Born from the Ashes - Prologue

It is finished - I've really done it. I started this story when I was depressed and it helped me immensely to overcome that time. This is a prologue to my own story and it is supposed to be at least ten other chapters long. I'm uploading it in two versions (English and my own born language - czech). It presents an alternative future of our world, where Draconids and Humans live together. I borrowed the term Draconid from the warcraft universe, because it seems to me the best suited. Draconids are actually anthro dragons without wings, created formerly as slaves, but they advanced much further.

A big thanks belongs to the two wonderful persons - NegativeTheory - who has no active account here (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/negativetheory). And of course Foxohki, immensely supportive and close friend of mine. ( foxohki) They were willing to make a grammar review for me, and they gave me many tips, to improve it, so thanks a lot.

Every character in the story so far belongs to me, namely: Daryl Mason, lector Picson, Kevin Mason and Anna Mason, as well as story and world itself, so do not alter them or use them without me permit it. Otherwise I will take necessary steps to protect my belongings.

Thanks

Daralyn

_ Side notes for readers: _

--- If you want to know a little more, read the commentary below the story first.

--- The parts written in italic ,** although stated as direct speech, are actually thoughts of the main protagonist and aren't said aloud.**

--- The term "bastard" used for lector Picson has no real meaning about his origins, but it is rather an expression of negative feelings of main protagonist - that is the reason why it is used in almost in every sentence.

--- Beginning of the story is somewhat cliché, but do not worry. I have thought up about five or so different beginnings, but this one suits best to the frame of this work.

--- This part is more Prologue than main storyline, and explains basic things to the reader. Similar parts will occur in later chapters sideways of the main storyline. I have prepared many things, for example their religion, sociology, wedding ritual and of course History of Draconid Wars.

Chapters are generally shorter than this prologue.

Born from the Ashes: The History of the Daconid Wars

_ " They are still changing the lessons in the classrooms - that is so annoying - yeah, there we are. " _ I knocked, then opened a door, and suddenly there were sixty pairs of eyes watching me.

"Daryl Mason - late as always. Do I really need to remind you how important are these lessons for your studies? Where do you expect to get with this behavior?"

"There is no need to remind me of that, but you're enjoying my humiliation you bastard."

"So sit down god damn it, and stop making troubles already. As I said before I was so impudently interrupted by mister 'Always on time', we had no guilt, as humans, on battles that raged for all those decades..."

"No guilt you say? So not only a bastard but also a racist with a xenophobical nature? You can't see a bus over a sitting dog, but your superiority complex needs to be aroused all the time. How it is possible that this idiot can teach about Draconid Wars in the most prestige university in the world? Yes sir, I'm on my way."

"The wars we were forced to endure are finally just a bad memory..."

"My name is Daryl Mason. I'm belonging to a prominent family of Masons, dated even before the war era. We are wealthy and pure as my father always reminds me - as it really mattered. With the money my family gave me to cover terrible relationships, I was able to live on the high level. My...dad would be massively surprised if he discovers that most of the money I'm getting ends up on my private bank account for later needs. As the oldest son, I need to pretend I'm 'normal', because I'm the first in line for the inheritance. Honesty I don't believe it will last for very long this way. I had bad connections with my family and our relationships were always cold at best. Since the time of puberty, when I created my own opinions on the world around me, my priorities were somewhere else than in our wealthy and pure family. My Father wanted to disinherit me already when he found out my study specialization. _ The Modern History _, as a main aiming, but also Draconid sociology, laws and religion. He has no idea about that, of course."

"He changes his mind later on, since I decided to attend the Nova Yoruk Academy. That is one of the most prestigious colleges in the world, opened shortly after rebuilding an old city, when those peace decrees were assigned seven hundred years ago. I'm getting along alright with most of the lecturers here except this bastard. Like I said, the university in Nova Yoruk is almost as same prestigious as the one in Bohemia, albeit it is on the other end of world. Studying here is quite expensive actually - one semester takes around thirty to forty thousand dollars. It doesn't matter really. My father holds over two hundreds oil wells around the world and earns millions each month. If there is something good about him, it is that he was always willing to give us what we wanted. He could be good father after all, except one - well, few things actually. He is fucking racist and he is obsessed by pure family line. Don't take it bad, the humans of any color or nationality are fine for him, but he hates Draconids with a deadly passion. Also he thinks that money and prestige is everything and the one who doesn't share his believes isn't worthy of his time or attention."

The pencil flying towards my face pulled me back to reality in an instant. "Am I interrupting you, Mr. Mason? I just stated the year and reasons for the first Draconid war - but you are not interested at all, right?"

