Alicia falls into a dark place when Kurt is hurt in a fight with Paul.

Greetings my followers, I know I haven't been writing in a long time, and the last time I wrote in the series was over two years ago. I apologize, inspiration is only few and far between unfortunately.

I created this as a non-yiff story so that I could further deepen the relationship between Alicia and Kurt. I hope you all like this. I did not know where else to go with the cliff hanger that I left with my last story in this series.

Once again any constructive criticism is very welcome.

Now without further ado. The story.

Paul looked like he had been sleeping in a dumpster, and wreaked of alcohol. Not expecting the door to open and being inebriated he jumped back against the opposite wall when the door open. He then slid down the wall, not being able to catch his balance, and landed on his butt looking at the tall wolf that was in front of him.

Kurt looked down at the heap of filthy fox that was Paul. He quietly suppressed a giggle but didn't quite suppress the grin.

Paul looked up at him and instantly saw red. He slurred, "You little piece of shit runt." He struggled to get himself up to standing but instead just ended up stumbling hard into Kurt, tackling him to the ground in a heap. After that he pushed him self up straddling the larger canine, unintentionally pinning Kurt's legs under him. He then looked down and started swinging at Kurt connecting hard on the first hit.

Kurt fell backward and hit his head hard on the ground stunned for a few critical seconds. The next time he opened his eyes, he felt a hard fist hit his chin and was out cold.

Paul didn't stop. He punched a dozen times, half the time missing Kurt's face, and half again barely connecting, but when he did connect fully it opened up a fresh cut on Kurt's face, and deformed it a bit more.

Alicia heard Kurt hit the floor and ran out half naked to see what had happened. When she saw Paul on top of Kurt swinging at his head she yelled for Paul to stop but it fell on deaf ears. She then tried to grab on to Paul's arm to stop him from swinging, but she got shoved to the side very hard, and Paul just continued swinging at Kurt's head. After regaining some of her senses she ran to her bed room and grabbed the gun she had hidden under her mattress. She ran out again and yelled for Paul to stop which he didn't even give her a glance. She aimed at him and shot him in the upper chest. Paul instantly fell back onto Kurt's legs, and was clutching his chest near his heart. Alicia grabbed Paul by his hand paws and pulled him off Kurt and into the hallway. She then closed the door and ran to the phone sobbing. Dialing 911 she heard a familiar voice on the other line.

Gladys and Alicia met a few days after Kurt saved Alicia's life so that she could thank Gladys personally for helping. Gladys was overjoyed at the present that she got from Alicia, and Alicia threw a small party at her apartment in Gladys' and Kurt's honor to show her appreciation. They became quick friends.

"911 emergency."

"Gladys! Kurt's been hurt!"

"Alicia? What happened and where are you?"

"We're at home, and Paul, my ex, somehow knocked Kurt to the floor and started punching Kurt in the head. I had to shoot Paul to get him off and dragged him into the hallway. I can't tell if Kurt's breathing!"

"Ok, we have a couple of ambulances and the police on the way. You need to make sure Kurt's airway is clear pull his jaws apart and make sure he can breathe."

Alicia pulled Kurt's lower jaw open and made sure his tongue was out of the way. Kurt's lower jaw bent in a place that it shouldn't.

"I'm sure he's breathing, but I think his snout is broken! If nothing else his lower jaw! Oh god Paul why did you do this?"

"Is Paul still there?!?"

"Paul is out in the hall I don't even know if he is still alive. I think I shot him in the chest I wasn't even really aiming."

At that time Alicia heard men yelling in the hall way. "I think someone is here I don't want to open the door. It could be Paul."

"Just stay inside until the police or paramedics get there and don't open the door for anyone else."

She got up and looked through the peep hole, all she could see was a black lump just out of her view. She backed up and went back to Kurt checking again if he was breathing.

"I can't tell who it is, it looks like they are bent down checking on Paul."

A second later she heard a loud knock on the door. "Hello?! We got a report of an emergency in this apartment!"

Alicia jumped up and looked through the peep hole, she knew instantly it wasn't Paul and recognized the police badge on the shirt. She quickly threw open the locks and pulled open the door to a German Shepard police officer. He looked at her and then looked down seeing Kurt laid there on the floor and the gun a few inches from his head. The officer rushed in putting himself between Kurt and Alicia, and the gun and knelt to check on Kurt. Alicia bent down on the other side of Kurt. The minute she did the cop put his hand up and said, "Ma'am step back. Let me work, and don't move, we will have some questions for you."

