#20 of Fallen Sky Tales

A period of ten years has passed, yet not much has changed. Fallen Sky has a better grip on things, but fools are plentiful...

Ten years have passed, yet not much had changed. Those who are childish are still childish, and the ignorant still complain the loudest. Under Isa's command, Fallen Sky commanders who pledged loyalty to the new rule were allowed to keep their ships, but any new captains of ships were to be female. This wasn't lost on Dante, who happened to take on a student willing to learn how to be a ship captain.

"We're getting close to the landing point. Jill and I will scout ahead immediately after landing and place the traps, The rest of you should set up a reflector barricade and set aside spare ammunition. Titus, first assist Sere in setting up two gattling posts. Miss Star and Sere can occupy those as they lack specialization in long range weaponry. There is another ship assisting us, but I wasn't given the intel."

"Take a breath Wendy, you're doing fine." Dante stood up, "Some hotshot captain who thinks she knows best. The way I see it, she's cannon fodder. If any of her crew get in the way, cut them down. I won't give them mercy for interfering with my people and risking our lives."

Sere jumped up and down with a large case in her hand, "I've finally perfected it! My masterpiece!"

Jill giggled, "I thought your masterpiece was that handgun you modified."

The proud dragon shook her head, "Nope! I even renamed this!" She set the case down on the bar and slowly opened it, "I call it the Reaper!" It was a heavy looking gun, crafted in a rare starmetal with actual vents along the length of the stock and barrel. There was no slot for a magazine, "It's a single load, I even had to make the ammunition cells. This baby is gonna be one of a kind 'til the end of time!"

"Damn!" Even Ratchet was completely impressed, "What's the range on that thing?"

Sere's smile was as big as physically possible, "Range? It goes until you want it to stop! Each round has an energy to it, and it shoots a constant penetrating beam. Let go of the trigger and it stops, when it's empty it simply discharges the cell. If you wanted, you could cut through a heavy assault hovership with reinforced walls and shields. Also," She set a pad with straps next to it, "I've modified my reflector armor for this, you have to wear it or the recoil will take off an arm. Simply enough, right?"

Wendy nodded, "Well, I think there's only one man that could handle that monster." Every member of Zero Unit agreed, "So Dante, let's see how it fits."

He sighed loudly, "I swear, the things I do for you people. Wendy, Sere, if I get injured you two are going to have to get me back in shape. That means food service and free drinks." He attached the safety pad and lifted up the gun, "Not as heavy as I thought, but not exactly lightweight." He examined every part of the Reaper.

Sere removed a pouch from her belt, "Here, ten rounds, it's all I could make with what I had. Angel got upset when I used some of the ship's equipment for other purposes." She looked away and blushed.

Angel chimed in, "Indeed. However, I will keep what happened between us."

Chey was the first to speak, "I wonder what you got for your privacy."

"I would not be so rash Chey. You may recall that I have access to everything in the ship. It would be a shame if your door could no longer close."

"Hey!"

Miss Star hopped up and down, "I missed this! Glad my little tour is over!" The Albatross landed, "Yay! I missed the violence most of all!"

The door opened and Zero Unit followed Wendy's plan exactly. Within five minutes everyone was back to the barricades, "Good time. They're still up ahead. Maybe about 500 strong from what we could tell."

The other Fallen Sky ship landed, and the captain was the last off the ship. They seemed a little nervous that the older custom ship with the unique crew was already there. More specifically, they weren't wearing the traditional Fallen Sky armor. They wore a looser black clothing made of a synthetic material meant to prevent cuts and scrapes. The tall dragons wore a sleeveless shirt and long pants while the human covered as much as possible. The females varied a lot more. The vixen wore a short dress and boots (yet nothing underneath the dress), the feline and squirrel opted for sleeveless shirts and longer shorts with many pockets. The wolf wore a tight bodysuit, the smaller dragon wore a t-shirt and baggy shorts, but was covered in pockets. The human female wore a sleeveless shirt and a short yet tight skirt. Each of them had a rough red "0" on their back with a stripe through it, just like on the male human's eyepatch. The female human also had that same logo tattooed on her shoulder

"Hey! Who's in charge?" The female captain spoke loudly, yet Dante could hear the slight quiver in her voice. He pointed to Wendy and took his position, "Odd uniforms. I thought there was gonna be a bigger ship helping, this is just a slaughter. Call your people back, we can't win this."

Wendy rested her carbine on her shoulder, "What? A pissant like you thinks we're gonna lose? Why don't you just go away, let the actual Fallen Sky handle this."

The captain grabbed Wendy by the arm, and then saw the sky above her. The rest of Zero Unit had their weapons turned onto the captain's crew before she hit the ground, "H-hey! That's illegal!"

"You're interfering. Get lost before I put you down." Wendy kicked her while she was still on the ground. The captain crawled away.

"You'll... I'll report this! I hope you all die!" In a minute, their ship took off.

Dante rolled his head on his shoulders, "Good, though I would have broken at least one of her bones. Ratchet, what do you see?"

She looked through her scope, "In range, but I'd scare them off. Did you two plant our special trap?"

Jill nodded, "Yep, right where it would cause the most damage. Let us know when the last person gets past the marker."

"Got it."

