#1 of Cloakers Universe - Treading

First chapter of a new arc in the WDHBM universe~ Also, look for things getting posted more rapidly for a while here. I'm going to try to work much more consistently at least for a little bit.

--Fen--

"Wake up Fen, you're gonna be late!" I groan, rubbing at my eyes and feeling a crumb or two of dried eye-gunk fall from the corners. I roll to the left and slide my hips out of the bed, letting my paws press against the cool floor while I focus on trying to work myself out of groggy, head-ringing feeling of trying to wake up on a school-day. It doesn't work, but I slowly get myself up onto my feet anyway.

"I'm awake, mom" I shout downstairs while moving as if I were exhausted. God I hate mornings. After getting dressed, I head downstairs to get breakfast, smiling a little as a white wolfess, my mom, walks into the dining room and settles a plate of waffles down in front of me. "Thanks, Mom" I say while starting to pour syrup over the fluffy circles of bread. The sweet taste causes my tail to flick happily but it's short-lived.

"You only have a couple minutes, Fen. Comeon, eat and get your stuff so you can make it to the bus." I groan a little, growling beneath my breath while giving a slight nod. I cut large pieces and shove the waffles into my mouth, enjoying the flavor, but unable to savor it. I quickly gather my stuff up and get my backpack on, looking down and patting my jean pockets to make certain everything is there.

"Ah ah, what'd you forget?" She peers at me sternly; I know what it is immediately.

"Sorry..." I slip my cloaker off of my finger, returning to my smaller, natural height of about 4 inches. The experience, as usual, is dizzying. I take a few moments to let my brain re-adjust, taking a stare around the room and enjoying how massive everything looks. I'd always kind of enjoyed having it off when I could... On the rare occasions my parents would let me... Or when I felt brave enough to do it away from home. Something about looking up at things was just so interesting. A tremble issues through the floor as my mother gives her foot an impatient tap. "Err.." I quickly slip the cloaker back on around my tailbase, making certain my jeans hide it well enough to keep it from being easily accessed or seen. My mom grins at me and pulls me into a tight, loving hug. My arms wrap around her in return and my tail sways gently behind me.

I feel her shift to look down at the top of my head before she speaks gently. "You just be careful, alright? Nothing has happened yet but who knows what they'll do now that they know about our cloakers. Call me if anything happens and, remember, if someone should find out... Run. Don't look back." She smiles. "I love you, Fen."

"I know, I know, and I love you too, Mom." I groan, waving a paw dismissively. She gives the same speech every morning.

"Yea yea, alright, off with you" She grins and I grin back, turning to run out of the door.

Upon exiting my home, the cold air of the spring morning rushes through my fur. I can smell rain as well as the various trees and plants starting to grow in the gardens of our neighbors. I jog down the street, ears swivelling at the various sounds; the highway 3 miles to the east of our home filled with people driving to work, the bus stopping at the stop before mine. The cool air rustles my fur again and breaks my attention, bringing me back to where I'm now standing at my bus stop.

"Hey, Fen." A raccoon grins, walking up next to me. Another micro, named Sian but I always call him Sai. He's part of one of the few micro families my mom and dad don't mind being seen with. "Hey Sai, so are your parents still flipping out about those cloaker detectors too?" I mumble a little bit, winning a chuckle from the 'coon.

"Run and don't look back." He mocks the tone of both our mothers, nearly perfectly I might add. "Really, though, I guess that's what I'd really do if one of them found me." The 'coon shrugs. "I mean, we know how some of them get."

"Yea, I hear you. Why risk it? If any of us get caught it'll probably be Dan. All he can ever talk about lately is how he'd beat a giant up for finding his cloaker."

Sian shakes his head, letting out an exasperated groan. "Yea, he's even worse than those guys that like to act extra brave on internet forums. At least they'll likely never get into the situations they dream about. I could easily see Dan ending up dangling from some giant's cock."

"Alright alright, let's not go further than that. You and I both know that no micro deserves something like that. Not even Dan... though, it would be pretty funny." I grin and we bump fists before the bus drives up. Sian walks on first and I follow closely behind. We settle next to one another and the bulk of the trip to the school is filled with laughing about local events or the episode of true lives that aired yesterday. The episode, coincidentally, is about an innocent, normal, upstanding fur finding out that her mate is actually a micro. "I still can't get over her reaction. Jumping on a chair and screaming? Really? As if he were going to suddenly turn feral and bite her toe or something." Sian gigglefits as we recall the episode.

The bus pulls up to the school and stops, opening the door to allow students off.