Alicia stood back up and leaned against the counter with her ear to the phone. "Gladys the police are here. He is checking on Kurt. Thank you again."

"Honey stay right there I will be there in a few minutes. I got someone to cover me until I get back."

The rest of it was a blur to Alicia. Gladys got there just shortly after Kurt was being loaded into one of the ambulances. The police officer started asking her what happened, to which she was still in shock and couldn't answer. Gladys tried to help being the receiver to the call. Gladys explained that she was friends to Kurt and Alicia and tried to explain what had happened. Alicia started bawling. She was taken in to the Police station still half naked. The minute she got there, there was a lab technician there to pull all evidence from her, giving her a bright orange jumpsuit.

After waiting in interrogation for a couple of hours she finally got to see the same German Shepard that was at her door this morning. Alicia looked as though she was lost and didn't even give any notice that she saw the officer enter the room.

"I am Officer Crawford. Ma'am I know you have been through a lot, but we need your side of the story."

Alicia just stared at the table in front of her.

"Ma'am? I don't want to process you but I'm not sure what happened, all I know is that I found you being the only person there conscious, with a man shot in the hallway, and another man a bloody mess in your front door."

Alicia still said nothing and stared at the table.

"Can we start with your name?"

Alicia mutter, "Is Kurt ok?"

"Kurtis Waverly is in surgery. They are trying to sew his jaw back together, but they are not sure about any brain swelling, he took a bit of a beating."

"Is Paul alive?"

"Paul Santino is also in surgery, though he was very drunk and that is not helping his blood clotting. If the shot was an inch lower it would have hit his aorta and he would have bled out before I got there."

Alicia sighed,"Thank you. I'm ready to talk now."

"That's good. I'm ready to listen. I heard what was said in the phone call, but I want to hear it from you."

Alicia told the officer the entire story as she saw it. She explained that she and Kurt were a newer couple and Paul was her ex. She also explained what Paul did to make her leave him for Kurt.

"So let me get this straight. Paul showed up at the door and knocked Kurtis out and then continually punched him until you shot him."

"Yes. That is pretty much what happened."

"What is your relationship to Gladys Heart?"

"She was the call receiver both when I was being saved by Kurt, and also when I called this morning. We became friends after Kurt saved me."

"Thank you. I will be back in a few minutes."

With that the officer got up and walked through the door. A couple of minutes later he came back and said, "Ma'am. We found your security system. I saw everything that happened in the video. It looks like a clear cut case of self defense, and you are free to go, but don't leave town in case we have more questions later."

"I just want to go to the hospital."

"Mrs. Heart is here waiting for you to be released. I apologize for everything. We will have a guard posted outside Mr. Santino's door, and he will be formally charged, when he is well enough to stand trial. I believe he is going to be going to jail for a very long time."

"Thank you."

As the officer held the door open for Alicia, she saw Gladys right away and ran to hug her sobbing into her shoulder. After a few minutes she leaned back and looked at Gladys. Gladys said, "Hon, if you are ready we can go to the hospital."

Alica sniffed, "Would you mind if I stopped by the apartment to get some new clothes, and a change for Kurt?"

"No, I don't mind at all. Let's go, hon."

On the drive to the apartment Alicia said nothing and just looked out the window occasionally sniffing, showing no emotion. As Gladys pulled up to the apartment building and parked. There was no indication that anything had changed except for one police car parked right outside her building. Gladys looked over at the almost feeble looking Arctic fox and said, "Are you ok?"

Alicia said nothing, just staring at the entrance to her building.

"If you don't want to go up I can get you and Kurt a change of clothes."

Alicia just stared at the door not moving, no expression changed on her face.

"Hon? I will be right back. I will get you two some new clothes and then we can go to the hospital."

Alicia didn't move, didn't say anything, didn't move a muscle.

Gladys opened the door, and walked over to the lone police car. There was a mouse in the driver's seat. Alicia saw Gladys say something to the mouse and pointed to Alicia. Alicia again didn't move.

Gladys then looked at the car and held up one finger saying, "One moment."

Gladys went upstairs. A few minutes later she came back down with one of Alicia's luggage bags stuffed full.

She stuffed it into the trunk and opened the driver's side. She looked at Alicia, and reached over pulling Alicia's chin to make Alicia look at her.

"Hon, I know it looks bleak right now but we will get through this. Kurt will be alright in the end, you'll see. There is no way that wolf would leave you alone in this world."

Alicia just stared at Gladys and looked into her eyes. She finally said, "Tha-" then she started bawling.

