Great White Basketballer takes on the Great White Way

Recent NYU Grad and NCAA Basketball Champ, Nina Lime will be starting a three week stint as Elphaba in Wicked. She's no stranger to the New York stage scene, but this is her first starring role, and it comes as a huge surprise as she had recently declared for the FBA Draft.

When Playbill caught up to her during a rehearsal this weekend, she addressed this saying, "My focus is purely the FBA, and I understand that many teams may look down on me for this, but this is Wicked, I've dreamt of playing this role since I was a little girl!"

When asked about dying her snow white fur for the role, she folded her ears and replied, "It's the role of a lifetime, and it's now or never, besides, maybe the green might look good with a Plymouth uniform."

Rumor is she was offered a six month stint with the role, but she turned it down due to her commitment with the basketball league. When asked about this with a few sports reporters, they universally thought it was a bad idea, and several said the young wolf needs to hire an agent to prevent these kind of mistakes.

Further inquiries with the staff at the Gershwin theatre confirmed she does not have an agent for acting either, and she's been chided by other actors for lack of representation.

Hearing Ms. Lime's take on "Defying Gravity" redefines the term showstopper, and truly must be witnessed in the short time she is available. Wicked is playing at the Gershwin Theatre at 221 W 51st Street, show times 7pm nightly.

FBA Transactions - Friday September 16th updated daily by T.Matt Latrans

The Winnipeg Voyageurs have agreed to trade their 2011 #1 overall draft pick and Harry Redford (Hare, C) to the Huntsville Mayors for their 2011 #2 overall draft pick, Jorge Gonzalez (Jaguar, C) and a sign-and-trade of Wagner Vaughters (Coyote, G). As part of the deal, Vaughters will receive a 3-year / $6 million contract.

Harry Redford (Hare, C) didn't even get his feet wet before moving again. Just hours after the previous trade was announced, the Huntsville Mayors traded Redford and $2.5 million in 2011 cap space to the Biloxi Mudpuppies for Wilma Sanchez (Otter, G) and Wilson Kent (Bull, F/C). Kent received a 2-year / $3.5 million contract in the exchange.

FBA Pre-Season Recaps

Tuesday November 1st: SAS 104 , HNT 88 With the five returning players on the Mayors starting against the updated lineup of the Spectrums, the visitors built upon an early lead before the new acquisitions on the Huntsville bench slowed the bleeding to prevent the deficit from reaching 20 points.

Thursday November 3rd: HNT 93, WIL 96 Even a dazzling performance by the Mayors to close out the first half and a rally after halftime to tie up the game with the hosting Minutemen storming back in the second half, a buzzer-beater by Teo Masalia (Black Panther, SG, WIL) gave Williamsburg their first victory of the pre-season while Huntsville remains winless.

Friday November 4th: HNT 86, BAL 101 A tired Mayors club from a heartbreaking loss last night in Williamsburg couldn't maintain their lead after halftime against a better-rested Baltimore roster.

Sunday November 6th: HNT 106, NWK 108 The rookie-led lineup of the visiting Mayors kept nipping at the heels of the hosting Pride, taking a brief lead in the final quarter before falling short by a bucket to remain winless in the pre-season.

Monday November 7th: HNT 84, PLY 97 Plymouth's well-oiled offensive machine took it easy in their only pre-season match against an exhausted Hunstville team, leading to a double-digit win at home.

Tuesday November 8th

The crisp autumn weather of upstate New York was defintely not the feline's favorite, having chosen to stay mostly inside his suite at the Omni Hotel over the past week to conduct preliminary interviews with some potential candidates for Huntsville's permanent GM position, as well as entertain guests and other business associates. His extremely brief meeting with Donahue Frump (Mole, owner, ALB) at the beginning of the week was more of a photo op for the paparazzi, but the cat intentionally had little to discuss with his fellow FBA team owner, preferring instead to deal with the rather enigmatic Darius E. Mal'nioto (Wolf, GM, ALB). The lupine had keen business sense, even implying that he had sniffed out just what the cat really had in store for the Mayors, and only offering a helping paw should assistance be required. Of course the tabby expressed his gratitude for the gesture, but focused for the rest of the meeting on the task of finalizing the four-game Gentlemen's Club promotion between the Mayors and the Alphas.