"Alright, Fen. Lunch as usual?" Sian asks and I simply give a nod. "Yep, same meeting place." With that, Sian waves and trots quickly towards his class, weaving through groups of taller students while I make my way to the swimming pool to take a little dip before things begins. The only thing about taking the bus is that we arrive 40 minutes early, meaning you either wait outside of class as Sian is doing or you find something else to do. Lately, I'd started to take up swimming. Best part is that the pool is usually clear in the morning so I can do a couple laps and get out without having to embarass myself in front of one of the more aquatically adept species.

By the time I make it into the pool, I only have about 30 minutes -- plenty of time. The water soaks my fur and the smell of chlorine is strong, nearly too strong. I ignore it, though, and start to swim, feeling the water glide smoothly through my fur while I kick to propel myself forward.

--NAKI--

'At least it's all over' I think to myself, eyes closed while I glide through the deepest end of the school's pool. It's not too deep... only around 10ft or so. It's fun, as well as relaxing. I always feel at my best in the water where I can dance around or speed past the land-locked creatures that're more clumsy in the water. My ears pick a noise up, something splashing nearby, making an absolute ruckus above. I kick into gear and glide swiftly over to where the noise is coming from, grinning a little when I see a wolf attempting to swim. He's making a good effort of it but his form is all wrong; an obvious beginner. I sneak beneath him and give his stomach a poke between his erratic kicking.

The yelping noise is priceless, I can't help but laugh beneath the water, causing bubbles of air to float up while I stick my head out and peer at the wolf now flailing and grasping onto the rim at the side of the pool. "Heheh, sorry man, I couldn't help it." I glide over to him and start treading only a few feet away. His expression is... weird, at best. He doesn't say anything at first, he simply watches me as if he'd seen a ghost; mouth hanging open a little, eyes widened.

"Ahh, I'm Naki." I say, holding a paw out which he shies away from at first before grasping and giving a loose shake.

"F-Fen... Ahh... Sorry." The wolf states quickly, blushing somewhat. His eyes trace down over the water for a moment as if he's looking for what else to say.

"Your form is all wrong." I say gently, shifting so that I'm not in the way anymore. "Don't fight against the water, let it work with you. Powerful, graceful movements instead of haphazard flailing. If you want I could give you some pointers." I offer, and that seems to finally get him calmed.

"Yea! I'd like that." The wolf's tail swishes slowly in the water beneath and I can't help but grin at the glint in his eyes. Something about it makes me happy, maybe it's that I rarely see any of them interested in swimming at all. "Alright, so push off and straighten your body." I state, watching him follow the motions I give him. While we practice, I can't help but notice the little silver ring pressed against his tailbase, barely visible from the outside of his swim trunks; a strange place to keep jewelry, but I give it only a moment's thought. "You're a senior too?" I ask at some point in the small conversation we have while he practices. "Huh, this school must too big for us to have missed each other for three whole years. Then again, I guess swimming isn't the most popular sport." I say, perhaps with a little too much growl. It's a point of annoyance I hope doesn't come off as too obvious.

"Yea, but I've heard of you." He smiles while practicing the front crawl. "You're best swimmer this school has."

I blush a little but wave off denying it. I know it's better to be humble but I needed a compliment like that after the week I had. By the end of our practice, he's front-crawling as if he'd been doing it since he were a pup.

"Not bad for a gup." I state while he, apparently, takes offense. "Well I'm not really meant for swimming." He starts to become defensive at which point I simply wave a paw. "It's not an insult, you did really well. I'm serious." I chuckle and he seems content to hear it.

"I uh... I come here most mornings. When do you normally come around?" He asks while I make my way towards the edge of the pool.

"Whenever, really... But I could use the company, so maybe I'll be here tomorrow morning too. I have to practice up anyway, championship isn't going to win itself." We climb out of the water and he shifts a little on his feet. I finally get a good look at him. He's a gray wolf, typical fur patterns for the most part but with a cute little birth-patch of brown fur plastered between his eyes all of the way up between his ears and towards the back of his head. I can't see the rest of it, but I imagine it travels down his back as well. Those orange eyes of his tie it all together well.

"Err.. I'm almost late." He states while looking up at the large, plain-looking clock on the wall above the doors. "Take care, Naki... See you tomorrow." He waves and turns to leave. I give a wave and move to get my own clothing on. It's strange, but I really am looking forward to tomorrow morning despite hardly even knowing the wolf. I shrug it off and sweep a towel over my body to get ready for first period.
