Part one of a series I am starting on with my new furry superhero characters. This one kind of introduces my main heroine, Cobalt as she works her way through a night in Anejo City. I was gonna put it all in one instead of breaking it up, but then I got tired.

The sun had set hours ago; bathing the city in darkness, save for the artificial glow from the many streetlights that dotted the urban landscape. A majority of Anejo's residents had gone to sleep hours ago, but there were a few who used the darkness to their advantage, who used it to prey upon the innocent for personal gain. The others still up at this hour were the ones who tirelessly worked to protect the innocent. One such individual sat perched upon the 5th floor ledge of an apartment building, large canine ears swiveling this way and that, listening intently for the sounds of criminal activity. Her name was Cobalt- at least in this guise, and she was one of several "registered paranormals" that existed; they were individuals who had, for one reason or another been blessed (or cursed) with special abilities. Registering with the government gave Cobalt and others like her certain limited arrest powers within the city, assisting the police in the apprehension of criminals. The rules were stringent and applied to the supers just as they did "normal" police officers in regards to the levels of force they were allowed to use against suspects.

Cobalt yawned slightly and drummed her fingertips against the brick of the building. She was about to consider turning in for the evening when something caught her eye.

The young vixen walked hurriedly down the street, keeping her paws stuffed into the pockets of her hoodie, pulling it snugly around her. She didn't like being alone this late at night, but her boss where she tended bar wouldn't give her any day hours. With her car in the shop and the MTA ceasing bus service an hour before she got off, it left the vixen with little choice. At least she had a canister of pepper spray on her keychain. Her black ears flipped back on her head as she caught the sound of footsteps behind her.

Cobalt crouched on one knee, her blue eyes studying the two males who rounded the corner behind the vixen. She didn't like the way they were speaking in hushed whispers gesturing at her, but at this point they weren't really doing anything wrong. For all Cobalt knew they were just your typical drunk and horny males, ogling the pretty fox-girl in front of them. She continued to observe from her undetected perch, slinking along the rooftops to parallel them. The males- she could see them clearer now- were dressed in jeans and dark sweatshirts, each wearing a troubling smirk on their muzzles. One was a chocolate colored pit-bull, the other a black and tan shepherd. Both of them were in peak physical condition, and other under circumstances may have been attractive. They were closing on the vixen a bit faster now, their intentions becoming increasingly clearer as the shepherd reached into his waistband and retrieved a semi-automatic handgun, keeping the weapon hidden against his thigh as him and his partner addressed the fox.

"Hey there, pretty lady." The pit-bull said, walking briskly to bring himself astride the vixen.

"Umm.. Hi." She replied back, managing a nervous smile, her paws fingering the OC spray on her key ring.

"What would a sweet little thing like you be doing in such a nasty neighborhood like this?"

"I... I'm on my way home. I live just up the block."

The pit gently placed a paw on her upper arm, squeezing it lightly. "Nah, no you don't. I know everyone who stays around here."

"What are you... Let me go!" She shrieked

"You see girl, this is private property. You gotta pay the toll if you want to go through." The shepherd said with a chuckle. "Else you never know what sort of nasty things could happen to a pretty little thing like you."

The dogs now stood on either side of the vixen, their muzzles inches away from her head as they taunted her.

"I'm sorry guys... I don't have any money. I'm a waitress and I didn't make anything in tips tonight"

"Oh that's ok girl." The pit growled "I'm sure we can think of some other way for you to pay us, right Jake?" The vixen let out a startled whimper as she felt a strong paw grip her butt. With all her strength, she elbowed the brown dog in his stomach and broke free of his grasp, quickly pulling her pepper spray from her pocket and pointing it at the dog. It sent a chill down her spine when all he did was smile at her.

"Oh lookit that Jake, looks like the bitch brought pepper spray to a gunfight."

"That it does, Caesar." The shepherd replied, leveling the weapon at the vixen. "Now you be a good girl and drop it. Maybe you'll live through this."

The vixen whimpered and dropped her keys on the pavement, then raised her trembling paws in a gesture of surrender.

Cobalt had seen enough, with the grace of an Olympic gymnast, she leapt from the rooftop, swinging on the bars of the fire escape until she came to land right in front of the trio.

"What... the... who the hell?" The pit-bull said with a shocked expression. This newcomer was dressed in an outfit he'd never seen before. The blue and black material seemed to hug every inch of the female's body, a black utility belt was slung across her hips, where both paws now rested.

"Oh how rude of me not to introduce myself. Name's Cobalt. You've probably seen me on the news"

Indeed he had. Everyone in the city knew about The Cobalt Coyote. She had an impressive number of captures and arrests to her record.

"Now boys" She said antagonistically. "I'm surprised two big strapping men like yourselves felt like they needed to pick on a female half each of their sizes. That's a little low, even for you two. I'll tell you what. You both run away right now, and maybe I won't wipe the pavement with you before I hand you to the cops."

With a growl, the brown pit lunged at the heroine with all intent of tackling her. Course there was no way he could of known that Cobalt's alter ego was well versed in several defensive fighting styles, because without effort, the coyote sidestepped his attack and grabbed his arm, using his momentum to send him crashing into a light pole. Jake the shepherd, who watched this unfold, moved to bring his pistol to bear onto Cobalt's head, but he found his arms were... stiff. Grunting and snarling, he tried with all his might to move his arm, his panicked gaze meeting the smirking muzzle of the coyote.

"What's the matter sweetie, can't get it up? Don't worry I hear it's a common problem." The shepherd turned several shades of crimson beneath his fur as he struggled to move his locked muscles.

"Drop it." Cobalt commanded

"I...I can't!"

"Oh I think you'll find that you can. Try it."

With a pained and shocked expression, the shepherd released his grip on the pistol and the weapon clattered to the street.

"How did you? You can control me?"

The coyote nodded in reply, grabbing the dog's wrists and firmly cuffing his paws. "Yeah you could say that. Though it's not so much you as it is the water in your body. Now you be a good boy and sit here while I go collect your friend."

The blushing and defeated shepherd nodded and plopped onto the ground, watching as the superhero confidently strode up to his partner in crime, who wasn't ready to give up just yet, because he again lunged at her, his fist just brushing the coyote's muzzle, she recoiled to the side and shook it off, then executed a perfect spin kick right to the pit bull's throat.

"Bad dog!" Cobalt barked as her boot heel connected with the dog's neck, sending the big male to his knees, gasping and sputtering for air. She immediately followed with a punch to his gut that put him on his back. "You see, if you had just run when I told you, you could have avoided getting your ass kicked by a girl." Cobalt pulled out a small communicator from one of the pouches on her utility belt and pressed it. The small device beeped and instantly connected her with a police dispatcher. Normally she would have stuck around for the paddy wagon, but the high pitched wail of a siren grabbed her attention, and her view shifted to one of the city's fire engines racing down the street, followed by a ladder truck and the chief's car.

"Ok NOW we're talking." Cobalt said with a grin.