Gladys reached over and put her arms around Alicia pulling her into as comforting hug as she could give in a small sedan. Alicia just reached around Gladys grabbing the back of her shirt and cried as hard as she could. They were there for a few minutes, neither of them saying anything. Alicia finally stopped crying enough to look at Gladys again. She leaned back in her seat and said in barely a whisper, "Thank you."

"No problem, hon. Now lets go be with your mate."

Gladys drove to the hospital. This drive was almost as similar as the drive to the apartment. Alicia just sat there the entire way again just staring out the window. This time with a look of worry on her face.

Gladys pulled into the hospital parking garage and got Alicia's bag out of the trunk before walking to the passenger side of her car and opening the door to let Alicia out. Alicia slowly climbed out of the car and closed the door. Gladys put her arm around Alicia in a gentle embrace. Alicia thankful for the comforting embrace of a stronger arm to hold her, but she strongly wished that it was Kurt's arm and not Gladys'.

Gladys led them into the hospital and asked the information nurse where Kurt was. Alicia got a strange look from the nurse and Gladys explained what had happened and why Alicia was in an orange jumpsuit. The nurse turned back to Gladys and said something Alicia didn't hear. Gladys turned back to Alicia and said, "Hon, Kurt is still in ICU, and they are not allowing visitors at this time. I believe he is still in surgery. The nurse said that we could go to the waiting room. Do you want to change first?"

Alicia nodded slightly.

Gladys said, "There is a bathroom right down the hall here, and then we can go up to the waiting room. Do you need help changing?"

Alicia shook her head slightly.

"Ok."

Gladys then led Alicia to the bathroom carrying the bag of clothes with her. Gladys left the bag on the counter and said, "Now hon, I am going to be just outside the door, if you need anything at all just let me know ok?"

Alicia didn't say anything and turned to the bag.

Gladys walked out into the hall.

Alicia didn't waste any time. She took what was the best outfit she had, one of Kurt's favorites and put it on. She also spent time to clean herself up in the sink as best she could. She took solace in the routine of getting dressed and putting on make up that Gladys put in her bag. After she was done, aside from her hair, she looked like she was going for a night on the town with her mate. She put everything away even the orange jumpsuit and grabbed her bag of things carrying it out to Gladys. Gladys took the bag from her right away and said, "Hon, you look great. Kurt is going to want to get out of bed right away when he sees you like that."

"Thank you." This time she managed hold back the tears if nothing else to make sure she didn't smear her makeup.

Gladys put her arm around Alicia again and guided her to the elevator and into the empty ICU waiting room. As they sat down Alicia slid back into her emotionless face and stared at the table. Gladys looked at her and said, "I'm going to let the doctors know you are here waiting." Gladys walked away and a few minutes later came back and sat down next to Alicia. Gladys' phone rang, and she told whoever was on the other end that she wasn't going to be making it back to work. Gladys spent the rest of the time playing damage control when Kurt's work called to see where Kurt was, and Alicia's work called on Kurt's and Alicia's cell phones respectively.

Alicia was glad to have Gladys there, she still wasn't ready to talk about any of it to anyone, she was just too worried about Kurt. All she could think of was how the jaw bent and the look of Kurt's face, and then she kept thinking of what would happen when Paul woke up and he found out she shot him, she was terrified, but kept a perfect mask of emotionlessness.

What seemed like an eternity, but was actually only an hour later a female snow leopard in a doctors coat with a stethoscope draped around her neck walked up to them. Gladys and Alicia stood up to greet her, Alicia with a look of worry on her face.

The doctor reached out her hand and Gladys took it. The doctor said, "Hello my name is Dr. Avandus. I was the lead surgeon on Mr. Waverly. The surgery went well. We sewed his jaw back together with wire, but we had to put a muzzle on him to make sure he doesn't mess up the suture. Unfortunately that means that he can't talk, or eat solid food for at least six weeks. After that he will have to go into rehab to build his jaw muscles again. We started him on antibiotics to help stem off infection of the surgical site. The snout was not damaged so we are basically using that as a splint to help his lower jaw line up properly.

"As for the fear of brain swelling. I believe that fear has passed. It does not look like he will have any brain swelling but we will keep him under 24 hour observation just to make sure. It looks like he got lucky for the most part and was just knocked around."

"If you want, you can go see him, he should wake up from the anesthesia within an hour."

Gladys nodded and shook the doctor's hand and thanked the doctor. Alicia was already to the door when Gladys turned from the doctor. Alicia made her way into the room where Kurt was and sat down in the chair that was next to his bed. She held his hand and stared at Kurt's muzzled face. One more hour to wait.