Stefan Calico (Tabby Cat, Owner/GM, HNT) had left explicit instructions as to what lineups to use against each of the teams that he scheduled for the Mayors' pre-season week. The grueling back-to-back road games along the East Coast were his best chance to push the players to their limits before the regular season began, hopefully without anyone breaking when they would arrive later today, just as he'd be leaving for the Gulf Coast. Except he was waiting specifically for...

*knock-knock-knock* "Stefan?"

"Right on time, Howard," replied the cat from inside the suite. "Gimme a sec!"

Upon opening the door, a tall black cat stood behind a tired-looking canine who shuffled just inside the hotel room foyer. Giving a nod to the other feline, the tabby shut the door and turned to the arrival. "Any problems on the road?"

Howard Schnitthund (German Shepherd, head coach, HNT) snorted. "You wouldn't believe it if I told you."

"Well it can't be any worse than going winless all week," said Stefan over his shoulder. "Need a drink to help you relax?"

The dog shook his head. "I just want to give you my report and head to bed so that tomorrow we can get some practice in before the real problems begin."

A chuckle preceded the cat as he returned to the foyer with his black jacket on and purple hat covering his head. "Then we'll walk to your room together," offered the feline as he opened the entry door once again and stepped out with his team's head coach. The tall black cat was still outside, and turned to see who was leaving the suite. "Leo, could you grab my bags while I get our friend here to his room?"

While Leo was inside the suite, Calico and Schnitthund were walking down the hall. "So did Telki [Holland (Chinchilla, SG)] do what I predicted she would?"

The canine nodded. "Nina Lime (Wolf, PG) was a wreck after the loss at home while she was on the bench beside [John] Stoat (Stoat, SG) who pretty much chewed her ears off. Figuratively, of course. She did okay against the Minutemen after Holland calmed her down, but fatigue was a little evident in Baltimore. And despite rallying the team against Newark and falling short, I don't believe anyone on the team respects her playcalling, and she's starting to see that."

"Doing the theatrical play may have put a sour taste in most of the players' muzzles," remarked the temporary GM. "I'm sure that if we had taken Zoie [Wilds (African Hunting Dog, G/F)] instead of Nina, there wouldn't be any question as to her dedication. But Holland was--"

"I was getting to that," interrupted Coach Schnitthund. "After Plymouth, Philip [Ringer (Rat, assistant coach)] told me that Telki actually took Nina aside and had a chat with her. I think those two might be bonding pretty well."

The tabby paused in the hallway. "Interesting. I figured she'd try to hook up with [Evan] Ashton (Lion, SF) first, but if Telki can find something common with Nina, that'll strengthen our bench backcourt. Next time I see Bailey [Brisbane (Catahoula Leopard Hound, PG)] I'll call him off training for the rookie."

"You might want to hold off on that," barked the shep. "The hound and the wolf actually worked pretty well when she's at the two-guard."

Stefan shrugged and continued with Howard towards his room. "All right, I'll trust ya with that. But make sure that Ashton is starting against the Alphas; he knows [Carl] Esteban's (Jaguar, SF) moves the best out of all of them."

"Even if Esteban isn't back in the lineup?" asked the coach.

"Well, Mr. Mal'nioto assured everyone that he'd be back from the house arrest in Puerto Rico," replied the cat just as they reached the other suite that the Huntsville coaching staff were staying in. "But even so, Evan deserves a bit of closure against the team that didn't use him properly."

"You're the boss," answered Schnitthund, adding a mock salute. "Too bad you won't be around to see how it turns out."

"[Philip] Ringer (Rat, asst. coach, HNT) should've gotten all the notes I took during the pre-season game here against Spokane. The desk clerks should've had them delivered when you got checked in," noted the cat. "Besides, I've got an invitation to the bayou for free scouting of our next competition."

"Heh, are you sure you're the owner, and not just a scout?" joked the dog.

The tabby flashed a toothy grin.
