Reality slip Ch 2 - Stuff the rabbit hole I'll take the car

I jerk forward my heart trying to smash its way out of my rib cage as my body prepares to flee from a foe that's not there. The beating of my heart consumes my senses as the blood rushes round in my head, slowly the cloud of sleep clears from my vision allowing me to take stock of my surrounding, sensation starts to awaken in my various forgotten limbs as leaning back a bit can feel the sweat soaked sheets beneath me. Looking round realising I'm back in my rather cramped apartment in bed with the light on. As my body calms down from its shock I try to find out the time from my bed side clock but it seen to have reset during the night 'power failed maybe'. I look across my room to the window, even with the blinds can tell its still dark out. My attention is pulled to the sudden blaring of an electric guitar from my phone, "Cautionary Warning"* lets me know someone is trying to ring me. Leaning over I pick up the smartphone off my bedside table checking the time before answering, it's flashing 00:00. 'that's not right?' Answering in my usual bored almost monotone voice, seeing as there is no caller id and for the god awful hour their ringing at.

"Hello?" The return is a deep male voice but there is something else there behind it but the slight distortion from the phone is making it hard to make out ???? "So when are you going to meet me?" Dropping the monotone as I'm somewhat slightly confused at this point "Sorry I think you've got wrong number" ???? "Nope, there is only one phone here so therefore one number" Now I'm really confused 'I don't want to be dealing with this' "Yeeeh right, any way wrong number sorry" I quickly disconnecting the phone before he can say anything else, letting it slip from my hand on to the bed. Leaning back I try to remember what the dream was that caused my fright Electric guitars blare out from my phone again. Sitting back up I see the same number on the phone a before *sigh*"hello?" ???? "it's not nice to hang up on some one who's talking to you" the voice said with a slight chuckle 'This is beginning to irritate me' With obvious amount s emotion in my voice "I told you, you have the wrong number" ???? " I'd rather do this face to face open the door so we can chat" the voice reply's with a nonchalant tone a bit nervous now "What are you talking about?" ???"I'm just outside, open the door" continuing the nonchalant tone which was an ever growing opposite to where my emotions were going Sitting up I slip on some trousers and head to the front door. Opening the door from my bedroom to the livingroom, the phone slips from my hand as before me is a seemingly endless dark void. The light from my room barely pierces the darkness more than 10ft.A voice not far off my own emanates from the void, but now without the distortion from the phone you can hear a distinct background growl to it. ????"Ahhh much better, I always feel the personal approach is better than indirect contact, but then that's because you do" he announces with a slight chucke Taking a couple of tentative steps back I gather a usable bit of courage and stutter "w who are y you?" ????"you" came the straight reply This direct reply didn't help my nerves any "I'm Charles, Who are you?" ????"As I just said I'm you" the voice keeping the mirth in its voice A dark figure illuminated by faint markings on the body walked just out of clear sight in the void I rack my brain truing to under stand this rather odd situation in a moment or clarity or being downright cliché about the moment "Is this one of those weird chats you have with your subconscious like you see on TV?" The figure stops for a moment as if to ponder what I had just said ????"Sort of, but not quite, I'm who you're going to be not to long from now, I suppose you could call me a future echo caused by magic" 'magic?' "But there's no such thing as magic" disbelief evident in my tone ????"Ha!, that's what you think" came the snarky reply "What do you mean?" ????"youll see" 'oh that's helpful' The figure stops again and as his head whips round there are blue and red streaks from the glow trailing the movement as he looked behind him. ????"looks like times up and you need to wake up, you're about to get a big lesson in something that doesn't exist" the voice says firmly The room around me suddenly vanishes along with my main light source leaving me with only the illumination from my up turned phone and the glow from the figure. ???? "I find the best way to wake up is to be scared suddenly and you'll get the adrenalin boost , aren't you lucky, you'll need it" "what are you tal...?" Before I can finish my sentence the figure darts towards me growing rapidly in size and lunges at me from a few meters away. As the glow from my phone illuminates the figure all I can see is a giant gaiping maw filled with fangs.