The situation wasn't tense, they trusted Wendy. She did learn from the best after all. Ratchet gave the word and Wendy hit the switch. There were cries of confusion, and some of pain as the smaller explosives detonated along the forest walls, forcing them to move into range or die, "Alright! Show no mercy!"

Immediately Ratchet started picked off the ones in the back, forcing the army to rush forward faster. Jill, Chey, and Wendy fired their rifles while Sere and Miss Star opened up the gattling guns. Titus took care of the ones that made it past the hailstorm of bullets, but soon it was Dante's turn at the plate.

He stepped forward when Zero Unit had to reload, braced himself, and pulled the trigger on the Reaper, A massive beam of white light burst forward, and while he held his ground the force shoved him back two feet along the dirt. Still standing, he swept the beam across the army. Any who weren't cut in half simply had a chunk taken from their body, "Not bad. Takes out the challenge though." Soon the cell ran dry and it auto-ejected.

The army was now no more than 20 strong. They tried to surrender and threw away their weapons, "Well Wendy? You're in charge."

"We were paid to eliminate them. That's what we're gonna do." She fired on the panicking men, "Easy. Shall we leave?"

..................................................

Just as expected, the battle was simple and Sere's Reaper really cut them down just as she said. The Albatross had just arrived at it's new private dock on the Fallen Sky home world, which had since become heavily developed. Isa's people from her colony had helped make it a place they could call their own. Most of the colony was scrapped, but they really made it work. Plants and trees were planted to make the planet look better, and not just a mercenary hub.

Dante and Wendy headed towards the main meeting room to discuss the punishment for the interfering captain, and luckily they didn't have to search hard. The guards at the meeting room opened the doors and she was there, along with the active heads of Fallen Sky: Isa, Marie, Mira, Rachel, the Goddess, and now Dante, "What's the deal here? She put my people in danger Isa!"

"I know, I know, just calm down. We're here to discuss the punishment."

Mira was as calm as ever, but walked over to hug Dante, "Good to see you in one piece." She had to walk with a cane, but liked to show off. Rachel signed up as a leader of Fallen Sky to help with Mira's treatment, and she also knew how to appeal to people with kindness. Much better than hyper women or a devious negotiator sometimes.

Rachel took a breath, "Yes, though I highly doubt you'd let someone like this put you in harms way. My guess... you would have shot her and her crew first, am I right?"

"Yep. Even worse, this was Wendy's first mission in charge. I have full confidence in her, but if she was anyone else that would have been catastrophic."

Marie nodded and leaned back in her chair, "I second that. I was in a Fallen Sky crew before, one mistake is costly. Pissing off Dante is even more costly." She leaned forward and rested her elbows on the table, "So, what should we do with you?"

Isa was still wearing her new antique pirate hat, straight from an abandoned museum on Earth, "Firing squad is a bit much. How about... you are stripped of your title, and unless you agree to become a janitor for all Fallen Sky facilities, you'll go into exile."

The new janitor nodded in agreement, then left in shame, "There, simple. I'm glad I didn't have to get involved. Last time I did someone lost a heart. Then Fallen Sky was defeated by a one-eyed man if I recall correctly." The Goddess smiled sweetly.

"Uh huh, sure. Well, Wendy is capable as a replacement. However, I prefer her on my crew. I think I'll keep her for a while."

Wendy smiled, "Thank you Dante, I'll do better than my best."

"Are we done here? I have a crew that wants to celebrate and a large shipment of alcohol coming my way."

"Aww, you don't want to stay and cheer us up any?"

Dante shook his head, "Another time. I haven't had enough to drink today as it is."

..........................................

Zero Unit drank and drank and drank, but Dante left before he could drink too much. He decided to take a shower in his quarters since they were docked and had access to nearly unlimited water. The hot water felt nice, but peace and quiet wasn't allowed for him.

"Uh, Dante, are you in there?" Two sets of footsteps, but it was Wendy who spoke.

"Can I help you two?"

There was a silence, then Sere spoke, "Uh, I think we have to care for you now since you got injured."

Dante opened the glass door, "I'm fine, see?" Sere quickly scratched him, "What was that for?"

"See? Injured. I guess we need to take care of you now." They both started to undress, "Move over a bit so we can get in."

Dante's eye twitched, "Why can't I have any nice girls on my crew?"

Sere stepped in first, followed by Wendy, "Don't worry, we'll be gentle." She shut the door behind her.

"Just another day..."

...........................................

Wendy woke up, and saw Sere on the other side of the bed, "Dante?" She sat up in his bed, "Where did you go?" She walked around, but he was nowhere to be found, "Hey, wake up."

Sere rolled off the bed, "Dammit! What's wrong?" She looked around, "Oh..." They both got dressed as fast as possible, then heard a knock on the door, "Yes?"

The door opened and Jill walked in, "Oh, didn't know you two were here. Where's Dante? I can't move around without my wake-up buddy."

"He's not here." The ghostly girl voice still shocked them, "He left to do some business."

Jill was the most relaxed, "Uh, any more details Anima? He wouldn't just leave without you."

"Hmph. I wasn't going there, she deserved to die. He has too much honor."

"You still didn't say where."

Anima sighed, "Back to Earth to bury that bitch, or at least, make a gravestone for her."

Wendy was a little concerned, "You have... some strong language. Can you be more specific?"
