#10 of Spyro: Return of Darkness

Well, here's chaper 11...just now finished chapter 21 and am still on a roll. Wish I could predict just how long this is gonna be...oh well.

I apologize for the length of these chapters...past 15 they get longer. I tried lengthening this one a bit but made it a bit too clumsy, so here it is without the extension.

If you're under 18, go find something better to do until you're old enough to "safely" get caught on this site.

Chapter 11 -- Eternity Begins Today

"Where are they?" Ignitus asked, looking out he window. Spyro and Cynder had gone off that afternoon to train, but hadn't come back yet. He was worried...what if something had happened to them?

His fears weren't unfounded--Spyro and Cynder were at that moment surrounded by a stray band of shadow creatures, deep in the woods. The two dragons had come out here to try some powerful elemental training and some teamwork moves, but instead had fallen into an ambush. The memory of their riverside activity two days ago was at the back of their heads as they calculated their odds.

"What do we do now?" Cynder asked, eyeing the shadowy disfigurations around them.

"Well, Solar's not here, so we're gonna hafta take them out ourselves."

"Obviously," she replied. She felt his tail wrap around hers, and she knew that signal. Before their enemies could react, the two dragons twisted tails tightly together and jumped hard to the side, going into a spin as they both unleashed their breath attacks. Their foes couldn't counterattack as they both jumped at the same time with the same intensity, spinning around in a wheel of fire and ice. The shadows fell back and retreated, and Spyro disengaged his tail from Cynder's. They were both dizzy, but they forced themselves to run in a straight direction as they ran back to the temple. Cynder screeched as more enemies appeared in their path. She felt Spyro coming up behind her, and she braced herself for another teamwork attack. He jumped onto her back, and she jumped up as he pushed off. His thunder attack cleared the defensive line as she rose up above him and blasted the enemies further ahead with a powerful fireball. He landed first and she landed on his back and jumped off, landing in front of him, and they ran again.

"I say we go out and search for them," Terrador said. "There's no reason they should be gone this long."

"I'll go search for them," Solar said, and ran to the balcony and leapt into the air, flying to the southeast in the direction they'd gone in. As he quickly scanned the forest below for any sign of movement he saw Spyro and Cynder rise up into the air, a multitude of shadows jumping up after them. He started to fly faster, but paused and watched as Spyro and Cynder breathed fire at each other. Spyro quickly switched to earth, and the earth energy bonded with that of Cynder's powerful firebreath, forming into a small, blinding sphere of energy. Spyro and Cynder then flew over it to each other, still breathing at the orb. The new direction of force sent the energy sphere to the host of enemies below, where it enveloped them all in a powerful blast that left none of them standing. The two young dragons nodded to each other and flew back to the Temple, seeing Solar watching them. He followed them back to the balcony and they fell to the floor, exhausted.

"I hope you two can explain yourselves," Ignitus said, a little cross.

"Well, in short, we were attacked," Spyro said.

Ignitus and the elders looked at each other, then back at Spyro, Cynder, and Solar. "I'm afraid you three must go find the next energy crystal. If you were attacked so close to the Temple, we've lain dormant for too long."

"When do we leave?" Cynder asked.

"Now would be preferable, but..."

Spyro looked at Cynder, but she turned to Ignitus. "I think we can get going now."

Ignitus looked at her oddly, but sighed in defeat. "I was going to tell you to rest before leaving, but I guess if you really want to leave..."

Cynder nodded, but then suddenly clutched her head.

"Cynder?" Spyro asked.

"Ow...my head really hurts..."

Spyro sighed. "I guess that means we're staying til tomorrow." She didn't really notice, but he seemed...a bit happy that they weren't leaving.

* * * *

That night Spyro and Cynder were back outside, again by the river. The full moon gave everything a silvery-bluish light that just took Cynder's breath away with its beauty. Her headache was long gone. She was too tired to do anything but cuddle with her purple dragon and listen to the voice of the running water. Spyro sighed contentedly, but Cynder sensed that something was on his mind.

"Spyro?"

"Hmmm?"

Whether it was the bond of love they shared or something else (but most likely the former), Cynder knew he had something on his mind he wanted to tell her. "I know you have something on your mind..."

He groaned and laughed to himself. "That settles it, I guess," he muttered, amazed at her ability to read him, and he slowly sat back. She sat up and looked at him, and was drawn into his deep amethyst eyes. He caressed her face, and she held his paw to her cheek, gazing back at him with half-closed, loving eyes. "Cynder...after today, you and I both know we make a really good team." She nodded, never breaking eye contact with him. "I...I was gonna ask you this two days ago...when we first mated..." He felt hardly any shame in saying that, and she didn't care at all that he was so open about it, but it wasn't that which was making him seem so nervous. She let his paw slip from her cheek as she felt his arm pull down. He looked deeper into her eyes. "I was gonna ask you but then, well..." He sighed hesitantly.