As the impact registers I start forward in a very familiar feeling but this time cracking my head on the steering wheel of my car. "oww! you son of a bi....!" Looking out the windscreen and seeing nothing but shrouded Forrest only broken by the ray of light breaking though the canopy, the events of the previous day come flooding back. Blast craters, wolf-men, lizard-men , giant wolves, and even dragons , ending with me fleeing into the forest. -------------------------------------flashback----------------------------------------- 5 hours earlier By the time I had finally managed to release the accelerator, having no idea of my location, not that I had much of a clue before driving though the Forrest. Once the car finally ground to a stop and i cut the engine exhaustion caught up with me and I passed out in the driver's seat. -----------------------------------End flashback-------------------------------------- There's an almighty bang as the car lurches a bit to the left along with a flash right next to my head. The noise sends me reeling in pain as I clasp my hands over my right ear leaving me with a high pitched whistle in my ear, forcing my head to look out of the side window to find what had caused the car to lurch. What I see can only describe as a bear on steroids with what appear to be bone spikes sticking out of it in rather ungainly places. The mutant bear is regaining its footing after it was seemingly blasted backwards leaving a shallow six meter trough dug into the underbrush and starts to charge the car only to come within an inch of smashing the driver side door in. Another bang sends the bear backwards though the air again. My dulled hearing from the first event leaves me with only shock and fear removing all my other senses and only watching in a stupor, not thinking about starting the car and fleeing as the mutant bear tries again and again to get to me. Suddenly a strange calm falls on the bear after its latest attempt, the bear walks up to the car, stares at it and me for what seems an eternity. I stare back in to its almost vacant reptilian eyes, which seem to contain a cold rage. After a time it stands on all fours and leans onto the car and starts to push , but this time there is no rebound just the disturbing sound of metal groaning under pressure. It stops leaning and contorts it head with no apartment care for its bone, it's muzzle twisted with a sickening look of 'got you now' . As it gets back to leaning more and more of its weight on the door emphasising the metal voicing its protest. Suddenly a crack appears in the window corner with a sicking crunch. The noise jars me out of my stupor with a small jump causing me to realise quickly reach to start the car, but in the process of doing so flash illuminates the inside of my car for a moment. Flicking my head round in the hopes of seeing the bear blasted back again to give me more time. I see the bear being encased in a layer of ice that flows round its body. As its motion finally stops after having pushed the door in quite a way, causing a large spider web effect on the window, a shadow drops down from the canopy of the trees across from me and the bear. Revealing it's self to be a..... walking..... Cat?. 5-6ft high and walking on digi-grade feet, it had dark grey fur laced with black stripes down its arms and thighs that almost seem to absorb the light. I realise its wearing very little apart from a belt containing a number of pouches and a leather baldric off which is hanging a sword and scabbard. Its feline head fixated on the bear as it makes its way over, holding the scabbard with its left paw drawing the sword in a single clean motion. It jogs towards the large mutant bear braking into a dash as the ice begins to crack and pop flicking little shards of its tomb about, some rebounding away from my car with little pops. It climbs upon the iced bears back using this bone spikes as foot holds. Chunks of the ice shell break off revealing the creatures face as it twists its neck trying to tear the cat from its back, the cat quickly mutters something causing the sword to glow red, clasping the hilt with both hands it plunges it through the ice with a hiss and into the back of the bears neck causing the bear to roar out in agony. Spotting the cat as it quickly waves its paw at me in in the universal get down sign while it hangs onto a back spick as the bear thrashes and writhes as much as is tomb will allow. I quickly duck, spotting the cat being thrown off but catching the landing just before my head is under the window frame, after a few seconds there is a small rumble quickly followed by a series of pops like a firecracker as the car lurches again Peering over the window frame see what had happened, I find cat picking itself up while brushing off remnants of the ice shell that appears to have shattered leaving no sign of the bear. Apparently no worse off the cat-person approaches the car and stops about 6 feet away from me looking me over trying to work out what to do next. I release my death grip on the steering wheel as I try to recollect my nerves before continuing, slumping back in the seat I look to the cat, seeing it still staring at me with its arms folded. Realising I don't have a clue where I am as taking a quick glance at my surroundings again but only seeing shrouded forest, looking to the cat again mulling over my options coming to one conclusion 'I'm going to need its help'. Deciding to take up the initiative as it appears to be content to stare at me and get this rather odd ball rolling. In a slightly shaky voice "um ... thank you for helping me" The cat-person is slightly taken back but quickly recovers and says something back but all I can hear is cat noises and a bit of gibberish. I try to force more confidence into my voice "Sorry I don't understand you, can you understand me?" I sit there watching the cat man for any sign of understanding but it only gives me an odd expression while its ear flicks. 'oh this isn't working' "ok um nod your head if you can understand me" augmenting what I'm saying by nodding my head making me feel just a little foolish Once again I sit there and watch the cat for a response after a moment the cat gives a single nod of its head as it continues to study me with its eyes. 'that's a start' "ok now that I know you can understand me nod your head for yes and shake for no, am I on earth?" After giving me an odd look the cat gives a nod I get a small wave of relief wash over me but I stop when I think about my next question "am I still in the USA?" Shake I felt my stomach tighten as I begin to run the numerous possibility's though my head about where I am but coming up with no definitive out comes I'm still left with one choice "Can you help me?" After pondering this question for a moment the cat gets a slightly distant look in its eyes but still nods though slowly as if it isn't completely sure. "ok can you get me back home? " The cat thinks about this again looking at me very carefully and points down a path in the tree line. Looking at the path it seems just big enough for my car, turning back to the cat to thank it for the help I realise its vanished. "this has to be the weirdest dream of my life, or I'm in trouble" Reaching for the keys and start the car, I grip the steering wheel which is still slick from the grip death from before and head down the path with no idea where I'm going, trying to avoid the larger bumps to stop the window from cracking even more. 30 minuites later

