"...Lyr... Lyrius... Hey, Lyrius?! Are you listening?"

I jerked up in my usual seat on one of the two sofas in the room, ducking my head slightly, ruffling my head-fur in embarrassment, "U-uhh... Y-yeah, sorry, Ushio..."

Ushio was our fearless leader. We had been together for awhile now. 'We' being the Afterlife group. She formed the group to fight against... Well, I'm getting ahead of myself, now. Maybe I should explain it from the beginning...

The last thing I remember before waking up here was the crash. I was driving to a friends house, finally going through on a plan to go to the beach, one we've had for awhile. I looked down to adjust the volume on the radio, only to look back up to a truck barreling headlong at me.

And I was pretty sure the truck was going to win...

Chapter One

The next thing I knew, I was waking up to a sharp poking in my side. I may have been a little disoriented... Okay, a lot disoriented... but I still noticed that I was laying on concrete, I could smell fresh-cut grass on the wind, and birds singing. This was... odd, to say the least, at least to me. Did I not mention? I lived in the city. Not much in the way of grass or birds...

Anyways, I groaned and opened my eyes, the sight of a young fox in a girls' school uniform greeting me. Not the least bit odd, until you account for the rifle butted to her shoulder. At least she hadn't been aiming at me. Instead, she was resting the tripod on a short wall, apparently looking down onto the track field.

"Oh? Awake finally? I need you to do something for me. Grab that gun over there," she said, tilting her head towards said gun next to her, "And help me with this guy..."

I was, as you would imagine, a little taken aback by this statement. I sat up, looking over the wall, a silver-furred figure catching my eye, "Is that who you're talking about...?" I asked, a bit tentative. I got a quick, "Who else would I be talking about, dumbass?!" in response. That was the first time I got a good look at her.

She may have looked slightly older from behind, but now I could see she was about seventeen. She had dyed her head-fur a pinkish color, which worked surprisingly well for her. But what caught me the most was how blue her eyes were, even flashing in annoyance at me. However, I digress.

She glared at me, sending a terrified shiver down my spine. She sighed and shook her head in disgust, "You don't remember anything, do you?" she asked; her only answer in the form of me shaking my head. I didn't trust myself to speak, yet. She sighed yet again, mumbling something about somebody or another, "...shouldn't have expected anything..." She looked at me directly again, nodding her head in a determined way, "Right. You should join my group. We have a few 'official' names, but we call ourselves Afterlife."

She glanced down at the field, quickly bringing the rifle to her shoulder again, "Shit..." she growled softly, pressing the button on the radio at her hip, "Shugo's on the move. Tenshi must've called him." A chorus of 'roger' greeted her words, alerting me to the fact that there were others out there, watching, too.

I cleared my throat, sitting up more again, "Uhhh... What's going on here...?"

She turned to look at me again, shrugging her shoulders, "I'm not quite sure. None of us are, really. But the last thing any of us can remember is dying... before waking up here. There use to be more of us, but, sometimes, Shugo or Tenshi gets a hold on one of us, and runs off. We never see them again..." she trailed off, a sad look in her eye. She looked back up to me, nodding in that determined way again, and grinned, "That's why I formed this group. To fight back. Not that it works too well..."

"Why's that...?" I asked, eyeing the gun in her paws. It looked like that guy, Shugo, or whatever, wouldn't stand a chance against it.

"Oh," she started replying, that grin still on her muzzle as she leaned down to the scope again, "We can't die."

As you could imagine, I was very, very, confused. Before I could get anything more than, "Prove it," out of my own muzzle, a soft voice replied from behind me.

"Okay."

Her blue eyes widened as she looked towards me, shortly followed by a sharp pain shooting through my body. I cried out, looking down as a strange, blue, blade made its way out the front of me, my legs giving out quickly. I felt it pull back out of me, the warm blood, my warm blood, gushing out. I could see the fox I had just met standing over me, shooting at something. After a moment she stopped, looking down at me with a mixture of sadness and something else I couldn't identify. As my vision swam, threatening to go out entirely, she sighed, pointing the handgun down at me.

"My name's Ushio. And welcome to Afterlife," she said, pulling the trigger.

Alright! My first story posted on here! Be gentle with comments, please... I'm very fragile... icon_biggrin.gif I like the way this turned out, although I wish it were longer. It probably would be, except for the fact I hate leaving stories unfinished, and I'm quite tired now. But I'm definitely going to continue this particular story... expect more!
