giving you the ability to speak our language. You can speak with any feral animals in this forest or all around the world."

I was beginning to understand what just happened. "But why would you help an outsider, a human, like me?"

"You helped one of our own, who was injured. It was the least we could do."

I nodded slowly, understanding the gesture.

"And, is this yours, little one?" the white wolf asked as it noses my backpack.

"Y-Yes it is..."

"I know it's impolite to go through others belongings but I was curious as to what was inside. I saw a lot of weaponry...and...pictures of our kind." I could tell it was feeling a bit uneasy because that did sound like a suspicious combination.

"I assure you, I am not a wolf hunter. Especially one at my age. I have grown to love and admire wolves. Seeing two wolves right before my very eyes and being able to communicate with them is a bit of a dream come true to me. It's pretty much an honor to meet you all." I didn't tell them that I did kill one due to it being savage and I was only acting in self-defense. They both smiled at me.

"Such kind, sweet, and noble words from a pup," the black wolf grinned.

"I wish there were more humans that were like you," the white wolf said. "Unfortunately, it is almost hunting season and the hunters will soon be here."

"Hunters?" That word disgusted me for some reason. I rose to my feet. "Do not fret. I will do whatever I can to keep you all from harm."

They both looked at me and their tails started to sway. I was glad that they were beginning to trust me.

"We would be in your debt," the white wolf said, smiling brightly at me. "By the way, what are you called, little one?"

"Uh, Guil."

"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Guil. I am Kira." She lowers her front half in front of me. What is she doing?

"And I am Fenris," the black wolf said as he also lowers his front half to the ground. Are they bowing? I held back a giggle from the polite gesture.

"Please. Fenris. Kira. No need to bow. I am not of any royalty," I said to them.

"If you say so. Are you feeling any better?"

I nod. "Yes I do, but what exactly happened to me?"

"You were stung by a HypnoBee. These insects live in the forest and, if they feel that their home is threatened by an intruder, they will sting and latch onto their prey You were lucky that you caught it instantly. They are poisonous. The fact that you killed one immediately sent you into a paralysis state, loss of consciousness, etc. Any longer would've killed you within 5 minutes."

"The nurse wolves here treated you with a herb that counters the paralysis," Kira resumed where Fenris left off. "If it wasn't for Kimba, we wouldn't have found you."

"Who's Kimba?" I asked.

"The yellow wolf you saved."

"Ah, he was returning the favor."

"Maybe not just that. Who knows?"

"Well, would it be okay to look around?"

"By all means. We'd be insulted if you didn't."

I smiled and started to walk out of the den. I saw that it was like a mini-village. Dens to the left. Dens to the right. Wolves of all kind walking along and working and playing and such. I was amazed at the civilization here.

A wolf pup that was a bit smaller than I was ran up to me and started sniffing at me. I looked down at him as the curious little guy looked at me, his blue eyes looking into mine.

"You're a funny looking wolf, minster," he said giggling playfully.

"Uh, I guess I am, little guy," I chuckled. He ran around me, giggling and laughing. He seems to be having a good time. I looked over and I spot a brown she-wolf barking at him. The little pup stopped and looked over at her, and then at me. "I think your mommy wants you."

"Aww man, she probably wants me to help her clean the den. I hate cleaning the den." He grumbles to himself as he looks up at me again. "See ya, mister!" He runs off to the she-wolf and they go into their den. I smiled and then I sighed, thinking about my own mother. I hope she was watching me from up there.

I continued my stroll around the "village", watching the wolves play and work in their dens. I had walked past a group of wolves who were giving a weird look but I ignored it and kept walking. A few seconds later, I soon heard some fast running as I turned around and that wolf who was giving me the weird look tackled me to the ground and growled at me.

"I don't know what you are," he snarled at me, "but I know that you do not belong here, so I'm giving you until sunset to get out of here, or you'll be answering to me!" I didn't show any sign of intimidation as I held my dagger up to his belly and he gasped.

"I do not care what you say or do. I am ready to die. I pretty much have nothing to live for. I am not afraid of death. The question is, are you?"

He glared at me and continued to growl.

"Barkley, get off of him!" said a voice approaching us. It was another wolf with a bandage wrapped around its hind leg.

"I will do no such thing! I refuse to budge until this freak is out of our hair!"

"He saved my life! And I heard that he has agreed to help us fend off the hunters next week! Now, stop this ignorance immediately!"

Barkley growled even more and got off of me, walking away grumbling to himself in a language that I have never heard before. I sat up as the wolf approached me.

"Please don't mind him. He has a tendency to...act violently on something he doesn't understand."

"Meh, water under the bridge, I suppose. You are Kimba, I assume?"

Kimba nodded. "Yes I am. The wolf you saved from before. I am in your debt, good sir." He, too, lowered his front as if he was bowing. I scratched behind my head in embarrassment. I didn't really deserve all this kind behavior.

"I should be thanking you. You found me out in the wilderness, brought me back here, got rid of the poison coursing in my veins and to top it all off, fed me a seed so I could understand you."

Kimba smiles as he licks his yellow fur. "Consider that as a symbol of our friendship."

I smiled as well. "Yes, it shall be so."

"I am also quite amazed. As someone as almost as small as the wolf pups running around here, you showed no fear, no hesitation against Barkley. You stood up to him. Where'd you get such courage?"

"...my father has trained me since I was born..."

"Since you were born? That's too young and yet you're on your own like this? Promoting independence, are they?"

I shook my head. "No, they're deceased."

He blinked and lowered his ears. "Oh dear. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked."