I was let out a bored sigh. "Yes - I'm interested - the first war started in the 2102, as the last possible way to assure equality for Draconids."

"Hrm, seems you know something after all - interesting - so as I said...."

"What game are you playing on me ,damn it? Of course I'm interested. With a different lector I wouldn't let my attention off for a second, but you are melding with background even when standing on a chair, bastard!"

"Our mother was always the submissive one, and she was never able to defend us or stand up against father. Not that he was doing something dirty or illegal to us, but she admired him as a hero, and that doesn't change to this day. Younger brother Kevin is a true son of his father. Self-praised, stubborn and obsessed by a pure line and money. I expect that he takes his part promptly when my father disinherit me. And that won't take long at all."

"My sister Anna is the youngest. She turned sixteen just last month. She was always very reasonable and intelligent, and that didn't change in puberty at all. But I have no idea where her priorities are. Anna never expresses complaints aloud, but I have a feeling that she is not satisfied with our...dad as well. I simply hope that she gives priority to reason before money, but on the other hand I don't want to rob her of family money, at least 'till she has her own life. And I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if it will be my fault. She is the only one in the entire family who cares for me and accepts me without any doubts. But these thoughts won't take me anywhere.... "

"Mason! Do you want me to switch this presentation to a one better suited for your hour or what?" Picson asked sarcastically." I just spoke about... but you do not care at all, and I don't want to piss myself off.

"Well then, what is this - you hypocritical bastard..."

"But I'm telling you this - with that attitude I won't let you pass finals - I will make you a deterrent example for all others. Family or not, you are a slacker!"

"I'm quite anxious for this. I knew more about this subject at thirteen, than you know now. Try something and I will embarrass you before the whole committee board so much that they won't let you teach even on elementary school."

"Yes you didn't mishear yourself - we have already year 3026. Maybe you wonder how it is possible that a life standard and technology is almost identical to the one a thousand years ago. They call it _ _The second Dark Age of Humanity_ _ - the age that followed after the long-term war with Draconids. Only roughly 12% of all humans and 7% of all Dragons survived this onslaught. When the peace decrees were signed, both cultures started to work together to bring our destroyed world to the new age of prosperity. That Included cities and technology discovered in scraps of databases and databanks around the world, as well as simple population. Now both races are equal to each other, but mistrust and hate still linger in some humans. I said humans intentionally, because Draconids don't know hypocrisy at all."

"At the Brink of the third millennium existed the so called 'Furry Fandom' on our planet. It was a really large group of writers, artists and animators who admired Anthro art. Those were animals with humanoid figures and human characteristics. They were generally based on favorite film, comic or videogame characters, but there were also many of them based simply on an animal world. No matter if predators like Lions and Hyenas, or herbivore animals like bovines or horses - so called Furries, snakes, alligators or dragons - so called Scallies or Avians based on birds. If someone were to say that something like this would be real someday, people in the community would let out a hopeful sigh, and people outside would burst into laughter, or maybe put him in mental sanatorium. But as we know, history has tendencies to realize things that we think as impossible in a future."

"Everything started in the year 2027. Genetic tests and discoveries were so beneficial that healthcare jumped onto a whole new level. There were body parts and organs raised artificially as reserve for transplantations. The average age was almost doubled and signs of aging delayed for at least 40 years, as well as diseases and illnesses like cancer and AIDS were almost extinguished. But humans wanted something more. They wanted a cheap labor force with only so much brain activity to be able follow orders, but had no real awareness of themselves. These were supposed to be used for any boring home jobs, hard, dirty or dangerous tasks. To create these husks was no problem for modern technology, but they must have been much stronger and durable than humans to be able do more work and give people more free time. Sure - they could have been robots after all, but modern society was too scared of events similar to Y2K, Terminator or Ghets from Mass Effect. And frankly, no one had any idea what could happen if they really created functional AI. So they chose gene code modifications. But how to create something better than human, strong enough but also simple enough to be controllable?

"Nobody really knows who started all of this, but after some time I think it was not the best idea to combine human and reptile DNA into one pattern. And so, after a few years and countless tests later, the husks of draconids started to make their way out of the first lines and genetic tanks for hundreds of billion dollars. These creatures had only limited brain activity and they were taught only those abilities required for their own classification. This helped immensely to keep enough information stored away from slave labor. Everything was fine for twelve years or so, but finally there would always be someone who wanted to take advantage over others. Influence, power, money, anything. Draconids were husks without consciousness, they were strong, durable, they had no own ideas, no need for pay or maintenance and if they become ill or hurt, they simply dispose of them as any other trash. After some time, governments started to demand part of them as training warfare objects for army operations, secrets projects and so on. It was cheaper, and there was no way the classified information could get out of a restricted area, as well the possibility to dispense them without any moral problems, after the project was completed. But behind this idea was a need to create army reserves, easily controllable and dispensable super soldiers. They started to teach this group not only manual labor, but tactics and engineering as well."