The trees part revealing a clearing about 30ft across and as far as I can see the trees are too dense for me to continue onwards. Stopping the engine, taking a long carful look round and listen to make sure there aren't any dangers, I spot that the path behind me has vanished into dense forest leaving me with no way out of this clearing in my car. "Where the hell did the path go? Damn it, that stupid cat is playing me for a fool!" *sigh*"well even so I don't seem to have much choice about how to proceed" I take another quick look around for dangers and hop out of the car, the moment I touched the ground I feel a shock up my spine and tingle all over like my whole body had been asleep, the feeling passes and I shrug it off as a side effect of being cramped up in a car for hours and all that's happened. Looking round at the scenery with out the tint of the windows Popping open the boot with occasional glances round the clearing i pull out unnecessary item as I search my stuff for specific items, pulling out a black plastic case about 4ft long, popping the catches to open the lid and I pull out the parts to my new 65lb re-curve bow and 12 3-blade board head arrows and 8 field arrows I had bought for the hunting trip. It took me a long time to work up to this poundage on a bow and I had been waiting for the trip before I used it, well that plans out the window but it could still be use it to protect myself with. After assembling the bow and donning my quiver on my belt I pull my hiking back pack out and placed a few survival supply's in a back pack and made ready to leave but first I pulled out a GPS gadget I picked up just for this trip after learning from the mistakes of the past. On a previous trip to the Forrest I was going to be hunting in I found out that GPS don't like working there. I hadn't brought any other navigation equipment thinking I wouldn't need it and managed to get lost in the woods for 3 days before I was found. After turning on the GPS surprise surprise no signal. flipping it over and pulling out a small draw on the side and I remove a small rectangle, this funky little gismo is a transmitter that lets the GPS know where it is at all times without using satellites, it has a range of about 40 miles through dense forest before signal starts declining. Originally planning to leave this in the cabin or on my car as its solar powered so that I could find my way back without any problems. Leaning in the driver side door I place the transmitter on the dash under the windscreen so it can't get knocked off but can still get sun, after resetting the GPS to check to see if it's getting a signal. I'm rewarded with a satisfying little arrow in my GPS screen and even an altimeter in relation to the transmitter (what good that does me) . Happy with my preparations I lock the car up just be sure but mostly out of habit and head into the forest in the direction the cat pointed me. As I walk through the forest the calls of animal and birds 'I think there birds' can be heard though the tree around me but the dense foliage and spacing made it impossible to see more than 50 feet in any direction. Further enforced by the fine mist that begun to develop causing the already shrouded forest unnerve me more. I come to a halt as all the hair on the back of my neck rises as the feeling I'm being stalked begins to force it way into my forethoughts, slipping an arrow from my quiver and nock it just in case but I don't draw the bow as doing that for too long will tire me out fast. Now loaded I slowly continues on my way being extra vigilant of my surroundings trying to keep my breath shallow but steady and movement slow to keep my noise down. I stop as the feeling get worse and I realise a big factor, the Forrest is totally absent of sound, even the trees seem to have stilled in the presence of some unseen foe. As I crouch down resting my knee in a patch of damp earth as I rest my back on thick tree to give myself a solid side covered from approach, I slow my breathing to calm myself. Concentrating on my surroundings I listen for any noise that could betray who is stalking me. I look slowly at my surrounding concentrating my sight the trees and mist for any sign of the presence, the silence is shattered as a twig snaps behind where I'm looking that might as well of been a howitzer going off. I spin round to face my stalker to find .....Nothing?

'ok it knows I'm onto it, so were did it go' A shadow looms next to mine on the ground and I can feel the movement of the air from its breath on the back of my neck "oh shi...." An impact to the back of my head sends me to the floor as I greet the darkness again that day, 'Bad day' is all I can think as the last thing I sense are multiple sets of paws materialising around me from the shadows and being lifted by pair of furry hands.