"No, it is alright. And now, I'm trying to find my way home, but I will not turn down a pack in need. Besides, I love wolves." He looked at me and I could tell he was trying to contain his excitement from the compliment.

"Then let me have the honor of giving you a grand tour of our pack." He couldn't help it as his tail started wagging like crazy.

"I would appreciate that. The more I learn about your culture, the better I will be at assisting you all."

He nods and comes closer, lowering himself to the ground. "Then climb aboard and I will show you around."

I chuckled. "I can walk."

"I insist. Plus it takes a day, the whole 24 hours, for the poison to be fully disposed of, so you shouldn't really move around much."

He had me there.

"Point taken. Very well then." I came over and climbed on his back. I have never rode on a wolf's back before. It was much different from a dragon's. Smaller... Fluffier... Not as warm, but it'll do. Let the tour begin.

Kimba trotted around the village, singing a very unfamiliar song. It was new to me. It seemed like he was happy to have a hybrid kid riding on his back. He introduced me to many of the wolves here and what their roles were in the village. First of all, there were guarddogs of this small little village.TroyandRoywere twins as they made sure that no strange creatures made their way in to cause any harm to their home. He's going in no particular order due to there being ranks and such. There were also the Grand Elders of the pack. They were wise wolves who know the history of their world and they know the territory like the back of their paw. They either entertain the kids with fascinating knowledge or they would put them to sleep. Due to their old age, they sometimes forget their names, so the wolves here would just call them either Elder or sir.

Even though they were one of the low ranked wolves, Kimba led me over to the Omegas' den. They don't get a lot of the privileges as the rest of the pack. I feel sorry for them. The worse was the gnaw wolves that were even lower than the Omegas. They get treated so horribly and forced to go last when hunting. Sleep at a certain distance away from the pack. Oh man...

Last but not least, he was even allowed to see the Alpha male and the Alpha female; the leaders of the pack. Melinda and Ahmed have been running the pack for 3 ½ years with a pup of their own that doesn't get out and is much quieter than the other wolf pups around here. They had named him Shang. From the looks of it, Melinda may have another pup on the way. Shang is really different. He is not as loud as the rest, and he has a different way of showing loyalty. When I first saw him, he could already open his eyes and could already speak (just like I could). When he first saw me, he approached me slowly and just sat down in front of me, looking up at me with his yellow eyes. His tail was swaying as it was brushing against the ground and I could've sworn he smiled at me.

"Our son seems to be taking a liking to you, Guil," Ahmed had said, smiling at his son.

"As do everyone else here," I replied but then I remember what happened earlier and looked out of the den and I seen Barkley walking by. "Well, almost everyone."

"Do not worry," I heard Melinda say. "He's like that sometimes."

"If you are certain, ma'am."

She giggled at my chivalry. "You're quite the intelligent young human."

"I'm actually a hybrid."

They both blinked at what I just said.

"A hybrid?" Ahmed asked. "Of what other creature, may I ask?"

"A dragon," I said calmly to them, hoping not to scare them. They didn't seem intimidated by what I just said, but they did look at each other as if they were confused.

"How does that work?" Melinda asks me. I blinked and I just shrugged and shook my head, not really wanting to answer the question.

"No idea... And I honestly do not want to know."

"Well, this is the first time we had a hybrid in our home. Especially one that takes the form of a human. We don't socialize with humans because...well, you know, hunting season."

"Don't worry. I'll do whatever I can to help protect this village from the hunters."

"But...why help us? You will be betraying your own kind."

"My own kind invaded my home, killed my parents and kidnapped me, separating me from my home. Plus, I want to get stronger than I am already." A smile appears on my face. "And I do wish to fight alongside wolves."

Ahmed chuckles and his tail wags a bit.

"Then we will take you to the training grounds of our village."

I blinked for a second.

"You two are gonna train me?" I asked them.

"Of course. We're already training our little son here. He's next in line for being the next Alpha after my passing. I may be an old wolf, but that doesn't mean I can't whoop some tail or two."

I giggled at that. "I won't judge you on that."

"The question is: Do you think you have what it takes to train with us?" Melinda asked me.

I cocked an eyebrow. "I don't think I have what it takes: I KNOW I have what it takes."

"That's the spirit, my boy," Ahmed said. "This way." He trots out of the den with Melinda following behind and Shang walking besides them. I followed behind them through the village wondering what type of training we would be doing. The training grounds weren't that far from the village. Maybe 2 or 3 minutes away. It was a wide area where there was a big circular patch was in the middle of the field. I guess these grounds were used more than once.

I stood on one side of the field where Ahmed stood on the other. Melinda and Shang sat on the sidelines to watch.

"Now then, young Guil," he said to me. "Let me see how well you fight. Show me what you can do!" He lowers his front to the ground, his back end raised as he was in a battle position.

I nodded.

"Yes sir," I said to him as we charged at each other simultaneously. For an old wolf, he is quite strong. And fast, too. Much faster than I was. He caught me off guard a couple of times and threw a few good swipes in at my face and arm, but I got a few good punches and kicks in to his muzzle and tummy. His senses and sense of smell were as good as mine. Even his eyesight was good for someone who only sees in black and white. What impressed me about him was he was capable of doing somersaults in mid-air, backflips and front flips. He knew what he was doing.

We sparred for about a half hour then the fight came to a conclusion as we both sat there panting.

"You are a gifted fighter, Guil," Ahmed said between pants. "We definitely need someone like you on our side..."

"Th...Thank you..." I replied out of breath.

He smiled at me. "We will teach you all we know."

"I'm deeply grateful, sir."

He chuckled. "Call me Ahmed."