"But the main thing was that the draconids were slowly gaining consciousness and self-awareness. Again - no one had any idea when it all was started, but maybe it was some flaw in the creation program. They had part of our human genes after all. Each series, or now maybe better generation, was more intelligent and able to follow more complex orders. They never protest, so normal users saw no real problem there, but give an automatic shotgun or helicopter into the hands of semi-intelligent dragon, and that was exactly what happened in the army. Draconids were not aggressive or warlike by nature, but for an expanding mind the repetitive activity became boring after some time. They realized they wanted something else out to life, they wanted to be free, to explore a world without the boundaries of an owner's estate, not to be slaves or goods. They wanted to be equal to humans in every way - because what is wrong about that, right? First secretly and later openly they created clubs, forums and groups to enhance their own rights."

"Other groups simply refused doing gross or humiliating tasks, or refused working for free from now on. But what to do - they were such an indispensable part of the infrastructure, that it could destroy the economy of 3/4 of the world. When they realized this - it was just one step to a full walkout. Around 2060, after a two week long boycott of all the technological points and centres, they were given at least basic rights - right basic ones... Still, they were a lower cast, with small pays and worse jobs if they worked for human employers and not for their own."

"Humans probably though that they had done enough for the 'reptiles', but it was not equality. Draconid society started to form itself, the laws and religion was taken mostly from humans, but they applied their own principles to it as well. During the next forty years, nothing major happened and over all protests, petitions and pleas all things remained the same. It was the last straw..."

"Draconids are actually oviparous (egg laying) mammals, because they have genes of both - humans and reptiles of many spices as well. They mature much faster than humans, physically and mentally alike. Around the ninth year of age, they come into puberty and by fifteen they are fully matured. But they were growing up to the twenty-first year to be at the peak. They live generally as long as humans, on an average to one hundred and ten, but they aren't getting older by the same way as humans do. The dragoness in ninety can look same as in thirty, and as well is still able to lay her eggs at that age. They wither away only few weeks or months before death, no matter if the reason is age or deathly illness. After six months of gravidity they lay one, exceptionally two eggs, which will take another month to hatch, and then they breast-feed their hatchlings for around ten week before they start to eat the normal firm food. Dragonesses are able to prevent gravidity by their own hormones, and if they decided to be gravid, they are even able to affect the gender of the hatchling. Giving a daughter to their life-long partner, so called bondmate, is the biggest testimony of faith and love"

"Although they have wedding rituals, they are not called man and wife. Their chosen one is a life-long partner or bondmate under all laws and traditions of their kind. They live within a matriarchy. Belong to thirteen different clans based on the series created for specific types of jobs in the days of slavery. Every clan is led by a so called 'Exarch', which is chosen from the most experienced, but not necessarily the oldest females. Exarch is the same as any other president, king or dictator of the human state. Every clan has their own territories and those are their home havens. In the middle of the territory stand the Capitol of the concrete clan, called simply 'The Den'. That is a military, political and cultural center of each clan, and after wars, these buildings are also created as self-sufficient fortresses, able to withstand a long blockade, sedge, massive explosion, or even radioactive fallout for at least three or four years consistently. The head of the clan - Exarch has the same rank as any other exarch from any other clan, no matter how strong or big and it is equal to any human leader, except the highest president of Human Union. And that is only figuratively speaking. Equal to him is only the Draconic council, created from all exarchs in the time of need. Any member of the clan - if he/she is not exiled - has the same rights, and the clan will take care of him if needed, no matter the financial cost, support or trial. No member can be judged by Human laws, as well as no human can be charged by Draconid ones, if he is not member of the clan himself. This is possible in the case that he/she becomes a bondmate of dragon or dragoness under all laws and traditions of their kind, and leave all affiliations of their former kind. Because the Draconids have partially human DNA, they are able to mate themselves with humans and even have a progeny. These interspecies relationships aren't as scarce, like five hundred years ago. Offspring from this bond have the same rights in a clan as their parents or any other pure-blood draconid. Their bodies are different, but only in details. They have a more slender body shape, but still strong enough to be equal to humans in any way and they have five fingers on a hand instead of four like a pure-blood, as well as four claws on foot instead of normal three. They mature slightly later than a pure-blood, generally by two or three years. Otherwise they are still same as their parents.