"Spyro?" she asked. Something about this impending revelation was making her happy and excited, and she wanted to hear what he had to say. He sighed with a strange determination and put his paws on her shoulders.

"Cynder...would you be my mate?" he asked, staring deep into her emerald wells with complete sincerity. Her eyes exploded with surprised joy and her moonlit smile was powerful enough to shatter diamonds. That was all he needed to know, and he leaned towards her. She took the hint and leaned forwards into his kiss, and they lost themselves to pure, unbridled joy and happiness at this new arrangement. Cynder moaned and pressed harder against his mouth, and he responded by wrapping his tongue around hers. He felt her smile against his mouth and she pulled away, a small tear forming at the corner of her eye.

"Spyro...I would absolutely love to be your mate..."

"For all eternity?" he asked with a playful grin.

She giggled in agreement and pressed her nose against his. "For all eternity...and then some."

Spyro tilted his head a bit and caught Cynder in another loving kiss that sealed their new promise. She wrapped her arms around him, and he wrapped his around her, and they held each other close by the riverside. She felt him reach for her paw and slip something around her foreleg, and after a while she broke away to see a beautiful bracelet around her wrist, wrought of silver and gold threads and set with a single, clouded ruby. Normally, clear gemstones were considered to have greater value, but the perfectly symmetrical cloudiness of this one, even in the moonlight, made it stand out brilliantly against her pitch-black scales. She looked back at him, tears of joy running down her face.

"Ignitus knew about us...last night he gave this to me to give to you when I was sure of your acceptance."

She smiled wide again, so happy she didn't know what to do with herself. Spyro smiled back--it made him so glad to see her like this, so full of joy. She hugged him close, burying her face against his neck as she cried with sheer happiness.

"You don't know how much this means to me," she said softly, and he caressed her head and neck as he held her. "Oh Spyro...just when I thought life couldn't get any better..."

"Love makes anything possible," he said, and she snuggled against him, still weeping joyfully. He lovingly petted her until she settled down enough that he could release her. He pulled her into another kiss, and she sat there in his arms, enjoying every moment of it. He broke away eventually and gazed into her eyes, wiping a tear from her face.

"Can you fly, my black night?" he asked. She shook her head--she was feeling a bit lightheaded from everything.

"Not really, my purple sunrise...I'm just so happy right now..." she sniffed. She was about to ask him if they could stay outside for the night, but to her surprise he lifted her up with hardly any effort and placed her along his back again, her head between his horns and her belly between his wings. She wrapped her tail around his.

"Hang on," he said, and she wrapped her limbs around him and held thigh to his golden underbelly. He shoved off the ground, and she felt a thrill through her as she felt the immense strength of her purple dragon pull them both into the air with seemingly little effort. He glided along towards the temple, and she lay there on him, loving the rippling feeling of his wing and shoulder muscles as he flapped and held out his wings to glide slowly. She let her hold on him loosen and looked at the bracelet on her foreleg. He felt a small tear of joy fall from her eye onto his back in the slipstream as he flew, and he smiled, taking immense pride that he had made her so happy and that she had so willingly accepted him.

When they arrived back at the temple, Spyro gently took her off his back, and she leaned against him as they walked towards their room. Solar greeted them with a huge, warm smile, and with a wave of his paw he showed them into their room as he stepped aside. Cynder's jaw dropped when she saw that their beds were no longer there; instead, there was one big, ornate, expandable stone-frame bed that would accommodate them as they grew older. There was a fluffy mattress stuffed with dried, soft moss and heather awaiting them. She turned to Spyro, and he smiled lovingly at her, nodding towards the bed. She ran to it and jumped up, feeling its softness under her paws. Solar grinned and walked out of the room to his usual spot on the balcony, thinking back to Flare and how happy she would be with him if she were there. Spyro jumped up onto the bed beside Cynder and she turned to him, more tears of joy coming from her emerald eyes.

"This...it all seems like a dream..." she said, and he hugged her close. She lay there in his embrace. "I don't want it to go away..."

"Then this must be the beginning of a pretty long dream," he replied, and she wrapped her arms around him and squeezed him back.

"An eternal dream, I hope," she said, and she broke away and flopped onto the bed with a content sigh. She felt Spyro lie down behind her, and she turned her head to him and smiled as he reached over her and pulled her closer to him until his gold-scaled underbelly was right up against her back. She turned her head back around and yawned, and she giggled when he kissed the back of her neck.

"See you in the morning, my love," he said softly.

"I await my purple dawn," she replied, yawning, sleep finally taking her mind and casting her into a blissful rest as Spyro stretched his wing over her.
